As most analysts and journalists will tell you, the PSP2 is basically an inevitability. And based on recent rumors, it might be quite the impressive little device.
But just how impressive…? Well, first of all, EA boss John Riccitiello openly referred to the PSP2 and said that Sony shouldn't have to worry about Apple in regards to the portable gaming kingdom. Then he made a statement that has already spread across the Internet at lightning speed: "Having something as powerful as a PlayStation 3 in your pocket is a pretty compelling idea." He then talked a bit about how Blu-Ray is far more appealing these days, and then elaborated on that previous comment:
"Sometimes the competitive advantage requires games to show it off to prove its compelling. So reading in a press release that it’s as powerful as a high-end console in your pocket is sort of a little flat. Look at it [PSP2] the first time; when you actually see it happening it can be awfully compelling."
Okay, so wait, that implies two things. First, it says Sony sent a release to game makers informing them about the PSP2, and actually compared the new handheld's power to the PS3 or at least a "high-end console." Secondly, it sort of implies that Riccitiello has already seen games on the unit, or perhaps believes that when we do, it'll be mind-blowing. All this PSP2 news is really starting to heat up and this latest tidbit has really amped up our excitement level.
Hey Sony, how's about an official press release for those who write the news…?
PSP2 sure sounds like it'll be my 1st PSP!
So can they make little blu rays the size of the UMDs and a reader to play them? Since the PSP can nearly reach the juice of the PS2 and the cell keeps shrinking this isn't all that surprising that it might approach the power of the PS3.
So when will MS be entering the portable market with a piece of cheap plastic?
let me add a little something to suit the season…
a cheap piece of plastic that'll light up like a christmas tree when it overheats
lol XD
if M$ does, we all know what will be the story.
Plastic? Don't you think you're giving Microsh*t a bit too much credit. It'll probably be molded out of petrified crap (petrified because everyone will be in awe and wonder of why they made and bothered to release such a piece of sh*t)

awwww how cute, its a lil ol' red circle…
LRROD for the new tech
MS already launched the Windows 7 phones linked to your gamerscore and XBL access for mini-games :D.
Well basically they gave high specs restriction to companies so they make phones for them because we all know what happens when MS does hardware lol.
Still Win7 phones are pretty sweet and even though I don't think there will be any GRAND games on them… its a fun way to up your gamerscore 😀 So I don't think they will go in a handheld battle. I think they took the apple approach.

One thing everyone has to realize about xbox 360s… It is not a one time purchase system… I know people who have bought 8 of the damn things and keep buying em… Either they get banned from modding or just light up like a christmas tree, whatever the reason the microsoft idiots just keep getting new ones…This has inflated the sales more than you would think… Look at the COD MW2 ban wave, after that there were so many banned consoles flooding ebay and craigslist and so many people buying new consoles.
One thing I love about sony, even if someone attempts to downgrade the new firmware, It will allow them to go into factory service mode, but it will not allow them to downgrade. so basically you can go into service mode and then back to normal, instead of being stuck or bricked. It just says something about sony when they try to settle their systems security viw FW updates and legal battles, instead of just making the console useless by banning it so that even the hdd wont be recognized.
@Neo-Aeon666
I would love the PSP2 to contribute to trophies. That would be amazing.
I wonder what will kill me first?
The anticipation or when I die after seeing the most EPIC item finally held in my hands…I think it will go as the great deity said "BOOM!"
This is why I think Pachter's recent comment that swept so many media sites is going to be wrong. You know, the one about PSP2 being DOA?
Sony's angle in the market has been premium gaming. No matter how you cut it, the Apple games are not going to compete with the kind of content the PSP/PSP2 games will deliver. It's not so much about processing as it is production. Games like GoW: GoS and MGS: PW aren't found on other handhelds. There's a market for this kind of gamer that Sony will continue to pinpoint. The software sales will be strong for PSP2 with these types of games because there'll no longer be a generational gap in quality. It will now be about as compelling to pick up a PSP2 premium game as it will be a PS3 game. Imagine if Sony adds even trophies and PS2/PSN content. It'll be profitable and successful for Sony.
Pachter said the same thing about the Wii's arrival and many other recent successes.
His analysis is DOA.

