It's so nice to leave the annoying hot weather behind, isn't it? Bring on the freezing temps!

Yes, do Mirror's Edge 2. Soon.

So EA says they haven't abandoned the name, which means I can hold out hope for a sequel. The first is still one of my favorite games of the generation; it had its flaws, but it was crazy fun and one could easily notice the future potential. DICE handled the unique, first-person viewpoint and corresponding physics very well, and I've never had a problem with trial-and-error gameplay. If you really think about it, the challenges facing the designers were almost countless, and they came through in fine fashion. Plus, just imagine what they could do with the follow-up… They could refine and tweak, they could tighten up the disarming mechanic (which I found to be loose and unreliable), and they could add more detail and richness to the environment. Me, I was a big fan of the sense of movement and height in that game and ever since I finished it, I've wanted to go back through it.

I know Mirror's Edge has its fair share of detractors but I don't care. That game was super fun. And while I'm aware that DICE is kinda busy right now, I'm holding out hope for Mirror's Edge 2 . Who else wants it?

Black Ops will sell 18 million…? Well, fine.

One analyst believes Activision will rake in $818 million thanks to 18 million copies sold in the fourth quarter alone. And of course, a new Call of Duty will drop next year. If I had to guess, I'd say it'll hit on November 9 for the third year in a row; doesn't EA's Madden launch on the same August date every year? I suppose this is what we have to expect from the mega-franchises and because both are usually top-quality (despite my aversion to multiplayer in regards to CoD), I'm not too freaked out. We still reward greatness, for the most part. We could all bemoan the fact that something as revolutionary and progressive as Heavy Rain only sold 1.5 million, and in comparison to the mindless CoD, the situation is depressing. But we can also be optimistic; HR wasn't expected to sell anywhere close to 1.5 million, so aren't we headed in the right direction?

Activision is good at marketing their stuff. Plain and simple. They've taken advantage of the CoD name and pushed it through the effing roof. We could whine about it all day long…the only way to counter it is to keep rewarding great efforts by great developers.

Personal gaming update

I got Fable III today but I honestly have no idea when I'll get a chance to start it. The reviews keep piling up and November won't be much easier than October. The sheer number of mediocre titles I've had to look at in the past two weeks is…well, let's just say it wasn't much fun. Thankfully, Hoard is a fun little PSN title and James Bond 007: Blood Stone was entertaining. It isn't as good as I had hoped but at least I had some fun with it. This week, it's all about Black Ops , of course, and then we've got Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood and Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit . Also this week, if you care, I'll be doing reviews for Power Gig: Rise of the Six String and that other new PSN game, Superstars V8 .

Other than work, I haven't had time to breathe. So there's nothing else going on. I still read, though (it doesn't require that I leave my place), and I've recently completed Forster's "Howard's End" (and a few short stories), and I'm working on "The Count of Monte Cristo" by Dumas.

I never tried Mirrors Edge, the First Person View seemed weird so I just kinda wrote it off. I didn't know you thought so highly of it. I guess I'll check for a demo or something…

I just put a preorder in for Dead Space 2 and I got Dead Rising 2, which I've been playing here and there for past few days.

Most of the time lately has been spent working on my car, so I haven't been visiting here as much as I usually do. I always come back, though.

HEY don't forget to the folks for whom it is not yet midnight. Amazon's buy 2 get 1 free ends today.

Okay, got that out of the way. I was thinking of trying Mirrors Edge but the fact that you just mentioned it has a lot of try then fail gameplay I guess I'll just forget it. That went out with 16 bit.

Just gotta let CoD be CoD I guess. Though putting it up against the better technical achievements of this generation and still calling it great is a stretch. But then, they gave Avatar 4 stars so…

I'm all mixed up in New Vegas, Alpha Protocol, and I bought a working copy of Devil May Cry 4. I thought I was getting the Limited Edition of DMC4, cuz that's what it is, but there's no DVD with it. At least I got the cool box though.

Yeah, Mirror's Edge was a fun, unique and genuinely interesting idea, but it didn't gel with me in the way that I'd hoped it would. I still thought it was a good game, but it felt as though it was lacking something. I think that if DICE does have a second crack at it, we could get something magnificent. I'd really like to see bigger environments with more paths through them, a reworking of the combat, and a better implementation of the controls. I mean, that's essentially the point of a sequel, but I think it would be necessary here.

Speaking of Mirror's Edge, I would love to see a game based on very similar mechanics in third person. The first person view was novel, but it really limited the amount that you could see. Although I was surprised that you were able to see more of Faith than just her hands… I liked that.

I don't really see Black Ops selling that amount, at least, not within the quarter. Lifetime sales, yeah, no fear, but not upfront. Marketing will definitely influence the sales figures as many will snap it up seeing that it is the most popular game available. "We live in a democracy, and so most popular is the SAME as best!" (What's that a quote of?)

