PSP Tops DS In Japan For Another Week

At this time last year, the chances of the PSP outselling the Nintendo DS in Japan were about the same as the chances of finding a positive PlayStation 3 news story. But just about everything is changing around these days, and according to Media Create, the PSP has outsold the DS in Japan over the past week. Furthermore, it's not the first week this year the PSP has squeaked out a hardware sales win.

For the week ending February 24, Sony sold 53,373 PSP units, which just edged out the DS's performance of 50,151 units. Obviously, the newly redesigned PSP (now known as the PSP Slim or PSP-2000) is attracting many more consumers, and it certainly helps that God of War: Chains of Olympus is scheduled to drop next week. PSP owners have also had the luxury of several other top-notch titles – like Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops+ and Patapon – in the recent past, which always helps to spur unit sales. On top of this, Sony continues to enhance the functionality of the little handheld, adding cool features like satellite navigation and announcing the PlayStation Store's imminent arrival (no more using the PS3 or PC to access the Store).

As for the consoles, the Wii maintained its stranglehold on the land of the rising sun, as Nintendo sold another 63,504 units during the week in question. Sony managed only 14,060, but that's still a far cry from the paltry 2001 Xbox 360 units that sold. …no, that's not a typo. The Japanese really hate the system that much.

I hope Sony takes note that it is only because of things like the more RPGs and the launch of the PS Store on PC really helped it out.

I always find it suprising how consistent the PSP this year even though no major games have been released for it.

Just like with the DS, the Japanese are getting the Wii first, and when they get that out of the way, they'll all buy PS3's. At the moment the sales difference for the console are at where the handheld figures were in their first year.
