It was one of the biggest announcements during Sony's E3 press conference, and not long after, Jeff Rubenstein sat down to have a chat with Gran Turismo series creator Kazunori Yamauchi.

Recently posted over at the PlayStation Blog , they talk about Gran Turismo PSP and how challenging it was for Polyphony Digital to produce a full-fledged GT installment on a machine with a lot less memory and a slower CPU speed. Obvious sacrifices had to be made but at the same time, Yamauchi says they wanted to insure that when someone picked up the game, they knew it was Gran Turismo . In other words, he didn't want the experience to be lacking just because it was on a portable gaming device. Then they touch on Gran Turismo 5 and Rubenstein asks how Yamauchi intends to stay above the competition: the master responds that what we saw in the trailer at E3 was just a "small portion" of what the team is currently working on, and if they match their lofty expectations, he's confident GT will continue to reign supreme in the racing world. Lastly, they talk about the bad-assery of the Nissan GT-R, which – as we auto fans at PSXE already know – was partly designed by Yamauchi and Polyphony. Oh yeah, and it beat the bullet train, too. HAha!

We always like to find interviews with Yamauchi, just because he always seems to have great stuff to say. We have no doubt that GT PSP and GT5 will be beautiful and supremely accomplished, and we wait with bated breath for the announcement of that GT5 release date… By the way, you can land GT PSP this October.

I think we're all expecting great things from the PSP version, even though it's clearly a shrink of the game.

That said GT and GT2 ran on PS1 hardware. GT4 ran on PS2 hardware which at the end of the day had less memory than the PSP and is perhaps on par from a CPU point of view, and a touch more advanced from a GPU point of view. So I think we will be getting something approaching the quality and accuracy of the PS2 iterations of GT, but with a bit of next gen flare thanks to the work for GT5 and the interconnectivity of the titles and teams at Polyphony.

Either way, this is a pre-order/day 1 purchase for me. I can't wait to get my hands on this game.

Yes, I have to say technically it is really fantastic what the Polyphony has pulled off. There are some very very clever people working there no doubt. It will be a thrill just watching the pSp push out those visuals.

Saying that though; I must say I am continually impressed with the inroads Apple's iPhone is making. With ID getting into the games making arena now for the iPhone specifically, the iPhone hardware is looking good and I think will only get better…

At this moment, if Polyphony can pull off GT on the current pSp hardware it shows their are legs yet on the little portable… I think this is primarily due to the GPU sitting therein. The processor is not that fast, but GPU and its media processing abilities really help the CPU along.

The Highlander; how good is the pSp GPU generally and what kind of "bandwidth" does it pack? Is the pSp like a scaled down Ps2 or not essentially?

Q!

Well, the PSP's CPU is closer to the PS2's capability as it's a twin core MIPS design with a supplemental math core. The GPU is actuall a dual core chip with each core handling different things. However the bandwidth (5.3 GB/second), clock speed (166MHz max) and bus size (256-bit) of the PSP GPU is far inferior to that in the PS2. That said it's capable of 33 Million polygons/second and over 500 million pixels per second. Even at 60 frames per second the PSPs screen only requires about 15 million pixels per second to be rendered.

Given the limited screen resolution of the PSP, the PSP does have the capability of going the long haul.

As much as i want GT5 for psp, i really hope they arent taking dev time away from the ps3 version for this. I've never wanted a racing game as much as GT5.

Target messed up and labeled the price of Prologue at 9.98usd. They had to give it to me at that price. Another win for physical media over digital download!

Bring on GT PSP !

That price wasn't a screw up. Nationwide clearance going on, while supplies last, of the non-Greatest Hits versions.

@ mordakai1, Target are AWESOME because they don't clearance out an item based on age but because they have a small section for games. Once they have new titles coming, they discontinue some titles, clearance them out and make room for what's coming. I get a lot of great deals there. That's how I got Madden XX edition for $22.48 only one month after release.

Come on dude, lying to us just makes you look dumb. Nearly everyone on this site is an advanced user of the PS3. Here you go….

Fact: You can not copy and play games from your PS3 hard drive. Yes, you can copy the ISO of a game onto your hard drive using an app that is a very private beta (I have it), but the Swiss Army Knife app which will eventually allow you to play them from the drive is not yet available publicly or as a beta, so there is no way to play them from the drive.

Fact: Largest single enclosure 2.5 SATA drive currently available: 500GB. I have it, and it is sweet.
I looked everywhere for a bigger one a few months back so unless it is less than 3 months old, that is BS.
So you can have a half TB in your PS3… So you have 2 750GB externals? OK, that is possible.

PSP…. um that is a huge card. I do not have a PSP, but that does not sound right to me…

Just be honest, it is too hard to keep track of all of the lies and you may have to create more to cover to others. Do yourself a favor and just be true to yourself and others and you will find people will like you more.

Also, we will not laugh at your outragous comments. This one is worse that your Huge TV comment a few weeks back that you "typoed".

Oh, and really, you copy PS3 games to your hard drive and play them?? That is not yet possible, and if it was, trust me I would be one of the first ones to have it.

