Ben’s Week In Review: June 15

E3 is over and while it didn't make me tingle with excitement, it was a relatively solid show.

Not sure we saw the PS4 exclusives we wanted to see, but…

No The Last Guardian , no new God of War and Gran Turismo entries, no unveiling of Guerrilla's new RPG, and no gameplay for Uncharted 4: A Thief's End .

But it wasn't all about multiplatform titles for Sony (despite the fact that they opened their conference with Destiny ). I'm very intrigued by Bloodborne , as the recently released gameplay is quite tempting. It really does look like Darksiders 2 and because of that, I'm plenty stoked. No Man's Sky , Let it Die and Abzu are also very promising titles , and the heavy hitter in that group is undoubtedly LittleBigPlanet 3 . The only downside is that Media Molecule isn't in charge.

In brief, it wasn't the best show I've ever seen and in fact, I got pretty bored at times. There really are a lot of shooters on tap again this year ( Far Cry 4 , Battlefield 4 and Destiny were all part of Sony's presentation), and that doesn't really get me excited. And I really wanted Uncharted 4 gameplay, The Last Guardian and maybe even Heavenly Sword II . Just not enough of a wow factor, despite the quality games.

As for WHY we didn't see Guardian…well…

Just another lame excuse from Sony, as far as I'm concerned. Sony boss Scott Rohde says they'll "show it when it's ready" but I can't count how many times I've seen that exact same statement.

Seriously, in the past five or six years, I think I've seen and heard those very words at least half a dozen times, if not more. Now, I have no doubt the game is still in development. There's no incentive for Sony to lie. At the same time, you can't keep doing this. You can't keep saying the game is progressing and never divulge even a single solitary scrap of information . I mean, not even confirming that it's now in the works for the PlayStation 4? Not one screenshot? Not one comment from one of the designers regarding the project's status?

The bottom line is that this usually translates to bad news. There's no reason whatsoever to withhold this information, besides the obvious: The game isn't even close to ready, and there are more problems and snafus than they want the public to know about. We've already heard plenty of rumors about internal strife within the Guardian team, and Sony hasn't exactly shot those rumors down. No, I think bad news is looming on the horizon…

Personal gaming update

Entwined is a colorful, vibrant, feel-good game, but there just isn't enough to it. My girlfriend and I might have some fun playing it, but that's about it. I'm working my way toward the end of Wolfenstein: The New Order and when I'm done, I'm starting a new game in Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag . I've been away from it for too long; I don't remember where I am or what I was doing, and I'd rather just start over. There's nothing coming out until October that I really want to play, anyway, so I've got time. After that, Watch Dogs is on the list.

I plan to wait on finishing Grand Theft Auto V ; I'm just gonna grab the PS4 version when it comes out, transfer my save data over, and finish with the better experience. 🙂 Oh, I should also mention that I'm currently playing and enjoying the Destiny alpha (impressions coming soon). It's not really my cup of tea but I think Bungie has done a stellar job so far and if this is only the alpha, the final product should be mighty impressive.

I feel like Destiny is a mash of borderlands and halo. Its definitely has the potential to be a massive game.

It doesn't look anything like those games. Please stop comparing the mssterpieces of games that are the Souls series to those buttonmashers.

Destiny Alphas alright. Started playing it when I got home yesterday. Exactly what I expected from it. Haven't had the time to do anything else though.

Also, seeing Bloodborne made everything else irrelevant. thats the only game in my crosshairs at the moment and the only one I want.

Please stop trying to lecture me on a subject with which I'm QUITE familiar.

And if you button-mashed your way through God of War and Darksiders, you either had no clue what you were doing, or you didn't bother to learn more about those combat mechanics.

Sounds like you think your opinion = fact…and that's never true.

Also he didn't compare them to the Souls games.

Hey World, when you get your head outta Ben's ass maybe you can make a connection. He compared Bloodborne to Darksiders, and Bloodborne has been compared to the Souls games by it's creator (since you were unable to make that simple connection). Sorry Ben, I've been playing Souls games since Demon's Souls on day 1, and it is a majority of my gaming… the Souls crowd does not take kindly to having an amazing experience compared to mediocrity. The emotions involved in these games cannot compare to any game you can get through by button mashing (regardless of combat system). I'm a big God of War fan too, but sorry it's no comparison.

And I don't take kindly to people trying to tell me what I can and can't compare a game to. Has nothing to do with "speaking his mind;" has everything to do with telling me what I should and I shouldn't do.

And by the way, anybody who wants to call Bloodborne "mediocrity" at this stage is just a moron. As if we could possibly judge at this point.

Demon's Souls fans are starting to get on my nerves; the game wasn't even that great.

