Can you imagine? It always seems as if the hardcore role-playing fans and the shooter fans are on opposite ends of the spectrum, so what if we took the most iconic franchise from each genre and blended 'em together? That'd make everyone happy, right?
I know what many will say, that something like Fallout is a blend of FF and CoD but that's not really what I mean; I'm talking about a merging of the two existing franchises so both sets of fans have recognizable elements and characters. So let's see, what should we have?
Chocobo Medics: Remember how annoying it was when the damn yellow Chocobos kept healing each other in Final Fantasy Tactics ? Well, in the midst of a battle, a Chocobo has to try and revive you. Sure, it can fly. It can even attack with its beak if it gets pissed.
Moogle Grenades: Every grenade, no matter what type, is shaped like a certain sort of Moogle. If you get enough of them and throw them all at once, ten Moogles pop out of the "exploding" device, surround the unfortunate victim, and dance around him until he dies.
It was the sniper on the grassy knoll! I want good ol' turn-based combat with a few twists; like character movement and position still matters (ala Suikoden V crossed with Resonance of Fate ). But remember how in Final Fantasy X , you could switch characters in and out of battle? Well, what if snipers could sort of hover around battles and try to get off some damaging shots from afar? They could also radio for backup to other characters you may have in your party; the sniper would be a support character, really.
Auto-battle or FPS control: If you want to go the traditional RPG route, you can let the character execute the command automatically, as in days of old. If you want to switch to a first-person mode, though, you can actually aim for certain spots on an enemy, as one would do in a FPS. It might be slower than the auto, but you should be able to get in some critical hits, while it's certainly not guaranteed with the auto-battle.
Towns AND maps: Yeah, towns for the shops and NPCs and quests and actual full-on battlefield maps that come with any given FPS. You know how one would enter a forest from the world map in the old days? This would be similar; only you'd be entering an actual FPS-like map, where you could fight both AI enemies and human players. This could lead to all sorts of co-op/multiplayer possibilities but they wouldn't be necessary.
Cid's an arms supplier: If you want any munitions are ammo for characters that wield firearms, you know where to go.
Mages must top casual gunmen: Well, magic was always more powerful than swords, so…besides, guns tend to suck in RPGs. But , if you want to train someone in guns right from the start, that'd be a whole different matter.
Cloud is an unlockable character; he has Ultima Weapon in one hand and a minigun in the other: It just has to happen.
Ben had some fun today with this one. All of those mediocre games he's had to review has caused him to dream up a game he'd actually like to review.
Okay, back to this math statistics insanity. woe is me.
" All of those mediocre games he's had to review has caused him to dream up a game "
LOL!
not sure we should risk ripping the fabric of the universe by destroying final fantasy with the likes of COD and Boobby Kotick
(and that extra o is intentional since he thinks like one alot)
CoD and FF eh?
Funny thing is that Square Enix is distributing Black Ops in Japan.
Oh yes, that distribution must be hard.
Square-Enix manager: Hey Fuku-san! I need you to take this case of this American gun game and hand off one copy to each shop you see down the street. When you've dropped off all 25 games, pat yourself on the back and feel good that you saved us some Yen in shipping.
That's hilarious Temjin001. Man I lol'd at that.
Oh man, Ben, don't be giving Square Enix any ideas. The genre bending this gen is already as bad as gender bending in San Francisco.
Remember how Frankenstein's monster turned out?
Yeah, everybody hated him…but he set out to kill his maker, too.
Maybe it's the only way to slay the mad scientist.
I hope you're talking about Wada 🙂
Y'know, reading through this I was expecting it to be another reader editorial, then got to the name. Ben, it's so rare that you do comedy. Whatever happened to them anyway?
It actually sounds like a fun idea. But well, this could theoretically be done without either licence, and you can guaran-damn-tee that I would be there to pick it up. FPS in my turn-based RPGs? I do want.
Speaking of turn-based RPGs, there was a review for Costume Quest on GG earlier this week, and it appeared to be a good forward movement for the genre, in terms of how it plays out. Just a little suggestion there for anyone who likes that type of game. I'd be interested in seeing what the afficianados here think of it.
Peace.
