I am well aware of all the financial reasons why manufacturers don't often create bundles for launch day. I also know there are other issues, especially if you wanted to include a game from a third-party developer.
But please, Sony, please produce a couple cool PlayStation 4 packages for the holiday season. Nobody has any interest in going to the store and coming home with just the console; they obviously want a game or two, an extra controller, and maybe other accessories. It's not just about missing the days when every new video game system came with a game, it's just about doing something that makes lots of sense. At least, from a consumer's perspective, at any rate.
So look, if the price of the top model of the PS4 (assuming there will indeed be two models, as has been rumored) is $499, do this: Make a bundle that includes a game (either Killzone: Shadow Fall or inFamous: Second Son would be nice), an extra controller, and one free month of PlayStation plus for $599. Yeah, that's a good deal right there, and I have a feeling a lot of people would spring for it; hell, that's probably what the majority plan to bring home on launch day, anyway! Oh, and if that thing doesn't come with an HDMI cable, bundle or no bundle, I'm just gonna scream.
It's the holiday season, you've got a new console, you very likely have to go head-to-head with Microsoft, so give consumers a fantastic bundle option. Basically, it's the perfect start-up package for a new generation.
They should do this indeed. The $600 price is acceptable as well for that type of package, so heres to hoping something like this hapoens. And if theres no HDMI im ok. I have one. I always agreed the PS3 really should have released with one though.
All this next gen talk has made me truly realize video games are really expensive. I'm probably going to stay with PS3 for a very long time. Besides the huge amount of games I haven't played yet plus the new releases like The Last Of Us, Beyond, GT6, Watch Dogs, GTA5, MGS: Ground Zeroes, MGS5, Rain, Puppeteer and Until Dawn, Battlefield 4, Assassin's Creed 4, Diablo 3, Destiny and more plus games that haven't been announced yet, all that is years and years of content.
Well, at least they are bundling one of the most overlooked peripherals in the PS4 to make up for not doing so with the PS3, a headset.
I HATE silent online players, unless the players turn out to be immature, annoying kids, or people clearly there to troll, then those people have my permission to keep their stupid mouths shut. 🙂
Agreed, and I know my request is 100% impossible but please give us colors!
Yes! Would love color options!
As for Ben's ideas, I like them. Although, I think bundling a game isn't as necessary as it was in the past, what with the availability of downloadable titles. When I was a kid a new system was literally useless without a game. Now, you can just hookup a console to the web and download something to play and you don't have to go to a physical store. An obstacle that deinitely used to exist, back when stores actually closed for extended periods of time at the Holidays.

You can have it in any colour as long as its black 🙂
Why exactly are different colors impossible for the PS4, World?
The PS3 comes in several different color options now, even if those options were annoyingly lacking for quite some time.
Considering the fact that Japan and Europe have been much more spoiled for choice when it comes to console colors, and have had those options for a much longer period of time, I feel that if we were more vocal of our desires to Sony, and made our requests with enough persistence, they might be inclined to bestow equal treatment to NA as well.
ooh a royal blue metallic
I'm no expert but if Sony launches a console for $599 then they are simply repeating the same method of the PS3's launch.
I ended up waiting a year before buying it.
I think if they added extra stuff this time for the $600 package it would be okay.
Many retailers create their own bundles.
Man, my N64 didn't even come with an N64. My Gamecast didn't even have a game or a cast. I can't afford it!
another thing to help sales, colors.
oh come on its not that difficult to offer different colors for release!
or even better make each panel on the ps4 removable so people can buy new panels of their favorite games on it.
id love to deck out my ps4 in some last of us skins or something.
another thing both manufactures should go for is a subsidized contract.
say 25 bucks a month for 2 years and you get a game of your choice, 2 years of PSN+, a second controller, and of course the ps4.
thats say the ps4 is 500, 1 game is 100, PSN + say 150, a second controller another 100.
thats 850 bucks worth of crap for only 600!
or even if they end up doing what mobile carriers do and rip customers off, giving them a 600 dollar phone but the contract is 1300!
even that will do quite well, because 99% of people are too stupid to do the math and figure out there actually spending twice as much and then some!
if they ask for 500 up front thats going to lock allot of people out, a subsidized contract really will bring in a whole now market.
I think they will likely come out with bundles, but I just don't know how soon. The sooner the better, because competition will be tough this year and Sony should use every advantage it can to get ahead as early as possible.
There will be one bundle: Killzone Shadowfall, no extra controllers, and 3 months of PSPlus
Who doesn't have an HDMI cable in 2013?
Having no interest in Killzone or Infamous, I'll take a Drive Club (logo inscribed) bundle.
A premium bundle with a PS Vita for 500-600 buck.
i'd buy it!!!
Bundles usually don't appear at launch. I would like to see the big retailers like Best Buy, Gamestop or Wal-Mart take the initiative and offer up bundles to get people to buy their consoles there. $20 off a game or peripheral goes a long way.
Seems like the same bundles we'll see this fall are the old "Arcade" and "Pro" models.
I want a bundle.
I wonder if a "get a vita, get a ps4 discount" would have any economically sound effect?
I don't get this article? A new console always comes with at least 1 game?? Or is that something European?
NO new console comes with a game in North America. Hasn't for many, many years.
I have another idea, beyond just the must-have bundles.
Given the free-to-play games that have been announced for the PS4 so far, such as Blacklight: Retribution and War Thunder, I think it would be very smart for Sony to actually pre-install all launch FTP games on the hard drives of EVERY PS4. None of this 'brochure notifying people of the free games' malarkey – actually have the games right there, ready for playing as soon as the console is set up. They're already free so it doesn't actually cost Sony anything apart from the process of getting the games on the drive, and it gives those games a lot more publicity, likely resulting in many more people giving in to their micro-transactions. Also, advertise them on the box – imagine what the casuals would think to see a new console with like 5 or 6 games pre-installed (I assuming more FTP games will be announced before launch, at E3 especially). It would likely come across as a good value. A bit skeevy, but free games are free games. New owners don't have to bother downloading them, and Sony/their devs get more people playing them. Win-win.
