Most avid gamers tend to have a bit of a ritual surrounding their play time.
Firstly, I've chosen this picture – you've likely seen it before – because I think many adult male gamers have done it before: show a girl how to hold a controller and she'll go along with it like a good sport…for a while. Anyway, what do you usually do when you sit down to play a game? Personally, I know a lot of people like to snack but I hate doing that; not only because I really despise chugging unnecessary empty calories (which is what most all snack foods are), but also because it seriously hinders my game time. I've yet to understand why people will actually pause the game to eat something. So bizarre. Then there are other people who really don't like to play their games in front of someone; they consider it more of a personal hobby and one that's best done in solitude.
I live alone so I rarely play with someone watching, but I have found that I do prefer it to be a solitary experience. I think that comes from the old days when gaming was a solitary experience; the only "multiplayer" was if a friend was sitting next to you and the game supported two players. I've also heard of very picky gamers taking the time to set the TV to exactly the right settings for each title they play. I find this insanely irritating and even boring and the bottom line is, almost nothing looks bad on my TV. But really, some gamers are very, very finicky about getting the picture juuuust right. Then there's the matter of distance; how far away do you sit? It's bad to sit too close – that's not a myth – and it usually depends on the size of the TV, but I've seen some people get really close to like 50" TVs. That's just silly.
So what about you? How do you typically get your game on?
i usually have an icy-pole whilst my game loads, then lie on my bed around about 1metre from my 22" LCD ive always lied forward ever since i can remember, i always perform better lying forwards lol
you haved lied your whole life? thats not good.

I think I just play my game normally… I mean I'll sit back with a drink ocassionally, and sometimes i'll be on instant messanger, but other than that I'm pretty normal. A lot of games have individual volume levels that they need though 🙂
As like as I have a comfy chair and some Mountain Dew I am good to go!
I have never thumbs-upped a comment before. Congratulations.
Mountain Dew Voltage, Twizzlers, and online-multiplayer shooters (Bad Company 2, Modern Warfare 2). My five year old will be in his room on his PS3 and I will be in the living room on my PS3 and we will squad up on some Battlefield Bad Company 2. It's amazing how good he is. He can play better than most adults. Especially when it comes to first-person shooters. Yes there is definitely a certain distance that I have to be from my screen in order to play properly. My entire game changes if I am not sitting on the couch and leaning forward so that my back isn't resting on the couch. I start getting owned as soon as I rest my back on the couch. It's crazy.
You let your five year old play fps? Nice one.
hey! a FT fan!
@alien
i was about to say the same thing, but at least hes on the ps3/psn. Dont really know what those douches on xbox live will do.
I have to have a soda cracked, typically a coke, and I sit way close up. Just a few feet away. I don't adjust the TV, but I may have to adjust my chair. Eating during gaming is a no-no as it messes up the controller. Also I prefer to be alone, unless it is a coop game with a friend over. If someone is just watching me play it's like having someone watch me beat off -no thanks.

