Okay, so you've explained why Alan Wake was exclusive to the Xbox 360 , and we accept that explanation. Microsoft came to you with the best deal and besides, it's always easier to focus on any one console.

However, if you do create Alan Wake 2 and if for some strange reason your exclusivity deal with MS went bye-bye, I'm telling you that such a project would go over quite well with the PlayStation 3 audience. Although Heavy Rain is a different experience in terms of gameplay, both your game and Quantic Dream's emphasized a strong story narrative and character development. As far as I can tell, the same sort of people who enjoyed one game would enjoy the other. But here's the difference: while Heavy Rain was expected to only sell a few hundred thousand copies and ended up selling over 1.5 million, your game… The numbers weren't exactly encouraging, now were they?

Well, it wasn't a huge flop but let's face up to facts: Alan Wake didn't sell anywhere near as well as it should've. But with all this great word-of-mouth generated by critics and die-hard fans of your stellar achievement, there's every indication that a sequel would sell better, and I can almost guarantee the PS3 fans would take notice. Maybe it's because the average age of a PS3 owner is a little higher. Or maybe it's because the innovative risks Sony has taken in the past three decades have been received well by gamers. Whatever the reason, it seems apparent that Alan Wake 2 would be welcomed by the PS3 crowd.

Of course, if the game remains exclusive to the 360, I will certainly still buy it on day one. And I'm hoping others will reward your efforts as well. But as you said, it was a "business risk" to cut out all the possible consumers…maybe it's best to eliminate that risk and give nearly twice as many gamers a chance to play your new in-depth adventure. Just a thought.

Once upon I was considering a 360 for this game and Mass Effect. Then I got a decent computer.

It really needs to come over, I still really want to play it. I'm really love Twin Peaks, and a game even with a shade of that I want to play.

Wasn't Twin Peaks like a murder mystery show or something?

Twin Peaks was special. it was more than a murder mystery, funnier than any commedy, disturbing, illuminating and just plain weirder than anything else around. I loved it. I used to have the entire collection on VHS, until I moved continent and then they stayed with my best friend.

Have to agree with TheHighlander. Twin Peaks was special, if short lived. Its influence can be seen in a number of TV shows and movies today.

I kind of hope it stays exclusive. I bought a 360 just for this game. If this and Gears of War came to the ps3, well lets just say I can live without Halo.

I'm with you there man I hope it stays exclusive also there are hardly any exclusives out for the 360 this year . Microsoft is waiting for the middle of the year (E3 2011) to announce they're exclusive games all of which may or may not come out next year except for Forza 4 and Gears and that's just lame. I'm sort pissed about that I would like to get more playing time with 360 than just one as of lately.

The Rememdy team sort of strikes me as a smaller scale dev who wants to keep costs low. Even though it's retail copies clocked in around 1 million it did manage to get bundled in with the 360 and it has a reasonable asking price on MS's "games on demand" service. So while they probably would've been safe to make the game on PS3, it would seem Remedy has been profitable enough to have a sequel green lighted. That, and it keeps an ace in MS's sleeve to attract a portion of Sony's audience who may be tempted to come over and "Jump In"
I, for one, can't play Alan Wake because it creeps me out.

Sequels don't necessarily come from games that sell well, NT is still mulling over a Enslaved sequel. I think MS might want one from Remedy just because they have like no exclusives and need something to talk about.

I'd imagine it has more to do with whether, or not, a game is profitable. I'd hope, anyway. Who'd be crazy enough to continue and release games to drive themselves into bankruptcy?

So World, it would seem I skimmed somewhere that you are doing reviews, or something, at that Titan Reviews site? If so, cool =)

This is true, we be a tiny leetle upstart but with my massive powers of writing I've already hit in the top 5 and number one spot in popularity on N4G. 25,000+ visitors this month so ad space is coming. We still need writers though in case you would be interested in doing news lemme know.

hey man, I'd love that. i don't need to get paid, or nothing, if it means helping you guys get on the map. I could do game reviews, or something. I have a 2yr AA college degree and I've taken two college level writing classes.

