It has the tech; it has the glittery appeal. But it should also have the games.
During the worldwide debut of the Next Generation Portable, Sony head Shuhei Yoshida played Uncharted: Drake's Fortune for the audience, and there was also a running montage of other titles slated to land on the sleek new hanheld.
They even showed Hot Shots to display the unit's Sixaxis capabilities, and we caught glimpses of Wipeout , Resistance and LittleBigPlanet as well. Hideo Kojima got everyone all excited by showing off Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots , but he reminded us that he wasn't announcing MGS4 for the NGP; it was just to showcase the device's power and potential. However, he did say he'd unveil something for Sony's new handheld at E3 this year.
What else might be coming? Oh, all sorts of stuff, ranging from Sega's Yakuza series to Activision's mammoth Call of Duty franchise. And here's the list of confirmed titles that are coming to the NGP:
And that's just for starters. It seems clear that Sony understands the need for great games at the time of this unit's launch, and we certainly appreciate it.
those are darn good games but just too much money.
If it is really 299-349 it is only 50$ or 100$ more than the 3ds and it does SO much more.
If you can't afford it there must not be many handheld devices you can afford dood.
They'll be having at least two sku's, too. One with WiFi, and one with 3G (and WiFi, too, I'm assuming). So expect a price range.
@Shams,
Sony said every unit will have 3G; so, there will only be one sku.
I also JUST read there will be two skus in the U.K. only … one sku in Japan and North America.
Considering this new unit has two cameras, I'm surprised Sony isn't working to make a new EyePet or Invisimals at launch to cater more to the younger crowd.
Speaking of two cameras, you know where the front camera is? Is it that small circle on the right, above the geometic buttons (X,O, square, triangle)?
Ok maybe I need some clarification in regards to the games. From what I've seen these are the originals meaning the original games just supported by NGP.
So are these just remakes of what we already have just for NGP? Or, are these brand new meaning new story, etc.?
Good question. Based on what I keep reading on various sites, I think it's a rerelease of the original titles that can seamlessly interact with the PS3, but here's hoping for original installments!
No,they are original games exclusive to the PSP2.Each game has an original story.Just like the PSP counter parts of the franchises.
I hope onyl $40 a pop because it fthey charge $60 per game, i am not getting this. CALL OF DUTY LBP AND RESISTANCE FOR SURE.
What if they're $60, but you can play them on your PS3 as well?
I'm not saying that they've said that's possible.
Also, the games come on a writable flash card, though it may only allow for "official" data (e.g., DLC, saves) to be written to it. If you can use the cards as storage space, that provides extra value.
Actually, Kojima mentioned that it was possible to play a game on your PS3, transfer the save and continue with the same game on your NGP, then simply transfer back.
Wow, that would just be fantastic!!! Like Minis, but with larger AAA titles, download 1 copy of a game from PSN and play it on both PS3 and NGP. If that is supported from day 1, this thing is a must-buy.
What? No Angry Birds?? Blasphemy!!
On a serious note, given the control system of the device, EVERY game on the market currently will be great to play on the NGP.
The real question is, can the consoles keep up?
Angry Birds is already available for PSP (and therefore NGP).
It's too expensive, but it's available.
I read somewhere (don't remember where) that the NGP is digital only. Yet I see a pic. showing the new game media, which looks almost like a DS cartridge. Wonder how much memory that thing can hold and if it'll provide seamless gameplay (little to no loading) like DS games.
It's both
Download and hard copies both. The games are stored on new proprietary drives based on flash technology, so theoretically, they could store a lot of information and deliver it much faster than disc-based platforms.
Unfortunately, Andrew House commented that digital distribution could become the new primary format for retail purchases. I hope not, given that digitally swapping games is a real hassle when you just want to pick up and go someplace….

