This generation will soon be drawing to a close, so now it's time to ask: What were the best franchises of the current generation? Pick 'em out.

Everyone always asks about individual games, but this is referring to the IPs with multiple installments that continued to blow everyone away. How would you rank them?

Personally, it begins and ends with Uncharted , as far as I'm concerned. Nothing is really even close; two of the three iterations in this acclaimed franchises are absolutely in the top five of the entire generation, in my opinion. And the first was certainly worthy of an elite 9+ score, too.

I think I'd go with Bioshock second, because all three of those games have been excellent as well, and the latest ( Bioshock Infinite ) easily qualifies as one of the single best games of the past six or seven years. Assassin's Creed would probably be third, especially because Assassin's Creed II and Brotherhood remain two of the most accomplished and addicting games I've played in a long time, and Assassin's Creed III , despite some popular backlash, was yet another masterful production in my eyes. Black Flag is pushing it, though. Ubisoft should've taken a year off.

But what about LittleBigPlanet ? I mean, minus that kart racing game, there were two fantastic games for the PS3 and another awesome one for the Vita. In fact, if you check the scores, LBP, LBP2 and LBP Vita might have the highest average review scores behind Uncharted . Halo would've qualified if Halo 4 didn't feel so outrageously outdated to me, and I'd also like to put Gears of War on there, even though Uncharted outstripped it in every possible way. Oh, and while I'm not a fan, Mass Effect is a definite contender for the best franchise of the generation, isn't it?

If Batman: Arkham Origins is awesome, that'll be the third amazing Batman game of the generation, which means it would have to be near the top of the list. And I suppose you could make a case for MGS, even though the spin-off, Revengeance , might bring it down a little. I mean, it was a great game, but not as good as the likes of MGS4 and Peace Walker , I don't think. So, what other franchises could be considered the best of the best?

Final Fantasy XIII: The Series, lol.

I agree with Uncharted and Bioshock, and then inFamous. I'd add Elder Scrolls (Fallout doesn't make it because New Vegas was a letdown), and I'll happily add the Tales Of series once Xillia arrives.

It's really sad about Fallout: NV, isn't it? We feel precisely the same way. 3 was just so perfect that NV was made all the more a failure by comparison.

It was a shame because I was so hyped, I mean what a great idea to wander the ruins of Vegas. Instead we get a huge desert pocked with partially interesting areas and a tiny, utterly boring strip.

… Not to mention the stupid story. Yes, Fallout NV was a disappointment.

Controversial: I preferred New Vegas to 3. It had much more of a grey morality, rather than "this is the good option, this is the bad option". I also liked the interplay between all the factions.

The interplay between the factions were good, that's true. In fact I had forgotten about that.
But it's not like it was a *bad* game. It just didn't have that same oomph as Fallout 3 had.

Limited to ip's with more than one major outing this gen.
For me it's Mass Effect, Dead or Alive (360 had DOA4), Ninja Gaiden, Infamous, Batman, Assassin's Creed, GoW, and Uncharted. Heck, The Elder Scrolls is on there too. I suppose Halo too because I loved Halo 3 and thought Reach was good, and CE remake was nice, even if ODST and Halo 4 didn't do it for me. I assume Far Cry would be on there as well but I haven't played Far Cry 3 yet. FC2 was amazing though.

I'd say they're my best anyway. I won't speak for anyone else's.

Crap and I'm sure Darksiders is on there too once I play Darksiders 2. I thought the first one was a great start but it's sequel looks REAL nice.

Pretty good games this generation, pretty good franchises. I thiught this was easy but its tough when you really start thinking. Id say easily my top two franchises are Uncharted followed by Borderlands.

Then followed by:
Elder Scrolls
Mass Effect

Since im not a fan of doing anything out of top 5 because it just seems like an excuse to add more, it was tough to choose the 5th so im not. It was between Call of Duty, Assasins Creed and Bioshock.

I will say that if Fallout: New Vegas turned out better it would be there..

Uncharted. Even though part 3 wasn't as fun as part 2 it's still a great series. Killzone is awesome. Killzone 2 is one of my favorite games of all time, I just didn't like the dialogue. Bioshock is important. Those are my top 3 franchises this gen.

