Tokyo Game Show Sees Small Decline In Attendance

While it has been a tradition that every new Tokyo Game Show sees a slight increase in attendance, the world's biggest gaming event took a small step backwards in 2009.

Last year, the show pulled in a total of 194,288 visitors (this includes both press and the public) but this time around, according to the Computer Entertainment Supplier's Organization , the overall attendance number dipped to 185,030. It's not a significant slip but its indicative of the lack of huge news – as evidenced by the low-key keynotes and press conferences – and we should probably note that the same number of industry professionals showed up for the business days. Here's a look at the day-by-day breakdown of attendance; as you can see, it was only Day 3, the opening day for the public, that saw the decrease reflected in the final tally:

In 2010, show organizers say they will return to the Chiba prefecture's Makuhari Messe convention center, although CESA isn't quite sure if they'll have a three-day or four-day show. Either way, it's going to mark the 20th Tokyo Game Show, so hopefully, they'll have all sorts of big stuff planned. This year, we really didn't have much of anything; the big news actually came a little earlier at GamesCom (PS3 price drop, PS3 Slim, etc.).

Seeing how the japanese console market(not arcade/amusement) business is flagging, its quite obvious why the attendence was low.

Overall I highly doubt Namco,SEGA,Konami and Capcom cared given the fact the arcade/amusement business have doing quite well for them.

i reckon those that didn't attend were playing on their nice new ps3s and didn't have time.

It's a small decline
Amazing how small decline makes it seem "bad"

I also blame the fact that there are too many other game events in Europe

This is really hurting the TGS

Damn
Well, get the Slim my friend

Sorry to hear, but I guess it's inevitable with the older models…

Don't think many Slims get them

By the way, it's $150 if you want to send it back to Sony for repairs

I would like to be able to attend these kind of shows. It would be a blast.

I was there on day one. Even with a drop it was an hour wait to play GT5 or Tekken 6. Worth the wait but needed some more chairs.

why do these things always have to be close to the end of the month.
for once can we have them earlier in the month?
before the 15th.
E3,gamescom,PAX,TGS i was not able to watch any videos from either of those because by the time they were on i was already over my download usage.
and once that happens watching a 2 minute video incurs 5 days of waiting for it to buffer.
