Ben’s Week In Review: September 22

Who's lovin' GTAV? 🙂

The PlayStation 4 should get off to a running start

I'm big on first impressions. I believe they're critical in all walks of life; they're not limited to social interaction. It's crucial that a product like the PS4 makes a great impression on consumers and in fact, that impression has been cultivated and maintained since February.

I'm actually a little surprised, simply because I still remember well the debacle that was the PS3 launch. I wasn't entirely convinced that Sony would remedy all the mistakes they made with that hardware release but you know, maybe they have. It's even more encouraging to learn that Sony expects to "immediately" recoup losses incurred during the first leg of the PS4's lifespan. Sure, they'll lose about $60 per sale but even when the customer buys one game, they break even. Toss in the required PlayStation Plus subscription and Sony has already turned a small profit. A huge difference when compared to the PS3 release.

All things considered, I think Sony's estimate of 5 million units sold worldwide for fiscal 2013 is conservative. They might do a lot better than that, provided there's at least some availability in all regions beyond pre-orders. It should also help a great deal that the PS4 will be out in all territories before March 31, 2014, even though it will only have about a month's worth of sales in Japan. 5 million? Sure, why not?

I anticipate more GT hate when GT6 arrives

Every time a new Gran Turismo releases, it proves my theory that not all video game reviewers are qualified to analyze simulators. In fact, very few are qualified. I can work very hard to deliver an accurate, informed review for a flight simulator, but it will never be as good as a review written by someone who actually knows something about flying. Same goes for racing. They also seem to forget that when it comes to simulators, it's all about the gameplay and the realism/immersion. The only problem is that in addition to being mostly ignorant about the subject, many critics also gave GT5 flak for feeling "incomplete." That was BS but those same naysayers will be out in droves when GT6 hits, mostly because of what Yamauchi has been saying.

He first said the team would be tweaking gameplay elements right up until the moment of launch, and then he said there's some scheduled content they "haven't touched yet." Yamauchi is a perfectionist so the idea that he'd release a subpar product seems unfathomable; furthermore, with such an ambitious endeavor, there's no doubt that he'll want to be tweaking constantly. He'd tweak for years if he could. But people are just going to point to those headlines and then give the game a 7, despite the ridiculous amount of content that is guaranteed to be included.

Personal gaming update

Grand Theft Auto V is the bomb-diggity and absolutely deserves every penny of that $1 billion in sales . Of course, with any game that scores that high on average, the ego-trippers have to come out of the woodworks and explain why they're right and everyone else is wrong; that there are all sorts of problems the critics are conveniently "ignoring." I can't even begin to describe how senseless that sounds (ask any legitimate reviewer) but that's the way things are. And it doesn't really matter, because so many people are obviously having tons o' fun with the game, and that's all that counts. Just be careful, lest you lose yourself in your "hermetically sealed world" and go insane!

I should get reviews done for Puppeteer and NHL 14 this week, and I also have Disgaea D2: A Brighter Darkness . It's just so hard to focus on other things when GTAV is sitting in the machine, begging me to take on the next mission, and the next mission…and the next mission…

For most people the PS4 will probably make that right impression with a list of top third party cross gen games to boast, and Killzone SF. What will be crucial to making that impression the best possible will be a strong showing of customer service, a non-broken rollout of the network and console features, and an actual marketing campaign. Even if the marketing isn't needed to sell that many consoles (most are locked in pre-order) gamers REALLY like to see commercials about how cool the sh*t they just bought is. It stimulates more spending.

I don't play GT but I figure there aren't many living reviewers who can enjoy any kind of simulator what with the twitch trend.

60 hours into Tales of Xillia and there seems to be a whole lot left to do. The story has really expanded way past the original political theme (way out into existential modern-world-problems awesomeland)and the battle system just keeps on growing. This is what's nice about JRPGs, the way they are built their battle systems evolve over dozens of hours. Action RPGs are pretty much locked in one form the whole game, that's why I don't want them to become action RPGs.

I saw an interview with Tets Nomura the other day, the things he said about FFXV were incredibly disturbing to read.

I'm not loving GTA.

