Oh come on, you've played this before: you're on a desert island and you can only have… Remember?

Okay, so let's make two assumptions. First, let's just assume we've never done an article like this before; I'm sure we have, but I'm tired and I think we should have a little relaxing fun after Black Friday. Second, let's assume the desert island has one magical socket plugged into a tree somewhere that grants you everlasting electricity. Oh, and some nice elf gives you an HDTV that will never die.

So you can bring one game. This negates the idea of bringing a backwards compatible console, 'cuz you only get one game to play until you die. What's it gonna be and why? For a long time, I thought I'd go with Super Mario All-Stars , even if that sounds a little like cheating (all the 2D Marios on one cartridge, so it's like four games in one). I just figured I could get the most amount of long-term fun because those games never stop being fun.

But the problem is that as great as those classics are, they just don't have the substance I'll need for the rest of my life. And that being the case, I just need my favorite game of all time, Final Fantasy Tactics . For whatever reason, I can play it forever and it'll never get old or boring. Besides, although I've long since mastered and learned everything, there's just endless experimenting to be done with all those Job classes. There's the longevity; you could spend eons doing that!

So what game is it for you? Remember, only one . ๐Ÿ˜‰

I'd probably go for Skyrim. I dont even like TES games but if i have that much free time i'd finish any other game too quickly.

I'd choose Skyrim, Oblivion with the shivering isles expansion or Fallout 3 with expansions. Those three games all supply tons of gameplay. I had 3 characters in Oblivion each with over 100 hours, one of which with over 250 hours minus the shivering isles expansion and about half the side quests. In Fallout 3 I got in over 100 hours easy, don't recall how much exactly, that's also minus the expansions and a lot of areas left to be unexplored. Skyrim seems like it won't be any less.

This is assuming this island doesn't have Internet. ๐Ÿ˜‰

I'll have what they're having please. I know there are classics, but then there are alternate lives. MGS4 or Peacewalker would have to b my second choice. They just don't stack up timewise. Good ol' Morrowind would be another top choice.

Hmmm, this one's a hard one for me out of all the games I've played so far, but I think it's going to wind up a coin toss between these two

I think I'd have to either with Heavy rain just because replay value of playing for 22 different endings.

Or

GTA4 complete, seeing as I've already put 130+ hours into the regular game & I'm still not done the full story & side quests.
Add the fact that "GTA4 Complete Edition also comes with the Gay Tony & The Lost & the Damned versions included too, so I could foresee playing it for a long, long, time.

I'd go with Fallout 3 since I've sunk obscene amounts of time into a single file, 400 if you are wondering.

Jawknee

Oh my god, that is insane. The most amount of time I have sunk into a single game is probably Ocarina of Time or Twilight Princes over multiple play throughs, with each play though averaging about 50 hours. But even then it would not add up to 400 hours.

Yeah, I guess I enjoyed that game a little too much. I collected and catalogued every single item you could get in one play through, I got the marker for every location (even Vault 87's front door), and a whole bunch more. The file for it is close to 28mb.

im over 400 hours in F3.nv, over 300 in F3… but here i am 2 weeks in to skyrim and nearly at 200 hours, and i havent finished the main quest…. so, if i was to choose a recent ps3 game for that island it would probably be skyrim.

tho… if it was a pc game then hands down it would be minecraft.

Heh.. I like the assumptions. I remember reading the desert island article way back when, but I wasn't commenting then.

Honestly, it's difficult to pick between a working Skyrim and WKCII. Probably the latter though. It has a ton of content, and both of the WKC games, and online capabilities. Perhaps a game that teaches one how to make a good sea-worthy vessel would be a better choice though. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Since I haven't been able to play Skyrim yet, I would have to say Oblivion or Legend of Dragoon.. Two games I can just play and play ๐Ÿ˜› Or you know, even Sonic 3 & Knuckles would do me good for a really long time.

You absolutely should, once the review blitz is at a halt and you have a good 40 hours ๐Ÿ˜› That's usually how long a complete playthrough (Faust, Old Dragoons, and Dragon Ghost battles included) takes me.

I know for a fact that the GT series has gotten the most hours out of my gaming life thus far.

However, I think that for me it'd probably be a coin flip between Legend of Dragoon or Legend of Legaia.

Funny because I just watched the episode of The Office(US version) when Ryan Howard left his food in the microwave and everyone had to evacuate. Then Jim hosted of this very same game outside while waiting for the fire dept to give them the okay to go back in.

If I had to choose I would have to flip a coin between MGS4 and Zelda Sklyward Sword. But I might find myself cheating in order to pick Skyward Sword. It's such an awesome game. My personal game of the year, possibly this generation.

Why? MGS4 is one of the only games I have played over and over and never got bored. Skyward Sword I suspect will be the same way from what I can tell do far.

Certainly was my choice!

But Skyrim seems to be most popular right now, and who can blame the people? It is a huge game, and it's new and shiny!

I was trying to be practical with my LBP2 decision. Skyrim has gotta end somewhere, you know.

