It's something not enough people understand or appreciate: the more freedom allowed, the less of a storyline focus we can have.
And because Deus Ex: Human Revolution features an in-depth plot within a freedom-based structure, many have complained about the scripted events; i.e., the boss fights. But in speaking to Edge , Eidos lead designer Frank Lapikas explains the necessity of boss encounters for the sake of the narrative. After saying it was a "narrative decision," he added:
"The whole game is story-driven so if we gave all these opportunities to get through the bosses it created some headaches for us to get the narrative to work, so we had to make that decision."
We can only imagine the headaches generated by making the game as free and customizable as it already is. Remember, it's not the existence of bosses that irritate some players, but the fact that you really can't fight them any way you wish. That would fall in line with the spirit of the game, of course, but as Lapikas says, it wouldn't fit the storyline. Personally, I found it a little irksome that I couldn't deal with the bosses stealthily, but whatever. It offered a nice change of pace for me.
The only thing that bugged me was that I had to keep at least one piece of heavy weaponry in my inventory all the time, just in case. That worked out, though, and besides, it's not necessary as the game does give you the weaponry you need during or just before boss encounters.

I think its just fine. In metal gear solid for example, you're meant to use stealth to get through the game, but then once you face the bosses, that tends to get thrown out the window. That never bothered anyone, because those bosses were awesome, and it was nice to finally go against an enemy that didn't go down in just one head shot or could be completely avoided all together. I haven't played the game yet, but I think the case is similar enough.
Yeah, I never noticed that…MGS did that all the time.
It is, and personally I found the fights entertaining.
I actually found that very annoying in MGS4. The only boss fight I actually liked was Crying Wolf, because that was the only one where stealth and patience was rewarded.
Sometimes I think the internet is a both a blessing and curse!
Maybe it's just me, but it seems more and more people are complaining these days.
agreed. There is no perfect win for everyone and anyone who doesn't like is hell bent on making there voice be heard. While the ones who don't really mind are too busy playing the game. Now if you'll excuse me I'm going to keep playing Deus Ex.
Yeah, the internet is blessing and curse!
the games control layout is killing the game for me grrr why wont the let you costomise the controls
hah, I'm adjusting but I know what you mean. I went to the controls screen to change things and all it does is tell you what they are: fixed.
It's actually not a bluray disc, just a normal DVD.
I wish I had gotten the Augmented Edition for the awesome soundtrack. Gah!
I pre-ordered the Augmented Edition just for the soundtrack alone, but I just found out some crappy news. Apparently the soundtrack only comes digitally and not on disc. It's included on the bonus DVD that comes with the edition. Problem is, the bonus DVD is actually a Blu-ray and the PS3 won't rip the soundtrack from the Blu. It says you have to rip the soundtrack on your computer, so if you don't have a Blu-ray drive, you're basically screwed out of getting the soundtrack. I, for one, don't have a Blu-ray drive on my PC. Once my copy arrives, I'll try it out, but if I can't have the soundtrack, then I'll be pretty upset. I would've just bought the regular version instead (especially since it comes with that nice slipcover).
Wow that's lame. I wonder if they sell the soundtrack online by itself.
Can you rip the music from the bonus disc to the PS3, and then transfer to the PC?

Well, the soundtrack is out there, shared via torrents. If you bought the augmented version I'd say you are entitled to download the soundtrack the easy way. 🙂
Beam FTW
Tridon you said it comes digitally but not on the disc, but it comes on the blu ray. That doesn't make sense to me. If it's digital then you can put it on flash, if not then things are the way they are and that blows.

