Most avid gamers tend to have a bit of a ritual surrounding their play time.
Firstly, I've chosen this picture – you've likely seen it before – because I think many adult male gamers have done it before: show a girl how to hold a controller and she'll go along with it like a good sport…for a while. Anyway, what do you usually do when you sit down to play a game? Personally, I know a lot of people like to snack but I hate doing that; not only because I really despise chugging unnecessary empty calories (which is what most all snack foods are), but also because it seriously hinders my game time. I've yet to understand why people will actually pause the game to eat something. So bizarre. Then there are other people who really don't like to play their games in front of someone; they consider it more of a personal hobby and one that's best done in solitude.
I live alone so I rarely play with someone watching, but I have found that I do prefer it to be a solitary experience. I think that comes from the old days when gaming was a solitary experience; the only "multiplayer" was if a friend was sitting next to you and the game supported two players. I've also heard of very picky gamers taking the time to set the TV to exactly the right settings for each title they play. I find this insanely irritating and even boring and the bottom line is, almost nothing looks bad on my TV. But really, some gamers are very, very finicky about getting the picture juuuust right. Then there's the matter of distance; how far away do you sit? It's bad to sit too close – that's not a myth – and it usually depends on the size of the TV, but I've seen some people get really close to like 50" TVs. That's just silly.
So what about you? How do you typically get your game on?
I'd just like to make a quick comment, I absolutely love this website and the people on it. Ive been here for about 2 years now and I can't help but keep coming back, you know why? The community (family). I can't talk to anyone else about this kinda stuff in my family and I love being able to come here and talk with you guys like you are personal friends of mine. Honestlly I'm having family problems right now and it stems from poor communication and so it's good to kinda have a sub-family I can talk to, so thank you very much for that window of opportunity. I know I had problems with fighting on here before but I and I'm sure a lot of others will agree I've gotten passed this now. I can also say that I do some of my best writings on here, like the subjects just inspire me to write, and believe me, it takes a lot for that to happen. So I just wanted to say thank you all for what you have created here, I'm very proud to be a part of it.

I consider PSXE my little video game hideaway where I don't have to feel like a dork talking about stuff I like. When you're 28 and most of your friends have bailed for a woman, you kind of need a place to speak your mind and have contacts, however far around the globe they truly stretch. I know I'd be awful bored without this community if not very lonely.
My point exactly, I really need this and my piano to survive and stay sane from every day annoyances and the people that cause many of the said problems.
Beautiful comment JMO. I've been wanting to write something like that for some time now, but haven't been able to (fear of non-reciprocation I suppose). I guess I don't want to just assume that everyone knows me when I say something like, "Hey, I'm really glad to be a part of your community."
I've been going through one of those stages in life were you re-evaluate everything you do and find your own personal philosophy. I've come to the conclusion that I have no time for minced words and will live my life unabashedly. This site makes that easy for me. World, I'm sorry to hear that you sometimes feel lonely; just know that everyone here loves you and your commentary and there will always be people who are here for you. (As if you didn't already know.)
*internet hug, everybody!* 😀
I understand completely, I've been a here a while so I thought everyone deserved to know how I felt about them and so forth and what the site offers me. I do feel quite lonely without this website so I try and get on here every time I'm near an internet enabled device haha But yes I do believe we as a site probably have the most welcoming and close community of any website of any subject. *Internet Hug*
It's interesting. More recently I've been less afraid of being "lovey-dovey" with my friends, because I now know that it makes things much better after you've first initiated it. It really comes down to human contact in the end. A simple hug or pat on the back is more comforting than most people know, and you've got to be really open to your friends for that to come out of them.
Edit: Dude, what is your PSN? I'm friending you right f*cking now.

Yeah I know a simple gesture can go a long way, it really can, and it is justin2mo, all my trophies have been stripped and I cant play online either =/ for now at least, i was hacking in a unranked match on Killzone 2. Why I got in trouble I will never know, it didnt benefit me or hurt anyone else =/

*hug* and I "should", note the "should" be able to play again in early august if I stay out of trouble on the PSN, and they "might" return my trophies, I miss my 10 Platinums =[
Dang son 10 plats. You must be a rage-aholic like me. LOL. Except I only have 5 plats. Hopefully one day I will be as experienced as you. haha
Nice, 10 is a whole lot. If Hannah Montana is in there I will be very disappointed though. 😛 I have 7 or 8 or something.
Well, I consider people on PSX my gaming family, so my psn is Kai200X, lets make it offical and see how many of my "family members" will add me to their friend's list.
haha yeah thanks, I just have a lot of free time on my handa anymore, I live in a town in Putnam County Indiana. This town named Belle Union, has just 113 people total in it, if you get the chance look up, Belle Union Indiana in Google Maps with the Satellite imagery, tell me what you see for miles on end.and NO, No Hannah Montana LMAO

