Rumor: Syphon Filter 4 Set For Winter 2012 Launch?

The naysayers called it the poor man's Metal Gear Solid but in truth, Syphon Filter was once a great, entertaining series.

Many fans have been waiting for an installment on the PlayStation 3, too, so if this information is accurate, there will be quite a few happy gamers out there. Are we ready for Syphon Filter 4 ?

According to SilleGamer citing the August 2011 edition of the Official PlayStation Magazine Italy, we will indeed receive the fourth entry exclusively on the PlayStation 3 in Winter 2012. This comes after evidence of a new title popped up on the official US PlayStation website; evidence that included details and an early logo, and promptly disappeared. Supposedly, Syphon Filter 4 is a sequel to Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow for the PSP and it's in development at SCE London Studio. Oh, and we're looking at what should be a "visually advanced engine." Yeah, well, we can always use that.

Hopefully, Sony will make the announcement some time soon. Of course, it's still just a rumor but we fully expect an unveiling. Sometimes, Syphon Filter gets a bad rap and while there were a few lackluster installments, the first titles were some of the best available on the original PlayStation. Let's not forget that.

Does Sony make SF? If not I'd be surprised at an exclusive. I'd also be surprised there's been no rumblings of a game that is coming in a few months! Sony always tells us stuff too early.

I've often debated about that with a friend who is pro-360.

He reckons one of Sony's weaknesses is announcing stuff too early, whereas MS keep everything they do hush hush until a few months before relase, therefore taking advantage of the hype train.

There are some flaws in that logic though. Kinect (or Project Natal) was announced a year and a half before it was released. Halo 4 isn't due for over a year, and Gears 3 we've known about for ages!

Also, if MS keep things too close and don't give enough warning about releases, they could end up with another Sega Saturn fiasco!! Just look at the red ring problem alone!!

I really do hope MS and Sony have learnt from their mistakes this gen. It just feels like this gen was a bumpy road compared to the PS2 and Xbox. (And yes, I am aware of the early PS2 disc reading error and Xbox Live problems at launch)

I agree with him, though like you say it doesn't always work the way companies hope. Sony does announce too early, and then things go awry. Games lose exclusivity, get canceled, and fans get pissed that something disappears for years. MS announces and rides the hype, but Sony may drum up more interest by making people impatient in some cases. But MS looks worse and worse because they seem to have nothing on the horizon.

It's give and take, I think both companies need help in the timing department actually.

That's really great news. I hope with that big number 4 tacked on it they decide to put in a lot of effort to make it good. It seems like the 4 being there is making a statement as to a big comeback, so let's hope it's so.

I never played the earlier Syphon Filter games. I heard it was great in the PS1 days.

Was the PS2 version any good?

I feel like this news should excite me, but it doesn't.

That's because you never played it, you should try out the games.

I've enjoyed them.

I played the first three Syphon Filters on the PS1 and enjoyed them a lot. So yeah, I recommend.

I don't think there was a PS2 version? The first 2 were awesome though.

jimmyhandsome,

I have 2 SF's in my PS2 collection,

"The Omega Strain"
"Dark Mirror"
(FYI: The PS2 Dark Mirror is a completely remastered port from the PSP's 2006 Game Of The Year)

If the demo is any indication, Omega Strain wasn't very good. I'd skip it and get the PSP games or the PS2 port (ports?).

It's about time! I loved the headshots in this game. I hope this rumor has some traction.

Having started my gaming with the Dreamcast and the PS2, I obviously haven't played the past Syphon Filter games and have no clue as to the series' story. Do you think it would be good to reboot the series so as not to alienate those who are starting out with the it? Besides, it has been away for quite a while, so maybe a reboot would make sense. However, I'm quite aware that reboots could possibly alienate those long-time fans of the series, so it's also a double-edged sword.

Note: I do have a PSP and I could play the ports in there but if it's a game that requires aiming and shooting, I'd rather do it on a home console or on a handheld with two analog sticks (like the Vita).

Wasn`t there a rumor earlier that the new Syphon Filter would implement a new "groundbreaking" stealth gameplay?

Or is it just me dreaming again?

not naysayers, f*cking morons!
syphon filter had NOTHING in common with MGS!
might as well call DMC the poor mans GOW!
ill believe it when i see it!
1 we have been hearing rumours of this ever since the freaking ps3 was announced!
2 WTF would sony london studios be working on this?
they have 2 massive games that were almost finished sitting there in the back room and there going to start a whole new game instead of reviving and finishing those?
as much as i love syphon filter, and i really do i downloaded the originals off PSN, and logans shadow is my favourite PSP game.
that said if london studio really is doing this, then f*ck syphon filter give us back our getaway 3!
come on the ONLY series to ever run with GTA one of the industries most successful titles!
and they just let it sit on the shelf growing mould.
id be like M$ stopping halo after 2, or ninty shelving mario, or sega shelving sonic.
when something is so popular and beloved you continue it, not shelve it!
god, why does $ony keep doing this?
crash.
shelved!
spyro.
shelved!
J&D.
shelved!
every character you think of when you hear playstation has been shelved!
all were left with now is a greek guy with some serious anger management issues, and a extinct animal from the ps2 days which is looking to be shelved soon too!

Ha,
Back in the day, I remember the gigantic rivalry going on between fans of Syphon Filter & Metal Gear Solid.

Man, I hope SF4's great enough to start up that SF/MGS rivalry again.

That would mean each SF game will keep striving to be at it's very best, plus we can finally stop talking about "COD vs anything" from then on, LOL

as do i but ive never understood why.
syphon filter is a cop based action game, where MGS is far more hardcore stealth.
peace walker and logans shadow for instance they could not be more different!

Nope. Sony London is the casual studio, unless Sony are outsourcing all casual games in the future *I desperately hope for that to be true*. But honestly, London needs to finished The Getaway and Eight Days first, no matter how much we may want Syphon Filter. And, DAMN do I want Syphon Filter.

The original and it's two ps1 sequels blew my mind. Such addictive stealth gameplay that innovated for it's time.

Ever since the PSblog "accidentally" announced the game, i have been patiently waiting the actual official announcement with complete excitement.

They must include that classic multiplayer too! Co-op missions, please!

The only Syphon Filter I've ever played was the PSP game. It was decent, but never became a favourite of mine.

I suppose that's one of the titles Sony plans to announce for the PSVita. Nice. Never played the series but glad to see Sony didn't forget about their fans.
