At first, it appeared that Sony was all sorts of ready to pump out millions of PlayStation 4 systems for the holiday season.

But it seems like due to overwhelming popularity, retailers are rapidly running out of pre-orders. Amazon is waiting to be resupplied and unless you've nabbed a "launch edition" PS4, they can't guarantee you'll see your order on release day. GameStop.com is still taking pre-orders but their brick-and-mortar locations only have a set number, and the stores around me are already getting close to the limit. Many sources are telling you to pre-order ASAP .

Maybe Sony didn't underestimate their machine; maybe they just didn't count on Microsoft essentially committing suicide. They shot themselves in the foot, the leg, the arm, the chest…it was a self-inflicted massacre, really. I doubt Sony saw that coming; I doubt anyone saw that coming. As a result, everyone is all pumped for the PS4 while the Xbox One has become a punch line. I mean, THIS is just getting pathetic . At this point, it's difficult to conceive of a Microsoft comeback, although it'll probably happen in some form. There are still plenty of sheep out there.

This is all fine and dandy but as I've said on many occasions, availability is critical for Sony. Every single new PlayStation launch has been plagued with a terrible lack of units; most times, consumers couldn't find one for months after the initial release. Regardless of how great people think it is, sales numbers are still gonna suck if stores don't have any to sell . It's also difficult to get people really excited about something they can't possibly buy anywhere. The "oh you can't have it so now you want it even more" philosophy only goes so far. Eventually, frustration just sets in.

So, here's hoping Sony can effectively supply all retailers with plenty of systems. Maybe they can ramp up production now that they've seen increased demand. Let's hope.

This is just for the record.

As of the time of this post the PS4 seems to be firmly glued to the number one spot on Amazon's best seller list in the video games category. It's presumably been there since the beginning of E3 or just about. And there's no reason to believe that's going to change anytime soon. It's an even more interesting picture on the Gamestop best seller list for all items. As of the time of this post the number one spot on the list is currently being occupied by The Last of Us (nice huh?). And spots 2 through 6 are currently being occupied by various PS4 bundles.

Laughed out loud at the suicide line, guess I'm just in a jovial mood about this turn of events.

I don't think Sony underestimated this time where reasonable sales were expected I just think the demand swung in their favor so big after so much bad MS press and at E3 it was as if MS came out and said "Hello idiots, we dare you to buy this thing!" Nobody could have predicted that.

Sadly I keep draining my bank account and I don't want to touch my market assets so I'll be late to the party. I mean how could I pass up a new copy of The Last of Us for $45 today? I just couldn't do it.

@World,

Have you looked at the internet in the last 15 years or so?

It's pretty much a guarantee that there is a market out there somewhere in the interwebs where you'd sell like hotcakes. 🙂

Okay, okay. I'm sorry, this is the first console that I actually will be buying at launch. I didn't have internet till sometime after the ps3 released, so any console that I used to have was because I blindly bought it. Or was gifted to me. My point is, what does it mean? What does it mean between now and ps4 launch day? Won't Sony just keep making them and supplying the console to retailers? We still have a ways to go. You would think they will have enough for 95% of the demand.

WorldEndsWithMe

There may be a few jitters because it became impossible early on to find a PS3. When you're out looking to drop $600 on a the finest new technology available you tend to expect it to be available. So it could happen again but for very different reasons.

I put down almost half at GameStop. All I know is I better get my console come launch day.

Now that I think no about it,$400 is really, really cheap! What a great price! Anyone can save $400 from now till lunch day.

I'm so far down on the pre-order list that I highly doubt I'll get one from the first shipment.

I personally think the Xbone will have a slow adoption rate the first year if things don't change by launch. Buy the time the holiday season comes around next year they'll most likely drop the price in time Halo 5 is released. They may be down but they're not out. So its imperative Sony takes advantage of this by having systems available. I mean, I think they should considering the hardware should be easy to manufacture since its using established components.

I don't think the issue is price with regards to the xbox one, but it's the anti-consumer policies (among others: ex privacy) that have existing xbox users concerned (and when I say xbox users, I mean "gamers".

Xombito
Xombito

My worry is how gamers will start to look over all those policies and just make the jump. MS has some pretty cool looking games coming out. Unless those who keep picking up every Halo game is starting to get Halo fatigue. Especially after Destiny comes out.

I thought Sony planned on shipping 13 million units this year? That's a lot of systems. I'm sure preorders will open back up after the numbers are finalized. I've always wondered, if your initial shipment is. accounted for, what would be the point of advertising?

Thanks! I was going to wait to see if ere was a steep Amazon discount in a couple months as I've seen with other games recently, or wait to see if it came out for PS 4 as well. But I can't pass this up and it'll arrive around my birthday.

If you have three of anything to sell, your total sales were three.

Just because they were completely sold out of PS3s on launch day meant nothing. There were mere thousands available. …and yeah, that sucks.

