Well, it's your weekly – …er…daily? – PlayStation Phone update, and this one is courtesy of a Chinese website, which apparently got their hands on the intriguing new mobile unit.
As Kotaku reports, it's actually a review of sorts, and it boasts a lot of pertinent technical information. This means the final specs might actually be as follows: a 1GHz Snapdragon QSD8255 processor and Qualcomm Adreno 205 GPU, which gives the phone a frames-per-second count of nearly 60. It boasts 512MB RAM, 512MB ROM, and slots for a microSD card, SIM card and micro USB cable. The phone can produce 854 x 480 resolution on its 4-inch screen, and there's a 5 megapixel camera. …whew. Maybe a few of our more technically savvy members can translate all that for the number-impaired. Anyway, perhaps the coolest part is that games will be launched via the "PlayStation Pocket" application. The unit is automatically in "phone" mode but once you enable the aforementioned app, the display changes and you'll see Sony's trademark XMB, which would sorta make it look like the PSP.
Yeah, sounds pretty damn sweet. Maybe we'll have to petition Sony for one, just so we can do a little review of our own. …sadly, I am so not qualified to review freakin' phones. Mine's over 5 years old and I really don't care. 😉
I get more and more interested in this phone the more i hear about it. And i hate that. 😉 i hate it because i myself hated phones i had a nokia bout 6 months ago and finally buckled and bought the iphone after i harrassed many people haha! I didnt think the phone was worth it. But i was wrong and use it for everything!
Now i got this playstation phone being thrown in my face and im thoroughly interested in it! My new found enjoyment with these phones has screwed me over, as i knew it would! Ahh well.
So i guess the big thing is what provider(s) will be carrying these phones? I have att now and am in no hurry to cancel with them for a new provider, over this phone. Although its tempting!
Saweeeet!!!
It's running the Android OS right? I wonder if it will come with Android 3.0 (Gingerbread).
I am due up for an upgrade pretty soon. I wonder if it will be available on the Verizon network.
Oh geez, so many questions. I love phone gadgetry. I might finally enter the world of portable Playstation gaming after all.
it does come with gingerbread/ which is android 2.3 btw – 3.0 is honeycomb
my only concern is storage space, it says in the specs 512mb rom, so if its running stock gingerbread, will leave around 200mb of internal storage space, so i duno how its going to be a gaming phone with only 200mb of internal storage?
Bar that love everything else about the phone and its probaly worth it just for all the old school emulators on android.

He did say it will have a spot for the SD card. Sounds like you take the one outta your psp you have and use that as memory.
I don't know about the older psp's but im pretty sure they don't us sd slots, they use sonys memory sticks. It's a pain for me because i have a lot of sd cards too.
There is nothing special about the phone, besides its playstation connection.
My N8 has a 12 MP camera and the largest sensor to ever be put in a phone. like seriously.

Ben,
Hmmm, I'm thinking how about if Arnold does the phone review then, seeing how he already made that other phone app site?
Last edited by BikerSaint on 1/7/2011 11:31:38 AM
He'd be better suited for it, yes.
Sister sites can cross post to each other? Yes?
😉
Yeah Highlander,
That's a great idea, especially since the PS phone will be needing apps, and that way we might be able to see reviews on them first, rather than the ole routine of "buying without trying".
Theres a phone site too? whats the url?
What phone app site would that be? I have not heard of this.
Ben can you post an article on the New Killzone 3 Justice Trailer so that i can tell awesome it is?
Please?
I just watched that one. I want KZ3 so hard!!! I can feel a perfect score coming on. It looks like everything KZ2 was but even more polished + all the little micro errors are fixed and gone!!
I hope this one gets the respect it deserves.
It has the micro SD card slot. That is where the majority of the storage will come from for games.
720p is only 1MP per frame, so it depends on the speed of the censor and how quickly the frames can be shunted away from the censor.
Yeah, absolutely agree. I think the specs on this thing are very, very weak. My Galaxy S is quite a bit more powerful than this phone. I suspect Sony is utilizing components from their Xperia phone to gauge reaction for a product like this and see if there's any demand for it.
Well, remember someone posted leaked benchmark results for this thing about a month back and they were disappointing to be sure.
Then again it's a matter of perspective. From the perspective of an original Droid owner, this will have at least 75% more performance, and with the PlayStation connectivity, additional functionality will help out as well. Still, I'd have personally hoped for a more powerful CPU, perhaps a lower clock with dual cores.
Agreed, arnold. I wish my captivate would get froyo, already. I walked into a shady phone deal with this thing. Shame, really, since the phones hardware proves it should be plenty powerful with an OS that doesn't cripple its potential..
If this ps phone doesn't offer dual cores north of 1.5 ghz and at least 2x the RAM, it'll fail to be anything more than an android with an poorly themed control pad (almost reminds me of an snes controller and why are the colors Mismatched?). I can't comment on the graphics, although I can honestly say I'm not impressed with cellphone graphics. They're cool, but not worth the effort.