PS4 looks to be all aces. Though I wish some stronger titles would get announced. I feel MS commands the lead in the more readily available games department. They do have their flagship racer ready for launch day on a 'next-gen' platform. Titanfall will smash KZ in sales whenever it launches and Ryse has a chance at being a hit. Personally, I wish I could try Killer Instinct but oh well. Not a biggie. But I do think all of that is fighting against it's hefty price tag and horrible first public impressions.
I hope the Vita-PS4 remote play feature takes off. Both Ico and SotC work wonderfully. I've tested them with my PS3. I'm very interested in this feature now.

PGU: It's been DOA5: U and AC3. I'm really enjoying AC3. Having started over for the PC I'm more prepared in what to expect pacing wise. It's best played slow and leisurely. It definitely has more bugs than any game should but the core of it's play is intact, which there's just nothing else out there like it. It looks so gorgeous too on my computer. The Frontier is very nice. They also did a much better job optimizing core usage for this port. I know. I can see the performance of my cores while it's playing with an app.

I gave gtav a rent. I played it for 5 minutes, and decided I can wait for the pc version (allegedly launching in nov/dec). After playing Sleeping Dogs on my 2 year old laptop, and even InFamous 2 on ps3, gtav was just way too laggy for me to enjoy.

The overdone vulgarity, although ignorable to me, came across as forced, as if R* was trying too hard for an mc-17 rating. Visually, while gtav has an obvious improvement over gtaiv, still pales when compared to previous R* productions like Red Dead and LA Noire. True, the virtual world is larger than the two combined, but Just Cause 2 doesn't have that problem. The gaming mechanics and control responsiveness, while also improved, is rickety compared to Sleeping Dogs, even during closed world gaming sequences.

Even still, R* remains master of key areas (aside from tackiness), which are the subtle touches that create a convincing open world… the npc conversations, their behavior during random and dynamic events like weather, traffic, cop chases, and your interaction during gameplay. And in an even massively, larger world, they have managed to create that rather than copping out with a post-apocalyptic setting. That is a feat both production-wise and technologically. Aside from that, they are also masters of online gaming in open world play, proved both by gtaiv and read dead (which i hear is gonna be up in running on Oct 1).

Still, it isn't for everyone. And, despite the hype, I came dang near to passing on it this weekend, but i think writing this drawn-out comment convinced me otherwise.

Also, I should mention i completed my first play through of TLOU last week (yeah, i was late to the party), and I must say, aside from being in top 5, if not top 3, games of this gen, it was also a superior production in cinematic productions in general. While quite a few have commented on all things trope and cliche in it, I didn't experience that problem, considering the only horror-survival movies in recent memory i've seen were The Road and a movie, which i regrettably wasted time this weekend watching, World War Z. What i was amazed by is 5 minutes of gameplay and cutscenes in TLOU was far more entertaining than 2 hours of watching WWZ (or even The Road). The lead characters were beautifully developed, complimented by doppleganger reflections throughout the game. The narrative posed interesting questions about the duality of morality and necessity, choice and rights, and the ending, I must say without giving away too much, was unexpected and thought-provoking. Regarding the gameplay, the tension is high, but not oppressively so like in Deadspace, and is impeccably paced, allowing one to play longer and with more enjoyment without being burned out. The stealth was a tad wonkier as compared to MGS4, but the action and controls are far more responsive and fluid than any other game in the genre.

@Shams: I absolutely loved the ending of TLoU. Like you said, it's thought-provoking and completely unexpected. That game is one of my absolute faves now, and certainly gets my vote for Game of the Year. Yes, I am enjoying GTA V and really liking it, but it hasn't made as much impact to me as TLoU did. I haven't finished it yet, though, so it remains to be seen if that will change by the time that I do.

Oh, that ending was stunning. I thought that the last chapter was a bit hackneyed in terms of what you had to do, but the actual narrative elements… simply brilliant.

Nothing to be sorry about, Ben. It's been a while since i played red dead, and i have to admit, i only played a few minutes of opening game play. Even still, I wasn't as in awe as i was when i played the opening sections of red dead and la noire.

I sincerely doubt that the PS4 will hit that 5-mil. mark. I acknowledge that it's possible, but I just don't think that there are that many people who are going to be leaping on board when there are comparatively few games available. Then again, the line-up does have something for everyone and it's not nearly as anaemic as other launches have been so… maybe I'm the one of few who feels that way.