Easy choice. Fallout 3 GOTY edition. The game is jam packed with content. One of my favorite games of all time. You could put 100 hrs into the game and still have not done eveything.

bigrailer19

I know I was shooting for quantity, without MP. I know youre not calling any games out in particular but I think that's debatable. I mean I personally feel like Oblivion, and Skyrim both are very quality games. I know a lot of people are complaining about lag in Skyrim but I havnt experienced it yet and probably wont since I'm creating multiple save files to keep multiple options for me and as a plus my file sizes are significantly smaller than those who are complaining. But Oblivion for it's time was amazing and yea the vampire glitch sucks, but luckily for me I love the Redguard race which is immune.. Fallout 3 would be another choice and yea the game had some issues and the expansions were atrocious on the PS3 but I can look past that and give credit to the game which was still amazing.

That doesn't mean I wouldn't choose my personal favorite game Uncharted Drakes Fortune, but if there was Internet I'd pick Uncharted 3 simply for the SP and MP.

So yea I guess for me a lot of it is quantity. But I believe the games I listed are of high quality too.

Duh.

God of War 3 is incredible but you can get everything done 100% in just a few hours. That would be an awful Desert Island Game. The only logical way to pick a game is to go for the longest experience.

It depends. If I had online play it would be Tekken or Virtua Fighter or maybe warcraft 3. If I didn't have online play.. hmm I dunno maybe From Dust. I would feel at one with me setting =p Basically I think I'd opt for a skill building game and not an experience based game. Those can get old, especially while on a desert island with dusty innards.

or…

one of the RPG makers…. so I could make my own games and story lines.

I was thinking Skyrim or Oblivion with the shivering isles expansion because of the amount of content. But that's assuming there's no Internet on this island. ๐Ÿ˜‰

I had multiple playthroughs (3) with different characters in Oblivion, all 3 each having over 100 hours, one of which – my Redguard warrior character – which I had only finished about half the side quests with, had over 250 hours, not including the shivering isles expansion. If I add just the shivering isles expansion it would be close to 300 hours with that character. My PS3 died so to finish up the remiaining side quests, and do all the "bad character" or quests that would result in negative appeal, I created new characters. Only other games that give me that would be a MP game and by the looks of it Skyrim.

Fallout 3 and the expansions might be another choice. I easily had over 100 hours in Fallout 3. I didn't finish everything or explore everything either. Adding the expansions would surely up the amount of gametime as well.

I know the I would not bring not because it on the island and that would be Journey. I not saying it will be a bad game, because I sure it will be awesome. It would be a constant reminder of the torment I am going through.

After giving the question some thought I would probably bring Uncharted 2 because it has a great single player campaign complete with action, suspense, romance, and comical moments. Plus it also has an online mode so I could talk to other people.

Hmm one game I just thought of that I might consider among my list would be Red Dead Redemption. I spent a lot of time with that game not to mention it's one of my personal favorites.

This is a tough choice but I'd definitely pick one of these 5 games.

Oblivion
Uncharted: Drakes Fortune (If there's Internet it would be, Uncharted 3)
Skyrim
Fallout 3
Red Dead Redemption

Dark Souls for me.

A desert island would be the only place that I could invest enough time into it to be any good!

There was an old strategy game that I used to play on the Spectrum 48K called Laser Squad. That would be the grand daddy of a desert island game! I must have sank hundreds of hours into that as a teenager. I even played two player by myself making a story up as I went…

Reminds me of that old Twilight Zone episode when all this guy wanted to do was read, then he went into the bank vault, came out later and everything had been destroyed by a nuclear bomb. He then realised that he could read forever and just as he started he broke his glasses!!!

That would be me. All the time in the world to master Dark Souls and there would be a power cut!

it is Demon's Souls/Dark souls for me, level all the way up to soul level 712/792….Chrono cross, FF8, Final Fantasy Tactics could be second alternative choices.

Sorry, nobody gets marooned on a desert island anymore. The proper modern equivalent question should be:

If you were sent away for life for a crime you didn't commit and you couldn't be bothered digging to freedom, what game would you play on your video game console in your cell to pass the time before lights out and big bubba needed his cuddle?

I'm sure there are a few lifers within the ranks of the PSX community. A big hello to you all…

I'd go for Skyrim as well.
It was the title that immediately popped up in my head. Surprising, because I much prefer futuristic settings to fantasy but there's just no denying the qualities and scale of Skyrim. It's got quantity AND quality, both being important when stuck on a desert island for an unknown period of time.

If there was online connection there's no question though: I'd go for one of the mmorpgs but that's almost cheating I guess, since many already has proven one can live a life through an mmorpg. ๐Ÿ™‚

Like Littlebig Planet 2, an excellent selection.

Anything that has endless numbers of customization options and level / game creation tools is by far the best choice for a desert island game, cos there are no limitations!!

depends.
if said island has a nuclear power station so i could run my PC, then it would have to be the witcher 2.
massive game takes forever to finish, and the combat is so satisfying!
if you could only use a less powered console, then it would have to be ratchet and clank 3 up your arsenal.
has everything!
by far the best story in the series, has heaps of exploration ( was so much fun finding all the sewer crystals), had by far the best weapons the RYNO in that is the best ever created!
i would say skyrim because its such a massive game, will litterally take the rest of time to finish!
but its FAR too buggy, last thing you need on a deserted island is a game that freezes on you every 5 minutes!
and if your save gets over 4MB which it will quickly you cant play it.
oh, and theres no internet on a desert island so theres no downloading patches.
