We consider the Uncharted franchise to be the very best of the generation. But it wouldn't be the series we know today without an outside influence.
According to what former Naughty Dog environment modeler Don Poole told Play , Uncharted was originally supposed to be a "fantasy game." Then, Sony forced them to make the debut effort "more realistic."
It seems the team had something "much more far out" planned, and that included a forest world where people lived underground. Poole said it definitely had "elements of Tolkien" but with gritty shooters like Gears of War getting so much attention, Sony wanted Naughty Dog to adapt. Said Poole:
" Sony kept pushing for a more realistic game in all respects. The market had changed a lot by then. The demographic was older and gritty shooters were really dominating. Sony wanted very much to get into that market share, it pushed all of its developers in this direction.
So the big push from Sony, not just at Naughty Dog but at all of Sony's development companies at the time, was to craft games for PlayStation 3 that were much more realistic. The pressure from Xbox's success with gritty shooters was a very real force on our direction at that time."
Poole went on to say there was a lot of "internal grumbling" about the whole realism thing, because so many of the guys were from the Crash Bandicoot and Jak era, and they complained about the new style. "But alas, it was a losing battle." Ah, but what a way to "lose."
Uncharted > Gears of War.
Strawberry ice cream > Gears of War
+10,000 thumbs up
uncharted and gears are both superb …i love uncharted's story…and gears of war multiplayer …if u love tps then u have to love gears no matter what
i should not say this but your insane!
saying uncharted is better then gears is like saying kia is better then ferrari!
gears has put a bigger smile on my face then any other game could dream of!
especially 3, cole is such a cack!
Uncharted > everything
@______
Dude, why are you here?
I've never seen you do anything but find faults with Sony and their products.
Gears 3 sp is awful, most uncharismatic characters ever, 8.0 game imo just for the MP.
And luv how IGN protected GeoW3 on the ratings not complaining about the sp, of course if this was a Sony game..it would be different.

@ Oxvial
Resistance 3 got a glowing review from IGN. And both R3 and GeoW3 got 9s. So, um, no…you're wrong.
"i should not say this but your insane!"
LOL! Pot meet kettle.
@Zorigo
If everyone agreed on everything the comment section would be boring. So don't worry about ______
since when did uninspired characters make a bad game?
in that case uncharted, GOW, resistance, infamous, almost every game this gen is a bad game!
in fact the only game this gen that has done characters so well is portal 2.
Think about what you just said. Just think about it. Hmm…somethings not quite right, is it?
GeoW3 isn't a bad game I said it was a 8.0 game, just for the MP, the SP sucks.
It isn't a 9.0 game imo.
And lol at blank line. I don't know about resistance but the mc's of those franchises show tons more of charisma in 1 minute than all the GeoW cast in their trilogy.

Come on _________,
How can you condone M$ treachery? Over half of all first generation 360's had the rrod, that's incredibly despicable and messed up to do to consumers. What do you have against Sony? You realize it's a miracle your S-box still functions but I wager it sounds like a vacuum cleaner.

@Beezle
Don't get ______ started, he's gonna tell you he's gone through numerous PS3' and all his friends have also.
@________
I don't think you get it. Uncharted has some of the most inspiring, and charismatic characters, with excellent dialogue EVER! Nate is easy to relate to because on one hand he's not some huge buffed out war freak with a chainsaw on the end of his gun, but an AK-47 and a pistol. And on the other he's down to earth and actually encounters relationships with every character in that game wether it be an enemy or a friend. You do not see that type of characterization in video games often.
To me what makes Uncharted so EPIC is the stories, the treasure hunter fascination I have, and seeing an alternate stories unfold. But what really has me loving the franchise are the characters. They relate to eachother and converse in a way that's relatable. You don't get that from games often as I said. Nothing matches Uncharted, nothing. That's my opinion and I'll argue it all day! 😉
well said bigrailer, to mr underscore: just mentioning that uncharted would compare to a kia means there's something seriously wrong with you. Claiming that not only Uncharted, but also Resistance and Infamous have uninspired characters really tells anyone with half a brain that you A) never played any of those games or B) couldn't tell a kia from a ferrari in the first place, or C) all of the above. Yeah, I'd put my vote on C.
C, final answer.
I'd like to see their original idea next generation. Sounds like it could be fun.
Me too, sounds awesome.
I thought I heard that originally the game was going to take place underwater, maybe something like Bioshocks atmosphere but I don't know. I do know I'm glad it turned out the way it did.
There's plenty of room in the gaming industry for ND to still create something out of that idea. I think they should explore that , at some point.
That was reported here a while back bigrailer. I suppose that it moved from that original SF-esque idea to the more fantasy type one in this article to what we know today. Interesting.
Why next gen?
Why not after U3, make that game, then make U4. Making us wait for soo long for U4 would make us want it sooo much harder.
As long as it doesnt get hyped GT5 style. That game was great yeah, but people made it out to be the second coming of the messiah and i didnt really see that playing it. Fantastic nooo doubt, but it seemed to be missing a certain… something i can put my finger on. Something intangible
I wish that Naughty Dog were a bigger studio in that they could have two projects going on at once (Think Insomniac with Resistance 3 and Ratchet and Clank) so we could see what other ideas they have.
jimmyhandsome: Definitely! If there's one studio out there that should expand to be able to work on more than one project at a time, it's Naughty Dog!!
Resident Evil 4
What about it?
It came after Resident Evil 3.
Yep, it gets beaten by Uncharted too
Whatever happened it worked, that's the creative process at work. I'm just glad they did things better instead of settling for similar.
Already preorder my Uncharted 3 for $48 bucks free shipping and no tax!
Where?
That would explain the deluge of exclusive shooters for Sony's machine.
no skyrim or dark souls …for goty? @kevin 5
@Tayizfire,
You replied to the wrong guy there champ.
Skyrim & co do look amazing & i can see & appreciate the appeal it will no doubt deliver to it's fans but for me personally i just cannot get into those grinding open world type games. They look rad & are incredibly indepth to explore but it's just not my kind of herbal tea.
To be honest i am more of a fighting game fan than any other genre & if Tekken Tag 2 or Soul Calibur V was coming this year then that would be my GOTY. Tekken Hybrid this year however has me licking my lips even though i played the original TTT back in PS2 launch.

