Rumor: Uncharted Installment For PSP2 In The Works

The world has gone Uncharted crazy: first came the announcement for Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception , then came added details and finally, that drool-worthy VGA trailer .

But what if the stellar franchise ever went portable…? And what if such a project had the benefit of superior handheld hardware? Well, the latest rumor is that developer Sony Bend is preparing an Uncharted iteration for the PSP2. In fact, it seems that such a game might actually be a launch title for the hotly anticipated unit (which we're all sort of assuming exists). Now, although we have no further information and we only get the "reliable source" comment – which is often decidedly un reliable – it's not out of the realm of possibility. Sony knows the "Uncharted" name has become massively huge and they could really benefit by expanding the franchise's audience. Plus, Sony Bend has already brought Insomniac's Resistance series to the PSP; you may recall Resistance: Retribution .  So based on the evidence, it just might happen.

But can you imagine having an Uncharted title available for the PSP2 when it arrives? That might make a purchase a much more agreeable proposition, almost regardless of price. …almost.

Great news as well! More incentive for the PSP2, I am holding off on a handheld until it comes out. The VGA's were pathetic but the Drakes Deception footage looked absolutely amazing, so stoked for 2011!

Would be worth a play for sure but will it make me buy a PSP2? Probably not.

The PSP2 sounds powerful and expensive. I promise you now Sony that I won't buy your PSP2 if it's as expensive as a PS3.

New tech is always expensive.

Where Sony and Apple are concerned, yeah.

Jawknee

And Samsung, Toshiba, Sharp, Panasonic and so on and so fourth. Point is when a company dumps millions into R&D and whatever else, the new technology is going to cost a lot when its first released. How can it not when they have essentially spent years and millions creating something that they haven't been able to turn a profit on until it hits the market?

Dude, there are times when you are so grumpy, I want to change your name to GrumpyOldMan.

New technology always costs, but hell, Sony could have rightfully charged $900 for the PS3, and instead took a $300 loss, so let's not castigate Sony for charging too much when they sell the initial generation of the hardware at a loss, OK?

As for whether new tech is overpriced, new tech always uses new components, and processes which are initially expensive. Gadgets are always expensive at first, and then much cheaper later. Why else do you think 32GB Memory cards are so costly compared to 8GB ones?

But seriously, Cellphones would cost $300-$400 easily if it weren't for that nice two year contract people sign that spreads the cost over the length of the contract.

Really, people need to start to understand how much it costs to being together a new system, and then to miniaturize it into a handheld unit. The costs are substantial.

Alienange

You think ridiculously high prices are "rightful?" I don't.

For one, the iPhone DOES cost $300 on a two year contract so I'm not sure where we disagree with that.

Secondly, the PSPGo was $250 at launch with barely a game for it. That, to any gamer, is a colossal waste of money and its sales numbers prove that.

There is a difference between expensive new technologies and overpriced gadgets.

TheHighlander

I didn't say that, I said that Sony could have rightfully charged the actual cost of the PS3 instead of selling it at a $300 discount.

In case you hadn't noticed, selling products at or below cost is considered to be a 'good deal' for consumers. When someone, Sony for example, sells a product 30% below the cost of manufacture, that is not selling the product at a ridiculously high price.

You're charging Sony with a ridiculously high price with the PS3 at launch? OK, it was a high price, especially compared to the PS2. On the other have it wasn't that out of line with BluRay players of the time, nor was it that out of line when you considered the computing power included in the box. If you compared that original PS3 feature for feature with other similar items, it was far more capable. Let's see to get a BluRay Player plus an HD capabler gaming console and PS2/PS1 game compatibility without buying a PS3 at the time you'd ave had to spent $300-$400 on a Bluray player, $400 on an Xbox 360 Pro unit, and $129 on a PS2. Plus the wireless adapter for the 360 and the wireless controllers for the 360 plus the XBL Gold account. All of that to equate to what was in the PS3. So over $1000 spent on the collection of items, or $600 for the 60GB PS3 (actual cost of manufacture $900+). What was that about ridiculous pricing again?

Sorry Alienage, but this discussion was had at the time, and it hasn't changed any since. If you want your electronics to cost less, you need to be content with less capable devices with fewer features. In which case you might like to buy a Wii and a DSi.

The point is that high performance, high functionality hardware costs. If that's a problem, then buy behind the curve and wait a couple of years.

I agree. The PS3 was simply expensive new technology. But that's not what I was talking about in my previous comments.

I said if the PSP2 is as expensive as a PS3, I won't be getting one. That's my business no?

Then I referenced Sony along with Apple as two of the biggest culprits in overpriced handheld gadgets. At least that's where I was going with that. Somehow that put you on the offense as if you were hired by Sony itself to prove otherwise.

Also, the statement "If you want your electronics to cost less, you need to be content with less capable devices with fewer features" is highly inaccurate.

No, not hired by Sony. Just offended by the attitude that you displayed and the sentiment that I felt was coming from you that you basically wanted more for less and damn Sony if they didn't comply.

Sony is cashing in on Uncharted. Nothing wrong with that, as long as they keep the quality of the games tightly controlled. It's become one of their biggest franchises and it achieved that with just two games. And yes, I might get a PSP2 as long as the games are there and the pricing is right.

What happened to the connectivity between the ps3 and the psp? I remember reading that the psp would act as a sort of pda accent to certain games, displaying maps and what not.

Main_Event,

This info was taken from an article I read about 2 weeks ago. Not sure if it's true but sure hope it is…….

Interestingly, the source also pointed towards a high level of connectivity with the PS3 as well.