I think that the intellectual games appeal to a far more niche market, as games are generally considered competitive not thought-inducing. But then, Bioshock sold fairly well and the twist in that was enough to make me re-evaluate reality for a short time. I suppose it all comes down to the individual game and the way people look at it.

Personal Update:
Well, I finished the Ballad of Gay Tony yesterday, which wraps up my current playthrough of the GTA IV compilation. I'll do it again some time in the future, maybe just before the next title comes out. And I must say that I enjoyed the Episodes far more than I did the main game. I've since started a new game of Bioshock on Hard, and am hoping that I can get through both of them before GT5 comes out. I'm also still having no luck passing April in VC2, which is really starting to grate on my nerves.
I finished Possession by A.S. Byatt on Monday, and I can't deny that it was a well written novel, but I've never been a fan of the mystery/detective/thriller genre, and it does largely fall into that. So, I enjoye the story, but not the execution. I also finished The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald on Friday night, and enjoyed it a great deal more. Gatsby is such an odd character that you really want to find out his history, and you do. And then the ending is very touching. So now, I've started reading Catch-22 by Joseph Heller and am not really far enough into it to form an opinion.
That's… about all.
Peace.

Mirror's Edge was definitely an example of how devs who insist on using a first-person perspective should be implementing it (i.e., they did a great job of making it feel real, rather than the usual sense of being a Dalek), but I still don't think "platforming" is ever going to work right in first-person. Not in Half-Life and not in Mirror's Edge.

But if people enjoy it, who am I to say they shouldn't? 😉

p.s. As I said previously, I loved Possession.

I'd like Mirror's Edge 2 to be more platforming. The first was fun but it felt like they ran out of ideas half way through and just handed you a gun so you wouldnt have to be all slidey-jumpy.

Black Ops will sell a ton, no matter what it deserves. Ads sell everything. Thats how Nickelback makes millions with their terrible music while talented and innovative musicians have to struggle just to pay their bills. The great thing is that those indie musicians wouldn't trade it for the world. They would rather make great music and be poor than churn out generic crap and be filthy rich.

I want to play Fable 3 too, but i'm waiting for the pc version. I hope they announce a date for that soon.

I didn't ever get into Mirror's Edge. I played the demo. It was pretty cool. I dunno, I just never got into it lol. Maybe at some point I'll give it a go.

CoD, 18million? Good for them. I don't think comparing HR and CoD really works because they're different products with different markets. CoD fits snugly into the competitive online category. It's a sub-culture of gamer that is cultivated by a different means than something like HR.
But even then, it'd still be nice to see a larger populace of gamer that embraces the unique. Something at least 18million strong.

Gaming update:
After beating LoS and doing up my user-review I've snuggled back into playing T6 online. I don't know if my skillz have weakened or if the noobies and lesser dedicated have moved on, but the average fight now is a lot more challenging. I haven't picked up on T6 like I've had on T5:DR, but I must rise to the challenge! rawrr!! =p

I snagged Chessmaster for the PSP for only $9.99. I've been pining for a great chess game on a handheld, and now I've found it. It's not too great visually, but it's really good and hardcore. I'm pretty certain that it'll make a better chess player out of me.

I had to rip myself away from ME2 to play LoS when I started LoS. I knew I couldn't sustain both so I stuck only to LoS until it was finished. Now, I look forward to going back to ME2. My early impressions are high. The game really compels me in a way that I'm not usually engaged by concerning video-games. And I do dig the very stylish sci-fi vibe.

FYI: I've just read some great rumors about the PS3 edition of MASS EFFECT 2 which is said to contain a 6 hour mission, and an interactive comic sequence that details the first ME which also allows you to make decisions. awesome.

I really enjoyed ME2, Sensei Temjin. And because the ps3 version will be coming with all the previous DLC, and will be including an extra 6 hour mission, and the prelude, all in one slamming bluray (here's hoping to less grainy CGI cutscenes) i'll be getting the ps3 version fo sho, unless the port has some serious issues. Frankly, I am expecting some problems only because good Unreal-based ports like Arkham Asylum are the exception, not the rule, and Bioware doesn't have much experience that i know of, with the ps3.

I was super-impressed by DarkSiders. I'm sure i wouldn't have ranted so much about LoS if i had played Darksiders first, only because it had a similar goal, but did it first. In a genre with no shortage of well established franchises and brand name recognition, both Vigil Games and Mercury Steam sought to make the best out of things, so to speak, by using the brandname recognition of others to a nostalgic effect, and even improving them. If you can't beat them, "combine" them.