@Claire – Apparently you can't rip the music to your PS3 at all, only your PC… and you have to have a Blu-ray drive.
@Beamboom – Touche, my friend. Touche. 😉
@World – Sorry for the confusion. Basically, it's on the Blu-ray disc, but you can't actually play it off of the disc. You have to rip it off the disc so then you own a digital copy of the album. Does that make sense? Thing is, though, you can't rip it on to your PS3, only a PC.
yeah that makes sense but its TOTALLY weird that they would do such a thing, not many people have blu ray drives on their PCs yet. Except pirates.
Argh sorry wrong reply, but the bonus dvd is actually just a normal DVD. just put it in and explore the contents to find the music files.
How often do we even see un-scripted boss fights? Isn't that what makes them bosses? There's an actual challenge that needs to be figured out and beaten.
These complaints you are referring to, clearly not from real gamers.
I think there should be more freedom, not speaking about deus ex but games in general I think they need to open things up.
The fact that I can launch missiles into a boss's face or empty a clip into him and have it do absolutely nothing because it isn't at the right time is just bothersome. It should at least eat a little health off his bar.
And how tired are people of hitting the "weak spot" to open up a soft underbelly? It's so old fashioned.
I've thus far beaten Barret and the tall black girl, and even though you couldn't hide from them for ever, you still had to tackle them in a tactical manner,. Especially if you don't have the dermal armour augs.
For the record you could quickly evade Barret using quick rolls, and in doing so he was left thinking you were on the otherside of the room.
Also both fights were incredibly different, in Barrets case I was entirely on the defensive – in the second boss battle I had to track her down while she was cloaked.
Have you beaten the 3rd boss yet? I'm stuck on that one.
Nevermind, got it. Good ol' revolver with explosive rounds hehe
I'm playing the game right now, and I just gotta say the game is so *stylish*. It's got class.
But oh boy how Jensen remind me of Neo, this game has The Matrix all over it. Not that I mind, quite the contrary.

yeah its definitely matrix territory, but let's not forget The Matrix wouldn't exist without Ghost in the Shell 🙂
Just to be annoying =p
The Deus Ex games fall squarely within a "cyber punk" theme. Matrix, Ghost in the Shell, Syndicate and others can all be rooted to some early 80's novelist. Forget who. And one of the more widely known, and of course vivid visual realizations, of cyber punk, the film, The Blade Runner, can be looked at as one of the real pioneers that inspires any of the theme.
It's all very similar from the outside
It only looks like I gave you a down World, but I didn't =p
I rarely do the thumb thing anyway. Only when I'm mad.
I really like this game, but that first boss fight with the big guy was really poorly put together.
I didn't like it, either. To be perfectly candid, it's actually THE reason I couldn't go above a 9.0.
Thankfully, the boss fights get better after that, even if they're all scripted.
Enjoying Deus Ex alot…but i wish I could change the controller setup. R3 for iron sights….uhhh
So r u actually say'n u don't like KZ? Is that it? Trying to start someth'n huh? HUH?
=p
I'll stop
Sorry, it's real slow at work. It's just me and my phone 😉
I can survive the bosses but… really? The security director of the biggest muckity muck corporation of all time gets shot on sight for being in the police station? Really? Ever heard of escorting a brother out of the building?
I don't know if this is too late or not, but talk to the guy at the front desk. You can convince him to let you in to the main station without getting shot up. Hope you see it and it helps 🙂
the police station was a blood bath for me…
I should say, don't mind my minor complaints. This game is The Sh*t.
its not the bosses that are the problem, its the restrictiveness of them.
you have no say in what happens, which is a MASSIVE turn from the rest of the game.
its like your playing a totally different game!
also there really unfair.
first time i chose to play as stealth, the stealth args are pretty much useless.
so i found the boss battles really hard because i did not have the health/ armour upgrades you could get if you were going for a more run and gun approach.
thats my biggest gripe with the game it asks you to choose how you want to play then makes you sorry for doing so.
i chose to spend my points on stealth instead of health so why should i have to suffer for that?
it would be ok if the bosses went down as easily as you do, but they dont.
they take 1 billion bullets to kill, but you only take like 5!
the first boss for example took 2 explosive barrels 1 fire extinguisher, several grenades, 3 AEDs and several rockets to kill.
all in the time it only took 5 or so bullets to kill me.
