Sony hasn't said a word, but lately everyone else in the industry seems to be doing their lord's best to nudge Sony into lowering the handheld's price.
Earlier this week, Next-Gen.Biz ran a story quoting David Gardner, head of development at EA Games, as saying "They still have things they can do with the price and performance of the machine, things that they need to address."
And then today, Chris Morris, in his weekly Game Over column for CNN, ran comments from a number of analysts suggesting that Sony is stockpiling hardware for an upcoming price drop, and that such a discount is in the company's best interest.
P.J. McNealy, of American Technology Research, was quoted in the Game Over article as saying, "there is a price cut coming in the second half of the year…. Nintendo has had a great run since it launched the DS Lite and Sony needs to regain some ground."
The common bond in each article seems to be that analysts predict Sony will drop the price of the PSP to US$149 right before the holiday shopping season.
Sony is keeping quiet on the issue. Currently, their PR people are saying that they don't know of any impending price cuts, except for the $20 Greatest Hits program for software. Nonetheless, it seems like everybody in the industry right now, aside from Sony, is saying that the PSP is going to cost less in a few months.