That being said, with all that Sony's said and done since the unveiling, there's no doubt that there are a lot of people out there who are going to be picking it up, and I wouldn't be surprised to see Sony taking the undisputed sales crown again early into the next-gen and not relinquishing it.

I've said it before, but GT5 was blasted for not being a *game*. It's something that I disagree with, because it is not meant to be a game; when you're dealing with something like GT, it's more about the actual driving experience and your personal drive to go further and faster than it is about directed progression and menu systems. From what I gather, however, Polyphony have made massive strides with GT5 2.0 and they'd be foolish not to implement them going forward. It'll still be blasted and compared unfavourably to Forza 5, but.

Personal Update.
Got my niece and nephew with me over this coming week, so I'm probably not going to be able to get much done :/ So it goes.
Finished reading The Beach. I thought that it was actually a really well-written novel, except that the climax and denouement felt rushed. Yes, the lead-up to it was suitably nuanced, but just the way that Tet panned out felt odd. It actually reminded me of an adult version of Lord of the Flies, if I'm being honest. Really good novel, but. Started on The Power of One, by Bryce Courtenay yesterday. Having already read its sequel, Tandia, it's interesting to see the trials that Peekay had to go through as a boy. It's really involving, too. I just kept going back to it throughout the day and now I'm almost 200 pages in. I anticipate that it'll be finished by this time next week.
Thankfully, I picked up a couple of new books yesterday – Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, by Hunter S. Thompson. Also got the latest movie adaptation of Anna Karenina. Probably watch it next weekend.
Traded in Dishonored and XCOM (will be picking up XCOM: Enemy Within Commander's Edition at some point to replace it) and got Puppeteer, GTA V and Bioshock Infinite. I wasn't going to grab the last, but at $39, I could hardly pass it up. Onto Act 3 of Puppeteer and I'm still undecided about it. It's a solid game, but kinda bloated and very, very strange.

Questions for GTA fans.

Can I use the city as a playground? Like can I just climb into any building I want to, beat up the people inside, hang out the window, shoot at the people on the street, climb towers and stuff to make a snipers nest. Can I go from rooftop to rooftop and drop bombs on people below. Can I hide out in some fools basement while the cops go by. Can I collect the bodies of my victims in a dump truck and cruise them corpses down to the east side so we can have a corpse party.

Killa Tequilla
Killa Tequilla

Not sure if serious or trolling, BUT… You can't interact with dead bodies nor vehicles. HOWEVER, there are more features you can do with vehicles like tow cars, transport vehicles with the chopper or a submarine for that matter, scubba dive, and much more. Most buildings have ladders now so you can get on top of them. And rock star put so much detail into thus game its unbelievable. For example, you can add bumpers and such to your truck, but doing so may cause you to hit rocks and hinder your off road capabilities. So when I'm offroading, I remove a lot of parts from my vehicles so I can traverse much easier without bouncing too much. Then there are many many references to movies and other games. You may find a No Country For Old Men re enactment!! It's just highly detailed. You will hear different sounds if youre crossing a bridge because its made of metal, than riding thru the highway. They put a lot of detail into the game and I notice it. Flying is a bit more realistic now, as the chopper or plane shakes because of wind.

You should give it a try, it's worth renting at the kiosk. This is my type of game. Lord have mercy on those people souls whose cars I will tow away and drive away online. I will be the very best at towing away vehicles. I'll be corrupt. Because I'll choose to be a corrupt tow-man.

I was half kidding but yeah I'm wondering if it's extensively more interactive as a city and if I could move dead folks like in Hitman.

I'm sure I'll buy it somewhere down the line, gonna wait on the PS4 announcement I think though.

So basically most of the buildings are still closed right?

Killa Tequilla

I believe so. But there are more open budings and such. There's some construction going on. There are also unmarked on the map 24/7 stores and small banks which yo can enter to rob. This world is huge. Rough estimate, the city is about 30-35% of the map, the rest is awesomeness, a lot of desert. I love this game for one because it has a lot of Mexican influence, (I'm not sure if the following is a spoiler, but spoiler alert???))

