We've seen plenty of gems on the PlayStation Network but with so many available these days, what should top your list if you're a new PSN subscriber? Or maybe you just need to catch up…either way, there are five fantastic downloadable titles that everyone absolutely must try.

Wipeout HD

It's arguably still the best downloadable game out there; it's definitely a full racing title in brilliant high-definition; it debuted at $19.99 on the PSN but it was worth every cent. With blindingly fast – yet always silky smooth – gameplay, a stiff challenge (that has since been lessened thanks to a patch), and plenty of diverse challenges designed to test your reflexes and overall skill, it's a must. Even if you're not a big racing fan, you still gotta try this very rewarding and impressive experience. Oh, and the multiplayer is pretty damn good, too.

Flower

The second offering from thatgamecompany (TGC), Flower is still something you have to see to believe. It's not so much about mind-bending visuals – it's pretty, but it's not the prettiest piece of DLC out there – and it's not about innovative control (we've used the Sixaxis in that fashion before). No, it's the concept. It's the very idea of controlling or even being the wind and guiding an increasing stream of flower petals in an effort to restore and rejuvenate extremely pleasant natural landscapes. It's just so relaxing . Bring on Journey , guys!

Joe Danger

If saying that it's Excitebike for a new generation isn't doing it for you, perhaps the most fitting praise for Joe Danger is this: it's just ridiculously fun and ridiculously addictive. Why? Well, there really isn't anything wrong with it. The controls are nearly perfect, the level design is excellent, the satisfaction factor is crazy high, and the pervading atmosphere of colorful amusement will make you grin. The basic description of the game – some retired cartoon-y Evel Knievel jumps and flips down a course and picks up stars and coins – doesn't do it justice. Just try it.

echochrome

It might just give you a headache, but that's part of its genius. The "what you see is truth" philosophy works wonders and can twist your mind into knots; at first, it seems simple enough: turn and rotate the camera just so in order for a little stick figure to reach his intended goal. A wonderful classical score will accompany this seemingly straightforward walk along a black-and-white path. But oh, the puzzles begin to hit you hard very soon and before long, you're shaking your head in perplexity. The whole thing is just plain brilliant.

Shatter

A brick-breaker of the highest caliber, Shatter features one of the best soundtracks you'll ever hear and several great twists on a tried-and-true puzzle/action formula. Control your "ball" by "sucking" and "blowing," grab unique power-ups, face off against tricky bosses, and even tackle entirely new stage formats (horizontal, vertical, and even circular). It's as slick as slick can be and endlessly entertaining, so it needs to be part of your PSN library. Magic Orbz is also lots of fun in a different way (and we recommend that one, too), but Shatter is in a brick-breaking class all by itself.

There are other awesome PSN titles out there; we don't want you to forget about great stuff like Cuboid , Trine , Soldner-X 2: Final Prototype , Fat Princess and Braid . But the above five…you just don't have a choice. Try 'em.

Not really into PSN games, flower intrigues me but I find the money is better spent putting toward full titles.

I got it when they had the spring fever sale. Best $5 I ever spent. Try and save up specifically for that as it is a truly amazing game!

@ world

I have played flower because I got it from a friend and it's an interesting title and all, but not my thing and a very simple game at that.

If I had played a demo I wouldn't have bought it.

yeah, despite all the thumbs down, I think I can survive without most PSN titles. For quirky arcady fun I still have my Dreamcast. But any solid PS1 titles I will buy if I don't already own.

Fat Princess is well worth the money. As are all the above listed games. I'd definitely recommend giving PSN titles a shot the quality to price ratio is sometimes is higher than some fully priced titles.

You're really missing out. Many PSN games aren't just bite-size versions of "bigger and better" $60 titles. They're entirely different than anything you've ever played before, and for only $8 – $15, they provide very unique experiences. And the idea that they're in any way similar to something on the DC is also inaccurate.

I would pay $10 for something like Flower LONG before I'd pay $60 for many of the full $60 games.

World,

To each his own, but don't discount them out of hand.

If you wait for sale prices, you can get (up to) 12 PSN games for the price of one retail game. I own like 30 of them and some have given me more value than any "full" PS3 game I've bought, except Oblivion.

Have you tried any of the demos/trial versions?

WorldEndsWithMe

I've tried the demos, they never do it for me or hold my attention long. I'm in a place where I need either massive exploration or a good story to keep me rolling.

World, I was right there with you for a while. I never expected to ever buy a single game made for downloadable purposes. But really, many of the games mentioned in this article are so unique and entertaining in their own way, I'm glad I tried them.

I'll do my best not to rule them out then 🙂

Another point on the PSN games and yes even the XBLA releases is they are made by independent studios who aren't yet jaded enough by the industry to push out what they think will sell. They make games close to their hearts and you can tell. Braid is a masterpiece because it takes tried and true formulas used in many games before it and it uses these gameplay types as a sort of symbol for the story, yes it's 15 bucks but sometimes the investment is an experience the big developers can't even deliver, or is delivered far too infrequently in a generation dominated by MW2. This is not to say all $60.00 aren't worth it far from it, I can easily recommend every PS3 exclusive and some choice multiplats, but in an age where we can download genuine gems made by smaller studios trying to get into the industry it's worth investing now, so in the future they release games with the same spirit on a bigger scale. Sorry that was a bit impassioned and lengthy.