Franchises? That makes it more difficult.
Uncharted
Mass Effect
Gears of War
God of War (though mostly for III)
Batman Arkham ______
inFamous

But Uncharted really has to pull away as the clear winner for consistent quality in a franchise throughout this entire generation. I'd like to include Fallout, but New Vegas just wasn't up to par with 3. And while I haven't played the BIoshock series, Bioshock brought quality all generation long, too.

Franchises? Geez well each had its own particular entertainment value. In not necessarily in any order, Infamous, Assassins Creed, Mass Effect, Batman et al, Ratchet and Clank, Bioshock, Uncharted (#3 ending needed some work), Resistance, and I wished I could say Mirrors Edge but the sequel most likely is coming out on the next gen. Its a lot, but not one game or series out shone the others unless you want to go down the road of just pure popcorn entertainment, originality , OR something familiar but fresh where possible. Variety is king and this gen for the most part gave me that.

Hopefully next gen console will present as much entertainment.

Keep Playing!

It's really too bad that I read the article AFTER I posted, because Ben already summed up, for the most part, the franchises that have clearly pulled away as the best of the generation.

I know we're a PlayStation site/group, here, but let's not forget how great the Gears of War franchise was, ESPECIALLY for a shooter.

uncharteds, Bioshock's, the first 2 deadspace..man I'm still upset about DS3 and Dark/Demon Soul's.

I would add Mass Effect in there but the gameplay just got dumber and dumber for me with each game. I can't take away from that awesome universe and story though

1) Heavy Rain (Much love!Single game but still)
2) Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 (That greatness)
3) Mass Effect
4) Gears of War
5) Transformers: Cybertron War and Fall
6) Batman: Arkham
7) Saint's Row
8) Demon's/ Dark Souls
9) Prince of Persia (FS was good, but 2008 was absolutely amazing.)
10) Valkyria Chronicles (both PS3 and PSP games are great)

Prince of Persia doesn't get enouch cred, thats for sure. And Forgotten Sand was awesome. It had one of the best end sequences in video games – the part in the sand stprm with the building collapsing. Although scripted it was very original and cool as hell.

Yeah, that ending sequence was so amazing. Fighting through that army of sand guys to try to get to the top of the tower just to have it smashed and have to jump between the platforms and fighting in that awesome sand storm. Great stuff!!!

For me, these are the franchises that I've truly enjoyed playing on this generation.

1) Uncharted (just like Ben said, "it begins and ends with uncharted!" ^_^)
2) assassin's creed series
3) Metal Gear Solid Series (including metal gear rising)
4) God of War Series
5) Resident Evil Series
6) Batman Arkham Series
7) Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch (although it is just a single game, it's simply the best RPG game that I've played on this gen)
8) Infamous Series
9) Grand Theft auto series
10) Final Fantasy Series

im a massive horror whore so i gotta go with F.E.A.R.
the last true horror game, and one of the only games ive ever played that made me sh*t my pants so much i can actually remember so many of the scenes even though i havent played it in months!
condemned 2 was pretty good too, though not as scary.
dead space as well was pretty good, well the first one the second one opened the levels up too much so the panic disappeared.
assassins creed as well, probably the best new IP of the generation!
infamous was good too, the original of course the sequel was a perfect demonstration with whats wrong with sequels this gen.
take a well known beloved franchise, and turn it on its head, make it as completely different as possible.
or RE5 in short.
o, not really a franchise because it only received one game but heavenly sword truly was a masterpiece!
really feel so sorry for ninja theroy, there one of THE best developers out there yet they never get the credit and praise they deserve!
heavenly sword, enslaved, hell even DmC was a pretty awesome game!
enslaved was the best though, such a truly beautiful game and such a beautiful thought provoking ending.
wish more games would end like that!

One of the most powerful moments for me story wise this gen was in Enslaved *spoiler* when Monkey and Trip were at their closest and she offered to take the headband off and he told her not to, like he knew that no matter what they had gone through together , he still wasn't a hero or a nice guy. Very awesome. I agree, no dev is more talented and at the same time lambasted than Ninja Theory. When Sony was showing all that prerendered footage in '05, the only impressive AND real footage at the time was Heavenly Sword. They were the first to really crack the PS3 programming conundrum.

Fallout
Mass Effect
Bioshock
Crysis

It feels a bit weird to put Crysis in there, like it doesn't really belong, but I gotta be honest: Crysis 2 is the best shooter I've played this entire generation and the other two were solid too, and that *must* mean something in a genre as crowded as the FPS genre.

