Contrary to any rumors you may have digested over the past few months, Sony remains firm on the subject: they're not planning to release a new console any time soon.
During an IGN interview , SCEA President Jack Tretton said to focus on a new piece of hardware right now would prove "distracting" for the company. For now, they're focus is squarely on the PS3 and the new PlayStation Vita. Said Tretton:
"Right now, we're focused on PlayStation 3, and I've got another platform (PlayStation Vita) to get out the door in seven days, so I don't want to be thinking about trying to launch new technology any time soon. I want to focus all our energy on our console business, which is really just hitting its stride, and Vita, which really deserves a dedicated push from us."
He then went on to say he wouldn't want to talk about any new console hardware this year, so the rumor that said all three next-generation systems would on display at E3 2012 appears to be false. Tretton echoes recently promoted Sony boss Kaz Hirai's statements that the PS3 is really hitting its stride, and it has plenty of life left.
Well, that's all fine by us. The PS3 could go another three or four years as far as we're concerned.
Relatively speaking, PSP released a good year and half before the PS3 hit the scene. So judging that this gen has more value than the last, I would assume at least another 2 years or more of time before the PS4 arrives.
Fine by me, I have so little free time these days that a standard setting new console would most definately be a distraction within the space of 2 years.
This is kinda what several of us have been saying. Vita needs at least 1 clear year to launch fully. And with the sluggish start in Japan, it's imperative that his whole year be for the PS3 and Vita, to allow Vita to establish itself. I don't think we will hear of PS4 until next year now.
Ben, any chance of banning this foul mouthed child?
Dude this is a playstation website so that's what we come to this site to talk about all things Sony. Many of us have multiple consoles including myself, but I don't come to this site expecting to here about what Microsoft or Nintendo. This site is called PSX all things playstation dude. With that said you want to be banned somebody grant him his wish.
I can't put my finger on why Ben would want to ban you.
LOL! If it was banned for not liking the Vita that is not right. I come to this site because it's so pro-Playstation which is great! So what if Ben is slower than IGN. IGN has a massive force. As far as I know there are only a few people running this site. Ben has to play games, review them and look for news and get it on the net. It all takes time. Last I checked most jobs are an 8 hour affair. I am guessing Ben works way over 8 hours a day. Love this site

Ben works a lot more than 8 a day for PSX, of that I am certain. I think it would be fair to call it a labor of love.
VB, time to go and play with yourself and leave Ben alone!
Q!

I never thought a PS4 would be announced this year. Mainly because of the Vita.
I'm 99% sure though that there will be an announcement for a next-gen Sony console next year, and that it'll launch at the same time as the new MS console. R&D on a new PS4 has definitely started a long time ago.
Looking forward to that, I want a new Playstation home console.