I'd say Darksiders had stronger gameplay (more elaborate and cohesive puzzles and exploration partly due to free-roam camera), while LoS was the more beautiful one. That is not to underrate LoS, either,( and Darksiders does have moments of visual splendor, too), as i'm playing it again, to platinum it, and it is even more enjoyable than before. Very few games have that effect on me.

Temjin001
Temjin001

I'm glad you really liked Darksiders. I was reluctant to have played it in the first place. Initially, I tried the demo and didn't think much of the game and wrote it off as filler. But while at my job, a co-worker there wouldn't stop talking to me about how much he liked it and he persisted at insisting that I should play the game. He offered to let me borrow it. I knew the game meant a lot to him and, despite my reservations, I decided to go ahead and accept the offer, at least to give it a try. It took a few hours in to wade past my pre-conceived notions I held reserved for it, but then I started warming up to it. Before long I began to like it a lot. And in hindsight, I'd say it's one of the better titles I've played this year, including even, this gen. I'm still heavily biased towards NG. But Darksiders has more adventure in it than a NG. At the core the format of this game is adventure, not too dissimilar from a Zelda game. While a lot of the game feels heavily inspired by many other popular games (NG/GoW, Portal, Zelda) it brings them together in a well designed medley of gaming entertainment that tweaks and mixes up enough things to keep it out from under the rip-off label. It offers the sort of gaming experience fans of these types really enjoy.

I think my favorite boss fight was the final confrontation against the angel-chick (i forget her name) It was NG grade awesomeness.

I had almost forgotten I still have FFIX to finish as well.
I prolly won't get back to it until after the holidays since I just started RDR undead nightmare over (only because I'm hoping a new file will fix the huge freezing glitch preventing me from ever entering mexico which is major BS), just got my first trade for my player in 2k11, I'm assuming GT5 will appear sometime between now and the apocalypse… and I'm kinda getting back into Rock band now that there's another true sequel.
This news about a ME ps3 version is almost making me regret beating the PC version quite a while ago, but then I got a russian version for next to nothing on ebay so maybe I'll pick it up again once it gets cheap… again.

The only thing I want to comment on is Mirrors Edge 2…EA/DICE get the bloody finger out will yis and get this game done! The first Mirrors Edge was just too cool for school. I could easily spend a whole day running through the campaign and then another couple of hours just trying to speed run it. Such a fantastic title. Not without it's glitches, a couple of freezes that required a system restart and unluckily for me at least, usually just after a part I'd spend hours trying to nail.
*Waves clenched fist at scaffolding level!!!*
But I don't care, that game is just so awesome 98% of the time.
Mirrors Edge 2 will be my most anticipated game and I really want to see it happen soon.

Let's just hope Dice doesn't try to make it work for the Kinect. I can see the lawsuits now for broken ankles and TV's.

I tried the Kinect at Best BUy yesterday, btw. It was sort of fun. Very simple raft river racing game. And I sort of hurt my ankle when I jumped….. I was in nicer dress shoes, and no I wouldn't be recognized as a fatso. ANd to pick it apart, it was noticeably laggy, and I honestly can't see how many games MS can for do for it with a camera alone. I dunno, but it won't be getting my money. Nor my friends money, who just had his second Xbox 360 RRoD. Another one bites the dust ooooh!

Ben did you play the dlc for mirrors edge? i loved mirrors edge and thought it was great. i will replay it one day i still have it. i preordered it and got that yellow bag with it actually. that thing is great big enough to carry my ps3 in.

personal gameing update: i spent most the week playing ff13. it does pick up and the story starts moving along. it is a good game in its own right but i have to agree with everyone. just not quite ff of the past. i have to ask, what is with the transformer summons?!? seriously? so gay. anyway i will try to finish it more than likely as i dont really want to leave it hanging. it is pretty though. i have more thoughts on the game but i wont beat a dead horse everyone knows at this point.

i have gotten a couple people i know to sign up for gamefly through this link i have. it gets you a free month with subscription to a month. $16 for 2 months is a good deal. if anyone wants it let me know.

gonna go play some just cause 2 til i get bored with it and send it back and split second. that game is a lot of fun.

Hey Ben, since you touched on the subject of the massive amount of reviews you have to do, I was wondering if you will do a proper review of the ICO/Shadow of the Collosus Collection when it comes out next year.

Mirrors Edge… The most stylish game yet on the PS3 imo. Now that game had something very "new" all over it, not just "better gfx, better snd" etc, quite the opposite actually. The clean visual style was a pure designer masterpiece.

Not that I've finished it, not even close. Hardly past the tutorial level. Trial&error is definitely nothing for me when that means jumping towards the same darn pipeline fifty times just to find out I was supposed to jump the exact opposite direction.

