Ben’s Week In Review: November 9

Looks like the good games are finally here.

BioWare knows what they're doing

Here's a developer that understands how to fix things. Example #1 was when the Mass Effect world freaked out over an ending and BioWare provided them with a new ending, entirely free of charge. That didn't work out, either, but only because you can't ever appease the ridiculously spoiled and entitled.

It still shows how this studio is willing to bend over backward to satisfy their fanbase. Evidence of their continued commitment to satisfying the fans can be found everywhere. For instance, there's that new interview during which it was explained that Dragon Age: Inquisition actually started out as a multiplayer game . Then came the post in the NeoGAF forums where BioWare requested feedback for a Mass Effect Trilogy remake. The bottom line is that they're asking the consumers first and then making something they're sure we'll like.

Really, it's not a complicated concept. Is it, Square Enix? 'cough'

I'm sorry but I just think first-person in a GTA game is WEIRD

It's not that I object to the option. I imagine it'd be a pretty cool option, in fact. But walking around Grand Theft Auto V in that new first-person mode just seems so out of place.

It's not that it wouldn't work. It's not even that it won't be fun. It's just that we've been playing GTA from a third-person perspective for so long that anything else feels almost like sacrilege. There's this ingrained belief that first-person makes any video game that much more immersive, but I've never agreed with that. It works for some concepts; not all. I honestly have no idea if it'd fly in a GTA adventure and to be perfectly honest, I'm not all that keen on trying it. That's okay, though, because I'm definitely getting GTAV for PS4. Did you check out PS4/PS3 Comparison Video ? …wow.

Personal gaming update

Yes, it's true, I'm playing a lot of Dragon Age: Inquisition . There's some drama surrounding it right now that I'm not allowed to talk about, but you might not care. It seems that drama will be resolved before the game ever launches, so… At any rate, it should satisfy the long-time franchise fans. I'm also savoring the end of Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare , which is a much better game that I thought it'd be. Heck, even the multiplayer is enjoyable for me, and that's saying something. But now I'm also focusing on Assassin's Creed Unity , which got here this past week. In short, I'm a little busy.

By the way, the embargo date for Inquisition is November 11; I may not have the review up on that day, but it shouldn't be long after.

It was actually a video of GTAV being played in first person that had me interested in buying it on PS4. I skipped it on purpose when it released knowing it would eventually come to PS4 despite what they said and honestly I'm not as big a fan as most people seem to me. But going back to the first person view, it just looks fun. It genuinely has me excited for it to some extent. My only worry is it might feel tacked on. Kind of like the third person view is in both Oblivion and Skyrim. It might feel and look clunky as the video was short clips and not real time.

I'm most excited about Inquisition this year. Sucks because I'm now buying 2 games the next 2 weeks. Advanced Warfare and Inquisition. I probably should wait on one of them because Black Friday will be here soon and it's about that time one of the big retailers has a buy 2 get 1. This on top of me getting back into DC Universe. I didn't realize all the support that game has gotten and it runs so much better now.

PGU: Finished Borderlands The Pre-Sequel. These games are just too much fun and so good. But I'm done neglecting the PS4 and with the games coming out I gotta give it a break at least. Started DC Universe as a filler, but I actually played for a while after downloading it again so I'm sure it'll consume some of my time for sure.

Isn't Inquisition's release date for the following week? Like on the 18th or something? Seems strange they're cool with lifting the embargo a week early. I can't say I'm excited for it though. I'm much more interested in Bioware's other franchise, Mass Effect. And as a bonus to that excitement, I read the next Mass Effect is only for the new-gen of platforms.

Anyway, I'd say of the batch of holiday games AC Unity is probably the one I look forward to most. I'll probably aim to get it this year rather than next.

PGU: Destiny sucked me back in……

Damn Destiny…

It's weird. There's so many things that I dislike about the game, but I have an urge to play it. But I've withheld.

yea, it's poisoned me, derailed my regular buffet style selection of games to play. I know a part of my involvement has something to do with bieng so busy. I don't want to be distracted by a new game right now (even though a big enough game could still win me over no matter what). I just want mild and familiar entertainment. SOmething I can engage and disengage without thinking about it during the day. Destiny gives me that. Once school break comes I'll be wanting to do new….. which is coincidentally like the same week the expansion pack releases. so…….