Awww…….
'little tear'
But in all seriousness, it's all great to hear. We really do try to maintain that virtual family feel.
Some tears as well Ben, and thank you for keeping the atmosphere, kudos!
For the record my PSN is also Kowhoho. (long story pertaining to that name, I'll tell anyone if you have a mic.)
Ben, my friend, you know you want in on this bro-hug. ;P
Last edited by Kowhoho on 4/3/2010 12:22:40 AM
Alright thanks man!
Be careful when you're offering a "bro hug". The kid's got a pink shirt on. lol
:p
I have to say guys, I've only been here for a short while but this is definitely the best community I've encountered. It's great to see the same people coming back every day and seeing what they think about the news. And it's nice to have people to talk to about games when there aren't very many people around you to so thank you guys for that.
and if anyone would like to add me to psn, its chedison (same as name).
Last edited by chedison on 4/3/2010 3:13:35 AM
its where i can rely on people having different opinions instead of being mindless fanboys and sheeps like some other sites *n4g,gamefaqs*
So it keeps me coming back.
*Late PSXE-family hug*
No really, I love this site and it's community, since we're mostly like minded here it's nice to see that every time something pops up I see people sharing my opinion, and yet we can always have friendly discussions and there's always a tad of humor.
I love you guys! *cries*
PS: JMO_INDY, I hope you're family problems will be over soon, too much stress ain't good for your health.
PSN= same as the name (FullmetalX10)

Hey you know youre jealous of the pink shirt alright? haha I qoute Tropic Thunder, "I lo' da' pussy!" haha and yeah thanks FullmetalX10 Im aware of the issues stress puts on ones health state, part of the reason I suffer from insomnia, and I'll be living in Locust Grove, GA. Just to let you know Chedison.
Always close to semi close, with any drink within arm's length. Also anyone watching but I hate more than 2 or 3 people unless I'm showing off on Rock Band lol.
I do the same thing you described for the gamers that like to get their picture "just" right Ben, except I do that for the volume =P, and I do just that (but not for every game, just once on the T.V., then bam) at someone's house lmao XD
I just play my games, sometimes i'll get to into the game and start doing things like trying leaning forward to look over a cliff(warhawk) or flinching back cause of a grenade(modern warfare 2)
Also if i'm trying to teach someone how to play a game(cause they act like its a whole different language or foreign object)i'll be patient at first but will quickly get frustrated if were not making progress:P

Habits
#1 – im deaf to the world except the sounds coming from the tv
#2 – im mute to the world except when yelling at the tv
I usually move my thumbs… skillfully. And to think that such a simple task gave me some of the greatest moments in my life
Let's see, how do I game? Well for starters I keep a decent distance from my TV, about 4 or 5 feet. (I have a 40' or so) When I've just started a new game I usually don't like to have people around as I'm just getting attached to the characters. If someone came in when I was playing Uncharted and made an obligatory sex joke about Elena, for instance, it would ruin the immersion. I don't eat or drink anything while I play as it could get on the controller and I'm finicky about keeping those clean. I've optimized my TV for most things (to the best of my knowledge) and haven't messed with it since. I really enjoy a good multiplayer game once in a while, but it seems like there really aren't that many coming out. I'm kind of hoping that there will be some good multiplayer Move games that my friends and I could play together.
Apart from that I like to crank up the surround sound when the house is empty.

Damn, homie! You got a forty foot (40') TV? Must be nice. LOL!
Yeah I actually live inside it so it's pretty convenient.
You guys can add me on Playstation Network as well. Lazytrappin.
when i really like the game/story, i usually tell people to shut the F*** up and leave me the hell alone. Theres a reason why i play video games, its because its good at relieving stess. i dont need their moronic input.
LOL 4 or 5 ft seems a bit close for that size LOL
If I'm playing SP, I don't do much. Sometimes I have to remember to breathe. However, if I'm playing online, I always get the munchies for some reason. I also like to finish a SP game before starting a new one.
I sit within the recommended distance of my TV size. My eyesight deteriorated slightly when I had a job that required me to sit in front of a computer all day, so I'm conscious of the harm it can do. Fortunately, I don't have to sit in front of a PC at work anymore.
I don't get a chance to get on until around 7 or 8. Wife and I do our work most of the day. Once I start I usually stay on until 1 to 3 am if I can. Ha. Kinda sucks though cause I get foggy eyed pretty quick when I play late.

Have you tried playing with amber-tinted glasses? They're supposed to reduce eye strain from computer and tv screens.
ha no. I just assumed it was because it was forcing myself to stay awake. lol
since i dont have my own tv, i have to wait till the family is done watching all their tv shows which is around 4pm plus i have to drop people off to work at around 6pm and dont get home till 7pm. after that i start playing a game with breaks at around 10 and 12 to pick them up again. then i play till around 3am or 4am. side effect of that is that i sleep in till 3pm. i dont have a job right now because theres none available for my field. i'm hoping this habit changes once i find myself a job.
Johnld, what's your PSN ID?
Or add me. Mine is Jawknee1
psn id is JohnLD, i dont like having a lot of small things like this to remember so i use the same names almost everywhere.
I always have a drink at my side and a controller for each system within reach. I sit about 6 or 7 feet away from my 42" Samsung with the adjustments I made when I bought it. A hit or two of the good stuff makes for a very pleasing gaming session, but it's so rare it's around I'm happy either way.
I sit about six feet away from the 57", on the couch, and always have a drink but no snacks or food. I don't want greasy, dirty fingers slipping and sliding all over the controllers. I don't understand why someone would want to do that. Save eating for a different time. Depending on the game, and time of day, I'll be alone or with the kids. If we can only do online multiplayer then I'll jump on one system so that someone else can be on our main system and we can compete.
Gummy Bears work. No grease.
They get very sticky when you have really warm hands and I'm not much of a gummy bear fan. Don't need so much sugar.

Playing RPG's on a rainy day..
It'll be the afternoon and I make a bowl of cereal..
Prepare some hot/cold chocolate drink or Milo..
Ahhh <3
New habits:
PS3 + cereal. No new RPG's. Damnit.
I just spin my chair from computer side to TV side and start playing, no preparations other than that.
