The evidence has been piling up for the past few months and we've reached the point where a PlayStation Phone seems inevitable.

And this is the closest we've come to an official reveal: supposed inside sources have confirmed to Pocket-lint that the Sony Ericsson PlayStation Phone will be on store shelves in April, following a February Mobile World Congress launch in Barcelona. The source said- "Sony Ericsson is going big on this one, but although it will get a Feb launch, it won't be in shops until April." Based on previous hints, the phone will feature a slider design akin to the PSP Go, a dedicated gaming pad, and a screen measuring somewhere between 3.7 and 4.1 inches. Other rumors say it'll have a 1GHz Qualcomm MSM8655, 512MB of RAM, and 1GB of ROM. By the way, this comes hot on the heels of Sony announcing a PlayStation app for the iPhone and Android, so it appears they're looking to expand the PlayStation brand at a rapid rate.  Still need a press release, but…

So who's interested? Will it appeal to both gamers and gadget-lovers alike? Or do you see it as just another phone?

Might make a nice update from my Droid in due course.

I wonder whether this device will pair up with the PSP2 in some fashion?

I'm with you on that. Hopefully my carrier will offer the phone. If not, I'll be switching – so long as it's not Teen Mobile.

agreed, will be a nice update to my htc desire, since it runs gingerbread, and hopefully has a big battery ( as it is a gaming phone ) i think this might be quite good, even if you take out the whole psp part, the phone is very similar to the brand new nexus s, stock android gingerbread, 1ghz processor, 512 ram, if you then add the gaming pad, even on non psp games, the gamepad will be great for standard android games like assains creed, nova, modern combat etc, then for all the emulators on the market, and suddenly am quite liking this phone, and thats not even included whatever psp games come out ( am not expecting psp games, i figure most likely mini's will be downloadable and maybe psx games)

I figure it will be minis (perhaps), but mostly PSX games.

Highlander, I am definitely not going to purchase this. I have my eye on the HTC HD phone which is a beautiful Android beast. I will run the PlayStation App on that phone rather.

Much better to go for a dedicated mobile gaming platform when it comes about – the PSP2; but as you have seen with some of most recent iOS game releases (on the iPhone / iPad) – the titles are looking stunning… When you have companies like id Software behind your platform they are going to shake things up a little – and have done so.

I get the feeling Sony has been sleeping a little bit… waiting far too long to make the move… people on iPhone won't move now I wouldn't think.

Is it too little too late? Are PlayStation Gamers like Apple cultists who will buy anything with the Sony PlayStation brand name on it? I wouldn't think so…

Anyway, we'll see what happens. I think for people that need a new phone and were going to get Android anyway, then this will come just in time… but for people who already have good phones it may take some time for upgraders to filter through… but like with everything we have seen before… we can't assume. Let's see what the numbers are like after a few months… numbers tell you everything – undisputable hard facts…

Qubex,

A lot of what you say, I can agree with. On the other hand, since the PlayStation Phone will run Android, those excellent game developers you mentioned will support the PlayStation phone by dint of supporting Android. Since this phone comes with controls that more approximate to a game controller, I think that it will be a decent bet for gaming.

However, the big thing for me is that I am certain to get a PSP2 when it arrives, so my phone will not be my primary hand held gaming device. So I don't have to worry about whether it's the *best* gaming phone, I do consider though that because it's a Sony phone, there is a greater likelihood that it will include some kind of connectivity with the PSP2, and so it may be interesting to me fro that point of view. If not, and it's just another Android, then like everyone else, I will make my decision based on the specifications of the handsets available.

Qubex
Qubex

Once again you make very valid points Highlander… I didn't think of that connectivity possibility between the PSP Phone and the PSP2… that is interesting…

Let's expand that a little… with a PSN type application, where media can be shared across your Sony (and other devices that run Android), Sony are trying to do what Apple has done with iTunes… a complete accessible PSN sub system across all its hardware… be it TV, PS3, PSP, PSP2, PSP Phone and Sony Viao Laptops… they are creating an ecosystem that extends beyond what they initially thought they would need to do…

I guess the PSP Phone closes that circle up nicely… and your point about the PSP2 connectability is definitely a huge possibility. No doubt it will be interesting to see the specifications of the PSP Phone to see what it can really do. If it helps the casual gamer to pass the time and ends up being a useful phone device, why not.

PSN can only expand and mature with the additional accessibility options needed now that phone users would probably want content from it any time of the day and night…

I won't be able to get this and a PSP2. I've a bad record with Sony Ericsson phones, I think Sony are strong in many areas, the phones imo and from my experience with them, suck.
Having said that, since they're using the Playstation name, then maybe theres more focus on getting this right.
I'm still gonna hold off for the PSP2 though.

I hear you on that one. Its just that, with the psp2 coming out I will just hold off until that particular release.

Lord knows it's going to improve on the lack of good software that the first psp didnt get. Improve on the physicality of the pspgo, as it wasn't the most comfortable and efficient piece of portable gaming hardware.

