The Yakuza series is very popular in Japan and thus far, the critics have quite enjoyed these flashy, atmospheric, story-driven beat-'em-ups.

Yakuza 3 was the first entry for the PlayStation 3 and we know Yakuza 4 is already out in Japan (so if the third sells well here in the US, we might see the fourth). However, it seems that Sega is done with the PS3 for a while, as they want to bring this brutal basher to the PSP. According to Kotaku , the latest Famitsu edition not only told us all about the perfect score for Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker , but it also opened our eyes to "Project K," the newest Yakuza installment. It's a portable title and will not feature the traditional protagonist and total bad-ass, Kazuma Kiryu; instead, we get a new, younger guy named Tatsuya Ukyo. The magazine also tells us the setting will be Kamurocho, which will be an easily recognizable name for fans of the series. We'll miss Kazuma because he's so freaking awesome, but he was already getting old in Yakuza 3 …and only Hideo Kojima can make a hero go gray and still keep him as kick-ass as ever.  I mean, that requires special skill.

Besides, PSP owners could use a game like this. It should be both lengthy and a blast to play – provided Sega can implement the combat controls correctly on the PSP – so portable players ought to be enthusiastic.

Yakuza 4 has multiple protagonists, actually, not just Kazuma. Don't know all their names, though.

I just hope that Yakuza 4 makes it to the west and doesn't cut out 13% of the substories and hostess bars. Don't get me wrong, I am absolutely loving Yakuza 3 and despite what some extremely opinionated people have said it does not feel like an incomplete game by any stretch of the imagination, I just want the full experience.

To me it seems like producing console sequels on psp is a step backwards, why wouldnt you want to make each game bigger and better than the last one? I have to wonder why game companies are starting to do this more and more, is this the equivalent of console exclusivity last gen since MS doesnt have a handheld like some sort of safety guard to keep M$ from buying everything? I'm not speaking on Yakuza in particular just all the console to psp sequels.

Don't be too sure about M$ not stealing early exclusivity of psp games. Pretty soon all the console games will be too much for the 360 without the use of 5 or more discs so they'll just start going after psp games instead. 😉

Does anyone one know if Yakuza 3 racked up enough sales in US & Europe to get the 4th game?

I'd be happy to help, but I doubt PSXE would able to make such a thing so as they would have to ship us the review copies, trust us not to be opinion based, and well work for free. While I'm confident in my ability to be objective if such a thing were ever to happen, along with the proverbial flying pigs, I suppose they would have to add a disclaimer that the views of member reviews were not the views of PSXE 🙂

Nice idea though, and thanks for the mention.

nice its about fu**ing time the psp got a decent game!
all i ask is……….

1 please for the love of god release it worldwide, none of this 12 months later BS!

2 get rid of all the freaking text, if i wanted to read a book i would read a book.
but thats never going to happen, ive already got 3 harry potter sized books to read for tafe i think thats enough for a few weeks.
god, who would of known programming could be so painful?

3 get rid of the fu**ing babysitting, i already have to look after my cuzs kids every friday and tuesday night i think thats bad enough!

4 place a fu**ing marker on the map so i know where to go.
simple, no?
neir can do it, every other game ive played can do it, so why yakuza?
honestly its so freaking frustrating!
in neir you go home to find your daughters not there so instead of having me running around in circles like a headless chicken neir placed a big fat red x where i should look for her.
simple,no?
why the ^%$# couldent yakuza do that!?
