Ben’s Week In Review: November 29

Hope everyone had a happy Thanksgiving and now, the Christmas rush is upon us. You go out for Black Friday? 😉

PlayStation 4 passes 30 million, still ahead of PS2

For the record, I don't believe for a second that PS4 can actually outsell PS2, which ended up selling over 155 million units worldwide. There's no chance PS4 passes that number.

The industry is completely different today; PS2 had very little competition, as Xbox and GameCube didn't put up much of a fight and nowadays, Microsoft is always a stiff competitor and Nintendo is tossing a wrench into the works. They're going to launch their new system in the middle of this new generation and some believe this could exert pressure on both Sony and Microsoft to produce another console before originally intended. I'm not sure that's going to happen, as Nintendo is no longer in direct competition with PlayStation and Xbox. The demographics and overall audiences are just too different. Even so, this generation will not wear on long enough and Sony won't keep PS4 in production long enough (PS2 got nearly 13 years); 160 million+ is a pipe dream.

Still, 30 million sold worldwide after just two years is nothing to sneeze at. It's all the more impressive because after last generation, when PS3 and Xbox 360 duked it out (and PS3 had to overcome a very slow start), it was hard to envision an era where a PlayStation console outsold an Xbox system by nearly a 2:1 margin. Depending on which sources you use, it looks like Xbox One isn't much past 16 or 17 million at this point (even though I know it'll outsell PS4 during the holidays, as it already did in November ). On top of which, 2016 looks like the year of the PS4 with all those great exclusives on tap, so I believe Sony will ultimately win the console war. But beating the PS2 total? No.

People seem a mite worried about Rainbow Six Siege

The negative feedback started swirling when Ubisoft was forced to delay the open beta and even though they've been working on it (it might be working now ), gamers are not impressed.

The publisher has been saying all along that this game could be absolutely huge but right now, it's not looking good. Just based on this article , it seems there are a lot of ticked-off consumers out there, and most are simply deciding to pass on Rainbow Six Siege due to the beta issues. Don't forget that the anticipated tactical shooter is supposed to launch this week, on December 1. Therefore, it's hard to believe the developers when they say the launch should go smoothly after they've got everything fixed. I mean, it has only been a matter of days since this beta went south and the full game is supposed to be on store shelves on Tuesday. …not encouraging. That's the problem when betas fail in this way; if they're really close to the actual launch, that title could be in serious trouble.

Personal gaming update

I tried to like Sword Art Online: Lost Song but it wasn't gonna happen. I'm not an anime fan and on top of that, the gameplay simply wasn't very good. Shallow, repetitive, and a campaign with a lackluster narrative really drag this game down. It's too bad because some of it's actually fun. Obviously, though, it's designed with the hardcore "Sword Art" fans in mind, so unless you qualify as such, I wouldn't waste your time. There are plenty of great holiday titles available right now, and don't forget that Just Cause 3 drops this week. It's getting a huge day one patch but what open-world game doesn't these days?

After I'm done with Rainbow Six Siege (if it's even playable this week) and JC3, I'm going back to Assassin's Creed Syndicate . I suppose it's feasible that JC3 could hook me because I've always liked the free-wheeling concept. But unless Avalanche has finally decided to fix the controls that have plagued that IP from the start, and unless I feel like there's a point to the mayhem, I might lose interest fast. We'll see.

I thought we were over this console war garbage. With that said, PS4 is on top for good reason so that's that!!!

I hope JC3 is good because the trailers got me hyped. I'll be waiting on your review and others before proceeding with a purchase. Enjoy Syndicate, definitely beckons back to the heyday of AC with 2/Brotherhood.

Was never interested in Rainbow Six, but I would love to see how this turns out.

I went out for Black Friday, but the best deals I got were online. I ordered a Target online Wii U bundle for 250. It came with Smash and Splatoon. I also got Mario Kart 8 for 45 from Amazon. I think my family will get a kick out of it.
I'll likely check out Bayonetta 2 and Devil's Third myself. I am curious about the Xeno game releasing soon. The game looks awfully pretty and Monoloth made the excellent Xenosaga, a game I very much enjoyed on PS2. I'll also get myself psyched for their Zelda game next year.

PGU: I actually loaded up Witcher 3 and played an hour of it last night to see how it's patched up. It has been improved, having only spotted about 3 or 4 minor bugs, all visual. I still think Geralt steps way too much into his turn for my liking, but stuff like that you sorta get used to overtime.
I finally found that purple fruit cake who was with Ciri. I also wasn't about to cheat on my dark haired girlfriend by kissing that red head girl at the fountain. Sorry I'm loyal. Anyway. I won't be able to determine a "better" game between FO4 and Witcher 3 (I don't have that kind of time).

Though, I think I've played enough of either to get a sense that Witcher's efforts to push openworld design towards a stronger narrative is the most significant achievement for the genre this year.
So basically, when things more or less feel about equal in scope and quality the game that does the most for the genre get's my vote.

I highly recommend Bayonetta 2,even with my hate goggles on I couldn't bring my self not to love it.Devil's third on the other hand is shit,Itagaki should concentrate on making better games instead of talking cap about DOA.

Use the alternate control scheme for Geralt. It was delivered with one of the updates and while it makes it far less realistic in terms of momentum physics, he basically turns on a dime if that's what you want.

