Ben’s Week In Review: October 7

I think I've got this fall pretty well planned out; I normally don't have to set schedules for myself but autumn usually demands it. …and for once, I think I'm ready. 🙂

Tomb Raider is rapidly rising up my gotta-see list

When Tomb Raider got big, I really didn't care. It just wasn't my thing. I was as happy as could be with all my wonderful RPGs; if I wasn't playing one of the many awesome offerings on the original PlayStation, I was playing everything from Baldurs Gate to Heroes of Might & Magic to Diablo II to Icewindale with buddies. I didn't really branch out until the PS2 generation, but Tomb Raider still didn't do it for me. Besides the main character, I never quite understood the fascination. I played a lot of them, too; I just never finished any because I wouldn't call them "elite." Bear in mind, though, I never played the first few. Now, I'm all sorts of interested in the reboot, which is slated for March.

Just about everything I've seen thus far has really impressed me, and that includes those behind the scenes vids with Camilla Luddington and the guys at Crystal Dynamics, and that news about the developers not bowing to the pressure (which was completely ludicrous in the first place) and keeping everything the same. Besides, you can call this an Uncharted rip-off if you wish but let's face it, Uncharted was the Tomb Raider of this generation. Lara came well before Drake. The only thing Crystal might "rip off" is that level of quality. 😉

The PSN gets two potentially awesome titles in the next few weeks

You should definitely check out the Store this month, because there are quite a few interesting titles headed our way. The top two on my list are Joe Danger 2: The Movie and The Unfinished Swan . Just these two games are proof of the variety and diversity found in the digital world this generation. The PSN is home to the most originality in my opinion, and something like The Unfinished Swan (which reminds me of a Thatgamecompany production) is just so artistically gorgeous. And I was a huge fan of the first Joe Danger so I can't wait to get going on the second. I wonder if I'll be able to handle those "Joe Danger Gaiden" levels…I got pretty good before, but those levels just sound frightening. The developers themselves couldn't finish them all?! …great.

Personal gaming update

I'm pretty much done with Resident Evil 6 . I swear, I've never had so much trouble writing a review. I was just so freakin' conflicted…I'm not sure the analysis even came out right, or if it helped people make purchase decisions (which is usually my #1 goal). But I did the best I could. I've moved on to XCOM: Enemy Unknown and Dishonored , neither of which I can talk about, but it kinda sucks that the embargo is up on both at about the same time (Monday). You'll probably see the XCOM review first just because I got that well before Dishonored . But of course, as always, right in the midst of the busy time, I get the sudden urge to play a classic. I blame Konami for announcing that Castlevania: Symphony of the Night would finally be coming to the European PSN . Believe it or not, I very nearly caved and started a new game… It's just that amazing.

But work comes first. 🙂 By the way, don't forget that I'll be talking to Playboy's Miss October, Pamela Horton, on Monday and if you've got a question for her, throw it into the Comments section of the original story . No, I have no idea how such interviews happen; they all basically come to me. Also, stay tuned for a Q&A with film composer Ryan Shore concerning his music for the upcoming Spy Hunter (Vita and 3DS). Don't know about you, but I love original scores for games.

I was right there for the Tomb Raider explosion. The big thing about it was that it was full 3D exploration in a true 3D world. Fully realized 3D games, whether it be FPS(Quake) or puzzle-adventure(Tomb Raider) were the tech showcase titles representing their respective genres in full polygonal settings. TR was very much modeled after a Prince of Persia(classic) design, but in 3D, with a different Indiana Jones style setting. Mario 64 was among the early pioneers to accomplish this fully 3D transition as well for platformers. Anyway, the original TR game sucked me in about a third of the way in. It had a mezmorizing grasp over me. I really felt the exploration and mystery element behind it's design. It was ground breaking for it's time in my book and I completely undestand it's spotlight time. Unfortunately, the series couldn't keep up from a quality standpoint going forward. I was disappointing with TR2. I bought it day 1, too.

The new game looks interesting, but I have several doubts. I don't know if I want the franchise to shoot for AAA production with the way things are these days. I suppose if it fails, I'll get subsequent games that appeal more to the original series' fans that lays off the drama and Hollywood style set piece dramatizations that frequent big budgeted titles. I'm totally cool with hardcore appeal on this one. I absolutely don't want Uncharted-style platform hand holding in this one either.