I think your prognosis is spot on, and I also am starting to really look forward to the idea of a new Sony console in the next couple years. Still enjoying PS3 a lot, but I always love seeing what's next. These guys can make vast sums of money by making jaw-dropping games that reimagine the way we play. Guys across the industry consistently blow my mind. I don't doubt Sony is cooking up something FIERCE that will once again make everyone start clamoring for the next generation.
If Sony was smart (which they sometimes are) the next Playstation will be a design that does 2 things. 1 it must build on the ground work done with the PS3, this ensures easier transition for developers. 2 the design must already be complete and working, and flexible enough that if MS decides to being a new console to E3 2013, so can Sony. In other words, they need to be in a position to be ready at the drop of a hat, and yet be able to evolve the specification to remain current with hardware.
The thing is, Microsoft might see an opportunity at this year's E3 to steal the show with a new console. Sony sounds like it doesn't have one, and regardless of product quality, MS likes to be there first. There was one PS4 news story last year that leaves me feeling hopeful regardless. The story was that the PS4 design was essentially done, but the system was on the back burner for now as it's not needed. If that's the case, Sony may be ready to jump if MS does.
I would still bet on an E3 2012 reveal (Sony always denies right up to the moment of truth), but I can't argue with the logic of keeping focus on PS3 and PSV. I do think Sony wouldn't (and shouldn't) let M$ hog the "next-gen" spotlight for very long.
The current architecture is really complex.
I've had the privilege of working with the PS3, as well as the 360. The 360 is definitely more accessible.
Rendering on the PS3 is a challenge.
The way memory is paged is complex.
Due to the 8 SPEs (6 if you count only the ones available to the developer) being bridged with the PPC, it requires explicitly programmed methodologies on memory hierarchy and parallel processing. That's where the bigger problems are.
The thing is, in the end you have much more freedom with the PS3, at the cost of more technical work having to be done.
Microsoft just provides a very accessible, and powerful, SDK that allows developers to focus more on the creative side rather than the technical side.
Also, the architecture on the 360 is very much like an architecture found on a PC.
Though, truth is, developers made PS3 development out to be much worse than it really is.
Still, developers are getting more comfortable as time passes, so it makes perfect sense that Sony sticks to a similar architecture if they don't want to scare off developers from the start.
This is kind of the blessing and curse of the PS Vita depending on which side you're on. Sony backing the Vita will apparently push back any plans for the PS3's successor. Even though the Vita intrigues me I'm not the biggest fan of handheld gaming, which is why I kind of wish Sony would concentrate all its resources on the PS3 this year and next, and then the PS4 in either 2013 or 2014.
This is good news I'm not ready for a ps4 yet.
Makes sense, though I hope Sony is not playing catch up with the XBox successor. Delaying the announcement of PS4 wouldn't necessarily cause that though. They could announcement PS4 relatively early NEXT year, and have it out my year's end if they really felt the need. Who knows if the Xbox "720" will be out by late 2013 or not, but I'm sure Sony won't forget the advantage Microsoft had this gen being the first ones out of the gate. Sony's done an admirable job closing the gap with Microsoft, but no way do they want to put themselves in such an underdog position again.
If Microsoft does have an Xbox 720, does that indicate the graphics standard of their system?
::innocent look::
Distraction or not they need to be ready to go when MS does period. I tend to think the console is always the priority anyways. You can't risk pulling resources for what has been described as as shrinking handheld market for what is a booming console market. I'm pretty confident they do both anyways.
Sony needs to take Microsoft head on next time so the don't fall behind again. MS has a ton of momemtum in NA…to let that go unchecked for the sake of a handheld is risky and it's putting Sony in a tough spot that will make them have to fight another UPHILL fight again. If they are smart and have indeed learned lessons this gen they will not repeat that market strategy.
In fact Sony is already on record stating it would be "undesirable" to let MS get a jump again on them again. They will be ready to go when MS launches their next system. No way they will forget the way this gen played out and what MS was able to do do them or the reasons why it happened. If Sony fans see that I'm pretty sure they see it too.
I agree with all those statements. Sony does need to be smart about the next-gen console race so that they don't fall behind. They can't afford to do that. Which is why part of me believes they are making these statements because the Vita is launching next week and they want consumers focused on that for the time being.
I can only dream of a Head to Head Console launch between Sony and Microsoft !!!
FORGET SAME YEAR…..Same Month and Day would be too Bad @$$
What would be nice is if the PS4 is secretly ready to launch in case Microsoft announces the new Xbox, so Sony can go "Oh Xbox 720, weelll viewers here's the PS4!"
I agree also but really boils down what the specs will be in the next Xbox. This time around Sony could manage to get away with it.

All we need is a NEW XMB or Operating System somthing Fast like a mutha……
(Somthing on the lines of what the Vita Has or even like the of Music Unlimited page)
They can't change the XMB (on PS3) much or the premium themes would be rendered useless (and people would s*** bricks).
Also, the PS3 probably doesn't have enough (dedicated) RAM to run an OS like the Vita's, but the PS4 certainly will.
I don't mind either way, but I can't help but feel Sony has accepted what MS dd this gen and doesn't care to compete. What I mean is Sony fell behind this gen releasig the PS3 after the 360. Now if MS releases another Xbox and Sony doesn't compete, they will fall even farther behind. Yes the PS3 is really strarting to turn around for Sony but to compete you have to release something competitive.
…and with that said, I think the next Xbox won't be much of an upgrade. It may have a little more oomph, but I'm not sure it'll be a huge leap. Idk though. I'm not a technical expert, and don't know all the technology available. But id like to think thats what Sony realizes and that's why they are not talking bout a PS4 right now. Because the PS3 is the future and present of the technology out there… For now. Speculation of course.
For the record, Vallarta is gone, and it had absolutely nothing to do with his view on the Vita.
As most of you have seen, flaming and acting like a douchebag in general are the reasons. I let him get away with calling too many of you names for too long. Apologies.
Always thought he was a bit of ….yeh.
I guess I got here to late, what exactly happened, well give me some clues will be better?
The guy with a *naked girl hiding her stuff with Nintendo products* profile pic has been terminated due to his bad behavior. He was warned yet continued to be a bother to the whole universe by showing the full colors of his Nintentastes dissing pretty much everything that had to do with Sony news. Especially when related to the Vita.
He also had an unstable mind and might have been a bit deficient (that might be the reason why Ben tolerated him for so long :P)
Guess I'll only miss the girl XD lol
Pretty much sums it up I think. His last offence was commited in this topic and we shall remember him as… (out of inspiration)

