Because we won’t see God of War III or Gran Turismo 5 in 2009, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is easily my most anticipated release of the year. Arnold – that lucky punk – had a chance to see the game in action well before E3, and after finally laying eyes on the demonstration myself, I’m thoroughly psyched for the final result. However, I do have to admit to being a tad leery about the addition of online multiplayer, as I believe this is one game that doesn’t really need the option. I know developers and publishers all believe a game won’t sell unless it has an online multiplayer component (and they may be correct in their assessment), but I’m still old-school and hold to the belief that certain titles are simply best played in solitary. Unhcarted: Drake’s Fortune is still one of my favorite games of the generation and for the most part, I get the majority of my entertainment out of single-player games.
Of course, this doesn’t mean I wasn’t excited about participating in the Uncharted 2 multiplayer beta test. Even if it is online, it’s my first chance to play this hotly anticipated sequel and besides, I can be just as competitive as anyone else online. I was part of the Warhawk beta test that convinced me to buy the game – and prior to that, I had absolutely no intention of doing so – and although Naughty Dog’s gem is a definite Day 1 purchase for me no matter what, I’m happy to say the beta is pretty damn fun. You only have two maps and two game modes to choose from: The Village and The Plaza, and Team Deathmatch and Plunder. The latter is basically the Drake version of Capture the Flag and unfortunately, it seems that not many beta participants are interested in it. See, when the teams are set – it’s always 5-on-5 – everyone can vote as to which gameplay mode they choose to play, and everyone invariably chooses Deathmatch. I was able to get into a few Plunder matches, but I have to admit, they really weren’t anything special. All I really saw was a whole lot of camping and not much in the way of action, which is probably why most would just rather blast everyone in Team Deathmatch.
The Village seems to be more popular than The Plaza, and I’m assuming it’s because the former is much smaller and more conducive to fast action. The Plaza is more about timely firing, patience, and strategy, just because it’s larger. However, both are surprisingly dark, which kinda detracts from the visual presentation, which – while stellar – isn’t as amazing as what we’ll see in the final product. There’s a ton of great detail, though, and if they had included an area that had, oh, I don’t know, sunlight , it would’ve been more visible. But as is, you’re always concentrating on what’s going on around you, and you’ll soon find that, as is typically the case with third-person shooters, cover is your best friend. You can use just about anything for cover, and the simple press of the Circle button will make you safe from an incoming hail of fire…although not necessarily from projectiles like grenades. This cover system works admirably, but I do wish the dodge-roll button wasn’t the same; I will often dive out of cover and into enemy fire when I’m trying to hide. For the rest, you simply jump with the X button, reload with the R2, fire with the R1 and toss grenades with the L2 button. It’s a fairly straightforward mechanic, and one that most should take to easily, especially if they’re fans of the first Uncharted .
There are a few kinks that need to be worked out, but they’re little more than the usual stuff you’ll find in any beta. There’s some crashing and glitching (but thankfully, it’s minimal), and I’m not entirely certain that the melee system works exactly correctly. It’s also annoying that while friendly fire can’t hurt you, friendly grenades can , which instantly results in problems as you might expect. We assume this will be fixed at some point, though. You will gain levels of a sort as you play; getting kills and performing well in a match will net you more experience, and you can rank up accordingly. Also, in preparation for each match, you can set your bonuses: these are secondary inherent abilities you can bring with you into each battle. This can include longer firing (more bullets per clip) or greater accuracy when shooting from the hip (i.e., moving and firing without aiming). I do like the fact that being patient and aiming before firing seems to be far more effective than just running and gunning; if the latter worked best, what would be the point of the cover system? No, the balance is excellent and I also like the fact that you are quite vulnerable as a human player.
Yeah, if you get nailed hard by four or five bullets, you’re dead. You can recover with time, but it’s always best to take a determined yet careful approach to combat. Some of the weapons, like the mini-gun, really ask that you step out in the open and go nuts, but if you’re using a rifle, you had best be sneaky and patient. You can nab the shotgun if you want, but it can be difficult to just run up to someone; they’re not likely to let that happen easily. There’s also no such thing as inexhaustible ammo, either, as you can run out of bullets fairly quickly, and must continually look about for more bullets. The flow of the game works surprisingly well for only a beta test; it’s not just the pacing, but the action has the appropriate amount of highs and lows: there are times when the team is being really careful, and times when massive gunfights just make you laugh. The only downside I’ve seen is that the Villains sometimes have the unfair edge, especially in the Village, as their dark uniforms tend to blend into the background, making them more difficult targets in my experience. But besides this, I really have very few complaints.