PGU: Other than coding like a monkey I've squeezed in a little DOA5 this week. Good stuff. The announcement of ME for PS3 was sort of surprising. ANd now with Cliffy B. leaving the Epic scene, I really have little to no doubt that the core Gears trilogy will come to PS3 as well.

Mario 64 rocked my world. After the side scrolling for so long that 3D world seemed absolutely massive, like an Elder Scrolls game seems today.

Aye, MArio 64 was phenominal. What makes me so amazed by it is that it's design was so DIFFERENT than it's 2D predessors but equally as incredible from a 3D platformer standpoint. I remember just having fun right from the beginning. Just running around outside in front of the castle. Climb up a tree. Do a hand stand. Back flip off. Run down the way and base ball slide off into the castle moat. Go inside in the lobby, slide down the stair rails. The game was just insane for it's time. Back then ANALOG controls were brand new and Mario was the perfect host to help set that interface as a standard.

Absolutely! Mario 64 was just incredible back then. Zelda, Donkey 64, and even Banjo Tooie gave me such an incredible childhood experience as well, in open world feeling. I don't think I've had the same type of experience back then with the Playstation, probably partly because it was when Gran Turismo started taking over. Then again, I don't really know any open world game that's memorable for the PSone.

Holy sh*t that mod looks incredibly, I wish we could play them on consoles. I might have to actually break out Mario 64, I'm all nostalgic now.

I've never finished a Tomb Raider either (I think I've played them all), they were all pretty darn bothersome to play for one reason or another. I was always stumped because I had no idea what I was supposed to do next or having to start over on a big climb where a jump was one inch off or the grappler thingy didn't shoot out. Or the controls just got retarded. I felt Uncharted was what TR always wanted to be, and I hope the new TR can work off that greatness and not be such a pain.

In fact we should have an Uncharted spinoff with Chloe so I have a females back side to look at the whole time instead of Drake 🙂

I have no plans toward JD or US.

PGU: Waiting around for Dishonored while casually poking away at DOA5, Mass Effect 3, Shenmue, and a mod of Zelda 3.

I just finished playing Uncharted 1 and 2 is in progress (Was late to the party!) I knew what to expect but MY GOD! I WAS BLOWN AWAY!

I hope Tomb Raider`s gonna be like Uncharted especially in terms of characters. I fell in love with Drake, Elena, Sully, Chloe, Flynn and heck even Tenzin is freaking lovable!

I just recently bought a plus membership again. I was planning to wait until November because of the inclusion of Vita content, but the spend $100 and get $20 next month kinda persuaded me to go ahead with it now. I was going to buy the The Unfinished Swan, so that will help me reach the $100 mark plus I like the idea of getting it early. I'm really looking forward to playing that game.

I haven't played much of anything as of late. Just putting in a couple of hours here and there with Rainbow Moon.

I really hope that Tomb Raider manages to live up to the hype and doesn't end up coming across as a direct clone of Uncharted in terms of the gameplay. So much has been bandied about in reference to it that I'm really expecting great things, but I'm also quite worried that it just won't live up to everything. I wonder if Crystal Dynamics will reboot Soul Reaver if Tomb Raider doesn't work out. After all that I've heard about it, it's something that I'd love to see.

Personal Update
Been continuing to plug away at Siren: Blood Curse this week when I've had the inclination to play. I dunno, I just really seem to be running out of steam in the amount of interest that I have for gaming. I think it's because I sorta want to start to move on to other fields of interest. I've never been happy stagnating in one area, and I've neglected so many fields of interest in recent times because I've been so wound up in gaming. Not sure if it this disinterest will last long. I don't want it to; I've loved games up to this point :/

I expected to finish Paradise Lost this past week. Didn't miss by much. I'm almost through the last book (I should probably set aside more time for reading from here on out). Probably finish that tomorrow, if not tonight, then I'll start on Paradise Regained. In contrast to all of that, I feel that I'm starting to get back into the groove of writing, but I've been very up-and-down with that this year, having gotten VERY little done compared to what I had expected to.

Starting to feel a bit pensive and reflective about this past year too. I just feel 2013 rushing upon us so quickly that it's almost scary. I know, I'm not talking much about gaming here, but I'm free to deviate, am I not?

WorldEndsWithMe

I find if you just put a week or two between yourself and gaming you'll gravitate right back when something really strikes you then it's BAM.

I haven't done much of the writing I'd hoped too either 🙁 But I'm starting a new series I hope to publish on Amazon so hopefully that turns out well. I just keep getting sidetracked and I'm afraid to touch it because I don't want to ruin the good stuff I've got. Call it creative paranoia.