More complaining about Sony shooters Alienange? Don't you like quality, and fun? Because you certainly can't be getting that from the CoD crap you continue to eat year after year.
Well i been playing Gears of war 3 since yesterday and its f-ing badass. Waay better than the last two. Epic did an outstanding job But i know Uncharted 3 will give Gears 3 a run for its money. There both AAA games that show both consoles strengths and are what every console exclusive game should match in terms of quality.
Its no doubt Uncharted series was inspired by gears series but i appreciate the fact Naughty dog kept its originality and did something unique and dynamic by making Uncharted not only a straight action shooter but also platforming and set pieces that make hollywood cry in envy. Trust me im sure microsoft is already itching to develop its own Uncharted clone sometime in the future.
Here here man, it's game of the year for me so far. In fact the 2011 GOTY will be between either Gears 3 or Uncharted 3 imo.
Big fan of both series.
i saw gears 3 yesterday on my cousin's 360 and i have to admit i was blown away by it.
I bought it yesterday as well. I still need to finish resistance 3 but GoW3 is hard to put down.
Uncharted 3 will be good in its own right though. Love both series.
From what I've seen Gears of war both looks and plays nothing like Uncharted, it shouldn't even be compared in the same category.
One has great graphics, there other doesn't with boring, all-gray, all-the-time and no detail whatsoever graphics.
One has a great story with fun relatable characters, the other certainly does not.
Just because it's referred to as a 'TPS' doesn't mean it's the same kind of game.
I'm sure at that time of development it was frustrating internally for ND, to have Sony pushing for something different than there original vision. But that whole team absolutely adores the franchise and you can tell anytime they talk about it. They absolutely created something special. Favorite games of all time, favorite game character of all time, in Nathan Drake.
Well, I suppose we should be grateful. It did, in fact, give the PS3 the GOTY for the second consecutive year.
At least it worked out for them. I like now that Sony have sort of relaxed that, considering that they've allowed the creation of Sly 4. On the other hand, the very idea could be damaging in that it becomes the norm, which really isn't a good thing, IMO.
I'd like to see a resurgence of less serious games, because they're starting to bore me. Of course, Uncharted does have a sense of humour so it's cool.
Yeah, I've noticed that this generation of games have almost lost their "fun". My dorm neighbor only brought his PS2, so he has all these random games that are just silly fun, and I had a blast playing with him. I came back to my room and decided I just wanted to play a fun game… between resistance, mass effect, bioshock, GT5, etc, the only "fun" game I really have would be LBP2.
So once again, it looks like it's Microsofts fault (and Sony's for following along) for ruining a part of the game industry.
You know, I remember when people complained that game's stories weren't developed enough, and weren't serious enough. Now everyone complains they're too serious. When they go back to being "silly and fun", people will just complain again.
Right now we've got a good combination going with serious and fun, IMO. Don't take that away and ask devs to make more pointless "party" games that are only memorable for the fun, not for the entire full experience.
In short hand articles it can sound a bit like Sony baring down on studios but in the end Sony seem to have creative minds themselves and actually add to the creative process not shackle and damage it so I'm cool with this. ND obviously took on their suggestions with relish and have a great working relationship, the door goes both ways unlike other companies.
not much changed really the story is still as fantasy as you can get!
i was really surprised though to see them going in a new direction, i can see why allot of the guys would of been upset.
i wish ND would go back to their cartoon character roots!
the original crash is still to this day the best game ever released!
i wish they could recreate that with a new franchise, give us a new mascot!
I think the sackboy is the mascot this generation.
Of course, I wouldn't mind another crash like game.
really?
thats what you want representing the "core" system?
come on, this is not freaking nintendo!
