Opinion Exchange: Super Duper HD Updates

Sorry about that title but I have no idea what else to call them. Anyway get ready for some new… old games.

The current generational changeover has been one of the strangest in my opinion. There was a sudden and unexpected shift in the power structure from Microsoft to Sony, a dearth of full next-gen games after a very lengthy console cycle, and now a protracted period of release for cross-gen games.

Interestingly enough I haven't noticed many of our members discussing these things though. Instead recent comments have occasionally touched on gamers' particular passions concerning last gen games brought to the next generation. Many felt that the update of Tomb Raider , while perhaps justified for that extra year of advancement it took, was not worth a full price purchase. Others discussed whether or not they would want to play The Last of Us again on their PS4.

And what about those comments from developers concerning a next generation release of the whole darned Mass Effect trilogy? I admit even I would be tempted to own that, but I find my brain running into a roadblock now and then that says these things should either be backwards compatible (at least digitally) or just left behind. Now Dead Nation has a PS4 edition too. I mean, it's great that developers can get their work out to as many gamers as possible but I didn't buy my PS4 to get stuffed with a bunch of things that are old hat.

I wish it were as cut and dry as “Stop wasting resources and focus on new stuff,” but in actuality next gen ports can employ smaller upcoming developers and be an overall boon to the industry. Then again, just how many friggin times are they going to resell us the same games before we say "enough is enough "?

I admit I was a fan of the HD remakes from the PS2 days, but they had a major purpose for being remade. They were classics that looked like utter crap when played on an HD TV. Now it feels like the industry might be preying on gamers' natural dispositions toward having the best versions of their favorite games.

Time for your input.

I'm okay with bringing the classics (PS1, PS2) in HD to even the PS4. I'm not going to go out and buy an upgraded PS3 game though.

It depends on what games we're talking about. Lets be honest, no matter what people say 3rd party HD remasters from last gen will definitely improve on PS4. Because what 3rd party dev. that hadn't previously worked exclusively with Sony actually made a game that looked like a first party game?.

I said it before and I say it now, I want new games for my PS4.

I don't wanna play games I can still play on my PS3.

Publishers and developers are taking advantage of the gamers' passion.

Konami and Kojima lost my respect last generation, only one new game (MGS4), but they sold MGSHD, MGSHD Vita, The MGS HD Collection 25th Anniversary. It is amazing that people is still buying these games, that is probable you have them (I have the original versions and the PS3 HD versions).

I would say, keep it to the classics. There's a reason that people came back to the PS3 versions of PS2 games, and it wasn't always because they hadn't played them. The first two God of War games are classics; same goes for Halo, Jak and Daxter, Sly Cooper and Prince of Persia. Besides that, many of those compilations/gussy-ups were done in order to promote an upcoming game, thus giving a reason for their existence.

That isn't what's happening so far this generation, though. Tomb Raider was great, but a new-gen version a year after the old is redundant. The same sentiment would stand for TLoU, IMO. Mass Effect is a Gen7 classic, so I can get behind that. Red Dead Redemption I could understand. Dark Souls… The problem is that when I try to think about the games that really defined the last generation, they're few and far between.

Mostly, I think that it's far too soon. IIRC, the GoW collection was the first HD Remaster and it didn't hit until 2010, which was three years into the PS360 gen. Here we are little more than three months into the PS4/XBO gen and we're already getting them. It's pretty dodgy, and at this point they seem more like cash-grabs than genuine attempts to please gamers.

ps2 remakes worked and were justifyable because they were things we just dont see anymore.
they employed game design tactics and genres we just dont see anymore, so doing HD remakes of those were justifyable because it took something we dont have, and turned it into something we do.
or something people miss and crave but wont enjoy because of the painful graphics, and fixed that problem.
ps3 games dont need HD remakes simply because they dont offer us anything ps4 games dont.
design mechanics, genres, most "next gen" games are indistinguishable from their ps3 counterparts, ok maybe apart from the extra shinier paint.

so no we dont need ps3 to ps4 conversions.
developers should be using their resources to bring us something new and refreshing, not giving us last years model with a new paintjob.
yea theres smaller studios out there, but put it this way.
would you rather sanarzu port over TLoU to ps4, or would you rather them do a totally new J&D game for the ps4?
yea, thats what i thought!

I'd rather have Sanzaru doing a PS4 port of TLoU than the 3DS version of Sonic Boom, but that's just me.

most would but that wasnt the question.
exactly why $ony should buy them so they can work closely with internal studios.
just finished watching the leaked gameplay trailer of the 2010 reboot for crash bandicoot crash team racing.
sigh, the things i would do to see that happen!

I got a few PS2 HD collections on PS3 mainly because there aren't any 3D platformers any more. And I'd never played those games before. As far as PS3 games, I've only re-purchased Skyrim on PC due to the huge performance improvement as well as the ability to add mod's on PC and I've spent 435 hours with it so I'd say that was a pretty good deal for $35 for the legendary edition. I also re-purchased Deus Ex Human Revolution because I tried playing it a couple times on PS3 and couldn't get into it, and for $3 or whatever on a Steam Summer sale I figured what the heck, maybe I'd give it another try.

But $60 for stuff that ran just fine on the PS3 and that I've already played to my heart's content, lol don't think so.

The market will take care of this on its own. Game companies will continue producing remakes until gamers stop buying them. What we as individuals do with our wallets is irrelevant. What we purchase collectively is what determines how many more HD remakes we'll see.

You have to remember, there are a lot of folks who do/are going to own a PS4 as their first Playstation. The market for exclusive remakes us going to continue to grow for quite some time. AND it could certainly be argued that the PS4's current best game IS a last gen remake. I don't think they're going away any time soon, as much as I, or anyone else here, would like them to.

i think the only HD remakes anyone is really okay with is the ps1 and ps2 classics because these games are classics and hence the "classics in HD" title on the collections. other wise like every one says its just a cash grab.

happy gaming =)