Lawless SXE

I suppose that's actually a large part of it. I look at the games that are coming out and I'm not really inspired by any of them. It's all starting to seem a bit derivative and boring….

Good luck with the new project. I find that it's almost essential to write every day, even if what you get down is abysmal, the ideas are on paper, rather than being stuck in your head. It allows you to go back later, be it the following day or at the end of the current project, and edit it to get it up to the quality that you ultimately want. I tend to leave anything sit for months before revisiting it and looking upon it with fresher and wiser eyes. Then you aren't wallowing so much in what you're writing and can critique it properly. Of course, I haven't managed to finish anything yet outside of a couple of short stories for a compilation that I've been working on for a rather stupid amount of time, so I may not be the best person to be giving advice 😉

Pretty excited to see the second reboot for Lara Croft. I was pretty into the classic Tomb Raiders, though I started with TR3 (probably the most difficult, lucky me) before playing the others. Loved the puzzles, but the controls often made completing the game even more difficult once you figured out what to do.

Their first reboot on the PS2 after Angel of Darkness was pretty good, adding more elements from Prince of Persia and much more logical puzzles, though the softening in her personality never set well with me. The adding of horror intrigues me the most, hopefully it'll turn her hardcore once again throughout it.

I've never been much into TR, but I hope the reboot comes out great, sells well, and returns the franchise back to it's former glory.

My PGU…
I'm not sure why(and I'm normally not that way)but for the last week or so, I've been in a horribly odd gaming funk and everything I've pulled out of my huge backlog, I soon lost interest in & that they got no more than a quick sampling's worth of playtime, including Singularity, Alpha Protocol, Brink, Enslaved, Uncharted 1, & Bioshock 1(and I even liked Singularity, U1, & B1).

Man, I sure hope I can snap out of this sudden gaming funk, quick, soon, & in a MF'ing hurry.

"So now I'm curious to know anyone else ever wound up in one these gaming funk moods too?"

Anyway, out of about 13 games I originally pulled from my backlog, I finally was able to settle on one & play the whole damned thing through, Aliens vs Predator.
Matter of fact, I've finished it twice so far, once as a Marine & the other as the Predator. I'm now on my third play-through, this time as a Alien.

And I'm already thinking about doing a 4th play-through, just to switch back & forth between Marine, Alien, & Predator after I get through each chapter's game save.

Now, I know AvsP kind of got hit lower score than most games, but hell I'm really having fun with it.
And for me to play most games for more than once which I rarely do(AC series, infamous 1,2,Festival of Blood, & Rage to name off just one hand), I had better have a tremendously good time playing it.

So excited for XCOM:EU. Wasn't sure if you were going to review it originally, but despite already preordering it from Steam a couple of weeks ago, I'm really interested in your review. I always thought putting a turn-based strategy game on consoles was a peculiar choice, so I'm curious to see what console-primary gamers will think of it.

PGU: I finally broke down and bought the Gods and Kings expansion to Civ V about a month back or so, but really hadn't had time to play any until I forced myself to last week. I know what I'll be playing once Tuesday hits, so I wanted to get as much time with Civ as I could before XCOM took over my laptop. So far, I'm liking the expansion WAY better than I did vanilla, but that's not unusual. I'm beginning to close in on a cultural win with Turkey and I just hope I can finish before Tuesday.

PGU: not having gotten Borderlands – the friends I played Borderlands with got it for PC this time – I anxiously was awaiting RE6. Loving every minute of it. Leons campaign has hints of old which should, or atleast could satisfy the fans of old given they give it the opportunity.

Havnt played the other campaigns, and from what I hear one plays like an action game and the other kind of in-between the two. I gotta be honest, I think what Capcom did was brilliant… Had this been another series. I'm as upset that they did this to RE, as the die hard fans are. But that aside it's a freakin' good game! The three campaigns offer up variety, and gripping gameplay! What more could I ask for, I'm literally getting 3 games for the price of one that all tell a big story! I'm judging by what I've played so far but at the rate I'm going, it will take me 10 hours to complete Leons campaign and have heard the other two are just as lengthy. Awesome!

Like I said if this was a different game it probably would be getting more praise rather than negative, unsure responses. I believe that. Because it is good, despite it's lack of identity. Because when it comes down to it, there's a lot more brought to the table than most games accomplish and it does it well. It only suffers it's identity in the fact that it gives you variety. I feel like Leons campaign is exactly what it is. It's a dramatic horror survival episode, with the addition of intense, sometimes spectacular events.