Well done Ben.
I meant that I saw him here alot and yah he didn't fit right with what he was saying. Anyways good to know, if someone likes to play around here and start junk, it's good he or she will get banned.
ah man the 1 day i`m to busy to check the news right away and i miss all the action story of my life
Now while I am loving my PS3, I would accept the PS4.
Good news! I'm happy with my ps3.
I think everyone needs to stop saying the reason Sony got behind at the beginning of this generation is because of M$ releasing the 360 first. The PS3 was way too high at launch and there was not enough top notch software. Even a diehard Sony fan like me waited until the PS3 dropped $100 and had more games. Yes for what it cost it was worth the price but how do you sell that to the clueless american public???
Saying M$ got ahead because they launched first and will be ahead again is the panicky jumping to conclusions answer. There are a lot of factors to think of when it comes to launching a console and I believe M$ knows they wont get as lucky next generation. Sony will learn from their mistakes and MS only has a few bebe guns compared to Sony's full arsenal of exclusives
I believe whoever has the strongest software at launch with the most hardware potential but still at a reasonable price will start off the best. However, if MS launches their console at 400, Sony damn well better do the same or cheaper!

Yeah, another is bluray itself. It is now the new standard for film, that wasn't the case when the ps3 launched. That created uncertainty in itself around the ps3 even though it was a gaming system.
Soul,
You are underestimating the impact of the 360 becoming the "go-to" console for members of the gaming media. The head start (combined with Achievements) played a huge role in determining the bias in coverage that still persists, which has in turn no doubt affected the lemming-like behavior among teenagers.

Im not underestimating the what M$ did right at all. All Im saying is there are more factors to Sony starting behind this gen, than M$' head start release.
Price, poor launch software and now that you mentioned it, M$ has done wonder's manipulating the american public and media. How else could they have barely gotten a scratch on them from the rrod fiasco and now live accounts being hacked?? Their tons and tons of money. Its absolutely unfair is what it is
well said by Sony and rightfully received by me, so the PS4 hype can calm down and go away for now, which to me, is really a distraction for the status quo.
said many times and say again, let developers focus more on producing quality games, NOT again forced to learn how to shift to a newer platform, which will lead to an eternal struggle of trial and error — catch up the the new technology, and when just about to catch up, newer technology came and again need to catch up, and so forth — and this is really annoying to me.

This is really awesome news! They'll be able to size up the new Xbox, and possibly make improvements with what they know is going to be on that new console.
Btw, spotted a small grammar/spelling error: "For now, they're focus is squarely on the PS3 and the new PlayStation Vita." I believe "they're" should be "their". Just helpin' out 🙂
Finally, this makes sense. PS4 talk for the most part seems just rumour, conjecture and just because.
next E3 before then is a little too early.
CD project red the guys who did the witcher 2 say there working on several next gen games and they expect the systems to be out 2014.
sounds about right to me, a E3 reveal next year with a late 2013, early 2014 release.
im starting to think early in the year is more likely, high priced consoles are not the things people buy for chrissy presents.
and older folk, folk their aimed at cant afford them at chrissy because they spent all their money on presents for the family.
E3 will be epic this year, but i'm not ready for a PS4 i'm really enjoying the PS3 and hoping soon my Vita if i get that i'm totally poor but we'll see.
I've been saying this forever, 2014-2016 is PS4 launch, yet the media creates and continues on false hype. leave the PS3 alone, its perfectly fine for a good few years. Start complaining in 2016, till then enjoy the PS3.
They are probably working on a ps4 now but will not say anything about it until the next xbox shows pictures then a release date. The new ps4 would have to be designed to replace the CPU or Video CPU quickly just in case xbox comes with CPU and Video that PS4 can beat. I would prefer that they start development on a next console now to prevent problems that might occur after it is released.
I said it before and I'll say it again… The PS3 is still doing good so there is no need to push in a PS4… But it'll be cool though lol
