Code name: NGP (Next Generation Portable). The goal: "to transform every aspect of people's life."

And so it has happened. Mere minutes ago, Sony's new portable unit was unveiled at the PlayStation Meeting in Tokyo. The sleek unit features dual analog sticks (yay!), Sixaxis controls, front and rear cameras, new game media, a larger screen, and even touchpads on both the front and back; it's quite the appealing machine.

The pictures shown at the event show the NGP from a variety of different angles, and other relevant data includes- flash memory, 3G support and WiFi, and according to what Sony boss Shuhei Yoshida said, the "graphics are PS3 quality." The screen will be 5 inches, larger than standard 3.5-inch smartphones, and it'll feature an OLED display that will look brilliant from all angles. It seems you'll be able to use either the touchpad or the micro analog sticks to control the character on the screen. "It's like the world in your hands," Yoshida stated confidently, and everyone seems awfully psyched. Rightfully so; this thing is pretty amazing.

A bunch of games are shown running on the unit, including Reality Fighters , LittleBigPlanet 2 , Wipeout , Resistance , and holy God, even Uncharted . That's gonna be pretty insane in the palm of your hand… During the presentation, Yoshida was moving Drake around with the touchpad; he also uses the gyrosensor to make Drake jump. At one point, Yoshida slid his fingers down on the touchpad on the back, and the main character slid down a vine. Simply by touching places, Drake will jump to desired locations, and you can even draw lines to new spots off in the distance. Oh, look an enemy standing on the edge of a cliff…flick the finger at him, and Drake shoves him off the edge.

From what we can tell, that's Uncharted: Drake's Fortune , only with the NGP controls. Evidently, as far as the design of the unit, it's called "Super Oval Design" and although it's a little tough to gauge the actual size right now, the device appears to be about the same size as the original PSP. Perhaps most interesting is the fact that the rear touchpad is 5 inches; the exact same size as the front screen, so where you put your fingers on the back matches up with what you see on the screen. You can even use two fingers! Lastly, the NGP will boast a user interface called LiveArea, where players can learn about new games, access the PSN, and yeah, it's touch-based.  There will even be a live feed so you can see exactly what your buddies are doing, if you're into that voyeuristic stuff.

The unit is due out for the holidays, and we'll be anxiously awaiting the price. …any guesses?

I didn't think the CPU and GPU were announced yet, or at least, it didn't appear on any of my sources.

Thanks for the info. 🙂

Dude I was reading the live blog yesterday on 2 sites: IGN and Engadget.

I couldn't believe what I was hearing. It was like Sony listed to every single fan request and gave us the ultimate device we've all been waiting for.

If this goes for $500 I'm STILL BUYING THIS. HOLY SHIT THIS IS BEAUTIFUL. This is truly a revolution in portable gaming!

Did you check out the game demo with Shuhei Yoshida? Uncharted! Couldn't believe i was seeing it run on a handheld, and with touch screen and touch pad controls integrated. And I'm talking about ps3 performance (never mind the ps2 capacity that have been in speculation articles floating around here and there). I can say I was truly blown away.

A few new things- downloadable PSP games will run on the NGP, and with Sixaxis and convergence, you'll get into portable gaming like never before. 🙂

This is so awesome, I cant wait! Its just such a shame that we'll only be able to enjoy this for a year, I mean with the whole end of the world in 2012 thing. lol

I'm hoping $300-$350 but with all these features and things I'm reading about, I just don't see it being that low. I'm gonna get one anyways 🙂

I doubt NGP be $300+. The ipods already have most of these technologies and they sell for $200 with profit. A bigger screen, some buttons, and 3G should not cost more than another $100 to manufacture.

On top of that, Ipods rely mainly on hardware sales. Sony can take a hit if the price gets outrageous and make the money back on software sales.

I assume it'll be $249 to $299.

Cesar_ser_4

@godsman just like they did with the ps3

packersfan66

@ Godsman. ipods would make money off their hardware sales too wouldn't they, i mean the app store is huge

YesterdysRising

Well, I would think under $300 would be a good target for them to compete with the 3DS. Well, I don't feel like the ipod is a fair comparison. Ya, it has a lot of stuff it can do, but I feel like the NGP has a ton more technology in it. With an OLED touch screen, a rear touch pad and a 4 core processor, I think it will cost quite a bit to produce. I agree that they will try to make up the cost with the software. I feel like a strategy they are using to make money is by porting PS3 games to it. They said how it only took a couple weeks to port a demo over so maybe this way of porting is much cheaper than making a separate handheld game? I also wonder how much 3G will be and if they will do contracts for it like phones. Maybe if you lock into 3G for a certain amount of time, the device will be cheaper?

$399 minimum probably more like $499 but I'll wait until 2012.

Apparently, the screen is 4x that of the PSP (i.e., 540p give or take). That sounds about right for 5" and will allow pixel-for-pixel on PS1 and PS2 games (and the 480p version of PS3 games).

Dual sticks…Sixaxis…480p (+) screen. I'd say this device fixes a lot of the PSP's shortcomings.

It still needs a cover to protect the screen.

960×544 res. It'll look very nice. Not the silly 1080p screen we read about some weeks ago, or 720p for that matter, but still very nice nonetheless 😉

And hey, some games like CoD could run at PS3 res on the PSP2. I think those render at like 550p.

I'll agree, it does 'look' fake.
It just looks way to futuristic to be real.

It's shiny, too.

(Sarcasm, except for the remark about it being shiny. I like shiny things)

This thing is significantly bigger than the original PSP, for better or worse. Of course a lot of this is due to the bigger screen.

godsman

I think in terms of bulkiness, this might be a match to the original game gear.

The specs of the NGP is really amazing. I'm sure I'll get one eventually. I am very pleased they decided to use an OLED screen as it would definitely help with the battery life. Not to mention the display would look stunning!

Honestly, the NGP just made the 3DS seem underwhelming.

Let's see what that Pachter has to say after he goes through the specs of NGP. It's definitely going to offer a very different gaming experience to the 3DS.

Wow! Just wow! I guess I know what I'm asking for, for Christmas. I never thought I'd own a handheld. I mean I had a gameboy and gamegear as a kid, but I mean never had the urge to buy the psp or the ds, dsi, or the 3ds. This thing though, this thing has my jaw dropped. I really am interested in seeing what this thing can do in the future, as we get closer to a release!

So can someone tell me if you can somehow hook up your psp to the PS3 or even tv, to get playback through the tv? Part of the reason I don't own a psp is the small screen. I have terrible eyes and even though I'm nearsighted smaller screens still make me squint lol, and my eyes begin to hurt after a few. If not would this PSP2, or NGP rather be able to maybe?

Clamedeus
Clamedeus

You might be able to hook it up to the TV, i know the PSP can do it i have the wire to do it with but sometimes it looks horrible.

The screen should be big enough to not have any problems with it, and the system it's self is more thick for better and longer gaming time.

"When we launched Peace Walker for PSP, this is what I said: In the near future there will be a world of cloud computing… I really believe that you can have a portable MGS and Peace Walker was an experiment for the cloud computing future. NGP allows this cloud computing."

"What I'd like to realize is playing on your PS3, and when you go out, you put the game on your NGP, and when you come back home, you can once again use your PS3 and large screen TV."

"This dream is going to come true in the near future. And right now, I'm working on this project of the dream. I'm sorry, I can't reveal this now. But we'd like to present what we're doing at E3"

This is exactly what I want in a portable system, to be able to start a game on the PS3, then continue the experience while away from home.