Other than that I bought a turtle beach px21 headset, never thinking I would own a pair because I love my surround sound! Gotta say that is awesome, especially for a game like RE6 where you never know what's around the corner. But I bought them cus they were more affordable than the wireless and Dolby sets. But I loved em so much I actually returned them… Yeah, returned them for the PS3 set, because they are wireless, and have a surround simulator. Can't wait to try them out, everyone seems to really like them, even compared to the true surround sets that run twice as much. If any has any comments regarding head sets let me know, I'd like to hear others experience with any type of headset!

bigrailer,

I really like my Sony headset & it might just be me, but for myself, I have 2 minor complaints about mine….

1. I wish the head-snuggness setting had about 3 more notches of tightness. I guess my skull(or brain matter) must a little narrower than the average.

2. A plastic part rubs somewhere whenever I eat, yawn, talk, or any make other facial expressions or movements.
And although I've been trying to isolate that noisy spot for a year now so I can hopefully tweak or file down the rubspot, I still can't pinpoint it cause I can't ever get it to make that same damned tiny squeak when the headset's just in my hands.

Other than that,I have no regrets, especially when I only paid $70used for it a week after it launched(headset, box, all cables, & instructions were mint).

No negative press from me, I think this is the best re to date. I believe it is better than Re3, my favorite in the series due to nemesis. Glad you are enjoying it bigrailer. Hopefully more people will play it and see that the game is pretty good. There are aspects of survival horror and also lack of ammo on professional. Holy crap I've died so many times due to lack of ammo.

A fight with Chris was pretty great, I won't spoil it. Very reminiscent of the first RE game. Ran out of ammo and I had to end up using the knife for the kill. Glad I had a couple of aid sprays and herbs otherwise I would have to restart the whole campaign over and plan accordingly.

Beamboom,

Well, I'm not sure since my home setup is 5.1 surround, & my Sony headset is 7.1 surround so as a non-techie, I'm not really sure what those differences in numbers makes, or if they make a noticeable difference at all.

My home surround system is a Sony A/V receiver with a 5.1 Bose LifeStyle 10-doublecubed set of adjustable surround speakers(20 speakers in all)& a adjustable subwoofer.

With that said, I'm sure there's no way my surround headset can compete with a 20 speaker home set-up such as mine, but this Sony headset does a pretty damned good surround job on it's own, & I could even hear the directional footsteps coming up behind me from some unseen evil in a Netflix movie I was watching one day on my PS3.

Another plus(for you) would be that it also has "chat" for your co-op games. And you can set it to chat only, 1/2 chat-1/2 surround, or surround only.

Hope that helped.

Beam-

There really is no comparing a true surround system to a head set in my opinion. The surround systems are just capable of more.

But let me say this. I havnt used my Sony set yet, but the Turtle Beach set I had a couple days ago, allowed me to pick up sounds you usually wouldn't because the volume on the surround system is probably lower than what it would normally be to hear such sound. Although the turtle beach set was not surround it still did a good job of bringing in sounds from their locations I.e. Hearing your co-op partner walk behind you; hearing any voices came in from the direction they were; and again hearing things you normally wouldn't like somebody else's gun reloading. Pretty amazing stuff. That's why I went to the Sony' although not true surround they work the PS3 and most of it's offerings much better. And on top of that Sony can and does provide support through them through patches, which wouldn't happen with the other sets.

Also as Biker said: the chat in these headsets is much better than a typical bluetooth. Good stuff.

And thanks Biker for your input. It helps slot!

Beamboom

Yes I am only asking about the actual surround effects, ie if you can hear sound coming from the entire 360 degree circle around you.
Cause since it's only "simulating" the surround I assume there are not a bunch of speakers on each side?

But I think I got the answer, that you indeed do hear directional sound well. Then that's awsome, I want one too!

