Ben-DutkaI always think it's interesting when an obvious Game of the Year contender launches early.
There's a reason why a lot of Oscar hopefuls tend to release towards the end of the year, because those in charge know the films that are fresh in voters' memories have a better shot. I think it's the same with video games. It only makes sense.
As of right now, I don't think many would dispute the idea that the excellent Bioshock Infinite is the best title of 2013 so far. For many gamers, despite the greatness of games like Tomb Raider and DmC: Devil May Cry , it isn't even a contest. Of course, we've got a long way to go, and there are some significant challengers scheduled for later this year. The Last Of Us will be ready to go in June and then you've got Grand Theft Auto V in September. Those might be the primary challengers but don't forget that the new generation starts in the fall (assuming that "Holiday 2013" window for the PS4 is accurate).
Hence, is there a chance games like Killzone: Shadow Fall will be in the running? And by the way – and forgive the tangent – but how does one accurately compare next-gen and current-gen titles? Is that even fair? I'm not sure it is. But anyway, other contenders probably include Watch Dogs , Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag , and maybe even Battlefield 4 (if they do it right). The bottom line is that there are plenty of amazing titles slated for 2013, so as fantastic as Bioshock is, do you think it has the legs to stay on top? Don't forget that people will have to remember its greatness for it to be properly respected in end-of-year award ceremonies.
I actually think it has a shot. I have only minor reservations for some of the games listed here, but they are reservations. What about you?
