Could “Gesture-Based Controls” Be A Vita Reality?

Touch controls are fresh and new. …gesture controls are fresher and newer.

While the PlayStation Vita will boast the standard button layout, two analog sticks, and even a couple touch pads and Sixaxis control, there's something else it might include: gesture-based controls, executed by simply waving your finger at the screen.

As noted at PlayStation LifeStyle , there's a patent for such a feature in existence for a "Sony Computer Entertainment portable" with a built-in camera. It was only recently published but it was filed back in 2009. Apparently, that camera will track the user's finger, and it'll even track the distance from the screen. Hence, your finger is fully tracked, allowing for full control.

Of course, not all patents become realities so this could just be wishful thinking, but it's worth discussing, yes?

That would be cool. Reminds me of the Motorola seabird. That thing was a sweet looking phone, too bad it was just an imagination of the tech available. If sony could implement this sort of control into the os and the browser it would just solidify the d1p.

More like it will solidify its dominance over the 3ds

Soooo… you don't need 2 lenses and an infrared sensor to do gesture controlling or full body tracking?

I'm having trouble understanding how this can work with just 1 camera lens which has trouble measuring in the 3rd dimension.

Movement based control was achieved with Eyetoy, and would be awesome to implement in Vita. Voice control can be achieved too with the in-built microphone.

Sony needs to advertise this stuff, cos atm, all Xbots think MS is revolutionising with Kinect body tracking and voice control, and Sony is doing this ON A HANDHELD!!!

I hope to God that party chat on Vita can be used while playing PS3 games with friends, cos that would just kill Live right then and there, unless Live Gold became half price or better… FREE!!

Advertising is where Sony struggles. Butler brang a breath of fresh air but Sony need to get down to BRASS TAX and just point out what their machines can do. The technology sells itself. I ask myself sometimes. What can these machines NOT do?

If the PS3 Only Does Everything then the Vita can Do everything and Everything else!

That's pretty cool, but it kind of does defeat the purpose of a touch screen a little bit, and seems as though it could be somewhat imprecise. I suppose it depends on what sort of usage it is put to IF it is a reality.

Or it can be used in conjunction with the touchscreen. Imagine hovering your hand to create a ball of energy and as your get closer to the screen it increases in size, intensity and power but only releases when contact is made with the touchscreen. The concept is intriguing.

Hadn't thought of that, but COOL!

haha, I love that movie. It would be sad if there was a day like that. Well.. If you think about it.. today is pretty bad too. I kind of hate it..
It's not like it use to be.

To summarize: In the Future Humans rely on technology to the point where limbs are optional and people roll around all fat and barley capable of… well just about anything that requires physical activity.

But in the end humans triumph. " Go HUMANS!"

@StangMan80, Nothing is like it used to be. We are at a point where most of the science fiction we saw as kids may actually be realized as science fact. I'm jealous and sad for the next few generations.

I would imagine that gesture controls with allow facial recognition. The implications are tremendous.

Vita is stolen,

Perp: All right! This thing is hot! <powers on PSV>
Vita: <scans face> HEY! Your not Arthur Flegenheimer! <Vita locks, sends alert signal to owner and authorities with exact location>
Perp: Damn you Vita!!!

I'm sure that will be the next game security measure for all consoles "Hey you aren't the face that scanned in when this was bought so you can't play it"

Then there would never be used game sales again.

So, I'm assuming it's in ways associated with AR? Because I don't really see much use in a portable device in which you have to hold it in one hand always, so you might as well just touch the damn thing instead of waving at it. Maybe a kiss and a wink at night….or…more.

This sounds cool, i'll be excited to see how developers utilise the touch pads. I'm liking what i see with Uncharted golden abyss, i couldn't get into the ps3 Uncharted games (although i can certainly see why other people love them so much), but i definitely see myself enjoying the heck out of golden abyss thanks to the use of the touch screen and touch pads.

sigh.
when will this gimmicky crap end!?
come on seriously can someone drum into these peoples heads we dont want this kiddy gimmicky sh*t!
i honestly cant understand the industries obsession with AVR lately, i mean seriously ITS NOTHING NEW!
we need to stop trying to add as many useless features onto our systems and just focus on what matters!
THE GAMES!
kinda like GT5.
enough with the bells and whistles, whats the point if they cant get the core basics right?
as ive said many times ill take 1 glass of purified water over a million glasses of dirty water any day of the week!
tis better to be the jack of no trades master of 1, then jack of all trades master of none!

i wish i could give gesture to what i think of this junk. wow you can wave your finger at the screen. lame and useless from hardcore gamer's perspective.
