The PlayStation 4 is mine and I suppose I should probably talk about it. 😉
Firstly, let me say that I have not experienced any of the myriad of problems that seem to be affecting some new owners. I'm hoping those issues aren't as widespread as they seem to be. Now, onto the good stuff:
The Package
Well, at least we've got an HDMI cable this time around. Of course, you basically need one if you want to appreciate everything the PlayStation 4 has to offer. I also liked to see longer USB cables for the controller, because those tiny ones that came with the PS3 were just plain silly. Then you've got the basics, like the power cord and the controller. I especially like the three extra bonuses packed in: The 30 free days of plus, the 30-day Music Unlimited trial, and the $10 in PlayStation Store credit. These are the kinds of extras that make you feel a little better about dropping $400+.
That all being said, I still can't figure out why they can't toss just one game in there. Make it a downloadable voucher for Resogun or something, I don't care. I guess I'm just old-fashioned and I remember the days when all new game machines came with a game, but I can't understand why it's just impossible these days. Lastly, the earbud they've packed in there is a touch lame, but I suppose it's better than nothing, right?
Grade: B+
Aesthetic appeal
I do like the design of the new system. It's a little smaller than I had anticipated; I was actually a little surprised when they handed me the box. Then when I took it out, I appreciated the slick yet simple design, which is slightly futuristic without making a big fuss about it. It's nicely and logically appointed, and I'm glad they kept the USB ports in the front. I don't really care much about the electronic light on the system – or the one on the controller – but I suppose that spruces things up a bit. As always, I would prefer to have multiple color options but hey, I have no issue with the default black. Classic.
It's also relatively light and quiet, and it looks particularly appealing in a black entertainment center. I'd have to say that out of all the PlayStation models we've seen so far, I might like this one best.
Grade: A-
Ease of use and accessibility
Let me start by saying that I really don't like flashy bells and whistles that don't rank high on the functionality list. In other words, flashy for the sake of flashy doesn't do anything for me. I have too many extra brain cells to be swayed by something shiny. That's why I happen to love that the PS4's User Interface is refined and mostly intuitive. Much like the exterior of the console, it's extremely modern without being in your face. It's smooth and easy to navigate and each function and application is within easy reach. Sifting through the menus is easy as pie and getting the system set up – which could've been annoying – is rather painless.
The bottom line is this- I know consoles are just PCs these days. I get it. But I put a premium on accessibility and quickness; I still want my console to be straightforward, regardless of how advanced it is. I want to put a game in and be playing in seconds. And you know what? The PS4 lets me do that, even with uninstalled games. Love it.
Grade: A
Controller
The Dual Shock 4 took a little getting used to, and I still say that all touchpads are nothing more than unnecessary gimmicks, but this is a great new controller. The concave triggers and analog sticks top my "most liked" list, and it's sorta cool that there's a separate button for Options now. I was also pleasantly surprised with the built-in speaker (first experienced when I picked up an Audiolog in Killzone: Shadow Fall ); its clear and adds an interesting dynamic. You're so used to sound coming from elsewhere that to have a voice emanate from your hands is creepy…but sweet. And having the earphone jack in front of the controller helps a great deal, too. Everything within easy reach!
Holding the Dual Shock 4 feels comfortable and natural. I really don't plan on using the Share button that often, but it's fantastic for those who consider themselves to be more of a "social gamer." Still don't like the touchpad, no matter how you slice it, but that's about it.
Grade: A-
Launch software lineup
This is difficult for me. On the one hand, I want to look at the giant third-party games like Battlefield 4 , Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag , Call of Duty: Ghosts , Need for Speed: Rivals , and the sports titles (several of which are excellent), and go- "Yep, awesome." After all, we almost never see so many high-profile titles at the launch of a new console. On the other hand, I have to acknowledge that they're multiplatform and hey, they've already debuted on older consoles. Hence, they weren't really made specifically for the new generation and in some ways, that shows. Furthermore, I'm not blown away by the first-party software, which is mildly disappointing.
