Last year, when I was sitting in the third row, front and center, during Sony's E3 2008 conference, they started talking about some massive first-person shooter they've been working on. And then they mentioned that this game would also support up to 256 players…simultaneously. I kind of chuckled to myself thinking the amount of detail per character would probably be limited. And then I saw the trailer. But still, it could've just been conceptual. And then I was told everything was in-game assets. Oh. I remained a bit skeptical, regardless…and then we saw it actually being played at this year's conference.
At that point I realized I need to stop doubting Sony, already. They delivered with Killzone 2, and they're delivering with Gran Turismo 5, among other things I can't think of immediately. MAG is shaping up to be precisely the experience Sony and Zipper have said it would be. 256 players will populate an enormous map, so unlike other games where even 18 is a crowd and you find yourself dead every 10 seconds, the game world in MAG will actually be more accommodating, albeit not to the point where you'll get lost navigating.
The way your games can be setup is in a variety of configurations. You can break teams up into eight and compete against 32 teams, all of which will be vying for supremacy and the title of 'best'. You can step it up to 32-player teams, and, of course, a full 128 player army, battling against another group of 128 players. The scale of MAG is utterly epic, and when you mix in the ability to climb up in rank the more you play, in order to ultimately become the leader of your group, squad, or army, you have a game that is very driven and rewarding for the gamer.
Many games have a rank system, but I can't think of any that'll reward you with leadership duties. I can definitely see this competitive aspect really blowing up and gamers taking a liking to it by going on long burst of gaming in order to ascend to a power status. If this affects clans, it'll especially encourage members to play more in order to gain the respect of their respective mates. Furthermore, character customization doesn't limit you to just being the commander or general of an army, but also allows you to go the direction you wish to go, such as becoming a fighter who excels in a certain aspect. And yes, there will be air-strikes, as well as parachute insertions, mortar barrages, and much more.
With three Private Military Companies (PMCs) to join, your squad has a direct effect on their standing in the world. We're not quite sure what Sony means by "each battle victory or loss contributes to your PMCs world standing, moving them on the offensive or pulling them back to the defensive," it seems a little vague and ambiguous. I believe what they're trying to say is that even when you're not playing, other people who have aligned themselves with the same faction will have an affect on its stats and standing, calling it a consistent "Shadow War." So even if you're not playing, the war continues. And of course, to make the choice of picking a PMC easier, each faction boasts a unique story/background, personality, and style.
For a game that's rendering a massive map with 256-players, MAG looks very good. It's certainly a far cry from what I had initially imagined. But ultimately, I'd need to see this thing running on my own screen in order to accurately judge it. If it ends up running with a solid framerate and looks sharp, then I'll be satisfied. From the E3 2009 demonstration, it sure looks like it's running smooth, let's hope it stays that way.
MAG is scheduled for a November 2009 release.
hell yeah, this game would be sweet if you could rum your squad with your PSP. Or use it as a headset. I want this game! X-box couldnt handle this game.i went to E3 last year too. i was in the 2nd row, far left.
in case anybody is wondering how i got into E3, my brother works at Ubisoft.
Heavy news day, I love it. I forget, have they told us whether this game has a subscription fee or or not?
Can't wait to see the review scores on this sucker, how could you not be impressed by what it has to offer.
Zipper said no fee, World.
No Fees.
YES!!!!!!
take that WoW
Are you gonna get into the beta Arnold?
Most likely. =)
Plz, keep us posted.
Yes Please keep us in the loop!
Sounds good on paper. Sure hope it has all its chicks in a row and isn't some rushed product they'll be patching later.
**Cough** Socom **Cough**
Zipper doesn't deliver rushed products. Please don't confuse them with /6.
Zipper… Free?! Sign me up, I'll be playing that bad boy! Looked good to me and I'm a old school Socom fan, this should be good.
I would love to play this game, but internet speed won't let me.
I'll have to hard wire connect my ps3 to the net when I'm playing… my wireless ain't good enough for this game…
depending on your ISP, your geographical region, etc.. if it's possible to upgrade your internet, it shouldn't be that expensive..
i upgraded from basic to pro for $50 more a year… came with free long distance, and a 100GB download/upload limit per month… pretty good deal, an extra $4.17/Mo isn't bad
I live outside the city limits and I messed up and went with hughesnet for hi speed service. I'll have to wait for contract to be up to try and find something better.
ah bummer…
contracts suck 😛
ever look into satellite internet??

Hughesnet is satelite, but I've heard that there are better providers out there.
you have a band width cap? that sucks. i get unlimited 100mb/s high speed internet, unlimited local and long distance phone, and digital cable for $40 a month with Endeavor. Im in Indiana.
Yeah it sucks. The only thing I can play online is the PS Home games.
well i believe i have 250mb/s high speed, but yeah cogeco cable (rogers company i believe) here in eastern ontario puts a cap on my download/upload limits… but hey, how the hell can i download 100gb of data in 31 days??? i dont even have a HDD that can hold 100gb of new data every month… lol
dl'ing and saving is way different, you technically download something everytime you open up a browser or anything, since it downloads to your computer automatically and is then put into a temp folder, so yeah, you actually can. and videos games, take a CRAP LOAD, of download/upload bandwidth.
im sorry, i know how you feel. i had dial up two years ago, couldnt stand it. So i got fiber optics, it doesnt go out during bad wheather like satelite and telephone lines, everythings underground.
WHOA!!! I have been watching videos on this game and it looks sick!. can't wait… and two thousand thumbs up on no Fee HA WOW!!!
is this a multi-plat or a ps3 exclusive? i cant really see this having anything near solid graphics on the xbox…oh and 2 huge epic thumbs up for the no fee!!!!

lol i was thinking about the wii, the graphics would prolly end up looking like an atari game with 256 players
The 360 might show those graphics, but there is no way a 360 can handle those many people on screen without frame dropping and serious Lag (singe M$ doesn't set dedicated servers) due to processing power limitations. The Cell is a beast and MAG is not only a PS3 exclusive, it's ONLY POSSIBLE ON THE PS3.
The 360 will burn the house down or RROD itself if it ran MAG.
its exclusive
my new punchline; KZ2= overrated
Looks like the booze got to your head…
KZ2==COD4==Best FPSes this gen.
i have to agree, killzone was overated, shame…
Overrated? That's not what I'm hearing.
It was not overrated..
cant wait for this,i should be getting the beta soon too,the only thing thats bothering me is its getting released too close to modern warfare 2,im gonna be torn between them,im gonna defenatly buy them both but which would i be playing the most of? maybe its a good thing i lost my job, more time to cane these badboys
Cannot wait for this game, Heavy Rain and GT5!!!!!!
GT5!
This game seriously looks like it will destroy a hole bunch of games! Hopefully it destroys modern warfare 2 i cant stand CoD games!!
yeah, i got the 100 mb/s cause thats all i needed. The highest we can gdat domestically is 300 mb/s here, and its damn expensive, but no bandwith cap or download caps on any choice i get.
I F*CKING HATE dial-up.
hopefully enough people play the game so you always get into a game. Itd also be cool if you could play bot matches on your system.