Haha good luck then… I'm actually looking forward to the expansion. I want reasons to like this game a lot. But the recent news that a sequel is in the works puts me of a little. However hopefully this time they get it right and it takes places in a true open world, where exploration is more than somewhere the main story takes you.

I am tempted with Mass Effect Triliogy, as I haven't played any of it. From what I heard it's a great game. I think Bioware will pull this off somewhere beginning of 2016. Hope they will do it right.
I agree with you Ben that FP in GTAV is be a bit weird and I'm sure I will play it in 3rd person as all other GTA's. But having the option is great in some situations (base jumping!). My hype for title is off the scale.
I am also waiting for AC:U which will be my buy this week. Hope for a review on PSXE.

After watching numerous trailers and gameplays I decided not to buy FC4. Not yet I mean. I will be busy enough with AC:U and GTAV.
Shame that I won't also have time for Inquisition because I could use a nice RPG in my games library.

PGU: I decided that quickly before AC:U hits, I will finish I:SS again, being the good guy. I have to admit that this game didn't impress me at all as a next-gen title – neither with gameplay nor graphics. Oddly enough, I like it more now then on my 1st playtrough.

I'm eager to try out the first-person perspective on 'Grand Theft Auto V', but admittedly, I'll still probably play it primarily in third-person. However, something I've long wanted to do in a 'Grand Theft Auto' game is drive/fly in first-person. That looks like a lot of fun to me, and I imagine switching to first-person virtually every time I enter a vehicle.

"Looks like the good games are finally here."

Is that a hint to the kind of reviews we can expect from the next two big fall hitters?

PGU: Too many games! I'm still banking on Amazon to have a good black friday deal on PS+ this year. I guess I do have a month from my Destiny purchase to use if need be. Speaking of which, holy crap Destiny has no depth for me. There just isn't that gripping side quest aspect to it. Nothing has a sole in it. I want the outrageous weapon that doesn't feel like anything other that you can only get through a long process of side questing and and level grinding. Right now BL2 is there to fulfill that need.
What great game. I like playing the PS3 version midday. Then uploading the cross save. That way I can keep playing it on the Vita when I'm out deer hunting. Isn't November and technology great!!

That's about it. Not much use for my PS4 right meow. None of the fall releases will make it into my library either. TLoU remastered is the only PS4 game going on my Xmass list.

Advanced Warfare lag compensation is pissing me off. I now check the killcam – if the other guys view is nothing like what I saw and he has seconds advantage, and if there is a shitty 1 red bar ping – then its time to back out and find a fair game. Slegehammer needs to get rid of lag compensation and have a party system that keeps crappy internet collections together and away from the rest of us.

Completely agree. It's always been an issue with CoD, but this one seems to be exceptionally bad from what I hear.

There's nothing I'm playing now that drags me back to it. I don't have much time to play so it feels lame to spend it with games that don't excite me. The Evil Within is kind of falling apart and Xillia 2 is just a somewhat depressing add-on.

SO I'm excited for Dragon Age, I think it will be just the thing to suck me in and take me away from the reality of this harsh world.

Aeris! (or Aerith, whatever) You're looking somewhat out of character.

That's pretty nice avatar.

I'll have to play DA:I to believe Bioware knows what they are doing. I'm sorry, but the bottom line for a lot of old time Bioware fans was that DA2, and ME3 were huge let downs.

Everyone here knows my feelings about the ending so I wont beat a dead horse, but that whole thing left me very bitter towards the studio, particularly Casey Hudson who is gone now thank the Gods.

I will say that the fact that they are asking the community for feedback is nice and shows a promising change for both Bioware and EA.

I'm hoping to actually pick up GTA5 when it drops on next gen consoles and the FPS view actually intrigues me. I will still probably play it in 3rd person however I can see switching between the two online giving you some great advantages. People did this in Metal Gear Online and it worked really well.

PGU:

I'm actually playing through Valkyria Chronicles again with a friend and having a blast. I'm so disappointed that the sequels never made it to the PS3.

Other than that I'm playing through the free PSplus games now and again when I get the time. Work is keeping me busy this time of year.