I will freely admit that I won’t buy Uncharted 2: Among Thieves for the multiplayer. I want it for the single-player, and unless I’ve got friends who want to play, I may never go online. But what’s there is fun and it can only get better with time, so I would consider this beta to be an excellent indicator of things to come. If it’s this good, this early… The minimal beta problems don’t really hamper it much, and everyone who’s involved should be excited about the prospects of trying the multiplayer when the game releases in November.
This is most buy for me.
I love third person games…
I'm buying this first and foremost for the Story mode.
But the online sounds like a great EXTRA.
So should be fun
I was REALLY hooked on Warhawk(third person). So this should be just as fun.
Day one buy for me. Uncharted is one of my all time favorite games, even though there was not much replay ability (i sold it before trophies came out) it was still truly amazing. And the new multiplayer will definitly add a lot of replay ability.
How was it your favorite and yet you sold it?
Some people just don't collect games. He's paid a high price having sold it though. No Uncharted trophies for him. I almost feel his pain, but I have yet to even play Uncharted so who the hell am I?
I don't understand how a human being can buy a game and not keep it.
Way beyond comprehension.
Fact: You sell it for less than you bought it for. In the end you lose.
Anyway
Dude, it's just a game. I don't usually sell my games, but it's not something that is incomprehensible.
I don't understand how someone who owns a PS3 for more than a few months hasn't played Uncharted.
Probably 'cause I always buy games I actually want…
Like i said…i had no idea trophies would be coming and i finished the game 3 times. I would never sell a ratchet and clank just because there is much more ability to replay but uncharted didn't grab me like that…. and it helped me get a new TV to play these games on
Since Stickemup is obviously referring to someone like me, I'll explain why. I bought my PS3 so I could play Rock Band. Bought them both at the same time. While I was thrashing on that, GTAIV came out. Was at Best Buy on day one. While playing that, Fallout 3 came out. Being a huge Bethesda fan I grabbed that one on day one. Nobody saw me for months after that because I played F3 non stop for weeks. Then the trophy patch came out and I started all over again. So no, I never got around to buying Uncharted. They started announcing the greatest hits and I figured it would be among them sooner or later. At this point I can wait.
And I believe Kevinater321 said he sold one of his all time favorite games. Not just ANY game. That to me sounds painful to me. But at least he's got a new TV!

I like the Beta, it's really fun. Especially the Co-op.
I've played Uncharted and I dig it a lot but can you believe I don't have it? I've been waiting for a price drop for ages and I'd really like to play the first one before this. Can we get a little greatest hits action before the release or do they only come in those groups?
Hopefully it does drop for you but 50 – 60$ is definitely worth it.
Drake was one of my most favorite protagonists I've been introduced to in a while
sux though you know, every year a serious gamer has to put a few buys aside for later and this one should really be on the greatest hits by now, even if it is worth the paper.
Agreed. I don't want to be the one who runs out and gets it at 55usd because "it's worth it" just to have the price drop the next week.
Supporting Naughty Dog > being stingy
But that's my personal take on it
I'm suprised this is not apart of Sonys greatest hits collection. I paid $55 used for it just over a month ago. I hadn't heard of this game till then. I was skeptical about getting it. But I loved it. Can't wait for this one. The beta was suprisingly fun too.

in england its platinum and for £15. Sucks to be you
$55 for a used game! Sounds like gamestop
damn you karnelli for beating me to it!
you made me lol
yup. GameStop. that was the only place i could find it. it was still selling for 59.99 on amazon. Its ok though. the game was still worth the money. the copy i got was in good condition too after i took it home and cleaned off the finger prints. Those Blue Ray discs seem almost industructable.
World,
R&C just dropped the price. I've been waiting for that one since it came out. Look online for the deals. I found Heavenly Sword for $20 on amazon.
I'm 100 times more pumped for the online multiplayer now that I've tried it. Though like most of you the single player is enough to make this a day 1 buy for me!
Nothing about co-op? That's my favorite part.
Same…
SNES had so many co-op games
It's one of those things which I'm glad this generation brought back
Hope to see a lot of it in this game
Sorry, I honestly haven't had the time and I wanted to get this up.
It's ok, give it a go with your psxe staff and friends.
Should be a lotta fun imo
I had fun with Uncharted 2 beta and this will be a must buy for me, but I think I will probably stick with single player.
