GoldenEye 007: Reloaded Preview

Scheduled release date:
TBA
Publisher:
Activision
Developer:
Eurocom Entertainment
Number Of Players:
1-16
Genre:
FPS

Remakes are quite common these days, but a remake of a remake…? Not quite so typical. Last year, the iconic GoldenEye 007 from the Nintendo 64 returned with spiffier graphics and an updated storyline. But it was only available for the Wii, which meant we still didn’t have a high-definition version. Thankfully, Eurocom and Activision will deliver an HD upgrade when GoldenEye 007: Reloaded releases for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 later this year. Just remember that it’s a remake of that Wii version so we get a new protagonist in Daniel Craig. But of course, that four-player split-screen option is a must.

It’s a first-person shooter with a lot of class, as the legendary spy will tackle all sorts of exotic locales and numerous faceless baddies. He will have access to all sorts of weaponry and a few gadgets, and this time, the high-definition environment should make for a very pretty backdrop. Furthermore, with a wonderfully smooth 60 frames per second, fans of the series can expect the best-looking Bond game yet. Standard mechanics apply and the campaign should be both lengthy and fulfilling. There won’t be anything you haven’t seen before but we doubt the fans will see that as a detriment. It’s a shooter with everything we love; nothin’ wrong with that.

But obviously, the online multiplayer will be a huge draw. With plenty of different challenges and modes, players can get a ton of bang for their buck. Challenges are MI6 Ops missions and feature Elimination, Assault, and Stealth; these vary widely in style and gameplay. Sometimes, you’ll be fending off waves of enemies; other times, you’ll be formulating an appropriate combat strategy. The best part? We’ll be able to customize these Challenges…okay, so it’s only cosmetic but it’s a nice feature. In addition to big heads (classic!), you can alter the amount of health you and your foes have. Created challenges can be shared with friends, too.

With all new levels, a more fleshed-out plot, and the characters you know and love, GoldenEye 007: Reloaded is a spiffed-up blast from the past. There will be multiple ways to finish a mission, destructible environments, and improved and expanded multiplayer. What more can one ask for? This isn’t all about mindless, fast-paced action, either; many will call GoldenEye a thinking man’s shooter, in that you may have to be stealthy, cunning, and in general, more than just one-dimensional. In this way, don’t think of it as an old-fashioned, unappealing title that competes with Battlefield 3 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 . Although Reloaded is indeed in the same genre, it’s quite a different experience.

If you don’t believe me, feel free to ask any of the ardent GoldenEye followers who will defend the game to the death. 😉

If I ever get a move, I probably get this.

After I watched that video, this game is on my list now.

Throw in Bond and nostalgia, I am sold.

Plus, if the PS Move works well, that's a bonus too!

@Pandacastro. yeah, ps move would go great with Goldeneye. I still have the orignal for my N64, i love that game. I was going to buy a wii just for the Goldeneye remake, activision saved me some money.(I'll bet no one thought they would here anybody say that, lol)

I never played GoldenEye, but you make it sound like I should have Ben. Not owning a Nintendo console made it a little tough though. I would definitely check this out before looking into CoD or Battlefield 3. I want another FPS after playing Killzone 3 and GoldenEye may be something I could deal with.

Eh, the Wii version was uglier than an aliens vag, just making it HD won't make me want it.

It's bad enough a multi-platform game is being heldback by the 360, but being heldback by the Wii? That's really limiting.

Unless of course, they make completely different engines for the 360/ps3. I heard better A.I for the HD consoles form the video, but content, graphics, and physics I'm not sure.

I thought they did.

One of the three consoles has to be the leading one for development, and it looks like it's the Wii. It's different I think to a game like CoD for example, where it's meant to be an HD game then port it to the Wii. It looks like this one is meant to be a Wii game first, then HD.

It's just odd of them showing the Wii version while talking about the 360 and Ps3. It tells me they haven't done much yet, and again, it's different as to say a BF3 game from PC to ps3, where we'd have to wait for the footage on the lesser platform. In this case, we have to wait for footage for the more powerful console.

Or maybe I'm just over-thinking it.

I'll give this a go, for nostalgia's sake. Goldeneye N64 was my first love in gaming, got every cheat etc…also my biggest bittersweet memory, as I sold it with my N64 to buy an X-Box…yeah, wtf was I thinking.

Too bad that Goldeneye hasnt aged well. The controls are utter crap and I wont be getting this game. It is pretty much COD with James Bond on the cover.

I love this feeling knowing that a new Bond game will be here soon. I was dissapointed at the thought of having to wait until next year for a new movie. Hopefully, we'll see a Bond game next year as well.

I'm glad Goldeneye is looking good and I'm wondering… when the game launched on the Wii it had a special edition that included a gold controller. I really hope we see something like that when it comes to PS3. Maybe a gold PS Move controller? Hell, I'd buy it.

Been playing the PC remake since it came out about 5 or so years ago. There's no single player campaign yet but it's in the works still. Still one of my favorite games of all time.

*sigh*

The mainstream is getting worse.

Leave the classics alone.

played it on the wii.
the terrible graphics, and i mean terrible i mean this has gotta be the ugliest wii game ive ever played!
they did not bother me, its the boring as bat sh*t gameplay that really bored me.
if i want a bedtime story, ill play elder scrolls oblivion thank you very much!
no thanks antivision!
hey i got a idea, instead of milking the sh*t out of this game how about you put your extremely talented raven software team on a new bond game?
that would definitely do allot better then milking this already dry cow!
my lord, all this milking you would think they would be lactose intolerant by now!

After watching Nintendo's E3 conference from last year, I actually agree with you a bit. It looks like Nintendo is milking a lot of its franchise… the lazy way. I mean they're making 2-D scroll games for Kirby and Donkey Kong. Why can't they just make a whole new 3D adventure for those guys? They're remaking a lot of classic games with classic gameplay, and not enough newer ones. I'm not the one to complain on milking franchises as long as their of quality and innovative in some way.

because 3D dont suit those series, remember what happened to sonic?
those types of platformers just dont suit 3D, if you want to do a 3D platformer it has to be a game like tomb raider or uncharted.
donkey kong or kirby would not suit a 3D styled game.
look at mario galaxy, a brilliant game but it really does not feel like a mario game.
theres a reason why ive spent at least 20 times more time with super mario brothers wii then mario galaxy 1 and 2 together!
ninty are milking there series because they know thats what they want.
id be nice to see some new stuff from them, but im happy with the games there releasing.
they should focus on there nostalgic series, and let the 3rd parties bring the new IPs.

Doesn't really seem all that great to me. I'd rather have James Bond 007: Nightfire remastered to HD for the PS3. That game was awesome.
