It's the single biggest detail that is yet to be discovered: price.

Journalists, analysts and gamers are all waiting for Sony to price the Next Generation Portable, and estimates have been flying all over the Internet ever since that nifty handheld was announced. However, we did hear that GameStop had the unit in their database with a $299 price tag, and that rumor has now – evidently – been confirmed. You can see the leaked screenshot in question ; it's a GameStop computer screen with price listings for two Nintendo 3DS models and the NGP. As you can see, the latter is priced at $299, as we had initially heard. The reason why some claim this is realistic is because if the retailer doesn't have a price, they often use a placeholder cost of $999 that shows up in the system. Those who have worked at GameStop say the emergence of this $299 price tag is solid evidence and quite reliable. However, we're not ready to fly with that for one main reason:

It seems Sony doesn't even have a set price in their heads. According to boss Kaz Hirai, they actually can't assign a price to the NGP because the device is still in the prototype phase . If Sony doesn't know, we're fairly certain GameStop doesn't know. Therefore, until we actually hear some sort of update from Sony that the NGP has exited that phase, we can't really tell consumers to expect a $299 price. That would be most agreeable, though, would it not?

Indeed, it would be an agreeable price. Perhaps the base unit will come in at that price?

But yes, while it's still in the prototype phase, it's hard to set a price. I still think that the price will depend most on the cost of the CPU/GPU combination Sony is putting in the unit, and the OLED screen. Everything else is well established technology, and sold at commodity levels already.

The only problem about this is that if Sony doesn't know what the price is, what GameStop did was make it so EVERYONE saw what the price is a in their minds. Guess what that means for Sony?

If by any means, Sony doesn't match that price and it's actually a higher cost, more people will be pissed off because everyone was actually content with $299, it sorta forces Sony to have to go with the crowd for what GameStop listed the price as or else they could suffer a whiplash for people feeling it'd be a '$599 U.S. DOLLARS!' all over again….

So, it 'has' to be $299 no matter what now, if there's different models however and one has less but costs $250 and one for $300 and maybe a 3rd for $350, that'd be a good move varying on all of what a consumer wants. Not everyone will want 3G since 3G is going to add extra charges for it to be in use, not everyone will want a lage amount of internal storage, maybe there'll be a 12GB and 30GB model or etc…

Differently priced models would be a smart decision whether it causes minor confusion or not so that there is a better selection for those that don't want Sony's gestures of 'more features at the cost of, a higher cost'.

$299 would be sweet. I'm even ready to pay $400 max for the NGP/PSP2 just because of what it can do. I'm fine as long as it does not exceed that price, but I'm sure the majority would like it to be around $250 – $300 instead.

I won't jump in unless Sony make transferring movies easier for the average consumers.

I'm getting 2 if they price it $250 or less. My wife is interested in 1 as well.

I'm actually convinced that the NGP won't come in increments of $50. I think it'll be some weird numbers $279.

The prototype still needs to be finalized, but being in this business for so long, Sony should at least know a price range. That $299 is probably the conservative upper limit given to retailers. It's safe to assume that the NGP is $299 or cheaper.

Considering the unit is in prototype phase that means that Sony does have a price in there head, it just isn't final.

The reason they aren't releasing it to the public is because if they say the system is 299, and then change the price to 350, a lot of people would end up not buying it. If they just come out of the dark and say it will cost 350, many of the people who would of been bummed and not bought it will because they aren't disappointed.

If NGP hits at $299 or less around the holidays then this fella might just have a new Christmas toy 😉

Now, how do I tell the kids Santa only came for Daddy this year?

You might have to import it for Christmas. I remember reading that it will likely be a Christmas release for Japan, and a Q1 2012 release for (at least) N. America.

I hope Gamestop is right on this even though I won't be purchasing it from them. Never felt right in any Gamestop. I would never enter a Gamestop if I didn't get gift cards from them every few months.

There is a kind of pall of evil residue in Gamestop isn't there?

At $299 or under, it would be a sweet deal. I'm thinking no more than $350.

What ever it is it will probably be worth it, unlike the 6 or 8 hundred the Iphone debuted at. I won't be a day 1 adopter but if it's around in time for Xmas 2012 I might ask for one from the folks, they can afford it 🙂 In the mean time there are still lots of PSP games for me to dink around with. And, oh yeah, there's that PS3 winking at me from my shelf.

You're right. Them apple products are way more expensive than they should be in terms of features and specs.

I'm willing to go $299 maxed. Anymore than that, I'd rather get a second ps3 so I can play online with my brothers and friends/guests in the same house. I'd still get the NGP, but will wait till the price go down.

Think there will be PSN games that we can play online across platforms with those at home on their PS3s and vice versa? That could be neat.

I would certainly welcome that, although there aren't too many great multiplayer, PSN games I've noticed yet.

i was hoping for $250 price tag. i think putting it at $299 price tag would actually make it compete against the PS3 because of the equal price.

Ya I agree, if the price is equal it's no longer an additional thing to go with the ps3 and people will be thinking one or the other.

I think the main audience for this device is people who already own a PS3, and the average gamer won't buy two of the same console. So in my eye i think it will do just fine at 299 or even 350.

Please, every person who had access to the internet, and was interested in dc universe saw that the release date was Jan. 11, not Jan. 30, as gamestop post it as.

Don't get me wrong, it was still released on Jan.11. "NEWS FLASH", True Crime is officially cancelled. Bummer.