Sorry Ben but that Plunder mode is awesome, try it more often if you can, even though most will vote for deathmatch.
If you are good and have a good team, plunder mode rewards team work way more than deathmatch and isn't just a camping fest. when you see a team mate about to toss the treasure down the field, give him some cover fire as you can bet they will be gunning for him. Plaza is kick ass for plunder mode also since the treasure chest you put the treasure in is on the second story of your base and must be tossed up there
Plunder is sweet, especially a close game. My PSN is migabyte5000 anyone can add me.
Ben if you want, add my psn, maybe we can get some games going before the beta goes away, my psn is my screen name on this site
I wish more games would employ the GTA IV sixaxis reload mechanic , the one where you slightly shake your controller to reload .
i'm in the beta nah na na na na. ok ok while this is out of my system.
the MP is awesome really really awesome (this is how ur impressions should have been ben.lol)
it's like gears of war but less bulky . the ppl movie easier and they can jump and stuff
i'm not that big on co-op but i really really like it.
and i'm with scarecrow on this u should buy this game and u should never never sell it.
also infamous is awesome
haha i reckon i'm gonna buy infamous and get a beta code with it, killing two goats in one shot!
Its sad some of you haven't played the first Uncharted, you're missing big time.Like Ben its one of my favorites this generation.
I agree.. the first Uncharted was an amazing game. I have the beta for Uncharted 2. It's great. Bot the competitive and co-op games are a blast. I'll be picking this up day 1.
Its great to finally be part of a beta, not to challenging to be a part of in the first place. If anyone wants to join the party online Im MOGUNS82.
I agree, Uncharted: Drakes Fortune is hands-down my favorite game for the PS3, even two years after launch. The story was absolutely amazing. I could play that game a hundred times through without getting bored. After I got the platinum trophy, I gave it to my brother. Can't let a great game like that go to waste…
The trailer for Among Thieves looks to be equally impressive story-wise. While multiplayer is fun, I'm in the same boat as Ben: I'll be buying for the single-player.
T the same time, remember that it not only supports competitive multiplayer, it also bring to the table Co-Op, and that has been a lot of fun to me on the beta, I play co-op way more then competitive.
Amen to that!
Co-op is so much fun!
Seriously, anyone who went through the SNES era must agree.
There's nothing better than kicking ass with friends.
I finally picked up the first one today for $30 at GameCrazy. I can't wait for Among Thieves, I can't get enough of the beta! A few little problems, but they should be fixed by the time it comes out.
This is a must buy when its released
Consider it copped. Uncharted 2 is an automatic buy w/o the multiplayer!
Can u believe xbots believe Uncharted 2 can be done on the 360? True story: Classmate of mine started discussing E3 and how M$ pwned everyone. U know I had to say something. I'll post the story in the forums. I think this is off-topic.
I'm one of those who haven't played Uncharted yet either,
WHY?????
It's because I wait till my games drop to $20 or less before I buy em "used", and that way it saves me the cash to buy 3 games instead of just one. Besides, I don't do the online/multi player thing so there's no mad rush for me to be one of the first.
So far I've gotten 24 PS3 games in the last 3 months, and that's more than enough to hold me over till the prices drop on the used ones I'm still looking for(uncharted, Bioshock, MGS4, Resistance, the 2 newest COD's from IW & Treyach, and many, many, more).
Matter of fact, I just bought "Army of Two" & Lost Planet for $17.99 two weeks ago at GameStop.
And after my 10% off card, I only paid $16.19 each for them .
I just finished Army of Two last night, playing as Rios on recruit mode.
So I've still have 2 more go-rounds to go with Rios in contractor & professional modes.
Then another 3 go-rounds using Salem as my guy.
So as I said, I've got all the time in the world to pick up all my games on the cheap.
Hell, I'm still picking PS1, PS@, original Xbox & Gamecube/GBA games here & there for little to nothing.
BTW, I never sell or get rid of any games(even the crappiest ones), I just park 'em on my shelves so they can add to my collections.
Someone already mentioned it but the Uncharted 2 Multiplayer Beta has a coop game in addition to the two team games. I tried to find coop matches a couple of times but didn't have the patience to wait for the servers to find 2 other players to become available. Also, in all of the Village games that I've played, the field is in sunlight (or overcast conditions – rain). I've played in the late afternoons and evenings so does the light change in the Village occuring to the time of day?
I got it used for $17.00 at Block Buster. That's where i get all my used games now.PS3 lover's go get some.
