A Gamer’s New Year’s Resolutions

I suppose we all have to make a few, as we're imperfect beings who constantly need improvement. But how's about some game-centric resolutions? Here are mine.

I resolve to keep an open mind about more genres

I actually make this resolution almost every year since I played RPGs almost exclusively back in the late '90s. I've come a long way and in all honesty, I love playing great games in just about every genre. However, I always say I try to avoid titles in the flight, fighting, and WRPG genres, primarily because I've never really gotten into any of those categories at any point in my gaming career. Even so, 2009 opened my eyes to the likes of IL-2 Sturmovik: Birds of Prey , Street Fighter IV and Dragon Age: Origins . And although I probably would never have played the first two for too long, Origins really grabbed me in a way that few WRPGs have in the past. While I was reviewing Birds of Prey and Heroes Over Europe , I found I was having more fun than anticipated and even though SFIV proved too frustrating for me, I played it for quite a while. This is why you always need to keep an open mind…you never know what you might find.

I resolve to keep a closer eye on the Network

Even with the many great games I've taken off the PSN, I still don't check the new releases on the PSN as often I should. One would think that after simply adoring titles like Flower , Echochrome , Wipeout HD , Shatter , Magic Ball and others, I'd be routinely going through any and all new releases on a weekly basis. And yet, towards the end of last year, the weeks started to fly by and I found myself getting behind in terms of PSN content. I got to some releases a little late and although they weren't exactly fantastic, they were fairly worthwhile experiences. Besides, with thatgamecompany working on their next game, I'll be guaranteed to nab that one, and many of the PSN exclusives just seem to keep getting better with time. So yeah, I should definitely hit that Network icon on my PS3 every Thursday.

I resolve to take no offense to the "gamers" who give real gamers a bad name

I maintain a vain belief that the majority of the immature gaming community will grow up, but with every passing year, I'm repeatedly disappointed. Bastions of idiocy still exist within communities all across the 'Net (N4G, Destructoid, etc.) and no matter what I do to avoid them, remnants of that rampant retardation tend to find their way to my eyes. I used to get frustrated, basically because I know these people make gamers look like abusive, entirely negative losers with gigantic superiority complexes, and I didn't appreciate it. But I've resolved to take no further notice; there isn't anything I can do about it, besides help run a website that makes a conscious effort to keep only civil, knowledgeable, relaxed members. If you guys know others who suffer through the crap we don't have to deal with, invite them over to PSXE. 🙂

Miscellaneous

I have non-gaming resolutions, too, but I won't bore you with the details. I want to be able to row for a straight 45 minutes without stopping, for instance; right now, I do 25 minutes, break for 7, then do another 25. And by the way, if anyone thinks this is easy, I suggest getting on a rowing machine. I've been doing it for over a year and a half and when I first started, I couldn't do more than 10 minutes. Now, I'll do nearly 15 without even breaking a sweat. I also want to up the weight amount I use one more time; currently, it's 1 65 lb. and 2 55 lb. weights for my workouts, but I'd like to be able to use 3 65s for all routines. I also plan to read War and Peace before 2010 is out, but I love reading too much and I have other classics I want to read first…

As for the girlfriend thing…eh. I have no comment at this time. Lastly, if anybody here doesn't recognize the pic here, I don't even know you. 😉

One of the best comic strips ever. Too bad Calvin is now mostly seen pissing on automobile company logos on the back of pickup trucks.

Interesting resolutions. N4G can be a guilty pleasure. I know it's bad for me but I continue to read the mindless gossip.

Regarding your open-mindedness of other genres unfortunately I think gaming developers are forcing me to think the same way. JRPGs are my bread and butter when it comes to console gaming and this generation has really screwed me. Thankfully I've at least given Western RPGs my time and walked away entertained for the most part.

You want to row more; I want to do more pushups at once. Used to do 300 now I'm lucky to do 100. I blame gaming completely but hopefully I can get some exercise in during the movie, I mean game FF13.

I guess I resolve to put off playing my games until I get some actual pages written for the day. I have trouble with that.

And to get another article put up by PSXE 🙂

Ya no kidding, where the hell are these articles. Quit dogging it. Be thankful you have the opportunity; I'm just a shmuck that gets to play second fiddle.

You buy FF8 on the PSN yet?

I dunno, the forum section for them has been inactive awhile and I spend my days on fiction. (God send that I get this book out THIS year)

No I haven't DLed it because I still have my original PS1 discs 🙂

Pff who doesn’t have it on PS1? Seriously, I bought it on day 1 back in the 90s and on day 1 when it came out in the 00s on PSN.

Like Scarecrow said it's a beauty on the PSP.

Also I like to throw my money at games that have earned it and FF8 has definitely given me more entertainment than the original 50 dollars so another 10 doesn’t seem too unfair.

Start writing articles so I can read them, I promise to give you my 2cents as always.

That's definitely one great opportunity! I would love to do that!