I might get a year of plus since they include wipeout hd and that alone is worth 40% of the price and I have been wanting to try it for a while.

I really want to try Joe Danger when I get home and Flower will probably be one of the first games I replay when I get home since I've been wanting to since I left.

Record of Aggarest War!!!
It's a full game an it's only available ont he PSN (for ps3).

If you love comedy, romance, and a bunch of babes to accompany you through your rpg journey this a fun game to get.

Then after that Wipeout HD, Flower, Fat Princess, etc.

I'll admit though, I'm much more of a FULL game kinda person.

Sucks that PS3 owners only get a digital copy of it while the xbox version gets a disk…along with a limited edition. I don't know why aksys decided to exclude physical media to the PS3 version. Don't they know that its PlayStation fans that like that kind of stuff?

And speaking of aksys games, I found their marketing of the game a bit deceptive. They made it seem like it's nearly an eroge.

i found the 360 version in fry's. the box was all beat up and covered with white paper so that the boxart wasnt shown. funny thing is, they covered the price too.

Record of Agarest War is on a PS3 disc also, you just have to import it from Europe. Standard and Collector's Editions are available.

sonic1899

@Geobaldi
But that's EUROPE (don't assume that everyone is going to consider imports) and if I recall, the European version didn't support trophies. Plus, the xbox version [in the US] had the limited edition and a disk, while the PS3 version [in the US] didn't.

I checked the US amazon site and you can get the european version from there for 49.99 + 7.00 shipping, however one reviewer said it only works on US PS3's with HDMI cables(no AV cables) and the US downloadable content only works with the downloadable version.

So even though you can get it, you have to have the right setup(although by now, most people should) and you can't use the downloadable content.

Not being able to use the DLC is big negative…

I would import the European version, but missing on the DLC would be a win/lose situation.

I saw Wipeout HD Fury for forty bucks last time I was in JB Hi-fi. I got Batman and Valkyria Chronicles instead. If it's there next time I'm there I'll definitely pick it up. I've got echochrome for the psp. And when can I have my PSN compilation?

Peace.

Super Stardust HD is the best for me. easy to pick up and play, really hard to master, fun and addictive.

yeah, got that as soon as i played the demo. i'm 1 trophy away from 100%. its the one you gotta blow up 10 nukes is endless i think. Its pretty damn hard to get that trophy when about 98% of the planet is covered with a lot of different enemies.

Of those five I have WipEout HD. A well beloved series. I also have every intention of giving Joe Danger a go. I nearly went and purchased Trials HD for 360, but I read (somewhere) the two games are pretty similar and it would seem that Joe Danger may be the better game. I miss good old school side-scrolling shooters like Life Quest and R-Type so Soldner-X2 looks appealing.

I also have enjoyed many hours with Tekken 5DR (during pre-Tekken 6 days), Warhawk, Burnout (don't know if that classifies). I also liked the Ratchet one.

Honestly I think most of these game are creative, but they just aren't my thing.

I played the demo for wipeout HD and I was bored with it before I played all the levels on the demo.

I played 3 levels of flower and got bored with it.

Played the fat princess demo and that was enough of it for me, braid got old in about 3 hours, shatter sounds like a brick puzzle game and those games hold no interest for me at all.

Joe danger I know I would play every now and then, but not enough to pay $15 for it.

The truth is, these games may only be $10-$20, but they only hold 2-5 hours of entertainment at best for me personally. The same money to buy all of these psn games I could get 2 full disc based rpgs and get over 200 hours of fun.

I know some people love them and thats fine, I understand why, but I will keep my money for games I like.

Those five suck & aren't "must buy" nuff said. I recommend these:

Peggle – it's sooo f'n addicting. the new tetris
Topatoi – A real gem. No one really talks about this one.
Trine – HD fun side scroller
Braid – really nice "cartoon-ish" looking graphics
Tekken 5

Lower you said nothing on PSN blew you away… I'm not sure $10 games are meant to be GOTY contenders. I just don't get your standards.

Also, can't comment on your second comment, because it's pending approval.

The only game which Ben listed that "sucks" is Shatter, but that's part of the gameplay.

However, your suggestions are good except for Topatoi. Worst platformer I've ever played.

@ Underdog

Tekken 5: DR is a port of the PSP port of the PS2 game (I think I got that right) and definitely NOT a PS1 game.

Ah perfect. Thanks. Good to know! Still though, I don't think you can list that and count it as a PSN title. It's more of a re-release available on the PSN. It isn't designed specifically for PSN, as is the list Ben posted up for us.

@Fane1024 Topatoi, to me is a gorgeous looking 'download only' game. & AGAIN! No talk of this little gem, ever!

@Underdog15 So Braid & Peggle are two games I like, ported from LIVE. Geometry Wars interested me hardcore, hence it was my first contact at what the downloadable arcades were going to be about. It was trippy, fun. Me & my buds played it all the time. I'm definitely a Playstation kind of guy & I had high expectations of these downloadable arcade games. Sure, some PSN games I enjoyed. But not to exceed my expectations or the quality. I could careless about GOTY nominations.. I want something to entertain me. Immerse me. Something old-school yet fresh.Your cup of tea, ist not my cup of tea. I think mine is half-full or is that half-empty?