Sounds fun to me. I would prefer it to be a classic srpg and it would certainly be a title I wouldn't mind picking up. Although it may not work for some it seems as if there are so many wacky concepts tied together making it so incredibly unique that it might be worth playing… even if it got a 2.0 lol
Or this would really be the death cry of gaming.
It's the old adage: "If you can't beat 'em, join 'em"
FF was the CoD of the PSX era. FF7 was the first video game I remember that when it released their were lines, reserve copies, news reporters etc. It was a big deal back then.
Or is that an axiom? What's the diff between and axiom and an adage anyway? =)
There is no real difference between the two. Just another pair of words for the English language to confuse people with. I think an adage is a common saying when an axiom is more of a random comment.
Interesting idea. But I'd rather keep them separated. After all, there are only 2 kinds of gamers here at PSX. Those that <3 COD, and those that sit around twiddling their thumbs, waiting for FF7 to be remade by a company they can't stand anymore. 😉
Man I've been twiddling my thumbs since 2006, and after all the cramps, aches, and thumb muscle workout, I can tell you it's tiring, *watches VS XII trailer*…oh well back to twiddling
No…just…just no.
no
Haha nice Ben, this was all just a ploy to get me to play Valkyria Chronicles again wasn't it?
Not that I'm complaining. 🙂
This would be like taco bell and mc donalds joining together to make a big mac burrito, both are in the same business but make completely different products. Both of which should neve be joined.
Though i have seen a taco bell kfc before
Nuke beats Meteo every time.
But not Knights of the Round!!
Nuke fails against ribbon…just saying
Well, FFXIII in a way does have FPS elements to it, and it is the closest game so far that is a mix between CoD and FF. Maybe your game could come true after all?
In what way does FFXIII have an element similar to an FPS? Just cause it had guns?
Main controlled character dies = Game Over
Sub characters die, but can be revived
Game over: Load from the last pre-battle checkpoint
No towns
Class names are FPS class names.
Well, they aren't many, but they do exist..
Valkryia Chronicles is more of a mix than FFXIII tho more RPG than F..erm TPS
Sooo those elements doesn't really define an FPS…. The roughest definition of FPS is aim and shoot which the FF series is too far from.
Lol I apologize for being off topic, but when I read the headline, I immediately thought "Call of Fantasy: Purge of Enix" =P
Back to being on topic, the things you pointed out Ben, really make sense to me.
And if the last one happens, I declare epic sauce.
But unfortunately, the bulk of the FPS nuts would, probably, and I stress probably, not know who Cloud is (heck, maybe even Tifa too) 🙁
They would probably know who Lightning is though ^.^, and I'm not sure if that's a good thing or not…..

Red XIII Redemption. Red XIII's cub has been captured and taken off to Shinra. With the help of Barett's gun arm and some other old friends you must find the kidnappers and bring them justice before it's too late.
Give me a few years i can make it happen. Of course without all the copyright infringement.
I bet only a handful of people would play as cloud, as any hardcore fps player might not know who he is. But personally, id rather see squall in a game like this. Since he has the awesome gunblade, it makes more sense to me. Plus, could you imagine the awesomeness of that melee attack? Strike with the gunblade and push r1 to shoot a bullet just like in ff8? Oh savage.
I'm really liking your avatar.
I think it should be Cactuar Grenade instead of Moogle, I don't think Moogles will call you Kupo anymore if you use them as grenade. Plus the Cactuar really likes to dance anyway.
Ben that last line made me laugh so hard. and woot finally decided to post instead of lurking and reading
I could see something like that coming together and forming a good game, if the right aspects from each game were put into the right places. (the ability to switch from 1st to 3rd person view, equipping items, learning spells, using a wide variety of weapons, adding perks to have the edge, controlling a parties actions & switching between members @ any time, gaining hard earned experience to acquire advanced moves) such a game would have to be in real time. and the close and long range battles &/or skirmishes would have to be balanced by providing terrain to encourage original and strategic gameplay.
Sorry for rambling on. all of this just popped into my head after I read this article. Because RPG and FPS are two of my favorite gaming genres and such a concept of the two fusing into one sends me into a state of pure wonder.