So true! I wish LimitedVertigo would watch me beat it off.. I mean be a jerk off.. I mean.. bollocks.. damn.
yeah, i'm with you with eating while playing, especially since i have 2 white dualshock 3s. sadly i'm not the only one who plays my ps3. I once found my ds3 with cheetos powder on them. told my brother is hes going to eat while playing, hes using the six axis (crap controller, kindda sticks sometimes). saw him lick his finger and continued to play. had to clean the hell out of that controller.
Eating and gaming is so wrong, but at least the DS3 is usually black, could you imagine how some dirty folks 360 controllers would look like…..
@World- LOL at the beat off comment. I don't mind people watching me play, but I have been known to make funny faces which have been pointed out xD
I have been known to let the expletives fly.
HAHA woooow world. is it just me or do people usually perform better alone than when people are watching them? and yes, i'm talking about VIDEO GAMES. because i usually do worse on mw2 when someones watching me.
definitely, with someone watching me I tend to not do so well. Self-conscious I guess
i do better by myself because at my house people either talk to me while i play, when i have a mic on, asking me questions that are not related to the game at all or walk in front/block the tv. the worst part is when they talk so damn loud on the phone and telling me to lower the volume.
Are we still talking about video-games .lol
some games hammered, especially online shooters and other games just drunk, and some just some tipsy. otherwise can't play 🙂
I have to sit extremely close, maybe 3 or 4 feet away from my 37 inch HDTV. For some reason, I can't seem to be able to play if I am too far away. I also seem to play the best on my tv.
I can't play far away either, I've tried to play from my bed which isn't even that far but it can't be done. I'm like disconnected from it.
Yeah, same, i dont mind havign people aroudn, but it does hinder the experience and my skill.
I like to get some snack foods, ones that dont require me to pause me game to eat, and a nice ice cold soft drink (aka Soda).
I'm one of those people that like to play a new game alone.
I can agree with that. When i played FF13 just now, I found many of the cut-scenes rather emotive. My flatmate nextdoor always has a friend round and when they play it, they always take the …mic. Whilst while he is on his own, i've heard him gasp due to the coolness.. Thin walls at Uni, lol.
I like to be all alone with the lights off and the volume up. no food, but maybe a drink.
I also forgot to mention i play naked.
"Why are you naked in my house?"
"The question is… why aren't you?"
"hmmmmm, you're alright, Griffin."
Try saying that when your dad comes home.
Large glass of tea, pack of smokes, and some form of self-medication to take the edge off after work, and I'm good for hours. I prefer to play alone, too. My girl and I play some together at night, but I slip most my game time in during the afternoon once I'm off and she's still working.
I get comfy on my large bean bag chair, turn volume up a bit and get immersed in a game.
I don't like getting interrupted if I'm in the middle of a boss fight or puzzle; I won't talk to others (phone or in person) unless we're doing co-op or multiplayer since it pertains to the game (I don''t get the fuss about cross-chat). Other than that, i take the occasional breaks for a light snack, bathroom, beer or email.

Alright, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark, and we're wearing sunglasses….hit it!
Good call Highlander.
I usualy don't drink nor eat while playing. I don't want to mess up my PS3 or my controllers. I usually like to play the game by myself because no one in my family knows whats going on, unless I can show off my skill to some of my friends.
i like to play alone unless im showing my mad no scope skills at cod.
I am a man of solitude personally, I love playing games by myself as it is very much a stress reliever for me, being in High School, stress is in abundance believe me haha. I find that having a drink near by is a must for me, as I do have VERY long gaming sessions and it requires no pausing or getting up. I sit around 6 feet away or so im in my bed or my gaming chair (5 feet?). I zone out quite a bit when I play with the surround sound on on the ol'42" Bravia. I will admit I do partake in Ben's annoyances of calibrating the screen for each game, it just adds to the immersion in my oppinion. I will occasionally play online but honestly I enjoy gaming more by myself for the sheer fact I don't have people on my ass about where to go or about an object I missed you know? So that's my habits persay in the video game land realm. I will admit I use to "smoke" while I played but I got off that stuff pretty recently for school reasons and health worries. Please don't judge me, I'm young, let me make mistakes as I am in the time of experimentation, and allow me to learn as I have in the past.

The only mistake you made is that your health will be fine either way, school is a good reason to take a break though.
Well I know its not too unhealthy, but the constant fear of getting randomly drug tested at school was always scary for me =/ As I'm moving to Georgia this summer to finish high school (family problems) I cant risk having it on my record right now.
random drug tests at school? Dayum, we never had sh*t like that in my day.
Yaeh, we have them a lot here, we dont have huge drug problems, just a precaution really. My school is in the middle of four corn fields literally. A total of 400 or so kids in grades K-12 so it's not huge by any means.
I saw your YouTube videos you linked here a while back. Nice stuff. It was amusing seeing a PSX commentator in live action.
HAHA well thank you very much for watching lol I really do appreciate it man.
hey I live in Georgia
Good for you, Douglas!
If it's a new game, then nothing but a drink and a fully charged controller. If it's a game I've played before and coming back to it then maybe a granola bar or some trail-mix.
The only game that I've found that I can play and have others around watching is Borderlands. Everything else I HAVE to play alone, at least for the first play-through, unless it's something like Uncharted 2 where I have to show the person (or people) how the game looks.
As for the comfort level, I need to be no further than five feet away from the screen, and have some comfortable clothing on. And no distractions! And time for bathroom, lol.
An old, ratty hoodie.
First off I never eat during playing thats a huge no no! But me and my brother share and he always eats while he's playing, messing up the controler and getting it all greasy and I can't play with a dirty controler. I wash my hands even before playing. for the position I'm usely sitting close but not to close, no more then six feet no matter how big the TV is.
I been coming to this site for a long time and been injoying the news it's about time I singned up. oh yea and I can't wait for GT5!