Souls games were fun. They weren't exactly revolutionary, though. It's like Elder Scrolls, but inferior, more difficult, less critically acclaimed, a whole 10 points lower on meta, and less accessible. (and therefore, less popular) It has a loyal following who love the games, and that's great. But let's be realistic here…

Sigh… As far as I understand, only the multiplayer progress is transferable to next gen GTA V. Not single player. Unless by progression they mean single player too? But how will that be possible when going from Xbox 360 -> Ps4?

From Rockstar newswire.

"All new content and gameplay created since the launch of Grand Theft Auto Online, including an extensive array of new Jobs, an arsenal of new weapons, scores of new vehicles, new properties and player customizations will also be available for the PlayStation 4 system, Xbox One and PC with much more to come. In addition, the current community of players will have the ability to transfer their Grand Theft Auto Online characters and progression to their choice of PlayStation 4, Xbox One or PC."

I was really pleased with this year's E3. I liked Sony's show a lot. And pretty much everything they talked about or displayed had me interested.
While no mega announcements happened, I'm sorta thinking that's just how things are going these days. It's hard to keep these huge AAA titles under wraps. And if and when they do get revealed they're so early in development we're sure to see them at one or two more E3's before they see release. So as it is, games like MGS5, Batman, Order, Far Cry 4, and Uncharted 4 all had me pretty much floored with excitement. LBP3 is a big plus. THe PS4 needs more family friendly content so I'm happy it's coming. Bloodborne has me interested. From Software has really risen in the ranks over the years and for Sony to have commissioned a custom PS4 version of a gamer's game I think that deserves lots of praise. I also totally dug AC Unity, and the Crew has my interest piqued.

But then there was the unexpected treats that E3 gave me this year. The Destiny alpha, for one. Which I love and will play on day one. Then there's the PS Now beta I got in. It's funny, just the day before I got into the PS Now beta I tried the Steam home streaming feature on my laptop. Basically, my powerhouse PC streams the game to my laptop. Sadly, it was disappointing. I was like 15 feet away from my desktop and my laptop couldn't hold a steady stream. It deflated any interest I had in streaming for games. Then I tried PS Now the next day. Surpsignly, the experience was smooth and very acceptable. Yes, it had lots of problems booting games that I tried accessing (still could never get MX vs ATV to work or Lanstatia or whatever the anime'ish looking game was called). That needs to be fixed.
Moving back to my precious Destiny. I don't know what it is. To me it just feels like a perfect blend of elements. I can't describe it but I really feel the magical awe feeling while playing it. I really can't wait. I haven't been able to say that in a long time.
I've taken my shooter guy to the max level for the Alpha. And that's level 8. I've gotten some decent equipment and I've played all of the co-op missions, including the Devil's Lair. Me and two other random guys took that mission down in about an hour. It was a lot of fun, if not a little long winded. But still cool. It felt nice getting back to the open fields and just randomly taking jobs and exploring.
I spent a little time in the Crucible. It felt solid enough for FPS shootouts. Can't say the Crucible death match stuff is a huge draw for me at this point, but I'm glad it's there.

PGU: other than Destiny, been playing lots of Transistor. The endless combination of ability mix-ups keeps it really fun.

Hey Ben, Ive noticed you mention Heavenly Sword 2 a few times…has Sony ever said anything about this game? Or is it just something you personally would like to see happen?

It's just something a lot of people would like to see happen. Oh and some "insider" said it was going to be at E3.

E3 was just okay. Destiny alpha is sort of okay but so far also highly generic.

I've got some games going that keep bugging me to play them. I might have to sell Drakengard 3 after I finish it. It's so broken I don't think I could play it again some day. Kinda considering selling Second Son just to get a few bucks and get it the hell out of my collection, fckn light version of a good game written for a collection of idiots… all it did was piss me off with its loss of traditional inFamous gameplay.

I wouldn't say Destiny is "generic" for a shooter. What else do you want it to do? It's not Bioshock. 🙂

Playing the Destiny alpha – pretty damn good. Also playing Battlefield Hardline – which is just ok.

E3 had plenty for my taste (shooters!) In addition to the above, im planning on selling a kidney to buy FarCry4, COD Advanced Warfare and the Halo Master Chief collection.

Yeah no Last Guardian was a bummer, but at least it's still potential thing. Pretty much vaporware, but still ware nevertheless. Really wanted to hear more about GG's new IP. IS anyone else CONCERNED that Booldborn could be hard ass hell? Just can't get Dark Souls out of the picture. No Mans Sky reminds me of Minecraft. A sort of AAA Indi game. What with the re-creating level design system. Anyone else? It wasn't the best show ever, but it's still E3. Always nice to see the Gaming community come together for one week a year. Sure would like to go one of these year. In fact if I ever, for whatever reason, took a vacation in Japan I would purposefully go during the TGS.

