You may remember last week when Ubisoft's UK managing director Rob Cooper called the PSP "directionless" , which sparked much debate. But now, Ubisoft is trying to clarify those statements by saying they still see the PSP as "an important platform in the current videogames market."
According to what a Ubisoft spokesperson told GamesIndustry.biz, the publisher wants to continue to work on the PSP and provide the handheld with more games. "More games," by the way, is something SCEE's David Reeves admitted the PSP needs, but we're seeing more and more quality titles as time goes on. Here's Ubisoft's follow-up statement after the Rob Cooper comments:
"By way of further clarifying some recent statements made in the press, Ubisoft wants to reaffirm that it strongly supports the PSP, which holds a unique place in the market, addressing dedicated gamers and offering unprecedented power in a portable console. We support the PSP with innovative game experiences and plan to publish around 12 PSP games this fiscal year, including titles for some of our top-selling brands."
Media Create puts the total sales number of the PSP at 9.5 million in Japan alone, although it's true the portable system has dwindled a bit in European territories. Perhaps Ubisoft will help to sell more units; Ready at Dawn's God of War: Chains of Olympus certainly pushed some units here in the US, but that developer is moving on . The PSP could use someone to fill that void… 'looks at Ubisoft'
They had to come out and say this. The internet has simply, but powerfully, changed the media landscape. If the gaming public wants to "punish" a publisher, or try to hurt it somewhat (take note of the ongoing the "I hate EA" discussions that continue to surface on the web), it can. The power is in our hands, not theirs. Haze? …enough said
Q!
"aLL RoAdS LeAd toO HoMe"
lol @ the back pedaling they did with this statement
12 huh? Big change from the 1 that was released last year? Pfft. This guy is a idiot…
Wow…they sure are good at backpeddling…
"Sorry for my bullcrap, here's some great PSP specs." That's it? We already know the PSP is great, give me action instead of words. ^^
It's scary to think that instead of being objective, the future of a console may be subjectively planned out because presidents or CEO's of corporate divisions simply don't like them. As for the PSP, we all know Cooper's true feelings, it's just that he was forced to give this retraction in the interest of his company. He called the PSP directionless??? Well Mr. Cooper, it looks like people like you may force a console to do whatever it can get your approval, thus being your so called directionless. Correct me if I'm wrong.