I cannot believe rockstar had me killing aztecas they are a no joke back in mexico. They are ruthless and wreckless. Its not like rock star used a differname t for the cartel, they used the real name of the cartel. Which caught me by surprise. These people behead you! And post it online. Not sure how a company from London knows so much about mexico. its the attention to detail that really has me hookes, for example, you always see your shirt is wet from your sweat. Little thi gs like this.

Music is great too. Love me some ranchera on the Mexican channel.

Anyway, Im not sure how you couldn't possibly like tlou, and I'm not sure how you couldn't possibly like this game, but you've proven me with tlou that you're hard to please!! Give it a rent at least

No worries, my issues with TLoU have little to do with the quality of it and mostly to do with the fact that in the 10 hours I was able to play it I saw every single thing coming because it was done 100 times before. With GTA I at least know to expect that. Sounds like Rockstar should be careful or a cartel will come after them.

Well im looking forward to my PS4. But I gotta be honest Im seriously starting to think this generation did not need to end right now. Sony will continue to support the PS3 but its as strong as ever. Had the 360 not gone stagnent this generation probably would last another year. I believe on the PS3's good day it would still compete in terms of quality if developers like ND put in the time with it.

GT6 is like non existent to me. Once I heard GT7 would release for PS4 in a year or two I was no linger anxious for GT6.

I too believe GT6 will recieve some reviews it doesnt derserve. Its going to be good and as far as simulators go it will remain the best.

As far as GTA5 goes I dont think anyone doubts its quality. But GTA4 proved it and 5 is doing it again; things are getting overlooked. Im not here to say the reviews are wrong, Im here to say that reviews are aprehensive in the writing about some things, graphics and control in particular, yet at the end of the review it suddenly doesnt matter. This happens with a lot of games though and without getting to far off topic ME2 recieved the same treatment. That game had some terrible issues with rendering and again it didnt matter; but I loved ME2, and was able to get over it. Im wondering if sometimes this happens in reviews? Im asking as a legitimate question. Point is reviews are sometimes used as decisions on games and sometimes they are not held to the same level.

PGU: Diablo 3 and thats about it. Just started Hell mode on hard and I gotta back track and say Normal mode on Normal was super easy towards the end of act 2. My buddy and I were unstoppable. Granted we had some great gear, but even without it, I think our grinding (although minimal) had us just a little more powerful than the game was ready for. However now its starting to get more difficult and the bosses are actually lengthy fights. All in all im enjoying it. Fully intend to max out my character and try to beat this game on the highest difficulty.

Still playing with FuTz, eh? LOL

My friends and I already finished Inferno mode but I still need to play it again because I haven't played through all the acts. I was only invited to participate in defeating Diablo in act 4, while I'm actually still on the first act of the said mode. But with GTA V taking *all* my time since I got it, I'm not sure when I'd be able to finish it. LOL

1-2 years is pretty big gap, but I think common sense would lead us to believe it's closer to two years. Kaz also said they will be busy updating GT6 for at least a year post GT6 release. Another way to put it is that he may actually be expressing the development time, such as when they'll actually get started and focus on it, not necessarily 1-2 years from now that the game will be out. Just look at that part of the quote as a whole and what he was talking about prior. Remember that what he says are all translations so we may not be able to get the full expression of its meaning.

Put all that together, we probably won't see GT7 till at least 2015. That's like at least two years from now without Gran Turismo. I know for sure I can't miss out on GT6 if that's the case.

It's all entirely up to you, but if your reason to skip GT6 is purely because you may be seeing a GT PS4 in as soon as 2014, I really think you're going to miss out from this false hope, just because the chances of it happening is slim. GT6 is said to be breaking the boundaries in post support with content and updates. As he says, there's still a lot to touch up on. It wouldn't make sense to do all that while releasing a PS4 GT in the same year. If you don't really care much for GT as franchise, then that's another story.

bigrailer19
bigrailer19

ZettaI –

Yeah still playing. I think ill be able to get a lot out of Diablo 3. Again thanks for the help!

