Gran Turismo 5 took a while. It shouldn't surprise anyone that Polyphony Digital will require a smiliar amount of design time for the next installment.
According to European site Dinamica Games , Sony Worldwide Studios head man Shuhei Yoshida confirmed that Gran Turismo 6 is indeed in development, but it'll likely take "several years."
The follow-up assumption is that GT6 won't be ready until the PS4 is available. November will mark the PS3's fifth anniversary and everyone has been wondering when Sony will unveil the next piece of PlayStation hardware. However, the company has repeatedly said they have no plans to release the PS4 any time soon, so maybe GT6 will end up being one of the last great games for the PS3. On the other hand, wouldn't it make for an amazing PS4 launch title…?
Anyway, just remember that GT creator Kazunori Yamauchi is a perfectionist and if he's not fully satisfied with his creation, we won't see it. It's likely we won't see GT6 until late 2013 (just a guess), but what sort of hardware will we see at that time? The waning years of the PS3 or the infancy period of the PS4?
Gran Turismo 6 should be amazing. Let's hope the load times are not as long as they are in the 5th one.
But your article does bring a good question. If I had to guess, though, I would say it will still be on the PS3. While it may take years to develop and fully finish, I don't think it will take as long as it will to release the PS4 to the public. Just my thoughts on the matter.
Didn't Yamauchi already state something about GT6 coming to PS3?
I thought so anyway. That and it wouldn't take as long because the framework of GT5 is already in place.
I'll buy it either way =)
Not necessarily. He just commented that GT6 has started development (such as more cars and tracks), but whether it's for the ps3 or ps4, he's still uncertain.
Yes, He has. He said that GT6 will not take as long as GT5 to develop because it will be based off of GT5. GT5 was all new, new engine or something?
It doesn't matter when it comes, I'm preordering it as soon as I can out down the money for it.
I will like to see GT6 as a launch tittle for the PS4. I dont think they can do much more with the PS3 hardware.
Admittedly not knowing anything about development, I would hazard a guess that GT6 couldn't be a launch title for the PS4 because Poly would need a long time with the PS4 to polish their game. Sony couldn't wait as long as Poly would need to release the PS4.
Wheras with the PS3 their assets are already in place to make a great game, and the end product could be finished a lot sooner.
Well if it is already in development and the PS3 is going to be 5 soon and it has a 10 year life cycle, probably going to be coming out around 2014 or Fall 2013.
I say during the latter PS3 days.
I'm of the same thought that MyWorstNightmar posted above.
Not having one iota tech savvy in me, I'm wondering how they would even know how to code it now yet for the PS4, that when the PS4's architecture is still really a unknown, & just a multiple of rumors right now?
They can get resources all ready, like car and track models, sounds, etc. Its also possible to get an engine up and running on the ps3 then move it over to the ps4 later if they decide to do that. Team ICO did that with ICO, which was meant to be a psx game.
I hope GT6 is on the ps3. There were two GT games on each sony platform thus far, and i like consistency.
Not sure you can compare Ico to GT6 though. Saying it was possible for one game to make the leap doesn't mean another game with entirely different standards could.
Are you saying that Team ICO doesnt work to as high of standards as PD? Because you would be wrong. Very wrong.
Hopefully its good, im going to get flamed for sure but forza 4 looks damn good…
I never had a problem with Forza's looks.
It has always been the driving.
I don't see the need for flaming. Forza is a fine game. It's not like you're saying which is better without context.
I'd play the crap out of Forza if my wheel worked on the 360.
My guess is it'll be a late generation PS3 title. PD have stated before that it shouldn't take as long this time, all they really need to do is up the Premium car count and fix the game aspects. But then, they're reportedly doing that for the continuing updates for GT5… It kinda makes one wonder about what will make the next game different from what GT5 will ultimately become.
I mean, the digital future means that the team need only release one GT game at the start of any given generation and then constantly update it with more of everything, which would allow to expand to work on other projects. Not saying that's a good idea, but it could theoretically happen.
It can happen, but for GT5's case, and if GT5 were to be dependent on updates till GT6, we'd just get seasonal events, more tracks, and more cars. You could say that's all we need, but how long can one last playing a game under the same concept design and not get bored? Also, although it's the minor, those without online access will suffer.
People (and Kaz) also wants a lot things to be added for GT of this generation. It's too big to be added as patches and DlC. For one example, the A-Spec. I'm not bashing, but the A-Spec in this game looks and feel like they were last moment add-ons. The special events might've been ok, but overall, just look at GT5's feature and compare it with the offline content? GT5 has night racing and dynamic weather, rally tracks, and mechanical damage. Tell me how many A-spec events utilizes those features? Almost none.
How far GT5 will be patched and supported is unknown. But the end product (after all the DLC and patches) will determine GT6's fate, and when it'll release.
I'm speaking in general btw.
Sony's contract with PD for GT6 needs to include one clause.
"PD undertakes that GT6 will be available within the 3 month launch window of the PlayStation 4, for every week beyond that time period, Sony will be entitles to recover a penalty amount not less than 0.5% of the development budget."
I very much doubt that will happen, but PD needs to have a fire lit under their feet, and GT6 needs to be a launch title for PS4.
This is the first thing you said that I disagree with.
why rush it?
so we can end up with another 700 models of up scaled ps2 cars?
no thanks!
