While it's great that the weather is getting warmer, I effing hate this time of year because the pollen mercilessly attacks my car. Bah.

Okay, WKC is coming…bring it!

So far this generation, I've really only been disappointed in most of the RPGs I've tried. I mean, I can say I liked both Eternal Sonata and Star Ocean: The Last Hope , but not enough to finish either, and the latter pissed me off towards the end of my 20 hours of play time. Yeah, Persona 4 is fantastic but I don't consider it a next-gen RPG, and the likes of Oblivion and Mass Effect just don't suit my tastes. Therefore, I turn my hopes to White Knight Chronicles , which is confirmed for North America and we now have some fresh details thanks to that PlayStation blog interview with US Producer Tsubasa Inaba. It's not true turn-based – they call it "action/turn-based," which probably means it's similar to Star Ocean – but I have high hopes for the combat. It better not be as lame as The Last Hope 's, but based on that lone gameplay video we have, it appears to be a very different animal. I know it often takes a while for the RPGs to start rolling in any given generation, but this time, it's taking an inordinate amount of time. Or maybe it just seems that way.

I should mention that I liked Valkyria Chronicles a lot and it remains one of the best games on the PS3, but again…not entirely my style. The other RPG (besides FFXIII, of course) that I have my eye on is End of Eternity , which could be something very special. I still need to see some gameplay footage, but I've read a brief explanation of the battles and it sounds bad-ass. Guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Wheee!!! Katamari is coming back!!!

So the new and official announcement is simple: Katamari Forever will be exclusive to the PlayStation 3, and it'll be bigger and better than any iteration before it. I own all three Katamari titles thus far – two on the PS2 and one on the Xbox 360 – and I just love those games. I remember the first time I played it; I believe I got it in the mail to review (for another site, way back when) and I was like, "oh great, another no-name crappy Japanese title." But within five minutes, I was hooked. It's quite possibly one of the most insane concepts in video game history but it's damn surprising how well it works. Rolling around, picking up increasingly larger items, accompanied with kooky sound effects and that zany J-Pop soundtrack is just way too addicting…and I can't even explain exactly why . All I know is whenever they make a new game, I'm gonna buy it. And while I was annoyed that Beautiful Katamari didn't go to a Sony platform after the first two entries were exclusive to the PS2, Namco is making nice with all the PlayStation fans out there. And all I can say is- "thank you!"

Some of you may not be familiar with these games and if not, I strongly suggest picking one up. It really doesn't matter which one, but really, I'd recommend the sequel on the PS2, We Love Katamari . It's not "better" than Beautiful Katamari , per se, but for some reason, I remember it as being a lot longer…

Personal gaming update

So yeah, I'm still working my way through LittleBigPlanet , which is endlessly creative and entertaining. But as it's something I can pick up and play for a few hours here and there, I kinda wanted something deeper and I've already passed on Star Ocean . Well, I intend to get Resident Evil 5 and either Red Faction: Guerilla or inFamous for my birthday this summer so I can play those games, but in the meantime, there's nothing I desperately want. And because I'm still disappointed in the RPG lacking, I went and started a new game of Final Fantasy VIII . Yep, it's true. I usually start at least one new game of FFT and FFVII once per year but for some reason, I never started another game of FFVIII after beating it over ten years ago. Well, now's the time, even though I doubt I'll actually finish it; I just love the nostalgia of it, and I forgot how very singular the new battle style with the Draw and Junction systems were. I also forgot how addictive that Triple Triad Card game was… Jeebus. LOL I'm already playing too much in the first hour! And of course, I did absolutely everything when I played all those years ago: Omega Weapon dead, my three main characters maxed at Lv. 100, etc. …probably won't manage that again.

As for the weird conundrum I'm in, I don't what the HELL is going on. I talked to both today and I can't even tell if one is pissed at the other, or if one is going to back off or whatever. All I know is that both are interested in…something. I don't even know how to respond to this mess. I wanna run and hide. I sense danger.

Really?! Katamari for the PS3 finally! Oh, how I have waited for the day! I thought Namco had abandoned PS3 owners with the Katamari games, but it looks like I was wrong. I cant wait for it either, Ben. 🙂

Don't worry about it too much, it'll work out somehow, I just recently started a new game in ffvii, doubt I'll finish it though, and I'm thinking of picking up RE5 when inFamous comes out too

BTW Ben, here's something cool on LBP : There's a user-created lvl that goes by the name of Dollet(Just type it in the search). And yes, it does refer to the Dollet of FFVIII. IT's awesome, really.

Have fun with FFVIII, I actually got all the way through it again in 2008. I still remember watching the teaser for it at the EB in the Mall of America all those years ago.

I have high hopes for WKC, even if turn based is dead. And well Persona 4 never tried to be a next gen experience since it's a PS2 game. But I'm enjoying it for what it is.

I remember working at EB during the hype season for FFVIII and we had that teaser playing all the time.

I would work full days and never get tired of seeing it. That's how awesome it was. 🙂

In regards to your predicament… If they aren't mad at each other… maybe there is understanding between each other. Maybe… you can have both at the same time! Jackpot for the Ben Dukta. (and you didn't even need a million dollars to pull it off!) Hahaha. In all honesty, I have no idea what you should do. I say you stick to your games and let it all play out lol.