Going with a Tegra2 isn't likely, remember that the PSP2 will arrive this year and will be based on a higher clocked mobile processor of some kind – most likely a Tegra. There have been persistent suggestions that the Tegra2 will be in the PSP2, although personally I am leaning more to the Tegra3. Either way, to maintain a separation between the PSP2 and the PlayStation PHONE, the phone needs to be very clearly not an alternative to a full PSP2 purchase. Therefore it's unlikely that they would pick a chip that could in any way be compared in the same class as the silicon inside the PSP2.
The info about 5mp camera disappointed me cause that probably means that they'll use the same camera as is on the current Xperia model and that camera is major suckage. It can hardly be classified as a toy even, it's so bad that it struggles with the focus even in broad daylight.
The rest of the specs were "alright" but nothing out of the ordinary for an upcoming, not-yet-released device (in my opinion).
What's left now is the really big question: The price…
You have to remember that this is probably still in it's prototype stage, so these may not be the final specs or build on the phone.
But anyways, here's 3 video's on it….

Hope it works with T Mobile.
The processor is only a single core ARM design, but it's substantially faster than some, such as my rather aged (now) Motorola Droid.
The Xperia X10 uses the QSD8250 which is an earlier version of the QSD8255, but the phone itself features a better camera. You can bet that the overall features set of the X10 will not be much different to this, apart from the gaming element, and the camera.

How/from where do you know the camera is better? Not that I doubt you, I just am curious where this info is cause the camera on my current mobile (the X10 mini) really annoys the heck out of me. I've never seen anything worse on any mobile, mine or others, before. It's like they've put effort into making it the worst possible cam out there!

X10 is an 8.1 MP camera (according to the reviews/specs I could find), this has a 5MP camera, that's why I'm saying that the camera in the X10 is better.
The X10 mini has a 5MP camera, which sounds suspiciously like the one in the….whatever this PlayStation Phone is called.

Ah I did not know the x10 and the x10 mini had different cameras so I misread you. And yes I agree that it sounds suspiciously like it's the same hardware… And that, trust me, is *not* good news.
Though it must be said that the number of mp says nothing about the picture quality, only the dimensions of whatever picture it produce. So let's cross fingers and hope that they've put a better lense (who I suspect is the main problem) and image chips on this ps-phone.
Oh indeed it is…
Oh I've seen my share of poor phone cams. As working in the media I get a lot of phones as sponsor item (by Sone Ericsson!), so I've been pretty spoiled those last 6-7 years.
There was ONE phone that really, really impressed me. It was actually so good that I could take a majority of my holiday pics with it. That was the "James Bond" phone way back. I can't remember the name of it now, but it was in the K-series with "cybershot". That camera produces *amazing* pics @3.2 mp. The depth, the colour tones, absolutely magnificent.

But can you answer the phone in the heat of battle against Omega Weapon?
godammit…. XP
LOL! I remember that article.
Just saw this exact phone in an e-mail from Tigerdirect.com offered for AT&T, it doesn't show it as being a slider….Will they have (2) versions of it??????

Thats just the regular X10, that's been out for quite a while.
Look up the x10 mini pro, that has the slider keyboard.
Dear playstation god, please let this phone be carried by sprint. My samsung moment blows goats. It seriosuly the biggest hunk of poo I've ever had the misfortune of owning.
So please all mighty playstation god of awesomeness, do this one thing for me.
Amen.
Hey Ben- I think I am qualified to review the phone for you. Just send it over! 🙂
yeah, ben. Im really qualified. I can give you a second opinion.
Im still waiting for Sonys Confirm, I know its coming but Im waiting for the full specs, info and price. I would love a new phone right now. And to have not only from Sony but With the PlayStation name on it, its like the undreamable dream come true.
Something to definitely keep an eye on, however, for me, and I am sure a lot of people here, the PSP2 will be something to really consider. If people do need to replace a phone, maybe now is a good time with the PS Phone. Some good use will be made of it, not to mention you have the whole Android market at your disposal.
…hmmm, have to say, looking at the high resolution images of the device it does seem spiffy no doubt… It looks well made, with a lovely shine to it. Could actually end up being quite a good machine for a great many people…
Q!

Hey Ben, mine phone is 3 years old now :), i'm looking forward to this one
wow, i guess the sayings true when it rains it pores!
first the PS3 getting CFW, than the PSP GO getting CFW, now supposed tech info on the PSP Phone.
sony just cant tighten those leaky pipes can they?
though those specs have to be wrong.
i was expecting something along the iphone 4 spec, but the iphone 4 would eat that for breaky!
sonys best chance of breaking into the mobile market is release something that makes every other phone look 10 years old.
releasing with this thing would be a death sentence!
Engadget has posted more on the specs on this phone.
It's now confirmed that said Xperia-branded device is powered by a Qualcomm Adreno 205 GPU, along with what's likely to be a 1GHz Snapdragon QSD8255 as featured on the HTC Desire HD.
Interestingly, Neocore is reporting an impressive 59.1fps benchmark, which is a huge improvement from our exclusive look back in early December. Quadrant also reports a high score of 1,733, but hey, there's no saying that this is the final build, so the graphics performance may get even better.
Other tidbits found in the latest leak include the generous battery capacity of 1,500mAh, the 854 x 480 resolution on a 4-inch LCD, a 5 megapixel autofocus camera with LED flash sans 720p video recording (although it's probably just that the leaksters didn't look in all the submenu in the camera app), 512MB RAM, 512MB ROM, a microSD slot, SIM slot, micro-USB, and a second mic on the back for active noise cancellation à la Nexus One.
More here….