But I still own it. And it's one of the few games I really enjoy watching *others* play.

i really wish EA would do a mirrors edge sequel, the first had so much potential with a little refinement it could really be a fantastic game!
they need to open it up though, 99% of the levels had you running straight past your enemies.
well if your going to run in front of 20 enemies, each shooting you i dont think it takes a rocket scientist to figure out your chances of surviving are not exactly too crash hot!
they need to open up the environments so you can go around, above, behind and below enemies, instead of having to run in front of them making dodging bullets impossible!

johnld
johnld

you can jump over walls and stuff to avoid them. you can even run around and then disarm them. of course attacking head on wont get you anywhere in most games.

___________
___________

allot of the levels you cant do that, they force you to run right past all the enemies.
cant remember exactly what level it was, but you were in a car park with parked cars on the left and right so all you could go was the center.
so you run down the center of the room than enemies pop out from the cars using them as cover and shoot you.
all you can do is run and hopefully you can run fast enough to get past them.
another one where your running down the stair case, you cant leap over the edge because then you fall to your death, again all you can do is run your a$$ off and hope its fast enough.
cant stop to disarm any of the enemies either because than during disarm all the enemies are shooting you so by the time your done faith drops to the ground.

i bought and played mirrors edge but just didnt like it. it just didnt sit well with me. although i was interested when i played the demo. i returned it after i beat it. picked up operation flashpoint right after. that game sucked big time. i played it a few levels and returned it right away.

I'll eventually pick up black ops later, just not day 1. i trust treyarch with their single player campaign, not like infinity ward. if treyarch did single player and infinity ward coordinate to make one game like dice and danger close did, that will be a good game. maybe infinity ward can release a game with a lot less bugs and less broken. The only deal breaker for me with black ops is if it doesnt have modern weapons. i have world at war but i really dont like older settings like ww2.

Personal Gaming Update:
I just platinumed naruto ultimate ninja storm 2 a few minutes ago, without boosting. everything was great until i needed to win 50 online ranked matches. it further fuels my arguement about fighting games do not belong online. almost every game i played were retarded. i ran into turbo controllers, lag even though connection says full bars, throw spamming, same damn enemy characters, those that just run away, it was just a pain in the butt. In my opinion, there shouldnt be trophies that says you need to win X amount of online ranked matches let alone 50, especially fighting games. they should leave it as play X amount of games. after playing online alot, heres what i learned, 1 people in asia almost always use sage naruto, 2 most people in europe have turbo controllers ( i played against a lot of them and it is very noticable), 3. people in the US spam throws, 4 ranked matches are stupid because people just spam the same moves over and over.

Just got a message on my ps3 from sony inviting me to the killzone 3 beta so i'll be playing the hell out of that. Then, i still got vanquish still wrapped and ready to go after killzone 3. and thanks to targets buy 2 get 1 free sale, i got money for black ops now. I bought naruto ultimate ninja storm 2, vanquish, and a copy of medal of honor (i already bought it). got the MOH from target and returned it to best buy for 60 bucks. sometimes you just gotta make your own deals.

Never really like the first person aspect of mirrors edge its kind of a turn off in my opinion plus i didn't really like the demo so it doesn't bother me if they make a second one but i have friends that truly loved the game so for their sakes i hope they make a second one

Moving on to Fable 3 well it was a disappointment in my opinion. While it did improve lots it did change stuff that didnt need to be changed for example no more xp and no more health bar. Which wse one of the biggest let downs and they got rid of the expression bar and now you have to go do little errands to get people to fall in love with you. One thing i thought was gona be cool is that they made the main charecter speak but for the most part it seems to me like its the same exact as in the last game. The only time you'll really hear him talk are various times in the story the only really good impovement really is the story

Heavy Rain was brillant, but a game like that doesn't garner COD type attention due to the fact Sony never advertises it games. GOWIII and UC2 got the most advertisments if I recall, but they don't compare to Microsoft's advertising. There's a reason Xbox sales more games than PS3. I can easily say this is due to parents buyings kids who own Xbox's everything and PS3 has a more adults who don't have time to play everything, but then again…advertising goes a long way and when you have every blockbuster hit being advertised as an Xbox game (FF, RDR, etc)…then you have a problem Sony. Who ever does their marketing needs to get Kevin to start promoting games and stop focusing on just the hardware (console, move, etc). Heavy Rain didn't do bad at all and compared to trash openings for Castlevania LOS, etc… Heavy Rain did quite well. Never played Mirror's Edge…just doesn't look appealing.

Thank the lord someone else loves Mirrors Edge as much as I do.
Definitely one of my favorite games ever.
I love it because it's simplistic and relaxing a huge change from all the action oriented games that flood the gaming world today.
Honestly Mirrors Edge 2 is my most anticipated game yet, well apart from Portal 2.
