Japan has bigger problems that go well beyond the video game industry, but those problems may continue to impact certain aspects of gaming.

Due to the recent earthquake and tsunami in Japan, which has left a nation struggling to contain a nuclear crisis, the Next Generation Portable (NGP) may be delayed in that region. Sony has been forced to shut down several plants in Northern Japan for the sake of repairs and in speaking to Bloomberg , SCEA boss Jack Tretton said this could lead to the NGP being pushed back: "It may be the straw that says, 'Maybe we get to just one market by the end of the year,'" he said. On the up side, Tretton said that if a delay did occur, it would give publishers more time to produce valuable launch software. Sure, we'll all sorts of excited for the unit that boasts a 5-inch OLED touchscreen, a mult-core ARM CPU, a PowerVP multi-core GPU, a touch pad, twin thumbsticks, and available WiFi in certain models. Don't get us wrong.

But we're more than willing to wait until Japan gets back on its feet.

I say do whatever you need to do Sony, there's a massive human tragedy there so I can certainly wait.
Plus it will give us more time for more games, & more time for us to save up for them.

Godspeed, Japan!!!!!

I expressed my sorrow for Japan in the last related article, but honestly this was the ONE thing i did not want delayed…shit. i was really looking forward to it. I don't know how it expects to compete with anyone after a year has gone by.

Well, the 3DS is kind of a piece of crap according to the news so there shouldn't be much competition at any time.

it seems the 3ds is vulnerable with sales coming in well below expectations, so i hope sony can capitalize on this.

Please don't view me as a monster here guys, I'm just syaing I really want a refresh of my PSP, this device is pretty much all i ever wanted. I will finally get my i-Pad 2 this week perhaps tomorrow, shipping was delayed two weeks after this whole business went down, so I can at least amuse myself with that and Garage Band for a while, I can wait, I'd just prefer not to. I hope none of you took my first post too seriously and too cynical.

I really wouldn't be bothered if they chose to delay all releases of the NGP out of this year, given the tragedy. I mean, by contrast, does it really even matter? Don't get me wrong, I care about my games, but these people have experienced something truly awful. They need to come first and foremost before anything else.

On the positive side, at least it means a stronger launch line-up.
Peace.

The Ps3 released the same week as the wii, both a year after the xbox 360.
Last time i checked the wii & PS3 have overtaken the 360 in global sales,so your statement makes no sense.
Surprised?? not really

The NGP is being developed in Japan. Surely, you must be aware of the tragic stuff they've been going through for the past few weeks. If you're expecting them to continue working on the NGP then that's awfully insensitive of you.

Anyway, I could wait for the NGP. It'll get here when it gets here. I still have lots of games to play on the current consoles I have.

of course not!
the ps3 may of caught up, but look what sony had to do to get there!
they have been selling the system at a massive loss for 5 years!
they have had to go through countless revisions, countless manufacturing processes, and price cuts just to get back where you are.
did not say you cant do it, but its like starting a race after everyone else.
can catch up, but would it not be easier to take off when everyone else does?
the NGP is already going to be 8+ months later then the 3DS so they need to kick this out as soon as they can!

Not surprised and not a big deal. The NGP will have no direct competition so delaying it only means that we'll have more games, more time to save money for the ngp and its games, and they'll have more time to focus on making a great product.

It's a win/win/win from where I'm sitting.

To _____

U are a insentitive P_ _ ck like sony or any one in the world would know that this type of tradegy would happen, to say Sony learned nothing from PS3 and the later of competition you are an idiot who cares at this point when they release it at this point it has nothing to do with competition but all about a country that needs support and prayers and hope . Have no clue where you are in the world and I hope you are not in my country cause I would kick you out in a heart beat, people like you who only think of themselves I can't stand and have no tolerance for. If this was your country that it happened to I know you would probably being singing a different tune. Honestly I have no clue why you are even part of this website, all you do is bash and bash, you dont' deserve to be part of this community go somewhere else u're negativity is old and I and probably others are growing tiredsome of your childish ways.

to all the people and the families of the lost my prayers go out to all of you in Japan.

Personally, I'm ready to buy this whenever Sony can bring it. If there has to be a delay, so be it. They have more important things to worry about in Japan like the hundreds of thousands of people still displaced and/or homeless thanks to the Tsunmami and the 10's of thousands of dead or missing – each one of whom represents an individual tragedy of the worst kind.

I can send aid money to Japan, I can support their business, but the one thing I want to do, and cannot is offer the people any real comfort in their time of need. If I were able to, I would have flown to Japan weeks ago to help in the recovery effort. It breaks my heart to see the incredible dignity and fortitude of the Japanese people contrasted against the selfish, fear ridden western media response to the events in Japan.

I am referring specifically to the reporting of the nuclear power accident caused by the worst earthquake and tsunami to ever hit Japan in recorded history. Even in the geological record the only event that might come close to the earthquake/tsunami one-two punch, was some 1200 years ago. The reporting of Fukushima Daiichi has overshadowed any reporting of the actual disaster, and the recovery efforts. To hear our media report it, we've all been doomed for nearly 4 weeks now. But, even with the latest events in Japan, the impact beyond the shores of Japan is minimal at worst, negligible in fact, and non-existent at best.

I wish everyone could adopt a calmer attitude towards this, and lay aside the irrational fears driven by media hype and panic. The nuclear accident is significant, yet despite it's significance, not one person has died, or suffered lasting injury because of it. Yet it continues to be reported as the only major story. All the while, the death toll from the earthquake and Tsunami mounts, and the people of the region struggle to recover. It seems to me, that *that* would be the major story…

Japan needs our help. Modern Japan is a good friend to us, they have been one of the engines of growth in the world economy, to some extent we all owe them a significant portion of our well being. The people of Japan are good people, and we need to help them.

If Sony needs extra time, anyone who can't understand why, needs to open their eyes. Personally, I will support Japan, it's people and industry in whatever ways I can.

My personal buying patterns will change and whether it's slightly more expensive or not, I will select the Japanese made product over the Chinese or Korean made one. I can give to aid charities now, but in a year, those charities will be looking elsewhere, and Japan will still need help. Their economy will need exports, their business will need customers. By changing my buying habits, I can help, even if it's only in a limited way, it helps.

I could care less about the delay of the NGP. It's not fun to ship it when theres earthquake victims in needs. I hope besides the dynamic theme for AID JAPAN that is on the PSstore right now cony could donate 5% of a months worth for relief. I already did my part in this. $50 for the red cross.

Plus with a delay I hope they use that delay time to get some more ideas in the wagon.

Also Mr. Highlander you know what reballing is right?

Also, why buy chinese clocks while you could have a sony alarm clock?

Yeah, I know what reballing is, but I wouldn't attempt it myself. I suppose that I might trust a third party who's actually qualified to do it, but considering the delicacy of the equipment and the potential risks, I'm not sure I'd really want to do it unless there was no choice – but I am very cautious.

Regarding alarm clocks. My wife has a Sony CD/clock/radio that's lasted nearly 10 years now, I've had three different ones in that time – all chinese made.

Figuratively I "can't" wait for NGP to launch. But really, it's just a toy and I can think of some 127 million reasons why I can wait for it.

We need to show some compassion and understanding and more over we need to show our support. Whether it's raising funds, or just raising awareness.