Maybe sucks for those who can't find one, but I'm fairly sure companies love it when they sell out as fast as they make their product.

Coming from a long line of entrepreneurs, let me tell you the one thing business owners despise most of all:

An inability to meet demand. When someone wants to buy something that you don't have, it drives you NUTS. When millions want to buy it, it's like being in frustration hell.

You have to think….theres a good chance when the PS3 came out and you couldnt get one people went an got w 360. In all honesty i did get one of the first few shipments of the PS3 (only because i saw FF trailers, and i really wanted that starwars force unleashed) and sadly a handful of my friends (2006..so i was 19) didnt have money to sell out! We were all in college and i seemed to be the only working at the time but once they had some money and the PS3 was still no where in sight, they ended up getting an Xbox!

bigrailer19

I wouldnt count on polls and pre-orders to count MS out. The PS3 pre-orders sold out just as quick I tried to pre-order it and they flat out told me it wouldnt happen. Sure the PS3 was in a short supply of sorts but I actually did end up getting one without pre-ordering about a month after release. In fact i had 2 of them from 2 different locations. So it was available regardless.

But the MS fanboys are still at large. They are denying everything thats fact about the Xboxone. I had someone start and argument when I clearly didnt care to even talk about what the Xboxone did or didnt do cus frankly I just dont care. Anyways I dont think MS is in the type of hurt that is being portrayed. Ive realized after this morning that MS hasnt necessarily lost their customers yet. At least notenough to critically hurt them.

As far as I'm concerned, being sold out isn't a bad thing considering the travesty that was the PS3 launch.
Sony has the mindshare and momentum right now. I am excited to see the direction they take the PSN forward.

They now have launch bundles available on Amazon. Killzone, Knack, Battlefield 4, and Watchdogs. But they're not listed as $399.

I pre-ordered from Amazon the other day and did not get launch date (it said Jan 3rd delivery). But today they sent an email saying it was changed to launch day as they got more available.

Of course in the meantime I pre-ordered at gamestop… I might keep both, my kids are gamers too and we already have 2 PS3s. The price is really right.

I'm sure Sony is doling out units based on pre-orders taken and hopefully ramping up production as we speak.

More embarrassment for MS here, those E3 games were running on Windows 7 Nvidia GTX, not dev kits.

Honestly at this point World, I'm expecting anything that Microsoft does on the Xbone to not be running on the Xbone OS. This is unfortunate, but I'm not surprised.

I thought things looked a little too good…self inflicted massacre is right! Competition is a good thing, so I don't necessarily want M$ to 'thelma and louise' it on the Xbone, but if by any weird chance M$ replicates its ROD with some kind of system malfunction, Sega might want to scoot over and make room in the crypt.

Ultima

Not that I don't like beating the dead horse that is Microsoft bad news for this week, but this was apparently limited to one developer (Twisted Pixel). Others have confirmed that their stuff ran on Xbone dev kits.

If you want more -actual- bad news for MS, it's the fact that they're having serious yield issues, apparently due to the presence of ESRAM in their APU design, which could result in serious availability issues for them. There's serious anecdotal evidence from various Gamestops that have PS4 outnumbering Xbone pre-order slots (not pre-orders by customers, but how many units the stores expect to get) by 3 to 1.

MS could spin it into "out consoles are all sold out", but lack of availability will likely drive people who otherwise would have bought an Xbone to hardware that's available, ESPECIALLY since that hardware is cheaper.

White_Mocha

Sony usually sells the consoles at a loss the first few years, but running out of PS4 pre-orders? Unbelievable, at least to me. I tried pre-ordering but they ran out :/ With that being said, I hope with all this great news, Sony doesn't sell the PS4 at a loss this time around. Bring home the bacon Sony!

PC_Max

If I am to buy the PS4 it will not be until next Xmas possibly. Once its tried tested and made true by the gaming community. Along with hopefully a nice library selection to start. The Order looks appealing on face value as a new game.

That said, yep, Sony could make a killing in sales if they are able to get the supplies ready and in place in the next few months for Xmas. Of course THAT hopefully will not be at the cost of quality control in the places the console is manufactured just to get it out.

I am sure there will be many good and bad stories to be told at launch. And I would think most of it exciting for the gamers.

Keep Playing!

Pre-ordered months ago, but I don't think anyone expected the kind of mixed messages and botched PR from Microsoft that has really pushed demand up. It may change between now and launch (and MS have to improve from here – they can hardly do worse), but I'd be surprised if there aren't some availability issues as Ben rightly points out!

When I went to GameStop yesterday, they had a sign on the door promoting the PS4 and all accessories and games. No mention of the Xbone. That was quite surprising, and I'm not gonna lie, also nice. We Playstation fans have put up with the Xbox getting all the shine for a very long time.

I think they assumed the right demand up until the moment M$ decided to be complete morons and send their loyal customers to the PSN in droves.

Maybe this is some new tactic by M$. Try to overwhelm Sony with new customers and hope they'll collapse under the weight.