I have a hard drive for the wii, PS2, and 360 that were installed pretty close to the day the ability was available.
I am not bragging, but I am very heavy into the modding world and not much slips by me as I keep very tight tabs with a lot of the developers that are currently trying to exploit the PS3, and have access to several beta applications from them that are not available to the general public…

@PS3Addict.

Not sure about your 'fact' on ISO images. The utility you describe as far as I can find out has not surfaced since 2007. To install it, you have to tell your PS3 you're installing LINUX so the app is running inside the hypervisor. It can read the ISO image of the BluRay disc, and apparently write it to the HDD – over the top of the OS. When the PS3 reboots, the PS3 thinks that the game is in the BD drive. As you say, it won't play because the disc isn't actually in the BD Drive. Not a terribly effective or practical method I think you'll agree. Certainly this person claiming that they do it all the time is overstating things.

I also seem to remember that when this 'tool' first got a demo, it turned out to be a fake that was being driven by a PC. The other supposed PS3 hack I've ever heard about was supposedly someone hacking Home, but it turned out all they were doing was proxying the web connection and replacing image files in the proxy's web cache, so that the PS3 would show a different image from the one intended….not exactly a hack, more of a filter.

As for a 1TB or 2TB drive inside a PS3, nope no chance, the closest you can get is an ESATA connection to an external 2TB enclosure. I know, I upgraded briefly to a 1TB external, but reverted to a 250GB internal as I hated having the cable hanging out of the side of the system. Too vulnerable to being unplugged at an awkward moment. As for the PSP thing, don't get me started on the topic of the PSP and a 1Tb drive….LOL! Folks should stick (no pun intended) to memory stick pro duoss or the adapters that take mini/micro SD cards, or allow the use of two Memorystick M2 mini cards in a single Pro Duo slot.

I think it's time to stop feeding….

jmo_INDY_Repub,

Whether or not all stuff you say you've got or done is true or not, is there anything else you can do beside being a braggot in most of your posts????
Who cares if you mod, and if you've even noticed, the administrators here frown on it being posted here all the time.

My advise, chill out by kicking back while enjoying the site, and try adding something more meaningful, instead of always trying to impress everyone & you'll get along with mostly everyone here just fine.

Small portion of what the team is currently working on? I thought they were basically done and ready to release aside from some more polish. But at least with the PSP game coming in October we can figure GT5 won't be too far away from that release.

@mordakai

Well, either those that have done it are managing to keep it extraordinarily quiet, or it's not been done. I'm going for the not been done thing. That said, some would say that merely lifting an ISO image from a BD and copying it to an HDD constitutes hacking. Personally, I'd call BS on that completely, but then I perhaps have a higher threshold than some for accuracy.

Alienange
Alienange

Funny, I could have sworn in the original thread you had said the "typo" was supposed to be 70" not 32".

TheHighlander
TheHighlander

It's been possible to rip an ISO from a BluRay almost since the first day that a BluRay drive was attached to a PC. Merely dumping an image is pretty useless without the ability to either re-burn or install on an HDD. Incidentally I'm pretty sure that the PS3 can detect burned BDs and will simply not play games from them…

PS3addict
PS3addict

Yes, you can dump the image to the drive but what app are you playing the games with?

The PS3 and OtherOS are completely seperate entities and can not readwrite data between each other. I know you are not using Linux to emulate the software since that OS can not currently take advantage of all of the cells processing power and uses the n board memory to do things, and the fact that there are no PS3 emulators built yet does not help either.

Just keep it real OK?.

Oh, and Yes Highlander you are 100% correct. You can burn the image onto a Bluray disk, but you get an media not recognized error from the PS3. Been there, tried that, and utterly failed. Even tweaked several files in the ISO before the burn and no luck.

GT5 shouldn't be too far off from GT (psp) since they did say one would be able to transfer vehicles from PSP to PS3 right? I don't know about the other way around but the idea is that ps3 and psp are becoming more active w/each other as time goes on.

PS3addict
PS3addict

@ The Highlander
Yes the app I am referring to runs as OS1 or OtherOS. It takes the place of Yellowhat or any other flavor of Linux you have installed unless you swap a file back and forth before exiting the OtherOS.

In regards to "ISO" copying, yes it can be done, I have done it, but it is nothing more than a backup and they are currently useless. The app essentially "rips" the data in 3+gb (I think 3.7GB) chunks, tranfers it to a PC, and once complete, you run a command at cmd to compile them and rename them as a .ISO file. You can then send it back to the otherOS partition on your hard drive.

Swiss Army Knife was an original concept that has essentially died and other developers have picked up the source code and tweaked it. They are currently working on a loader to launch the game files, but there has been no head way in the last several months.

@ Mordakai1: There is currently a PS2 USBLoader that will ruin PS2 games from the external drive of a PS3, but only on 20gb and 60gb systems and requires a lot of crap to work…
From what I have read, (I have 1 40gb) really has a lot of limitation and currently only supports usb1 not usb2.0 speed transfers.

I am not trying to hijack this thread, but this guy has quite an imagination.