Yeah, the last time PD tried to rush a GT franchise for the ps3, they came up with GT Vision, which then turned to GTHD. It consisted mostly of scaled car models, and none of the cars certainly had no interior (cockpit) views. On top of that, physics was horrible!
Most likely. 🙁
I hope they get it right this time.
Will be surprised if this isn't for PS4.
……..
Similiar lol
Neither. It'll be out near the end of the Ps5 Generation.
I am thinking that it will be a PS5 launch title…
I would actually be quite unhappy if they intended told hold off for the PS4. All this talk of GT5 being the operating system, GT6 would not take long, that would be rendered meaningless if we were to see GT6 be pushed to a different console. I would rather a optimization and all the wonderful things that didnt make it into GT5 be realized on THIS console. There's still many years left to make use of the ps3 in general and for Gran Turismo.
They should make it a PS4 launch title, as much as one iteration of any game per generation pains my brain, they will have to have a killer must-buy lineup after the debacle that was the PS3 launch.
I actually hope it's released for PS4. I think they could spend time modeling cars and get rid of those awful looking 'standard' cars without actually needing the PS4 and then once they have the hardware transfer the car models and start working on the other stuff
If the nearly geometric increase in the development cycle for the GT series is any indication, I'd have to guess *PS5* as well.
One would hope they could optimize the PS3 engine and release GT6 before PS3 becomes an afterthought, but Polyphony's perfectionism doesn't exactly facilitate going gold. There's always something that could be better with a few months more work.
In all seriousness, I don't think GT would miss the PS4 generation, but I wouldn't be shocked either.
"Anyway, just remember that GT creator Kazunori Yamauchi is a perfectionist and if he's not fully satisfied with his creation, we won't see it."
Not that I don't agree, but it's not true when Sony does something about it, and pressures him to do so, as they make the final decisions. That's what happened with GT5. GT5 is something that Kaz is not completely satisfied with, nor was it as complete as he wanted to be. You can argue this, but playing the game as much as I have, listening to his vision, cuts made from the game, and wanting 2 more years if he could, it's clear to me that things didn't go as smoothly as expected. It was either management issues, or the lack of staff that caused this. I'm just trying to say that it's possible that we see the game, when it's not up to Kaz's expectation.
I can see GT6 being for the ps3 for several reasons:
1. Engine they've worked so hard for is in place, so it's just a matter of adding content.
2. According to Kaz, a lot of things were cut from GT5 due to time, and that it'll be pushed to GT6.
3. Back in September 2010, Kaz said that GT6 has already started development. This probably referred to the fact that content and concept was already in the making and that decisions on what's to be available and cut for GT5 is already decided. Only problem now is the uncertainty on whether this content will be for Ps3, or ps4.
4. If GT6, were to be for the ps4, it would almost have no chance of releasing it as a launch title, so if it were to be used for the benefit of early ps4 sales, it's not the game to be dependent on. Rather, Kaz would probably spend some time on it, and release it around 2 years into the ps4 release. That is a long gap, even though we've waited 5 plus years for GT5, we shouldn't wait that long again.
5. If GT6 IS under development, does that mean that Kaz has the dev kits for the ps4 already? What's the context of "under development" mean? Making content now so they can upscale it for the ps4 later? PD would need the kit at least 2 years in advance, unless everyone would want them to upscale everything rather than utilize the ps4's ability. Remember GT Vision/GT HD? That would be the solution if Sony needs a GT early. Kaz wouldn't want to call it a full fledged GT6.
6. And if history repeats itself, and GT6 were to be for ps3, it's not the first time we see a second GT for the same console generation.
It all depends on management.
I would rather not think about gt6 right now, but thinking on what ways can they improve gt5. I think they should do monthly updates with new features, cars, gamemodes and gameplay changes.
Well I hope they do this for the next 2 years before another console rises on the market.

Well GT5 was a good foundation so GT6 should have…
1)All Premium 'useful' cars (400 is enough)
2)Decreased Loading Times
3)Competitive passive aggressive A.I. for "all" races
4)Deeper GT Mode
5)More exciting Tracks
GT5 stays in rotation, but these issues sometimes bother me. But that's because I expected perfection really, but either way…GT6 is a day one purchase as well. Forza 4 is looking pretty good right now as well…might need to seriously consider buying a 360.
Whatever console its for it'll disappoint like GT5
Ever pessimistic I see.
I was quite happy with gt 5 although they did leave out some tracks that appeared in 4 !
id say a ps4, but not as a launch title maybe a year later.
kazs a perfectionist by the time he gets the engine up to ps4 standards or maybe a new engine, and gets everything ready would take at least 3 years.
that puts it nicely in the time frame of a launch for the ps4s birthday.
they have pleanty other series for launch titles, and to fill the year up until the launch.
maybe even do a GTHD concept like they did for the ps3 as a launch title for ps4, then do GT6 prolouge, then GT6.
i wish kaz would go away from the track and create a street sim.
im starting to get bored with the sterile track scenery, it would be so cool if we could have the body of GT in a city environment of test drive unlimited 2.
and of course add in motorcycles!
The PS4 will debut as soon as MS releases the next Xbox ! If that means 2012/2013, then the PS4 will soon follow !
Well, there have been 2 per PlayStation so far. I think that trend might just be kept as tradition – like three numbered FFs for each generation, right?
