It was a big week, what with the Tokyo Game Show and all, but I'll keep things simple for the recap. 🙂

I guess Americans hate colors

If you really start to think about it, it's one of the strangest phenomena of the industry: Americans just never get many color options for their gaming hardware. They get a few for their accessories, but that's about it. How come Japan gets everything? A whole bunch of designer colors for the Vita ? Heck, even Europeans get that slick Ceramic White PS3 . And then there are the awesome unique systems that coincide with a big game launch, like that FFXIII-2 Lightning Ver. 2 PS3 . And we're still sitting here, stuck with one damn color for the PS3. I get the feeling we won't see those Vita colors, either.

What's going on? What market research did Sony conduct that found that gamers in the US don't care about such things? Yeah, it's only cosmetic but it'd be nice to have a choice . Hell, if it was something like that Lightning-branded PS3, I might've sprung for it, even though I already had a relatively new Slim. I just wish someone would explain this to me.

Okay, FFX in HD…I can live with that

In my estimation, it was the biggest news of TGS 2011. Sure, we learned more about the Vita and stuff like that, but Final Fantasy X in high-definition just made my week. On the downside, it only solidified my theory that we'll never see a FFVII remake. We're seeing tons of PS2 classics receiving the high-def upgrade this generation, but it just isn't happening with PS1 classics. Look at the new MGS HD Collection; that won't have the original because Konami and Kojima said it would simply be too difficult to do. And I'm sure that's the case with FFVII or any PS1 title. It would have to be a complete remake; not just a visual overhaul.

Still, I loved FFX. It was the last FF that actually looked and played like Final Fantasy (what with the traditional combat setting). I really liked FFXII, too – it was an RPG, after all – but for different reason. And I never minded the linearity of FFX; I liked the story and I really liked the gameplay. It was also a beautiful production; even prettier than other games in the series, like FFVIII and XII. FFX in HD? Yeah, I'll take it.

Personal gaming update

So I'm done with Resistance 3 and I'm nearing the end of Deus Ex: Human Revolution . I've given up on any ideas of finishing Catherine due to the workload that waits just around the corner, but I'm having fun with White Knight Chronicles II . I need to play a lot more before I can write a review, but all I can say to all you RPG fans is- I get it. I think I get why you love the game. But I won't jump to any other conclusions just yet.

Also, expect reviews for Atelier Totori , the RE4 and RE:CV HD installments on the Network, and a couple more games are waiting in the wings: Rage and Dark Souls , both of which launch on October 4. No, I don't have them yet so don't ask. They mark the onslaught that will probably cripple me in October and November, but I'm okay with that. 😉

In other news, we should have a Level-5 Q&A interview for you within the next couple of weeks, and we just finished shooting Episode #6 of the PSXE Show. Due to Hurricane Irene and one episode that popped into Home without me knowing, we've been missing the party in the theater. So we'll definitely party for #6; stay tuned for time and other relevant info.

America Needs a red white and blue PS3. Is there some sort of tax law that makes producing more than one color of an item expensive in this country? I remember buying a kitchen-aid mixer for my mom for Christmas, and that thing had about 5 or 6 colors to choose from. Sony needs to take a lesson from the stand mixer market, and whip up some new colors for us.

Colors aside, I am so far behind this year it's scary. The only game I've bought, used or new, is Dead Space 2. I've played a bunch of PSStore titles, but only one disc based game this year. How sad.

Hey GuernicaReborn,

I couldn't find you a Sony branded "Red, White, & Blue" themed PS3, but I think I found you the next best thing.

Here's a good looking PS3 "USA flag" skin kit…and for only $11.74(plus whatever HongKong's shipping is on it)…..

We in the US definitely need multi colored PS3's, that FF PS3 is a thing of beauty. PGU: I'm getting close to a platinum trophy in Heavy Rain, i also just got MGS1 & MPO off of the playstation store for my psp. For anyone here who has a psp, i would definitely recommend getting both games. Both are $10 each, its a really good deal.

i'm still curious as to what version of FFX they will be revamping. international or standard? i think i'd be happy either way, but i really wanna try the international version

if international then there better be a platinum trophy specifically for beating penance

one thing i wish they would change is make the calculation system for yojimbo a tiny bit easier to use zanmato

America's exclusion from the artsy hardware always confused me too. I would be all over those if they released here, but looks like we'll have to settle with custom decals.

The FFX HD announcement was very surprising, but in a good way. It definitely opens up the possibility of a Kingdom Hearts HD remake *thinks wishfully*.

Personal gaming update: I FINALLY beat Demon's Souls, so now I'm just waiting for The ICO & Shadow of the Colossus Collection.

P.S. I'm very excited to read that Level-5 interview, their decision to bring Ni no Kuni stateside (earlier than expected) was my favorite announcement from TGS.

As I stated previously I am content with just having black. I choose black when I can. Both my vehicles, my phone, my tablet and so on are all black. The think I don't understand is that I see a lot of colored Nintendo DS and wonder why Sony hasn't noticed this. The only thing I can come up with is that it really serves no purpose to Sony to add different colors here. The only purpose it serves is fan service.