PGU: Limbo is awesome. It challenging but amazingly not frustrating. Game well done! Wolfenstien is also awesome. The campaign goes on for ever. That's a lot for today's FPS!

And now to watch the Phantom Pain and Uncharted trailer a few more times.

$onys E3 presser presents perfectly whats wrong with the company.
first off why the blazing hell would you save the big games till right at the end?
make people sit through a hour of snoozefest, just for 20 minutes or so of decent content?
seriously?
i know they want to go out with a bang, but that does not mean 1 hour of snoozefest!

secondly, is this playstation, the name that is synonymous and became famous because of amazing big budget exclusives like GOW, uncharted, GT, ect, ect?
or is this the press conference for steam?
no, seriously, im starting to believe $onys been bought out by valve or something!
why the &^%$ would you turn up to E3 and reserve 60% of the time of your presser for f*cking indie games!?
next ferraris going to turn up to the geneva motor show and dedicate most of their time to talk about their partnership with oakly!
no one goes to one of the biggest car events of the year to hear about f*cking sun glasses!
just like no one goes to E3 to hear about f*cking indie games!

thirdly, is this E3, the convention famous for game reveals, or some hollywood bullsh*t show?
sorry, but i could not give a flying f*ck about pages!
great some big hollywood bigshot is bringing his comicbook series into a TV series for ps4, big f*cking woopty do hoo!
this is f*cking E3, not comicon!

and usual $ony cock waving too, ooooooo we have this many accounts, oooooo this many of our consoles are connected to the net.
im sorry, is this a E3 press conference, or a stockholders meeting?

its sad, $ony didnt have enough content to fill there show so they had to turn to cockamamy babble, and comicon news to try buff their show.
this has got to be their worst conference in years!
not only was there a massive lack of first party games, dunno why shu even bothered to turn up!
but there was also so little games to show they had to buff the show with crappy indie games, cock waving, and comic book bullsh*t!

im really enjoying watch dogs so far.
while its a bit disappointing it does not feel as alive and well made as GTAV, its funny GTAV on ps3 actually feels allot more next gen than watch dogs does.
but that said its still a enjoyable game.
one thing im really enjoying about watch dogs is the way the missions are laid out.
its nice for a change to see the events unfolding as you complete a mission you have a good sense of whats going to happen next.
most games every mission feels like a new game, you start a objective, you finish it, thats it its done.
each mission does not really feel like a followup from the previous, every mission feels separated.
with watch dogs though you get a real sense of whats happening which i really like.
its like each act starts with a grand goal, than mini objectives, and because of that you know what each next mission is roughly going to offer.
its good because it makes you look forward to it.
like last night for instance i finally got into rossi freemont and completed that section, and then damien rings up and now i know what the next missions going to be.
its nice to feel the missions are connected, it gives you a sense of progress, a bigger goal to work towards.
it actually makes you a lot more interested in the story, even though its about as indepth as a coke dog!

its a shame the story is not as good as it should be, it could of been really interesting!
the history of aiden and damien, the history of CTOS and its creators, the history of deadsec, and even the gangs.
everything is just there, why, how, who knows who cares it just is!
one thing i hate about most games these days, there stories have so many holes and there just so hard to believe and get engrossed in because everything just is.
nothings explained, everythings assumed.
really hurts the believability of the story, and if you dont believe the story how can you enjoy it?
ME 2s story was so encompassing and amazing because it was so believable, it made you believe that somewhere out in that big dark bliss there is sheppard and his team.
it really did make you believe everything about it, and it did that by building in backstory.
everythings explained, nothings assumed.
the back story missions for your crew a perfect example, all of a sudden you care about these people so when there safety is in danger you really care.
its thanks to that back story that made the story so captivating.
minus that backstory, it would of fell flat on its a$$!
i just wish more developers would understand that, and put allot more effort into the back story of things and making them believable!

"make people sit through a hour of snoozefest, just for 20 minutes or so of decent content?"

You once again prove why you have no idea what you are talking about most of the time.

The thing you just complained about, is exactly why they did it. If they put the big games at the start of the conference everyone would just switch off afterwards.

I don't get why people want to see The Last Guardian when it clearly isn't ready.

They already made the mistake once in 2009 to announce the game before it was really ready to be shown, and now that they realize that the game still isn't ready to be shown, people want to see an unfinished game, just to complain that it doesn't look very good.

Why can't we just leave them alone until they are ready to show a more complete product, since they clearly have learned their lesson the hard way on showing something too soon?