Sony said that they can upgrade the memory on the flash card to support some more intense games, oh say…uncharted?
*sigh*
I wish everyone would stop misusing the word "digital".
Seems a bit nitpicky, but okay, how about, "Swapping out games in purely digital format can be a real hassle when you want to just pick up and go someplace."
Additionally, the Random House dictionary now recognizes that the word "digital" can refer to anything available in electronic format, rather than exclusively referencing the fingers or the display/manipulation of numbers. Just sayin'. 🙂
@Hipster,
I meant the use of "digital" in the place of "download(able)". Your statements were perfectly fine.
That said, I don't count Random House as an authority. ;D

These are some very big names, and not to mention at least one ironic one: Epic Games. But this is also just the tip of the ice berg. The website Siliconera (a wonderful website by the way) has a list of developers who have thrown their support behind the NGP. It's a big list. Sony has got the tech, the innovations, and the developer support. Now all they need is a reasonable price and the party can begin.
…and "ironic", for that matter.
Hope the Yakuza game it's Black Panther 2.
I'm still some-what skeptical of this, & I don't know why…
just feels too good to be true 😛
I can bet the next poll here at PSX is gonaa have something to do with the NGP 😉
Wow, really? I'm surprisingly impressed with this line-up. It looks like Sony as actually taking the launch of the NGP seriously, as opposed to previous hardware releases that shall remain nameless….
If this list gets much more lengthy, this may turn out to be a day one purchase for me!
There's a few good games in there. I'm more worried about the name, PSP2 is better than NGP. NGP sounds like some kind of STD.
Love the dual cameras. That opens up the possibility of an Augmented Reality Interface, better known to Heavy Rain fans as ARI.

Oh man, I hadn't even thought of that. A murder mystery you play using the camera to examine elements of your home town for clues? Interesting…
Or, better yet, Fatal Frame Portable. Someone call Tecmo!
The dual camera feature does open up some interesting possibilities doesn't it?
Anyway, "NGP" is actually starting to grow on me. I think it's at least slightly more catchy. It's certainly easier to say.

I'm gonna have to agree with you. NGP doesn't seem Playstation oriented for some reason. To me, it actually seem like an abbreviation for a smartphone… or something, like STD as you say.
And besides, why drop the Playstation name? It is a Playstation right?… just portable.
@WorldEndsWithMe
Holy crap, that was a good one! You had me cracking up at the STD part 🙂
But so true. They need something that is a little more pretty than NGP. Then again, it may just be worth the name.
NGP is just a code name. They're trying to come up with something catchier than "PSP2" and haven't finalized it.
The final name will include "PlayStation" and "Portable", probably in that order; they just haven't decided whether to go with something like "go" or stick with the number.
If "Move" is any indication of their ability to formulate names, I'd say give them all the time they need and then some and then a little more to be safe.
Still, "Move" is a lot better than "Wii" or "Xbox 360".

How about PXP? Playstation Xtreme Portable.
I like PXP a bit more, but I have to side with Fane and doubt that they will come up with something creative.
As an aside, I am now all kinds of hyped for Fatal Frame Portable. Imagine controlling the camera by actually moving the system around and letting the system's camera detect where you are looking based on the speed and motion of the image. Yeah, you might be spinning in circles in your living room, screaming like a little girl while you cling desperately to your PXP/NGP/whatever they call it, but I can't help but feel that game would be awesome on so many levels!
Just brainstorming, mind you. Yes, I know Tecmo isn't working on a new Fatal Frame for a portable platform. But that doesn't mean I can't dream….

With those dual camera's, I'm thinking "the upcoming "Beyond good & evil" will be a great fit for the NGP too.
All games i can play on the PS3…. I'm yet to be convinced.
Of what?
7 Words: What is Ready At Dawn working on?
Kinda wish Ghost of Sparta was for the NGP.
Prove me wrong, but I am pretty sure that the Uncharted gameplay shown is not in Drake's Fortune. Anyone else not recognise that part of the game?
Well, supposedly Sony Bend is making the new Uncharted game for the NGP, so perhaps it was footage from said game?
One of the guys from Kotaku who was at the press conference had a hands on demo of it and said it seemed like an entirely new game.
I can't wait for this. The woman is gonna be mad during the holidays because I'll be out buying this and games.
Buy them for her, then she'll just give them to you.
The only game she has ever liked is Heavy Rain. She wouldn't be to happy if I did that.
I said you'd wind up with some games, I never said you'd ever get any action again 😉