Daus –

My reason for not getting GT6 has nothing to do with hoping GT7 releases in 2014. My reason is I typically spend a lot of time with these games and to turn around and have another release (on the console GT6 should be on) while possobly still playing GT6 is discouraging. Id much rather waot for the proper next installment. Its nothing against GT. Im a huge fan, but I really want to play it on the PS4. So I cam wait.

bigrailer: Nothing is being overlooked. The graphics are amazing; they're just not quite to the level of something like The Last Of Us, but it's unfair to compare the two productions. The control is rock solid; when people say there are small eccentricities, that's exactly what they are. It controls just as good or better than 99% of all third-person games out there, with some very minor exceptions.

What you're not getting is that GTA is held to a higher standard, not a lower one. When people point out flaws, they're always VERY minor, and it's almost as if they have to find them to make the review realistic. There is zero incentive for any critic to ignore anything in GTA. In fact, there's much MORE incentive to come down hard, because that's the review that will get more attention and hence, more traffic.

The fact that this isn't happening very often at all says a lot to people in the industry. Gamers continue to get this wrong at every turn; they think reviewers are giving GTA some sort of pass when in fact, it's exactly the opposite.

bigrailer19
bigrailer19

And that all makes sense. But im not seeing it in the writing. When I read a reviewand the review, again is very unneasy towards certain things but it isnt reflected in the score I tend to wonder. But rather than make it sound like I think reviewers have a hidden agenda I just wonder if its easy to overlook things for certain games when said game is as good as for instance GTA5.

Like I was saying though, im not saying the review scores are wrong. Just sometimes what Im reading isnt trnslating correctly in my mind. Its not just a GTA5 thing either, so this isnt a bias towards the game. Im a GTA fan I want it to succeed.

You mentioned The Last of Us and how its unfair to compare the two. Well in that case why use the same type of evaluation. Games are being scored the same way but if its unfair to compare the two then why? Because there's only one system? Thats unfair to other games. Should the game get a higher score because the developers created a big world with good graphics? Is that what this is coming down to? Scoring the accomplishment rather than what it is?

Well, that's sort of what I mean. They want to at least point out a few drawbacks in the review because otherwise, it will sound biased.

Things can be overlooked in reviews; in fact, it happens all the time. But for a high-profile title like GTAV, no legitimate source is rushing that analysis. That's a very important review and they're not about to produce a half-assed evaluation.

As for the scores and TLoU vs. GTAV, both are still video games and both should use the same scale. It's just that critics have to judge how to reflect the differences in the scores. And not just the differences in gameplay, but the differences in the goals of the developers.

Thats how I feel that games are games and should be scored as is. If a large scale game is being reviewed it shouldnt get a pass for having lesser graphics and should be scored accordingly. The graphics dont seem to affect large scale games like they do a more linear adventure.

GTA V question. Compared to IV how bad is the language. I know to most people it's not a big deal, but I hate it when video game scripts are nothing but the F word surrounded with other profanities.

GTA IV I've never even heard an actual person use that much language, it doesn't even sound believable to me and it's pointless and irritates me, plus I can't play it in front of my wife.

I do however enjoy the gameplay and would love to enjoy this new installment. Any info regarding this would be helpful.

I honestly did not finish GTA IV because I really cannot get behind the terrible controls. It's so clunky and I kept dying on the simplest missions just because I struggle so much with the controls. It's too bad because I really wanted to play it.

That said, I cannot really compare it with GTA V. What I can tell you though is to prepare yourself for a barrage of F- and N-bombs, particularly when playing as Franklin and Trevor. Hmmmm, maybe that's why I play as Michael most of the time

I'm not sure if there are really people out there that cusses that much. I haven't encountered one like that, personally.

dunno if id say loving.
its nice to have GTA back and all, but its also just that more infuriating seeing every single R* game release with the same god dam frustrating annoying 2001 problems!
1 in what world is sitting on the side of the road watching a prostitute dismiss 10 people before the right guy comes up so you can assassinate him, in what world would that be considered fun?
in what world is driving a crane and driving a slow a$$ truck which CONSTANTLY keeps disconnecting its trailer every time you take the slightest turn, in what world would that be considered fun?
some missions are amazing, i mean getting the sh*ts with someone so you grab a tow truck and pull down a dudes house, classic!
others, well, see above.
R* still have this tedious boring obsession with trying to make things realistic.