PGU:

I finished Ratchet and Clank:TOD tonight and finished the first Gears again this week so now I'm gonna either get back to Fallout:NV or start the God Of War collection. I want to get Gears 3 but I think I'm gonna put it on the back burner for a while. Otherwise the next game I know I am picking up is Battlefield in October.

Ah…yes yes yes…the colors and limited editions of PS3s & PSPs are just unbelievably amazing. I mean heck…IT GIVES YOU PERSONALITY!

I bought a black PSP beginning of 2006…because that's all that was being offered. BUT IN JAPAN…THERE WAS A WHITE ONE! D**N IT WOULD I HAVE LOVED A WHITE ONE!

But…there are "skins" available which let you be able to cover up the color of your PSP…and well…let you have your "personal" PSP. Same thing with PS3. Just how well these "skins" work…I really don't know which is why I plan to try.

For PSP, there are of course faceplates(front & back) you can buy…but god…YOU CAN NOT CHANGE THE BACKPLATE…WITHOUT COMPLETELY DISASSEMBLING your PSP.

Regarding FFX HD. COOL…I'll get it for VITA.

FFXHD is a lock. That was Squaresoft baby. That and DOA5 were my happy spots at TGS.

I'm really having fun with Hunted, and Catherine is pure awesome on every level. I've gotten a tiny bit of play from WKC2 and it is really exciting to be back and with the updated gameplay, it rocks.

I also grabbed Xenogears and Breath of Fire IV. I don't know when I'll have time to play them but a JRPG fan really should own them.

why do i have the feeling that square enix is going to screw up the final fantasy X remake?

Let's not be hasty, if we know anything about Square Enix we know they are lazy. So screwing with the battle system would be work and they probably don't want to do that. I expect just the graphics fixed, but it would also be cool to see the lips more or less synced since they weren't at all originally.

Having spent close to 20hrs on WKCII now I can say it's better than the first one in every way. There is so much to do in the game it's making me giddy. I've spent a lot of hours simply running errands and bounty hunting. If you get bored doing one thing you can just do something else and there is still the vast online portion to tackle.

It's a shame that the I'm loving the gameplay yet see several reviews use it to lower the overall score of the game.

i have spent 24 hours on white knight chronicles 2….. playing wkc1. replaying it, i cant help but feel stupid about how long it took me to figure out who the black knight is. well, it didnt take me that long. i'm starting to notice that there are gigantic hints everywhere, maybe its because i havent sat through a cutscene after my first play through.

my characters seem to take a lot of magic damage too. they take like 1 to 8 damage physical and about 30 to 60 magic damage. i like the wkc2 gameplay in wkc1. i cant wait to get to wkc2.

Underdog15

Completely agree. I just cannot comprehend why reviewers hate it. I remain convinced that most of them have done nothing but watch gameplay trailers or other videos. It's just completely inexplicable. I've never felt that way about reviews before this game's reviews. It's so so strange. It's like it's getting bashed because it isn't some reviewer's preference. I just don't get it.

As for your damage, John, I'm sure you already know this and everything, but I'd thought I would say something anyways in case someone else had the same issue.

Physical damage is limited by vitality and defense. Magic damage is limited by completely different stats: spirit and resistance. You might have amazing defense, but that won't stop magic. Even the attacks are different stats. Strength and attack affect base attack strength (other attacks are affected by agility and dexterity, also). Magic damage is measured by Intelligence and Magic stats.

Again, I'm sure you knew this. Truth is, I just like talking about it. :p

as for ps3 colors, i dont really mind just having my black and chrome ps3. if there were other color choices, thats good too. i actually wanted the gunmetal gray mgs4 ps3 but i'm going to keep my launch 60gb any day.

as for final fantasy x remake, i know i'll get it. probably not day 1 or new because i'm still pissed at square enix. my only problem is that they're only remaking the first half of the story. why not remake x-2 on the same disc? i actually liked x-2.

they said it was hard to remake mgs. my question is why not use their work with mgs4? aside from some cosmetic changes, they can probably use their mgs4 assets into the mgs game. mgs4 gameplay is great, i wouldnt mind it if the other mgs games played like it. of course they'll be changes when needed but that should be fine. maybe its more of kojima's hangup since hes a perfectionist. he probably cant stand to release the first mgs with just an hd remake.

PGU: so far i've been playing dynasty warriors gundam 3 and love it. i borrowed it from gamestop and played it alot but there are still so much to do left in the game that i bought it. Then i bought wkc2 and just got lost in the game. i started from wkc1 and i'm powering through the game. i only had to restart once because i forgot that if kara died as a guest in the party, its game over. i'm also looking for resistance 3 at a cheaper price since i still havent started wkc2 yet. i also havent finished mass effect 2 yet because nothing draws me to play it anymore.

Yea i know right, whats up with those colors. I thought that the PS3 was s'posed to have interchangable lids which is why the old fats have the plastic shell that comes off fairly easy then the metal casing covering the guts. but any who…

No new PGU just 35+ hours into Dead Island. Trying to make the most of it amid those infuriating setbacks where the game didn't save. Few days ago I went from 30% all the way to 58% only to discover the next day that the game hadn't saved. I was upset but I got over it when I found this Godly Sledgehammer, been skullasmashin' ever since 😀

Also, I need some advice on updating my hard drive. I don't need 1T HDD but if thats a better buy than say a 500g or so I'll take it. I'm looking at Highlander for this one, Please and Thanks in advance.