I went ahead and just submitted to the TitanReview "jobs" link. My email is in there =). I don't want to post my personal email on this board where I'm sure those ad spammers might snag it 😉
I would just give it to you through PSN (username is the same as my PSXe name) but right now all of my home is packed up as I'm moving tomorrow. Hopefully, I can get my internet up and running over there as soon as possible. So I'll probably be out of the loop for a few days or more until I get an ISP at that location.
Thanks, World

Well, we won't get Alan Wake anything on PS3 but I'll be sure to play it when I can buy a 360 for what its actually worth. I still wanna play Lost Odyssey at some point.

Also, btw, I gotta thank Ben for that, and both of you for recommending Suikoden. I'm about 10 hours in on Suikoden and I'm loving how I'm forming this huge liberation group. It's good stuff.

No prob Temjin, stick with the series because you'll build that team and a wicked headquarters in every game iteration. I still think Suiko 5 has the best stuff, but 3 is nothing to sneeze at.

He actually annoyed me a little! But I LOVED the memories you collected. Some of them moved me to tears.

BTW, Suikoden is AWESOME, but for the best in PS1 RPGing outside of Final Fantasy, it's hard to top Xenogears.

Ben Dutka PSXE

Suikoden is my 2nd favorite RPG series behind FF. And I've probably replayed the original Suikoden a dozen times…I always have to get all 108 Stars of Destiny.

Temjin, the Shahazarade (sp?) part near the end is the CUT-OFF POINT. If you do that battle and you don't have everyone you can possibly get to that point, you're screwed. Fair warning.

TheAgingHipster, Xenogears is up next for me in my PSP play cue, possibly Vagrant Story. I'll see how I feel when I'm done with Suikoden.

Thanks for the heads up, Ben =)

Oh yeah, I know. I actually have the game myself. They both have very different personalities. For example, I didn't find Wake to be instantly likable as Drake was or is. The comparisons between them are superficial.

True that if the deal ever went off they should make it multiplatform.

You know, I still haven't played this game. I sold my 360 after I got my PS3, because surely no 360 exclusives would ever tempt me enough to justify retaining an inferior piece of hardware!

…lesson learned.

I've talked to a bunch of 360 owners and they don't even care about Alan Wake 2.
I've not played it so idk if i like it or not, but the general feeling i got from people was that its a mediocre game that doesnt really deserve a sequel.

I'm honestly not trying to be rude and am not looking for snide remarks, but can someone explain what was so great about Alan Wake in the first place.

I loved Heavy Rain, but from all the alan wake vids I watched, I definitely would not compare the two. I just don't see it.

I know Ben liked it, so what was it?

TheAgingHipster
TheAgingHipster

At the risk of sounding stupid (since I haven't played it and all), my friends tell me that the episodic nature of the game lent itself to that sort of campy horror/thriller TV show feel. One of them likened it to the unholy offspring of Twin Peaks, Silent Hill, and The Shining.

Ben Dutka PSXE
Ben Dutka PSXE

Well, it had fantastic writing, first of all. Some of the best of the generation by a long shot.

And yeah, I really liked the TV/episodic thing; after every chapter, it recapped what happened in a "last time, on Alan Wake" theme.

The gameplay could get a little repetitive, certainly, but it was the dark, freaky atmosphere and story that matters most.

kraygen
kraygen

Good writing I love, but campy, meh. Repetitive gameplay, no thank you, especially from what I saw in the video's.

How long was the campaign? I don't own a 360, but I just don't think this sounds like my kind of game.

Ben Dutka PSXE
Ben Dutka PSXE

Sounds to me like you're hell-bent on not liking it, so it doesn't matter what I say. 😉

But for the record, there's nothing "campy" about it and the campaign, if I'm remembering correctly, is around 10 hours. And there is no multiplayer, so it's all about the story.

TheAgingHipster
TheAgingHipster

Campy or not, I want to play it!!

kraygen
kraygen

hmmm, well someone else said campy and Ben is saying it's not campy, so I must shrug.

If the campaign is 10 hours, does it have multiple ending or routes to the end? You know short games are one of my pet peeves.

It's just all the vids for this game show him running with a flash light, is there any actual combat? I'm just wondering what the actual gameplay is like.

Horror isn't really my thing so if it's just supposed to be scary then you're right I probably wouldn't like it. If someone ever said here play this though I'd give it a chance.