Well, I'm pretty sure you can get them up there. I know i don't know you, but I've read a lot of articles and you are a great contributor here, proof shown in the honorable mentions, along with LV there, so I think you can manage to get Ben to put them up! I hope so, i would love to read them!

Thanks to_far, he has put one of mine up, one of my more comical entries. There is a place on the forums where he puts up a topic and people can submit their writings. The forums can be a good place to express yourself and learn about the community 🙂

Anytime world, i took the liberty of reading earlier articles, and i respect the contributions you've made here to PSXE, along with some of the others like Highlander, LimitedVertigo, and many of those listed by Ben and the staff, i can see why they took time to mention you all, you all are great people and very outgoing, glad to see some people around here like you all. I hope to gain a familiarity with all of you!

Really? I never knew there was a section dedicated to that in the forums, I've really never taken the time to go there actually? Where would i go, it seems very interesting, I'm always up for expressing myself in the community. I'm also interested in reading your entry, you seem like a very good writer!

Check the upper right corner of any PSXE page and click "Forums" you have to make a separate account for it of course but it's worth it for the discussions and we could always use a level headed fellow like yourself 🙂

Thank you for the information! I just registered! I'll start snooping around later on throughout the day. I tired typing you in as the person who referred me but it kept on telling me it was an invalid referrer. I'm not sure why it didn't work.

Thanks for the compliment, i greatly appreciate it 🙂 I just like to discuss my opinion with everyone here and enjoy talking about games and love to write. We'll be seeing more of each other then!

I aim to read about WWII(anything I can get my hands on) for at least 1 hour a night. I want to know everything. Thats all I have right now. I'm happy with my physical condition, I can run 5 miles in under 40 minutes, which is probably better than 80% of America.

Oh, and I will climb the highest point in New York this year with my cousin.

I resolve to not be duped by sports games this year. MLB is the only definite. Tiger is going to have to wow me with the demo.

Also, I resolve to go back into my library and finish some games that I didn't complete the first time around.

One of my resolutions is to try genres I haven't paid attetion to before like Survival horror and racing games. I'd figured Dead rising 2 and GT5 will be great starts for those respectable genres.

Fane1024
Fane1024

It would be better to start with older, cheaper iterations (e.g., Dead Space). That way, if you don't like them, less money lost. And if you do like them, you get to play the newer, hopefully better games AFTER the older ones and not vice versa.

Also, Dead Rising 2 (if you meant that and not Dead Space 2) isn't survival horror. It's an action game.

My resolution: backlog, backlog, backlog.

Calvin and Hobbes and Bloom County were my favorites back in the day.

New years resolutions: to juggle gaming, completing my PhD and increasing my proficiency in the Japanese language.

Yeah the PhD is killing me but being a dedicated gamer myself, I'd squeeze in a few hours of gaming before I sleep. Even if I finish my daily activities at 9-10 pm. Gosh, imaging doing all these if one is involved in a relationship….

Oh, and being from Adelaide, Australia, I am praying that major game releases doesn't get delayed or ridiculously censored from this year. I mean, we PAL region ppl are still waiting for PS3 GOW: collection, can you imagine how painful is that?

Well mines is to TRY and get more games for my 360 😉 I bought only SFIV for Steve Ballmer's console in 2009. Whiles I bought about 10 PS3 games in that same year, its not my fault you wouldn't make your LIVE free. 2010, am wishing I buy more games for dear old 360.

Gotta admit, I simply love this website. If only more people used the forums…I'd love to get more members of this community on my Friends List.

My main resolution for the year is to work on my health. I definitely drink and smoke too much, don't eat healthy enough, don't sleep well, and don't work out enough. That said, my career is looking bright…You win some, you lose some.

As for gaming…my resolution for this year is to complete the games I buy. I have Dragon Age: Origins (360) and Ratchet and Clank Future: A Crack in Time sitting on my shelf untouched. I'm in the middle of playthroughs of Assassins Creed 2, Batman: Arkham Asylum, and inFamous. I am promising myself to trophy hunt the God of War Collection (already beat both games on PS2) before God of War 3 comes out.

And maybe…just maybe…if the software lineups are a little more even (2009 was a PS3 landslide)…I'd like to even out the amount of time I spend with both of my consoles.

I plan on not using so much money, rather saving some…don`t know how though, seeing as there are massive amounts of good games coming out 2010(MAG, Mass Effect 2, God of War 3, Gran Turismo 5, Alan Wake etc.)…pretty much screwed.

And working out, yeah, have some plans there too. Play more fotball, more swimming(and not get a kramp)…and get better grades at school..ahem!

Oh, merry christmas and happy new year everyone 🙂 Looking forward too read future news here at PSX.

The only resolution ( yes just one, I like to keep it simple ) I'm making is to have more patience with co-op play with my daughter. I usually like to play alone but my daughter always wants me to play with her. Co-op never turns out be cooperative when I play with others as everybody wants to do their own thing instead of working together. I very well could be the problem in this situation and I vow to work it out.