Pachter is one of those that would have you believe that the PSP has been an epic fail. Considering it was Sony's first hand held gaming unit and entered a market saturated and completely ruled by Nintendo, the PSP has done incredibly well to take (IIRC) about a 1/3 share of the handheld video game console market.
Pacther's also the one that thinks the Kinect is the greatest thing since sliced bread.
(Yup, I hope it's with lots of moldy penicillin for whatever ails him)
Yep. Pachter will tell anyone who will listen the PSP2 will be DOA just like the PSP was DOA.
Sometimes I wonder if that douche is on M$ftâs payroll… you know, getting a nice big kickback.
Slightly off topic, does anyone find it slightly odd that the NPD decided to not post sale numbers anymore just as the PS3's momentum continues to climb and the Wii's and 360's momentum stagnates, as well as just before the Kinect releases.
Now, all we have to go on is what the companies tell us; and I'm sure it is not beneath M$ft to lie to us about the number of consoles and Kinects it sells.
It's suspicious indeed. However, they are actually continuing to collect the data, they are simply no longer publishing it as they were before. I believe that industry Analysts who pay NPD can still gain access to the raw data.
Either way, it's an opportune moment from a couple of angles. You could take the view that this masks the declining interest in Wii and 360 in the US. You could also argue that it removes a distraction from the Global picture. Now there will no longer be the NPD sales numbers of consoles sold in the US, being reported by many as if they represent the Global picture.
thank god, that sounds so much better than a phone
If it can do all that.. And also be a phone..no one loses.
except for those who are locked into a contract, or have a phone they like already, or are too young for a phone, or can't afford the expensive contract that more than likely comes with the phone, or if your provider doesn't carry it, or many reasons

cool, looking forward to it.
Wow.. Although it isn't that inconceivable to have something so powerful in a small package, this would be one hell off a tiny machine!
it's going to cost alot that's for sure.
I must admit, I am really… really excited about PSP2. I got in on the PSP when the 2000 (slim) came out and I haven't regretted it for an instant. Not only have I played some of the best portable games ever made, but this little beast is an ultra reliable device. I love my PSP, and I can't wait for PSP2.
I HOPE SONY ANNOUNCES IT ON VGA'S
If it can play doom it is worth purchasing.
I think that it ought to be mandatory to include an open implementation of the Doom game engine in the firmware of every smartphone/media player/handheld gaming device. Actually, it ought to be mandatory in everything with a screen.
PSP2 would be great, but do we need one so soon? Why not release at the same time as the PS4 and here's my reasoning.
If it's as powerful as the PS3, then we wouldn't need backwards compatibility on the PS4, and that means SONY would concentrate on whatever new feature that would make the PS4 the console of its time.
PS3 games could be downloaded for free on the PSN. SONY would cash in on the portable device because the games would have been classics, not to mention the library would have been huge.
PSP2 will be cheaper than PS3 IMHO, and if you never owned a PS3, you wouldn't miss out greatly.
In the meantime, let me get the most outta my lite, 2000 and go! Delay the release.
unfortunately there will never be an option to download the games you bought in disk form for free, just like there are tons of ps1 games on the store yet you can't redem the old disk for a download.
and the psp2 kind of has to launch soon in order to be competitive with the 3ds
IGN has a similar article up, only they're using an unnamed source. They go into some detail about the unit itself, and mention that it is apparently half as powerful as the PS3, and capable of games that look equal to first gen PS3 games. From everything that is floating out there about the PSP, it could wind up taking a huge chunk out the 3DS dominance, especially if the 3DS is targetting the hardcore market, which has always been Sony's goal.
The PSP2 sounds as though it is going to be an insane little device, and I would love to see Sony lift the lid on it just before the 3DS launches to try to steal some of that thunder. But, regardless of the power and potential of the system, it needs to hit with the games. Seriously.
Speaking of the games, IGN also said that it will not have a UMD, but will run downloadable games, and expandable memory-based games, which I'm not sure I understand, but am hoping to mean M2 sticks, or something of that ilk. The PSP2, if it really does have these specs, is going to be ridiculous… And a have a price to match, of course.
Peace.
I utterly *loved* (well, still do) my PSP, and it has been a sad sight to see how the releases has shrunk to almost nill the recent years.
I still remember the thrill of experiencing GTA running in that little handheld, it is one of the timeless Magical Gaming Moments for me. To re-visit Vice City, exploring what it was like a few years earlier, oh man what an absolute dream come true.
If they can create such magical moments again, then I will be first in line getting that new psp.