Shadow Fall is great fun but it's not the mind-blowing, white-knuckle next-gen experience I was hoping for, and Knack definitely feels a tad light in terms of gameplay. And while I know everyone is "oohing and aahing" over the visuals in the new Killzone , I have to say, I expected more. It's beautiful, no doubt, but I did expect more from the character models and animations. Really, this lineup desperately needed inFamous: Second Son or something like that. I'd even take a new Resistance .
Grade: C+
Availability
It seems that all retailers were easily able to fulfill all pre-orders, which is impressive in and of itself, but many stores actually had extras to sell. I still can't get over that. It's not just that the PS3 was horrendous in this category when it first launched; it's that historically, you never saw extra new game machines floating around on launch day. Most times, you had to wait months before you could buy one right off the shelves. This is so huge for Sony and consumers, although I imagine it won't give them much of an edge, because Xbox One availability should be pretty high, too. I've even heard of stores having extra machines to immediately replace any defective units, and that's pretty damn special.
Grade: A+
Reliability
The grade can only be assigned based on what we've seen thus far. It's concerning to see so many "red line of death" reports , but we haven't yet verified the cause (or viability) of those complaints. On the other hand, there were some recorded issues before that as well; users have had problems with the HDMI output and the Blu-Ray drive, it seems. However, I think it's vital that for the time being, we remember Sony's official statement on the matter. Now, that ".4%" could rise over the next few days, which would be unfortunate. But for the most part, I'm not seeing enough actual evidence to really worry. Seems pretty solid, relatively speaking.
Still, it's all pending for now.
Grade: B-
Power, potential and capability
Remember, this is based purely on the launch day results and impressions. Based on what I've seen thus far, and comparing this against the specs of the machine and what developers have said this year, I'd have to say the PS4 is in a good position. It especially benefited from being so accessible to designers; the much simpler architecture made things so much easier for game makers. This means developers can tap into more of the system's power right off the bat, and Killzone is a good example of lotsa pretty pictures. Furthermore, the many reports concerning full 1080p HD resolution for PS4 versions of games are encouraging. It appears that Xbox One gamers won't be enjoying 1080p HD nearly as often as PS4 users.
But looking down the road, we can't forget that there's a flip side to the current accessibility. This means the machine, despite it's great capability, might start to show its age sooner than any other PlayStation platform before it. Then again, maybe there's enough juice to keep developers occupied for many years. I just don't expect a similar drastic leap in graphics that we've seen in past generations, that's all.
Grade: B
Overall
All in all, I think the positives definitely outweigh the negatives by a large margin. The Dual Shock 4 is great, the availability is awesome, it's aesthetically sleek, and I love the new UI. This overrides some of the obvious problems, such as the lacking launch lineup and the potential reliability issues. Had we had a few more good games at launch and a few less reports about defective systems, I would've handed out the A- with no further reservations. As it is-
Grade: B+
Let me be the first to say (literally) i agree with you're impressions. Got my PS4 yesterday at 6:00PM eastern time (yes that early.. woot!!). Just wanted to also chime in on the first party software. Its Lame! Yep, i said it, Lame!. The last generation was the longest in console gaming history, and all we got to show for it was two games, and some indies, Really? I know by March or April we will have a nice refresh, but until then i doubt my PS4 will be used. Sony improved on everything that plagued them last generation, except software, which lets be honest is the most important. Some day or some generation we will have a steady supply of games at the beginning, sadly not this generation. Here's hoping microsoft's lineup (which cost allot of money) doesn't give them an early lead… They do got the games people want… right out of the gate!
The fact of the matter is that R&D work on next gen begins not long after the launch of last gen. Studios begin game development just as soon prototype dev kits are made available (and sometimes earlier). However, due to the race between consoles to be the first, launches don't wait for developers (who are working on increasingly tight and demanding deadlines and budgets). So, a number of studios are selected and supported to meet those timelines, and at the same time, usher in the next gen, come hell or high water, and they will cut scope to do so. This is why we have a couple dozen games, give or take, for the launch window, but hundreds officially announced and in development. This is why console launches rarely hit the ground running, and need time to gain momentum. Considering this, looking back in the history of videogaming, this has been a VERY healthy launch. Not too much hype, but plenty of promise and a nice offering out of the gate.