But if we were allowed to put single games on the list, we would HAVE to put one of the two games who really brought something fundamentally new to the table this generation: Heavy Rain and/or LA Noire. I tend to favour LA Noire.

I'm playing Crysis 2 right now and it's pretty good, it's kind of like the Two Worlds II of shooters, wonderful graphics sheen and horrible AI.

But what I'm curious about from your understanding of development is, what am I looking at here? It's very pretty but seems to have a kind of blur filter over everything so it looks very good but doesn't have the crispness of other games like Killzone. I'm seeing some kind of shortcut in the coding to produce this effect.

Temjin001
Temjin001

While the AI isn't the greatest the human enemies aren't exactly bullet sponges either. I've noticed games that have better AI have enemies that usually can absorb a lot more bullets before dieing. SImilarly Crysis 2 eventually introduces Predator-like dudes who are bullet sponges and do run around in a more difficult to shoot manner. They're still not "smart" but they're harder to kill

They all seem pretty spongy to me, don't get me wrong I'm enjoying the game but compared to something like Killzone or even Resistance these enemies are from about the year 2001. They know where I am when I'm 2 football fields away but up close they start jogging at walls and spinning around like tops with no clue I exist.

@World,
I've been wondering about that effect too. I think it in addition to being a visual effect very likely is a (rather clever, imo) way to smooth out the lower resolution image. The lower the resolution the more spare power you get to add other stuff on screen (more enemies, larger maps, more objects, more animations), but the jaggier the image gets. To add blur as an after-effect during processing will soften that image. That is my theory.

I know there are those who don't like that effect but personally I really, really loved the blurriness. I thought it added depth to the image, everything felt more real when your "ingame eye" had to focus at one distance.

I am almost tempted at buying the PC version of the game too, just to see if that blurriness is as prominent there.

WorldEndsWithMe

I like the effect too, except when you are throwing objects. That's what brought TWII to mind, the GRACE engine does the same thing very effectively.

If we're allowed to include MGS4, then that has to take it. And for every other generation in the Playstation's history too; it has consistiently been the greatest example of what makes games great – and different – when compared to movies.

But in terms of franchises that have began on the PS3, I'd struggle between a few: Killzone, LBP, & Uncharted. Okay, that's a damn lie because it's Uncharted all the way, lol, but I have to give mention to the others.

LBP is hardly a franchise; LBP2 tried it's best to be LBP1 + stuff they couldn't fit in last time. But anyway, these set of games are just so insanely unique, quirky and fun. These are some of the few games where you can say they're 100% original. I mean, just think about that name for a while. Where else would you see that name? And just the whole concept…brillliant. And though few people (out of 7 million+ who bought it) managed to really get into the create aspect, it was so perfect. For someone who first saw programming and ran 100 miles in the other direction, this was god send lol. You can do pretty much whatever you want to, but in the language of LBP. Watching people play something you've created is such a fun experiance.

I mention Killzone because I've recently been playing Killzone 2, and it's just awesome. Just epically visceral, and totally engaging. When you're fighting your way across the bridge (about the 5th level in I think) is one of my most memorable moments in gaming. You feel that everything you're doing is affecting the battle – the war – in some way. And against the sky-ravaged backdrop, with the intense colours used, it's just an awesomely visceral experiance.

And then Uncharted. How people don't LOVE these games is beyond me; people who actually don't like it…well…they've got some screws loose lol. I'm not gunna explain why I love it, but I don't think I need to.

I say the Best 5 game series this generation has to be.

1.) Uncharted series

2.) Mass Effect series
(would have been my #1 if it didn't take so for biowere to bring the first mass effect over from the 360)

3.) Dragon Age series
(after a quick read through the comments im surprise no one said this series also by the way what ever happen to Dragon Age 3 is it coming or not ? o.O

4.) Assassins Creed

5.) Prototype Series
(ya im sorry playstation nation i choice the prototype series over infamous because i perfer it im not saying infamous is bad im just saying infamous wasn't my thing.

I tried to fit Prototype on my list! It was definitely number 11. I really enjoyed the first but, Prototype 2 took things to the next level! Radical put a whole lot into what, unfortunately, turned out to be their swan song.
