Wow…what the heck is this crazy little unit doing ? Rocketing up the sales charts, that's what it's doing.
According to the latest sales statistics from Famitsu for both software and hardware sales for the last week of March (24th – 30th), the PSP not only topped the charts in Japan, it outsold every other competing console put together . This success has been due in large part to the release of Capcom's Monster Hunter Portable G 2nd , which has already sold over one million copies. It has had an immense impact on PSP sales, obviously, which only piles on top of the recent surge by Sony's handheld after the "lighter and slimmer" model arrived. Here are those numbers:
We probably won't see this kind of performance here in North America, though, as Capcom currently has no plans to release the new Monster Hunter in the US. We just don't freak out over those games like the Japanese do, so even if they did, the PSP probably wouldn't outsell all its competition combined. But either way, it was a damn big week for the PSP in Japan…honestly, has this ever happened before? We're guessing this is a first.
With this now, I think the PSP is the #1 selling system in Japan for this year. Which is very impressive. I just hope that it really gets the message across to 3rd party developers.
Waru: You are correct. The PSP now leads the DS by ~50k units in Japan since the start of 2008. Extremely impressive.
woooww, a year ago nobody wanted that thing!
That's what easy piracy does to a console in certain regions.
Monster Hunter Portable G 2nd? I was thinking more along the lines of FFVII: Crisis Core… guess I was wrong