Fane1024
Fane1024

Be warned: the bigger the HDD you install, the more likely it is that you'll run into compatibility problems, due to the firmware being designed for the smaller drives which existed in 2006-2007. Some 500 GB (and larger) drives don't work perfectly.

Myself and at least two other people here occasionally have to reboot our PS3s on start-up because the PS3 randomly decides it can't access the HDD. It usually works the next time, but it's a PITA you don't need.

I'd recommend a drive under 500 GB, if you want to avoid any problems, but Highlander found a model of 500 GB drive that works beautifully. I don't recall the details, but they have been posted here many times.

Mine's a Seagate BTW, which I thought would be good since the original HDD was a Seagate. No such luck.

Main event,
I went with a 640GB Western Digital 2.5 SATA laptop HD in my 60GB Phat princess before the USPS smashed it while in transit to repairs for a blinking red light problem(BTW, those lying motherf*ckers then denied my insurance claim too!!!)

After installing it, I had no issues what-so-ever with my new W.D. 640GB HD either, it worked flawlessly.

Anyway, keep checking Amazon for specials on it(I only paid $79 w/ free shipping too for mine last year) because it might have even come down a bit in price since then.

While you're there also check Amazon for a cheap external HD enclosure just so you can use the HD you're taking take out of the PS3 as a external backup for any PS3 or PC stuff. I had also bought a brushed aluminum HD enclosure w/ the 2 way cable for $7 there when I got my 640 HD drive.

BTW, I'd stay with a HD that has a 5400RPM speed because the 7200 RPM HD's create more heat and if you got any of the older models, especially the 60GB, they already throw out enough damned heat to grill 14 juvenile Brontosaurus patties to well-done perfection in 4 1/2 minutes.

Coloured consoles… a Western fable, nothing more, which is really sad. Then again, I find that electronics simply look best in monochromatic colours as rainbows don't work well in loungerooms. Am I a little bonkers for thinking that?

FFXHD is just an excuse for me to never play the PS2 version that I bought, which is sad. I just wonder whether it'll be a disc based release. I think not, but I still think that they should also spruce up X-2 while they're at it. Make a lot more sense and maybe it'll help them to remember what FF was.

PU:
Finished R3 earlier in the week and started playing GT5 again, then decided against doing that and instead began the Bad Company games. I've almost finished the original and I can tell you right now that they won't be staying in my collection and I've similarly lost the enthusiasm I had for BF3. Too bad, because I was looking forward to it.
I'll also be finished Mansfield Park later tonight and starting on Cormac McCarthy's The Road. In the meantime, my PSP has gone back to collecting dust, which saddens me, but I intend to get back to it sometime or other.
Peace.

P.S. Ben, good to hear that the L-5 Q&A is coming, but any idea on when the S-E answers come back. I'm just really interested in those, given some of the questions that were asked in the comments section of that article.

FFX has got to be the best thing at TGS that's for sure, never saw it coming and glad it did, now I'm hoping that eventually it will turn into FF Collection with FFX-2 and FFXII in it as well.
I'm sure we can forget about games from the 6th generation getting an HD remake, the tech difference is too much between now and then and if they're gonna remake a FFVII, it'll be the same as making a whole new game and HD world map is simply impossible but I'd like to see it happening.

Psst….Ben, there is a secret to WKC – it is gamer crack once you go online with quests and start trying to collect everything you need to make the more powerful armors, and of course reach the levels that let you do it. WKC2 and @KC are so chock full of obsessive compulsive collector disorder triggers that they might merit a psychology thesis worthy of a PHd.

PGU:
Resistance 3: My main coop buddy and I are at the final stage to beating R3 in coop. It's a good shooter – the best ps3 exclusive so far in my opinion – but it has made me look forward to Bioshock Infinite even more.

Dead Island: We have only played it a couple of sessions in 2 player coop but it left us unimpressed. The bugs are one thing, worse is it that we found it to be neither fun nor challenging. To mention this game in the same sentence as Fallout and Far Cry is blasphemy.
We are three that will give it another go this evening. Hopefully we will find it a tad more enjoyable being three (coop usually makes a mediocre game much better), but I think I can safely conclude that zombies just isn't for me.

So, thank god for Deus Ex: Human Revolution! That's the game I return to. That's the game I want to play.
And judging from the tempo I progress in that game (or rather, the lack thereof… The explorer in me hinders me 😀 ) I can safely expect to be entertained by that game for many, many weeks ahead.
Human Revolution is *the* game of autumn 2011.

Oh I think of them as entirely different games! My personal opinion is that R3 is too much of "a regular shooter" – a good shooter, but still just a shooter. It had the promise of a good story but became too occupied with being a shooter. I missed a coherent focus on the story, that's why it made me look forward to Bioshock.

I take for granted that Infinite will deliver on that department. Bioshock simply is at a higher level. It's more than a shooter.
