Specs are never 100% concrete until they're confirmed, but it's always fun to hear about possible power.
The PSP2 is a hot topic recently, especially after various sources cited juicy "insider information." Could the PSP2 actually be as powerful as the PS3? And what about the other potentially revolutionary portable features? Well, while the latest report says everything will be official within the next few days – supposed unveiling on January 27 – we've got more details thanks to Nikkei and Engadget : evidently, the PSP2 will boast a sweet OLED touchscreen and 3G data from NTT DoCoMo. We can expect "multiplayer action and even full video and game downloads over the Japanese cellular network." Last but certainly not least, the source claims the new screen will be larger and "powered by some potent new silicon." But no, it won't make phone calls, so that's why you get the PlayStation Phone, which might be on store shelves by April. At the end of the year, you could have two of the hottest new mobile devices and both are from Sony.
But we really need all the specs and relevant info…and that includes price. The PSP2 is starting to sound like a pricey little unit.
Feasible, but for me it would have to be a short-term subscription. I simply wouldn't feel comfortable paying for an entire year upfront. A monthly, or tri-monthly would be great.
Sounds like the OnStar analogy. I could also see this being a headache for Sony; having to negotiate numerous country specific deals involving one or possibly two different data providers, then trying to agree on a price (per GB) which will ultimately be different depending on country. Definitely doable, though.
Simcoe,
Yes, that's true, in the other hand many telcos have already got standing contracts with each other around the world to cover data roaming. Also the sheer cost of providing 3G infrastructure means that at the end of the day, there really are not that many individual mobile network operators. Think in terms of subsidiaries of partner organizations. It can be done. Kindle doesn't even require a subscription to any kind of plan, but then Kindle doesn't stream video or download gigs worth of games, video and music either. But Kindle works on 3G wherever you go.
That's why I was thinking in terms of Sony arranging such contracts. It would make mobile PSN a service that was network independent (well as network independent as need be for coverage). Consumers will be very put off if there is a vendor lock in with a cell contract. I don't think you'll see two year contracts either since PSP2 is a handheld gaming unit, kids will own them too, and they can't sign a cell contract. Monthly subscription with Sony for a Mobile PSN would make more sense – with the option to take a fixed term contract, pay ahead or pay as you go. I don't know though, it could be a headache, but it might be a lot smaller of a headache for Sony if consumers don't have a dis-incentive to buy the PSP2. Cell contracts would represent a dis-incentive to me.
Oh right, I forgot about the Kindle, that's another good comparison. The problem with the Kindle was that it took it forever to arrive here in Canada (years). If I do remember correctly, part of that was Amazon negotiating usage/access fees though Canadian telcos: Amazon wanted better rates.
I totally agree that some sort of plan needs to be worked out so that kids can use a 3G service without having to sign some sort of post-paid cell contract. Also, playing online over 3G is one thing, but downloading video and gigs worth of games should be down with local wifi access (or via PS3).
At the beginning of this whole thing I thought this was going to be a really cool device, but I doubt it. 3Ds is better than this junk. Now if they combined the phone and psp concept together then maybe it will be awesome instead of making 2 separate things.
Huh? How is 3DS better than this "junk"? Why/how are you dismissing the potential PSP2 as junk when we know pretty much nothing about it? Not that we know that terribly much about the 3DS either.
Anon's entire statement is ridiculous, I'm surprised you took the time to question his thoughts. I doubt you get anything of substance in return if he replies.
How hard is it to understand what I, as a customer, was expecting the psp phone and psp2 were going to be 2 of the same machine. Which made it awesome. Now that it is gone, I don't need to know the specs to tell that it is junk compared to 3ds because that is what gave its' appeal to me. Was highly disappointed when I found out, but I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be junk if 3ds was out of the picture.
Of course, this is my opinion that it is junk.
Enough substances for you LimitedVertigo?
Good luck trying to make phone calls on the 3DS!
AnonWTF,
Still no substance. Your argument is idiotic. The 3DS isn't a phone but you only blast the PSP2 for not being a phone even though there is/will be a PSPphone. I don't see a DS/3DS phone.
Also if your only reason for disliking a gaming device is its inability to make phone calls than you're a very ignorant person.

Why would I bash the 3ds for not making phone calls when that is not my appeal to it?!
I'm sorry if I hurt your poor feelings little girl because I don't like the current state of them dividing the stuff in half. Making one with higher specs for games and no phone capability. Then one with phone capability and weaker specs. Instead of combining the two.
@Anon
Wow, well, I'm glad that's out of the way. You won, I mean, how could anyone else prove that they are more childish than you? So, you win. You *are* the most childish.
Well done you.
Oh, BTW, the simple thing here is that you failed to discuss or support your assertions and instead hurled insults. Which is why you do in fact lose the 'argument', despite winning the race to be the most childish.
Actually, I wasn't the first to throw insults. Sorry if I like to defend myself. Saying that I am childish isn't helping your situation any (which is more childish in your case). If I remember correctly. I had an opinion that you replied to that did not deal with you or your little friend. Then your little friend thought it would be smart to call me ignorant (not to mention he edit some of his post). Now your jumping in with your 2 cent. Sir you fail, hop off it.
PS
If I did start insulting you or him first. Then I would own up to it, but this isn't the case.
I am fairly willing to pay top dollar for this device, not exceeding $400 though, but Sony needs to pull through with games in order to make it worth while. The 3DS has some games that are really catching my interest, I know Ocarina of time has been done before, I've bought and played it on my Wii. I'm willing to buy it again. But if Sony can get some seriously awesome games on this, like LittleBigPlanet(I'm a sucker for platformers) I will be quite near the front of the line. Also, give us US gamers some great colors! I hate how everywhere but North America got the carnival color line of PSP's….
Oh, one more thing: I know it's not like Sony to do this, but it would be awesome if they'd use a common format for extra memory storage, like SD.