So with the PS+ subscription that comes with the PS4 resogun is free. Im saying this because ive never been a PS+ member and to instantly be greeted with 3 (that I know of) free games, thats awesome. Totally worth it.
Resogun and Contrast are both free for +.
Yeah theres another and theres more to come.
I don't consider those games "free" when a Plus subscription is required. Yes, the first 30 days are free but that's it, and it's still a prerequisite to playing the games in question.
I was not bringing it up to argue that there are free games. Merely that the PS+ subscription is almost a necessity to the PS4 and by purchasing it you do in fact get rewarded without having to put more money out. I was very surprised – not because I was oblivious to whay the PS+ entailed – when I logged into the PSN and had games jist sitting there waiting for me to download. Makes me wish I had subscribed far ealier.
But Ben your problem was that there is no games included out of the box.
This is not true, those free PS+ games are technically free, and technically included out of the box with that free 30-day sub.
Just because you don't consider facts to be true, doesn't mean they aren't. By your logic, there are NO free games on PS+, ever.

your review is excellent Ben! The americans are damm lucky to get the ps4 first….
Thanks for the review.
About what I expected; nothing bad per se, but it seems you are not blown away. As you say, once the games (especially anticipated exclusives) start rolling in, the excitement is bound to increase. I'll hold off a bit and let the chips fall before grabbing one for myself.
The unit itself is amazing specially the feature where you can watch people playing live games. That to me is a system seller on its own because you can now see game previews LiVE and decide if you want to buy it. Now the controller in the other hand IDK. I know I'm probably in the minority here but it makes my hands sweat and I'm guessing its cause the texture in the back of it. Now let's talk analog sticks, there is times when I feel that they are great but then there is times when I hate them to death. I find my fingers slipping from that concave in design. So I either have weird hands or something is not right. Other than that however it's an amazing experience especially being #1 in KZ lol
I got mine delivered from Amazon at 1:30 pm eastern. Big surprise because normal deliveries arrive around 4 or later! No hookup or download problems, it zipped right along. Did notice that people on your friends list are not aware that you are online. Maybe I haven't set something up correctly, not sure. Love it so far, hopefully no problems will crop up. I am slightly disappointed in Killzone, I was expecting more in the graphics department. Anyways Imma outta here, got some shooting to do!!
I'm on plus on my PS3 and I don't regret it one bit. In fact I got too used to it to let it go now.
Go plus!
Thanks for the rundown Ben, good stuff and even though I don't have mine this pretty much agrees with the conceptualization I've put together in my mind over these many months.
I found Killzone for $45 so I'm gonna grab it just so I have something to play on it. Plus the 2 year warranty at Amazon was a reasonable price in case these issues are real.

World on the PSN you can get a 36 month protection plan for $49.99 and $59.99 also.
And I think youll enjoy Killzone, im not impressed with the reviews at all because the game is pretty damg good. Its a high 8 so far in my book.
word
From what we are seeing on the internet, you will need that 2 year warranty with Amazon.
Not only are most of the defective units reported to be Amazon stock, but there are many many reports some with pictures as proof, to show how bad Amazon packaged the PS4.
There was one pic I seen, where a PS4 was in a box more than twice it's size, with a TINY amount of padding just sprinkled in there, which basically did nothing. That same guy also had the "Blue Light of Death" issue.
Amazon is highly regarded in most cases, and I am sure that this is just the result of huge consumer demand, but if it is one of the causes then Amazon need to explain this.
This launch was TERRIBLE imo. YOu could not log onto the PSN network for quite some time.
BF 4 was and still is a TOTAL DISASTER! YOu could not log on without getting this error CE-34878-0. This error would not let you play online OR OFFLINE! Guess what feature that you now cant play for BF 4? THE 64 PLAYER MODE! Still not working as of a few hours ago!
The software overall is no more than a C+.
My ps4 is making quite a racket with the discs sometimes.
Go search the internet and you will see about these very same problems.
Apparently we all just have to live with the fact that nothing which requires servers will ever work on day 1.
You are looking for problems that aren't there. Biased as you are I am surprised you bought one. I am surprised you are still on this site. Reading your posts, the same with he cannot be named because he has no name, drops my iq by about 100 points. Just leave. Seriously!
So because you couldn't immediately access the Network the launch sucks?
Some care. Others like me say, "Who gives a sh**?" Too subjective, yes?
Of course you couldn't log onto the PSN. Do you know how many people were trying to access the PSN at one time? I don't, but considering 1 million consoles were moved on day 1, I would say quite a large number.
BF4 has many bugs, this is not related to the console itself, and is the sole cause of BF4. DICE is looking into BF4's many issues, including the PS4 specific issues, however considering DICE was just the victim of a massive DDOS attack, that has put the bug fixes back a bit.
Shadowfall looks so good. That lighting has me in shivers.
Good review Ben. I won't argue anything because this is opinion. I would personally say I like my PS4 much more than the ps3 when I got it back at launch. I was in 3rd grade when ps2 came out so I have no idea whether I cared about all that stuff or not. I just remember playing Gauntlet Dark Legacy and Final Fantasy.
Well first off Congratulations to every one snagged a PS4 on day one. I didn't pre order one because I didn't think I would be home or if I even wanted one day one. When I found out I would be home I decided to go for an old fashion day one store buy. The local Walmart is all we have up here and it doesn't open til 6AM. I called to double check about this. Well turns out I woke up too early and went to bed to early. There was a midnight launch and they just didn't tell everyone. So more bitter defeat was had on my part. Oh well. Now I have some time finish up with other stuff.
I hope no one here suffers the historical horrors of launch models. My local PS4 owners… maybe a fail or two…
Other than the usual early issues, I have no complaints. The console and the interface are beautiful. The controller is great and I love being able to watch people playing games and getting feedback from them. I probably won't play much of the PS4 until February/March when Infamous: Second Son, MLB '14 and DriveClub all arrive, though. I'll play more on the PC until then.
Resogun is a heck of a game and Flower has never looked better. Still haven't played Contrast yet. My PS+ was recognized as promised so I'm good until January 7.
I thought you'd do a muti media section which would amount to anything Sony approved eg.blu-ray,DVD & payed for media streaming like netflix ect.
I hear as of launch that the PS4 doesn't play MP3 or MP4 files nor does it have a wireless media sever ala PS3,it also doesn't do external HDD or USB flash drives(except for updates).
These all could be added by a patch or two at a later date but considering how Sony likes to protect their company's wider interests eg.music,tv & movie studios & its fondness for anti piracy measures mean these patches may never come leaving the PS4 as a pure gaming machine more or less.
Only time will tell.