Hope this to be true, It just sounds to good. Hopefully it will be ps2 compatible.
That's when PS2 games will hit PSN.
I don't know about that. It will only be capable of doing that if Sony makes a custom GPU for it. None of the mobile GPUs can move data with the same bandwidth as the GPU in the PS2. Hell, even the PS3 can't. You might see ports of PS2 games – much like the HD ports we are seeing coming to the PS3, but unless Sony does some custom design work, a portable device is going to be no more capable of running a PS2 game than a current PS3 slim is.
We are going to be getting the Neo-Geo games on the PSN for the PSP & the PS3 too.
And the PSP games will be cheaper than it's counterpart on the PS3.
this will def be my first psp. and "WorldEndsWithMe" i hope ur prediction is right about ps2 games hittin psn, that will be so awesome!
A PS3P? Playstation3 Portable? Imagine if it could play full PS3 games. PS1 and PS2 games too. It would have the biggest library at launch than any device. It could be the Playstation experience on the go. Who wouldn't be interested. Full PSN and Trophies. NETFLIX. Music Unlimited. HOME? Ect……
I just hope all this is not preemptive corporate sabotage and these people are generating a buzz for a device that will not be as powerful as we hope for. Come on Sony. Don't make.beleive. Make it happen!

Somehow I doubt that there will be a handheld that is quite that powerful. There are no processors or GPUs in the mobile arena that have that level of computational power. Of course an enhanced version of PS3 remote play could help with a lot of that. As could a device that can manage 720p/1080i display. We'll have to wait and see how they do this, but I have a coupe of ideas.
Hello Ben and everyone else. Long time reader, first time commenter here.
It would seem to me that Sony would really be dropping the ball on this thing if they didn't take full advantage of the remote play capabilites currently available. Reports say this thing will have an "always on" connection. If this is the case, they should just make it be able to hook up with your PS3 and play anything you have in or saved on it.
If they did this, it wouldn't have to be horribly powerful or expensive and could play all your PSN games. Developers would probably dig this too; it would end product fragmentation and all games could be developed for the PSN and you could play them at home or on the go. If it worked from like this from launch, who would not want one?
Anyway, that's just my .02. You can keep it if you want.
Welcome. 🙂
Welcome!
The first thing that POPPED OUT of the article to me, was…
"He then talked a bit about how Blu-Ray is far more appealing these days"
I hope that was a hint, & not just some kind of comparison. with the times today.

I think the comment about BluRay is a recognition that BluRay has become mainstream. I don't believe for a moment that the PSP2 will contain a bluRay drive. I'm not sure if there is even a mini-BluRay, I just haven't paid sufficient attention to that.
However, I think this may refer more to the high definition video standard than anything else.
The minute I bought my first blu ray game with my launch PS3 (RIP) I imagined BLUMD. Blu Ray UMD.
Highlander,
Yeah, I think he meant it in that context too,
But it's a lot like me & those damned Powerball & MegaMillions lotteries….
an ole fart can always dream! LOL

I am sure I will be interested in getting one, right up to to point when I hear how much it will cost!
Can't wait to see the specs on the PSP2.
Last edited by Nynja on 12/8/2010 9:30:07 AM
Ok, so IGN claims the the PSP2 will have roughly half the power of the PS3. If I remember correctly I believe it actually is about on par with the Nintendo 3DS.
Still want to see those specs…
IGN is talking through it's arse. There's no low power architecture available that can provide half the computer power of a PS3 for less than 1 watt of power consumption. It just doesn't exist, not even close.
Sorry, I should have been more specific. I meant processing power, not power consumption. Found some sources that claim the PSP2 will use the Nvidia Tegra 2 BUT this GPU has created a problem with power consumption – part of reason for delays. It's said that a mere 5% overage is unacceptable and the Tegra 2 is clocking at 20%+!
Further strengthening your statement regarding power consumption.
http://www.otakultura.com/psp2-power-causes-delays.html
Yeah, I read about the Tegra and it's power problem. What's odd to me is that despite 'knowing' that the GPU will be the Tegra 2, we don't have any solid information on the CPU. I wonder whether we are all barking up the wrong tree…
