Last week we informed you that there's a very good chance that the copy of Patapon 2 you buy at your local retailer will be nothing more than a box with a booklet and a download voucher. Well, that turned out to be true and Sony has sent out an image displaying exactly what you'll find within your Patapon 2 box.

So if you needed an illustration, here are your pictures of the coupon and booklet. It's nothing special, obviously, and you're best off probably avoiding the hollow case and just opting for a straight download via PlayStation Store, which will also save you $5. While I personally enjoy my physical copies, for games such as Patapon 2, which are fairly small in size, it does make more sense for Sony to just make them downloadable titles, instead of spending money on manufacturing thousands of UMDs, and the like.

Patapon 2 is the first PSP to be given this treatment, and if Sony considers its experiment a success, consider it not the last, as this may very well become the future of the PSP platform as a whole. With the new PSP rumored to be free of a media-drive, downloadable games are something you may have to get used to in due time.

well, we have pondered how the future of gaming would look like without a physical medium… and it appears guys, the future may very well have taken its first steps out of thought, and into reality…

It took those first steps a while back now. You may have heard of this thing called the 'iPhone'.

ok, sure… if you consider it a console, then fine.. but what I meant was this kind of purchase is most likely the big "REPLACEMENT" of retail gaming… like a retail/digital hybrid… this would keep places like gamestop, aswell as other retail gaming stores open in the age of non physical media… not 2 mention the fact that those that aren't ready to accept digital downloads would at least get something tangible to represent their purpose…

itunes can keep doing what they're doing… but if sony's way of doing it goes mainstream, i believe sony's way will be more popular…

i seriously hope this 'test' fails. I see no problem with offering both, but when you offer only one, (excluding hard copy since anyone can get it), it severely limits the amount of buyers, not everyone has internet capabilities or the space required to get the game meaning they're forcing you to buy a new memory stick…

Seems like Sony is the one truly trying to be pushing the digital distribution. Microsoft keep saying they are supporting digital distribution, and destroying blu-ray, but i haven't seen them do anything buy promote DLC. Which are ruining the gaming market btw.

Well one thing is for certain, it will give the title more visibility for the rack-browsers. How could that be a bad thing?

Following comment is unrelated:

Oh Arnold, you're my best friend in the whole world, new best friend forever… who needs Ben when you've got Arnold…. just kidding Ben, just kidding.

Uh.

I don't like this at all, and I don't think I could ever get used to paying money, and getting a piece of paper in return.

Look, i think we are getting a glimpse of what the future will look like, besides "mature" platforms like iPhone/iTunes and PSP wireless purchases from the PSP store etc.

This digital distribution model cannot be stopped. I have made many points about it before in this comments section over the past year when ever the topic has arisen… and I stand by what I have said…

It is the future… enough said!

Q!

Well, the future's starting to look a bit sucky.

They should have just gone both ways
(and I'm not talking about AC/DC either)

@Biker, I see what you did there! lol

Also I have to agree, just put it in both formats, they're really not losing any money for putting in on psn, other than that tax thing so it should have been no problem to use some money for hard copies.