All indications are that those will be coming.
Shuhei Yoshida himself has said numerous times since the news broke of MP3 and DLNA support, that the engineering teams in Japan are investigating how to bring those features to the PS4, and when they can do it. He also said they always intended to bring it to the console, just not on Day 1, as the most important features for Day 1, were gaming features. I can definitely appreciate that.
Considering how much Sony has paid attention to consumer feedback, you can expect it to happen.
Personally, I am holding out for when Sony introduces PSN ID name changing.

Any chance we will get a knack review soon? I'm not gonna open my copy yet because of the terrible metacritic score. However I want to play it with my 3 year old and if you give it anything close to a decent review I'm gonna keep my copy.
I have it myself but havnt played it. Those reviews are not very good true, however word of mouth is it is totally reminiscent of old platformers including jak, crash and ratchet.
Dude, don't use a review as the sole reason for a purchase.
Reviews are more often then not, opinion pieces based on that reviewers personal tastes. Just because Ben gives Knack a bad review (if he does), doesn't mean you and your 3 year old won't enjoy it.
Just give it a go. The only thing you have to lose is money, and you can always get plenty more of that, but chances to enjoy a video game with your 3 year old, now that is limited.
yea i think we'll be okay i hope my console runs okay.
happy gaming =)
Looks like the launch was successful overall.
Sucks that it doesn't have any killer must have exclusives to play.
Oh well. Makes it easier to wait for. That and having the early bugs and kinks worked out.
EDIT: I'm concerned that we won't move away from trans gen Ports so soon either. I'm thinking the next gen will be deprived from spreading it's wings anytime soon. Too bad too because this is when we need Sonys exclusives most and the ones they're releasing are mostly coming up well short

I bought my PS4 at a Shopper's Drug Mart (Toronto, Canada, they only received 2 consoles, and I bought the last one so I was very lucky…on top of that I earned 3990 reward points (for the store's reward/points program) and a $10 gift card (for spending over $75 i think?) so it's a jackpot =] but for me since I'm not a big fan of FPS, there's very limited amount of games that I like on launch day, so just been playing my cross-bought AC4 =]Thanks to PlayStation for including a 1-month membership for PS+ and a $10 PS Store credit =D

The reason for the touchpad is about adding a new form of input into an industry dominated by physical controls.
It is Sony's attempt to innovate.
The level of success is going to be determined by how much the developers use it. I have seen some small instances of it so far, but it isn't being used to the extent that the Sixaxis was.
Sixaxis was a gimmick, and was nothing more than frustrating, and intrusive to my gaming experience, I hated every single time I had to use it.
I'd agree that most instances of sixaxis use didn't seem very well implemented, but I didn't mind it in Folklore. If memory serves I thought it a good use for wearing out souls for the taking from various creatures.
As for the touchpad on the DS4 I hope it is successfully integrated well and even very well in the designs of the games it will be used in. I cannot comment on it's functionality personally, but I hope it does indeed serve a viable purpose and it put to good use in the games that incorporate and isn't implemented mindlessly.
Even though the grades are fair (although I wouldn't care if my machine came in a black bag) and many agree. Other viewers coming to the site who are not regulars, or xbox fans may not understand and think that you rated the new PS4 a B+ machine.
Wait a year (AT LEAST) to get "makin' this thing right" for what Sony wants you to plunk down for it.
I have to say I miss the good old days when consoles came with 2 controllers and a game !
I'm not sold just yet on the PS4 ! I'll let it sink in for a few months before I take the plunge but to those who did, enjoy your gaming on your new console !
VERY HONEST OPINION I LIKE IT.
I held of on the purchase because I still have so much to get done on the PS3. I probably wait till there is a game that blows doors off, or next holiday season bundles.
