Sony is introducing cloud streaming to their remote play device, PlayStation Portal, in a huge new update. At this time, it’s only in beta and limited to who can access it.
On the PlayStation Blog, VP of product management, Hiromi Wakai, announced the update, which includes improvements to the peripheral’s audio side as well as beta testing cloud streaming with select PS5 games.
Over 120 games part of the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog are part of the experiment, including first-party titles like Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, Ghost of Tsushima, and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales alongside third-party fare like Dave the Diver.
What’s more game streaming can get up to 1080p at 60 FPS, though, it’s important to note this will vary based on the game and internet connection. Now, for the downside — you need to be at least a Premium tier PS Plus subscriber to access the cloud streaming feature.
Overall, this looks like a huge step in the right direction and closer to what critics were hoping for with the Portal, though, granted Sony doesn’t need to prove anything as the peripheral continues to sell very well.
