There was a time when this question didn't involve a huge amount of games.

But if you look at the confirmed list of titles for next-generation consoles, you see a lot of open-world titles. Perhaps it isn't surprising to see developers taking advantage of the extra power in this fashion- larger, more dynamic, more realistic virtual worlds. I have a bad feeling that the days of true linear adventures are numbered, but that's another topic for another time.

For now, let's focus on your most-wanted open-ended, freedom-based next-gen game. At first, I probably would've said inFamous: Second Son , only because I adored the first two games and I'm about 99.4% certain I'll adore the third. But the more I see and hear about The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt , the more excited I become. Granted, there's more in the way of doubt (I'm not familiar with the series) but if CD Projekt RED can pull off what they claim, it'll be absolutely mind-blowing . I mean, we're talking about a title that has the chance to be evolutionary, if not revolutionary.

Then again, there are plenty contenders out there. Destiny is gonna be catnip for the shooter fans, for instance, and Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag is a definite possibility. Watch Dogs is another one, although it may not be quite as open-ended as other games on the list. Is there one I haven't mentioned that sits atop your priority list? Of course, you could just point to Grand Theft Auto V and be done with it, but that'd be cheating. It isn't set for next-gen consoles…at least, not yet.

Is Arkham Origins open world? I guess I'm having trouble defining what constitutes an open world game……..

If it's not, then maybe Destiny – or LEGO Marvel Superheroes!

I guess I can play all of those on my PS3. Hmmmmm……

Rime DOES look cool too. Tough question…….

I'd say its more of a sand box game. Open exploration but not quite as big as Red Dead or inFamous. Plus, correct me if I'm wrong but I thought the new Batman wasn't coming to PS4 or Xbone.

I believe you are correct. Not on PS4. My bad. 🙂

Lets just say that I'd buy an Xbox One for MGS V if it were an Xbox exclusive if that tells you anything about how excited I am!

Can't decide between infamous ss and the witcher 3. So ill go with fallout 4 😉 but no, I think the witcher 3 will be the system seller for me.

I draw a fairly stark line between open world and sandbox, which eliminates inFamous. While I'm highly interested in The Witcher I too am unfamiliar with the series and a little put off by the fact that I can't build my own character.

So I gotta go with the mother of all atmospheric RPGs, Fallout 4. It may be a long wait, but that's what I want the most. When that comes you guys aren't gonna see me for a month.

For me theres 4 titles that come to mind. The game that woukd top that list is only on top because there hasn't been a sequel this generation and thats a sequel to RDR. The other three would be the next Elder Scrolls, Borderlands 3, and Fallout 4.

I dont know if Elder Scrolls online qualifies?

Anyways those games get ke excited everyday and none of them have even been announced. Thats unfortunate.

I am looking forward to many new games. What I am not looking forward to is making a decision on which new gen console I should get first. Somebody make the decision for me so I can stop pulling my hair out.

I see many mention Fallout 4 but that's cheating – it's not confirmed yet. 🙂

Furthermore I agree that Watch Dogs don't seem to be a fully open world game, I got a feeling it will be more structured, still more open (or, larger maps/areas) than Deus Ex but in that same vein.

The Witcher is a game we just *know* will be great. But personally I am so tired of Fantasy-themed games, so I gotta go for Infamous: Second Son. What we've seen so far looks like super fun. Fantastic open-world problem solving solutions.

There wouldn't be a Bethesda research force crawling around Boston if F4 weren't coming to be the awesomeest force on the planet 🙂

AC4 will just be a series of maps like all the rest of the AC games, instead of land there'll be water.

as much as i loved the witcher 2, and really am looking forward to 3, i gotta go for second son.
infamous has always been just so much fun, and secondson seems so much more free form and fast paced, so that will hopefully make it feel that much more fluid.
im skeptical how open world watchdogs will be, i wont be surprised to see it like mafia 2.
set in a open world, but the open world really does not affect the game, and when it comes to missions its strictly linear.

Far Cry 4 and Just Cause 3….both games require alot of imagination to enjoy.

Both also can be played guns blazing or a stealth aproach, however your mood may be, and I like putting many hours into games like that.

Not really bothered whether on PS3 or PS4. My only concern with the direction many of the debs/publishers are going now is open world. Not all but more than I would have said previously. The concern is… how open are they and HOW MANY expansions in the form of DLC are there going to be. I would not want them to put on a $59.99 price tag on a game that .. say for example … only give ms one district in a city. Then all the expansion or dlc are 14.99 to open the city up to me. Let alone that there is no DLC and I am buying just a unlock to access at the same price.

Its a concern for me as a gamer, but I see a clear business direction here for debs/publishers. If I were them I would consider it but not to a point where I am really sticking it to the gamer/consumer. Thats just me.

Not sure this has happened yet or even if it will occur, but like I said. Its a concern.

Keep Playing.

PS – Still cannot get into GTA IV. Skyrim is more fun. 🙂

For me it's easily The Witcher 3. I loved the first two games and while it's going to be strange playing the third on a console with a controller, I think I will be able to adjust nicely. I can't wait to see what is in store for Geralt now.