…and please, don't put that thought in my head. I don't need it there.

I actually found ff8 more enjoyable than ff7. Loved the story in ff8, hated the draw system. ff8>ff7
But by far ff6 is the best ff to me

I don't get why people whine 'bout the Draw system

You're getting good magic, stop complaining! 😀

Seriously

The badass weapons in that gamne makes up for it.

Oh and the fact that FFVIII has the best Summons in ANY FF is also a great plus when it comes to the fighting/combat.

Finding the right draw points in ff8 was both a nuscense and a inconvenience, great game though. By the way what's all this talk about ff8 not working on a ps3? I'm about to pop the game in and test it since I no longer have a ps2.

it really seems like there is little problem within this situation… its possible that their friendship and dating dont cross over into each other much, but then again… it is a bit early to tell…
just do whatever feels right and it will surely come together nicely.

Im jealous of you atm though. (Its not the girls, i swear :))
Im very jealous of the fact that you are playing through FFVIII from the begining again.
I've been wanting to play though that game again so much that i cant even explain, its maddening when trying to get the first disc to work… something it absolutely refuses to do.
I've not played the game since i picked up my PS2 and really wish i could go through it again

You can probably find a fairly cheap replacement on eBay if you needed to. I certainly understand the urge to play a certain game. 😉

As for the situation…I really don't know what's up. 🙁

I never played katamari it always seemed interesting but I never tried it…I can't wait to see how End Of Eternity turns out it seems like it will be different…I play FFVIII every year its my favorite FF title because thats the one that got me hooked on the series! For me the best rpg I've played this gen is Lost Odyssey. Im hoping for more jrpgs @E3! I never played VC because I never really liked strategy-jrpg….

PS3 needs more RPGs.

I heard that all the Katamari games were super good, but alas, I thought one of them for the PS2 was too crazy looking.

That's what I thought about Locoroco and Patapon at first too, but both were really good.

I love FFVIII's music (and every other FF but VIII was my 2nd), and as I was learning the songs on guitar I realized that Kingdom Hearts seems to sound very similiar =D
Which is cool.

Hah Ben, you have to go about Drawing the magics all over again 😉

Banky A, I was just thinking about the musics for FF games then I saw your post. I've got all of the musics from FF1 to X-2. I strongly believe after X-2 Square-Enix has not pushed out any FF music that I enjoyed. I'm a art guy so I really enjoy any music when I work, so instrumentals from FF and a few Rock Band has been doing it for me. Can't wait for WKC and i still can't get Valkyria Chronicles here in Canada!

Yeah, I love listening to FF background songs when I do any solo work.
It's just awesome and relaxing.

XII was military and political so I didn't get the same feeling as the rest.

And I have a feeling XIII isn't going to have as many amazing scores as usua; 🙁

Final Fantasy VIII…mmm, my favorite FF dish. How'd you know, Ben?

Don't you love it?
-FF8 has the best opening scene.
-The Best opening theme music (sorry FF7).
-The most relatable Main Character; Squall was a gangsta and cold-hearted playa.
-The Gunblade is the best FF weapon ever (yeah, I said it).
-And the GFs?! Best GFs hands-down. Odin was BAD-ASS. Diablos was cool as a fan. And how funny was the Tonberry King?
-Oh and the playable Laguna flashbacks?! Great storytelling technique.

Enjoy your next playthrough Ben. And be sure to kick some Sorceress' ass.

Well Ben…
I have to said that given your love for Lost Odyssey you somehow motivated me to bougth the game. I find it at a bargain so I couldn resist. The game is good. But I really and without sounding disrespectfull dont know what the hell you loved so much about this game. The story, until now for me, its kinda boring. I like the battle system and the way it tries to stays in the roots of old RPG,s. The graphics are really good sometimes, in the battles; and ugly sometimes, in the towns and places you visited. Im still, and maybe thats just my opinion havent found a better RPG, even if its tactical, than Valkiria Chronicles.

If I want to play some RPGs, some really good ones, I tend to play old games on older consoles. And some easy entertaining ones like Brave Story on PSP.

As for you playing FFVIII, I have to said you are lucky to have the game. Thats the only FF I havent played and I wish Square or Sony put it on the PSstore so everyone can buy this game and have good memories of what a good RPG is all about.

I just love turn-based battles, and this mechanic works extremely well in LO. No, the story itself isn't that great, but the Dreams you find and read are VERY well done. In fact, it almost seems as if two different people wrote the actual game script and those Dreams…the latter features some of the best writing I've ever seen in games. I enjoy things like that.

Hey Ben, I think you did the right thing. It sounds like you were respectful to both of them, AND, most importantly, you told the girl who likes LBP about the phone call. Two things worth noting: YOU didn't make the phone call to "Amy," she called you. And two, if both girls are mad at each other, I'd say that's their problem. In my opinion, you should go out with "Courtney" again and forget about the other one. "Amy" was among the few girls that laughed in disbelief about your occupation, am I right? "Courtney" didn't downplay your occupation and passion for video games – so I think she's a keeper, or at least another date.

oh, and props on starting FFVIII again. I needed to do the same as you, but I chose FFIX since I never finished it.