To the point where gaming experiences could be completely continuous with players potentially starting games on their PS3, and then continuing them on-the-go with the PSP2.

that's sorta asking a bit much. But you know simple things like maps should be a non-issue. imagine playing through MGS or RE w/o having to bring up another screen to check the map. but i guess looking at the psp isn't much of an improvement. Hey, at least i'm trying.

Well, I was already thinking in terms of finding a way to get a PSP2 early in it's life, but this would make it a certainty.

The PS3 and PSP have taught me that Sony likes to go all out when they release a new piece of hardware. I like my PS3 Slim because its quiet but the 60gb is a tech dweebs wet dream. I also like my PSP-3000 but the PSP-1000 just feels like a stronger, more sturdy piece of hardware. I'm sure we won't regret getting a PSP2 in it's first iteration.

TheHighlander

I have been fortunate enough to have two 60GB PS3s with all the bells and whistles. Both are babied along.

I also have a PSP-1000, PSP-2000 and PSP-3000. The PSP-1000 is my favorite because it feels (just as you say) more solid. My son has the 3000, and actually my wife bought me the 2000 (it has the Vader tattoo, so I use it, and my wife uses the 1000. The only problem I've had with them was a joystick replacement on the 1000.

My original PS2 is still working too. Sony always over-engineers the first generation of it's products. If you like a high technology, solid, reliable product, Sony is the way to go.

Ha! My original PS2 still works as well. Got it at launch. I can't believe it still runs. Over ten years later. Last I asked my original PS1 is still working too. I gave it too my dad before I moved away to California for college.

Well, They would be hard pressed to find a better series to launch the PSP2 with then Uncharted.

If they make it happen, and the PSP2 is at least in the $200-$250 range… they got themselves one sale right here.

Jawknee

I'm guessing it will be closer to $300. If Nintendo thinks $300 is a good price point for the 3DS, I can't see why Sony wouldn't do the same.

As much as I love Uncharted, this probably means that we won't be seeing a new Syphon Filter, since it's developed by Bend.

I'm glad that Uncharted will (seemingly) continue past UC3, but I'm disappointed about SF.

As much as I loved Resistance: Retribution (and I loved it a lot) I don't think that Sony Bend is the best studio to put on this project, if it is indeed happening. So far as I figure, they haven't had the experience to make a truly enjoyable and engaging platforming experience. Of course, they work with the original developers so I have faith, but I'd much rather see this go to Ready at Dawn, or perhaps be a collaborative effort between the two studios.

Nevertheless, if this is true, I will buy a PSP2 the second that Uncharted PSP becomes available, and never look back.
Peace.

Sony Bend also made the Syphon Filter games, so I would say they have plenty of experience. Not platforming, admittedly, but diverse action, including underwater stuff that actually didn't suck.

Regarding the PSP2 and the potential for 3G/4G data access. I wonder whether this will be platform agnostic, or if you will have to purchase a data plan from a specific carrier?

For example, if you already have Verizon, can you simply 'attach' to your Verizon 3G, or do you need to get a SIM (and therefore more cost) or whatever from Verizon to allow that? OTOH, what if Sony pre-negotiated roaming 3G coverage with the major networks to allow nationwide coverage – say in the US, and sold it as a PSP2 data plan that you could buy with the PSP2, possible reducing the upfront costs of the PSP2?

You know, if Sony could pre-negotiate 3G/4G data access with Sprint/AT&T/Verizon and include that as a standard two year contract with the PSP2 at a reduced price, that would take a lot of the sting out of whatever retail price the thing foes for…

Uncharted on PSP2 is a smart move, people will lap that sh!t up in the masses. I just hope ND don't get too carried away by shoving too many Uncharted games down everyones throat. We have Uncharted 3 in the desert and maybe an entirely new Uncharted for PSP2 (possibly regarding the Eye of Indra). That is all good, but steady the pace abit & leave it at that for a while. I don't want Uncharted games becoming constant spew ups like every COD that comes out year by year. The last thing an epic series like this needs is being milked to death.

ND has (ALOT) more class than that. but yeah I say don't over do it, make 4 the last or atleast start something else and come back to it, like insomniac.

It is but…how is it possible to create TWO masterpieces in only 4 years!?
I guess if each uncharted make the leap similar to UC1 & UC2, don't stop lol. However technology only goes so far, & excllent storytelling isnt going to carry all the weight if you catch my drift 🙂

TheHighlander

Not sure I do Liam,

Story telling and characters is/are what it's all about. Let's say that somehow a game was able to actually reach photo-realistic standards, to the point where it was no longer possible to differentiate live action from computer animation/video game. All that's left is story and characterization. Story and characterization in a game like Uncharted 3 does the heavy lifting.

Smart move packing Uncharted in to the PSP2 launch. I'm impressed. However, I am not impressed in the leaked footage of the PSP phone. I didn't want a superpowered phone able to play PSP games. I wanted a superpowered PSP thats able to make a phone call. The PSP phone seemed to just be a phone with a PS icon on it. Oh well I guess I'll end up having to carry two electronic gadgets on my person instead of one.

Well, PlayStation Phone aside, if the PSP2 has 3G/4G it has the basic transceiver assembly needed for use as a phone. If they then put out a phone on a chip add on at a later date, I could be interested in that, assuming that the device has Bluetooth of course (safe assumption IMHO). But I don't want the PSP2 design to be predicated on being a phone, make it a game unit first and foremost.

Still pricey for a handheld. If the PS3 originally cost $900 £600 to start off with how many people would have bought it from the start ? I for sure wouldn't have. Id have waited for it it come down in price, more than likely will do for the PSP2 too.