2 the games so F*CKING FUSSY!
so many times ive failed a mission because of some stupid BS, like one mission you need to steal a getaway car, park it somewhere, than use the garbage truck to do the job, than drive the garbage truck to the getaway car.
once you get to the getaway car the game forces you to drive up to your car then blow the truck up.
uuuuuuuuum, how can i blow the truck up right next to my car without blowing up my car?
so you drive a little away from your car and the objective changes forcing you to drive right next to your car before it lets you blow the truck up and move on.
WTF does it F*CKING matter where the F*CK i blow up the F*CKING truck!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
the game just loves to be a nitpicky b*tch!
it tells you to measure out 2Ms of string, than strings and chastises you for 2 hours because you measurement was .1mms off.
WHO THE F*CK CARES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
the boring a$$ missions, the fussy nitpicky gameplay, its almost like they want you to get pissed off and hurl your controller through the TV!
i just cant understand why R* are so god dam OBSESSED with this boring nitpicky bullsh*t!

3 the game really is so 2001 in its gameplay elements.
there is no cover to cover mechanic.
really?
i mean come on games started adding that YEARS ago!
not to mention the no goons spawn till you reach the trigger point, i mean come on that is the lamest overused game design cliche in the history of the industry!
so f*cking frustrating you sit in cover and kill everyone, than wait a few moments and no one else is there, so you move up and BAM your dead because 10 enemies just magically appeared 2mms in front of you!
GGGGGGGGGRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!

its so frustrating playing any R* game these days, its just so annoying and disappointing that they consistently refuse to take anyones criticism to heart and change things!
its almost like they want to piss people off, they love boring people to death with their crane simulators, they love to piss people off with their nitpicky tedium.
when will they wake up and realize its 2013, not 2001!?
exactly why im really not looking forward to their next gen releases, what a ps4 title with features missing that became industry standard in the ps2 days?
no thanks!

the more and more time passes, more and more things keep happening that really makes me worried about next gen systems.
they really just dont seem ready to be launched in 2 months time.
adding to that today a demo broadcasted on japanese TV the system locked up and would not respond to anything.
and here i was hoping that these sorts of things would be a thing of the past.
im just really worried that were going to get, well, another wiiu launch!
that truly would be the end of "next gen" consoles…….
its going to be interesting at the EB expo whether games are actually running of dev kits, or PCs like previous events.
if launch titles are still running on PCs, 1 freaking month from release, well, theres a SERIOUS problem!

thats exactly what was so disappointing about GT5 though.
you can be the best sim in the world but if the games not fun, if the features are not up to scratch, than of course people are going to complain.
when such a large number of cars are FREAKING PS2 MODELS, when the series staples, when the franchise refuses to get with the times and add features other car sims have had for years, its kinda hard to not criticize especially when GT is SUPPOSE to be the true driving simulator.
hopefully GT6 will fix some of those, actually add a half decent damage model, return the licenses, and reduce the amount of fluff.
as the saying goes better to do little but do it well than do many but do it poorly.
GT has always been famous for its quality and attention to detail, 5 betrayed that and switched it around, thats why it got flagged like it did.
because it deserved it!

hahaha, while this is clearly overstated it hits some of the truth of my problems with Rockstar games. They really are exceptionally nitpicky in how you have to execute the missions so that you fail constantly for dumb things.

inFamous lets you do missions however the hell you want so long as you get the job done.

Somebody forgot to take their meds.

World: That really isn't true at all. There are countless ways to complete missions in GTA, far more options available than in any one mission in inFamous.

I've never felt that way, if I'm trailing a blimp in inFamous I can do it however I please, train tracks, car riding, high wire, gliding. If I'm following a car in GTA (past ones at least) the mission will fail if I go down the wrong street for a bit.

No, it only fails because you let the target get too far away from you, which happens in inFamous as well. Missions never dictate a path in GTA and make you stick to it.

And besides, inFamous is incredibly one-dimensional in comparison. You can't even access vehicles in those games, as much as I love them. And really, the missions in inFamous 2 were all very similar to one another, whereas in GTAV, there's a much, much more impressive variety.

Yes, because going down a street for a shortcut is what can cause the mission fail. The mission fails even though I know exactly where the other car is (and it isn't far) and I can catch up if they give me some space to approach the way I want, but because the game wanted me to do it their way and not mine that nitpickyness broke it.

Rockstar games are always like this with how you have to do things.