That is indeed correct. Regardless the lack of true surround, you still get that effect. I dont know how good the true surround sets are, but I certainly don't want to spend the $200+ to find out. Not when it's good enough for me now, and the reviews from Cnet and the user reviews from numerous sites like Cnet, and amazon, etc… all suggest the Sony PS3 set is absolutely worth the price and despite the lack of true surround fair very well
In comparison.

tomb raider looks oh so freaking awesome!
everything just looks so well done with an obsessive amount of attention to detail.
just a shame its so long till it comes out.
i played it a few times over the weekend they had the hunting demo from E3 playable its amazing how detailed and alive the forest feels.
you can hear birds chirping, flying through the trees, elk grazing, bears down at the water fountain taking a drink.
really is quite beautiful!
that is until your forced to fire a bow into one of them, poor elk made me feel so bad.
i really hope they show off another puzzle or dungeon next though.
the first trailer they showed for the game looked so scary, so survival horror esce.
now though it still looks like a survival exploration game but i miss that tense scared feeling you got from the original trailer.
afterall lara is renowned for her puzzle solving skills, so id be a pretty big insult to have only a few puzzles in the game.

just got back from the EB expo, god what a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG three days its been!
recieved media tickets again so i was lucky enough to do interviews with edd boon with injustice, omar kendall with battle royal, josh holmes with halo 4 and last but not least the lead level designer and lead producer of AC3.
got heaps of signed swag too, 2 signed hidden blade replicas and a signed conor statue, a signed chief helmet and a signed scorpion and sub zero statues.
awesome weekend, but very, very tiring!
dunno what was my favorite game there, there was so much!
maybe zombieu just because its been so long since weve had a survival horror game!
either that or far cry three, that was just pure unadulterated FUN!
so disappointed that got delayed it wouldve been the perfect game for the september drought!
now it comes out with all the influx of wiiu titles.
sigh.

I actually finally finished RE5 to the very end. I know it's a bit late. Last night I also just started RE6 and all I can say is after playing the first chapter is, I really enjoyed it. The demo did a fairly good job of showing off the different styles, but the first 30min or so of the actual game is pretty incredible. As far as Tomb Raider, I can't wait for it. So many good games coming soon. Oh and bigrailer19, I actually have both of the headsets your referring to. I think they both are fantastic for the most part. The one thing I didn't like about the SONY headset (And this has since been corrected with a patch on the PS3, I believe) was the fact that you couldn't hear your own voice feedback when you spoke. This would cause me to be talking too loud because I couldn't hear myself. They did fix it though, much better now. Aside from that, the SONY bluetooth are pretty good. Sound may not be perfect from an audiophile point of view, but good sound levels, decent mic, comfort, and wireless! Price is reasonable. Also, the Turtle Beach are very good as well for more money though.

Thanks for the input. I really liked the Turtle Beach set! Going into purchasing some I set a limit because the main reason I wanted them was for chat. Unknowingly the sound is incredible and I enjoyed them a lot. So I read further and the reviews for the PS3 set, really encouraged me they were the pair I was looking for after I knew what I wanted in a pair!

Thanks again! I'm certainly not an audiophile but I'm thinking next generation I may just make the leap and get a real nice set with all the offerings. For now the PS3 set is perfect and they in my opinion are worth more than the retail price.

That's a bummer about RE:6 I can remember my cousin playing RE2 when I was younger. I didn't even appreciate MGS at that age. Since then my opinion as changed if you can't tell. I think a lot of us will always be stuck in the impressions that the early REs left us with.

PGU: Finished watching LotR and onto Deus Ex. This game is even better than my 1st play though. Am trying to get through all the sidequest w/o becoming a hacker, shooting everything, or talking my way through unless i really need to. at this point i might need to upgrade the hacking to L2 to proceed, but who knows, might be able to find some passwords hear and there.
Might get StarCraft II at some point. Resisted the urge to impulse buy it the other day. Bought a bluray 300 instead. Some movies are just that much better in HD and no amount of high speed netflix will compete with a bluray disc!

Still need to finish Portal 2 and FFIX at some point. PSP wouldn't let me play FFIX last I tired. so i need to frig around with that clusterflugen at some point.

Unfinished Swan might warrant a purchase b/f the end of the year. Gotta support the far end of VG art.

27 days till AC3 guys!!

PGU: Just picked up NBA 2K13 the other day (so. much. Jay-Z. :o) and I've been playing as the Nuggets in Association, and I just have to say, the 2K series has got to be one of the most amazing sports video games series ever, the presentation, the smooth animations, the fun realistic gameplay is just out of this world.

Also today I started playing Uncharted 3 (never finished it before so I thought I'd try it again) and man, if you want one game to show off to your friends the power and graphics on the PS3, than that is the game. It is such a beautiful, well made, fun game that I think is reason enough to own a PS3.