Witcher 3's attention to detail as far as story telling is unmatched compared to Fallout 4. But Fallout 4 gives you more opportunities to create your own story within the framework, but that open endness also affects the story alot. But then again, you are allowed to create your own destiny unlike the W3. But the Witcher 3 answers all of your questions in a very meaningful way due to the linear storytelling. But I definitely feel my choices in Fallout 4,especially towards the ending will stay with me longer than the Witcher.

Outside of this, Fallout 4 has better gameplay, atmosphere, music, setting, etc. Fallout 4, for me, is the more involving fulfilling experience.

Atmosphere is entirely subjective; for me, Fallout 4 is God-awful. I don't even think the world features very good design. And the music in The Witcher 3 is fantastic because at least it HAS music that makes its presence felt more often. Fallout 4 has its moments but it's not consistent.

And I still don't see how gameplay is any better at all. Control is far from perfect and there is a definite balancing issue with the Traits. And it's only "fulfilling" if you enjoy wandering for eons until something interesting happens. I don't know why people aren't noticing all this, or maybe choosing to ignore it.

Some of what I complain about is indeed subjective but a lot of it is not. They are obvious flaws, so very common to Bethesda design, and they haven't been fixed. A lot of Fallout 3 fans will attest to this, too.

"I don't even think the world features very good design"

And here I thought I was the only one to think that about Fallout.

Ben you are absolutely right sir. The stiff character models are a big no no in todays age and the voice acting doesnt seem to be appropriate during certain scenes. With that said, both games are great. I think the Hearts of Stone dlc out did itself. The storytelling was great and the action was better than the main campaign. Hopefully Fallouts dlc csn leave me with the same satisfaction.

I went out for black friday. Didn't get anything gming related except for Diablo 3 on the PS store. I could have got it for $20 at gamestop but I didn't wanna deal with people so I downloaded it for $26. I really wanted to play more of it on PS3. It's one of two games (Borderlands) I really still want to play from last generation. I meant to get it when it released for PS4 anyways, and I couldn't pass on the price.

The only reason PS4 won't catch the PS2 is the PS2 was priced rediculously cheap when the PS3 launched they were practically giving it away. I have a strong feeling the PS4 will outsell the PS2 in the same amount of time the PS2 was Sonys only console on shelves. After that though I don't see Sony dropping the PS4 to the prices the PS2 was whenever the PS5 releases. In other words it might not ever hit 155 million but it will have a faster growth up until the next generation.

I don't care what Xbox is doing because whatever they are doing is healthy for the industry growth either way.

PGU: Black ops 3. Hopefully some Diablo 3 mixed in until Christmas when I hopefully get Fallout 4. That should hold me over until Uncharted 4.

That really is not the only reason. Sony will never produce the PS4 for over 12 years for one, and don't forget that developers continued to make games for PS2 for more than half the PS3's lifespan. That certainly never happened again. PS3 was also ridiculously overpriced and with a lackluster first year, there was actually more incentive to buy a PS2, with a massive library of games. Titles like God of War II didn't even come out until after PS3 was on store shelves. FFXII came out on PS2 just a few weeks before PS3 launched, for crying out loud.

So no, PS2's price is hardly the only reason.

I only said the PS4 won't catch the PS2 because of its price. I'm well aware why the PS2 sold well.

But you proved my point when you mentioned the PS3'S super high price. Why would an average consumer pay $600 for a PS3 when they can pay $100 for the PS2? That was my point and the PS4 will never be sold for $100. The price difference between the PS4 and Sonys next console may not justify buying a PS4.

Like I said the PS4 may not reach the PS2 numbers buy during its productive life span I'm guessing it will sell more in the same amount of time than the PS2. At this rate it's easily achievable.

To be fair, with silicon nearing it's peak, computer hardware, at least to me, seems like it's decreasing in value at a much slower rate than it did 10 years ago. Throw in features like how cheap DVD players were by 2007, no networking hardware, no harddrive requirements, etc. etc. And it's pretty easy to see how PS2 could be sold so cheaply while the PS3 and PS4 can probably not be easily produced and sold for viable profit at $100 ever.

Unless the Nintendo NX is a suit of Power Armor I don't see it putting much pressure on anybody except the Ninty gamers who need the newest Zeldas and Marios.

Be kinda funny if it was another flop actually. I don't hate Ninty, they used to be great, but I don't think they get it anymore. We need Dreamcast 2.

Sadly Action JRPGs are always pretty shallow, even Tales of Zestiria (while fun for its characters and general feel) is not the direction I saw Tales going. We need an actual Final Fantasy more than ever.

Speaking of, I want my PS4 FFVII port. How facking long could that take? They better be enhancing the hell out of it.

I've probably played 24 hours of Fallout over the weekend. I can't stop!

Hey Ben, you should also change the links for the letter/number choice in PS4 Reviews. They link to "reviews6/letter-??? html", but they are stored in "ps4-reviews/letter-??? html" like the PS3 reviews are.

Oh but i guess it's because the mother directory/(newest PS4 reviews) is reviews6/reviews.asp.
So I think you just have to move that to ps4-reviews/reviews.asp and the letter links should work, because if you manually insert ps4-reviews/letter-??? html into the address bar, they work just fine for every other letter.
I'm no expert in this stuff though.

That one didn't do it for me. I'm thinking Syndicate and maybe something else newish. Man I have a ton of games. What to get the man who has everything right?

Syndicate and Black Ops 3! 😉

I almost bought Syndicate because it was $35 on the PS store (still is) but I got Diablo 3 instead. Plus I'm hoping to get Fallout 4 for Christmas so Syndicate would have taken a back seat in a month anyways.