And last but not least, improve on it's internal memory storage and processing power. Wish you the best on the psphone, if its on your checklist.

I will buy one if it comes out on Verizon. I have a business line that I can use to get a new contract. Also depends when Verizon gets the iphone. Not that I would rush to further sell my soul to Apple but I would have a bit to think about. I'm also quite happy with my droid inc.

Unless the big surprise from Sony is that they are releasing 2 versions of the PSP2, then I'd have to say yes.

It still is possible that they have a PSP Phone and PSP2 gaming only platform.

TheHighlander

This isn't the PSP2, it's from Sony's phone division. Besides, the hardware inside it and it's configuration doesn't match the reported/leaked details/descriptions.

Need4Speed11_11
Need4Speed11_11

Yes, exactly what highlander said.

The new Hirai public announcement with NY Times should help clear up this confusion with the general consumer.

Now all that is left, is for the hardware to be fully developed and produced for the world to see. Not in a rush, but just make sure ALL consumers can tell the difference. And not just avid sony followers.

One thing that folks need to understand about both the PlayStation Phone and the PSP2 is that the development kits can have been in the hands of in-house teams for years. Sony (and other console makers) don't wait for finished retail units before sending out dev kits. The initial development may be on partial hardware with software emulation of the CPU/GPU architecture. Later the dev kit will become a working version of the hardware in a development chassis. It looks more like a desktop computer than the final product. This allows in-house and closely allied developers to gain early access to the core hardware so that they can begin familiarizing themselves with the architecture before it even physically exists.

The hardware can be in a developing state right up to release, because the dev kit doesn't require completely production hardware until closer to release.

Need4Speed11_11
Need4Speed11_11

Great point. And for the technologically advanced, we would already have a pure following about the intricate and tedious development.

Of not only the infrastructure, but also how well the chassis will push its software forward in the most efficient and effective way. I agree with you 100 percent. But to the average consumer, they will be more pulled in to the product with wowing numbers and enticing pictures of the final product;or at least what it is expected to look like.

Lol, its why most people think that pic above will be the final product. But Hirai's statement should help people understand that their will indeed be some undeniable differentials between the two.

But for tech'ies like us lol, we already know what to wait for and acknowledged that the dev kits will probably determine what the final overall look of the device may be.

And the physical look won't really be molded with the development kit until the final steps of production with the device as a whole. Great post.

First off, thanks for your warming welcome on the other post. It's heavily appreciated. It is nice to be a part of this psxe fam. You all are mature and very welcoming, thanks.

Now, on to the topic!

I have T-Mobile as well. A lot of people don't really prefer this service, lol, but i love their phones. And after all it is the first home of the android os :).

I have already made up my mind to hold off on this phone. I will wait and see what else 2011 will bring in the world of cellular technology. I also heard verizon's getting the iphone 5? what a bummer lol. well, since the iphone is gsm, im wondering will they ship it both gsm and cdma?

Not sure, but i wish you the best on this psphone if you are after it.

If I remember right the pic is an actual product that was using the new 1080p screen, and it was the same screen that the psp2 was to use. I might be wrong though as I saw this when checking Sony's stock price a few months back.

Hello again psxe fam! How are you all? Yes, the sony phone. To buy or not to buy. To anticipate, or anticipate something much more powerful and dedicated to gaming. To buy this, or wait it out to buy the psp2. These two products do have their highs, but to get them both may be overkill. While the psp phones hardware would make emulation sooo much easier, it will also pack enough power to run them smoothly. One of the biggest factors to how efficient this piece of hardware will run is indeed the battery. With all of this processing and graphical capabilities, one would need sufficient power to help it run smoothly and not strain the hardware. On top of using it as a phone and doing your normal social networking/multitasking, this will need some great power backing. The way I see it, wait it out, get you a really nice android phone. Then cop the psp2 powerhouse when it releases 😉 . But in the world of the multitasker and social fanatic, one could only hope to get one powerful device that packed in their social&gaming lives into one smoothly finished design and concept. Let's wait it out and see what next year brings for fresh technology!

Need4Speed11_11
Need4Speed11_11

Really? I hope in the meantime, sony can develop a way for this mighty piece of hardware to run at a great temperature and smooth as well.

I just think this phone will be a nice way for people to become more involved with the ps store, and sony gaming itself. the casual gamer would love to take his/her games on the go. Especially, while having their phone/social life attached as well. And with sony offering both with this phone, there is nothing better than having options.

A lot of people who will prefer the psp2, may not prefer this phone. And vice versa. So good look for sony, for giving it's consumers options.

Let this phone, integrate ps3,psp and psphone users into one great community. This phone will uplift the face of mobile gaming, hopefully more than the silly xbox live phone windows trying to push. And let the psp2 revamp the face of portable gaming.

I'm in the market for a smart phone. I haven't upgraded to a smart phone and at least with the PSP Phone out, I can weigh my options and make a well researched decision. Do I want the PSP Phone to be all that it can be and more? You bet I do.

I just hope it doesn't become some half-assed product with weak implementation.
