Sega Reveals “Definitive Version” Of Virtua Fighter 5

Hey, remember Virtua Fighter ? It was a damn good fighting franchise…heck, still is.

Virtua Fighter 5 came out for the PlayStation 3 in early 2007 and now, fighting aficionados can play the definitive version of the game next summer. Sega has announced Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown , which is described as a "standalone downloadable title." It boasts new modes, arenas, and customizable character items, along with two extra fighters for the roster. We'll get sum wrestler Taka-Arashi (from VF3) and the debut of Jean Kujo.

Sega will also deliver online multiplayer action for both the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of Final Showdown , and "little to no latency" for online matches. But if you'd rather play solo, the game will offer a new single-player mode that pits you against "an army of opponents." Yeah, the digital world continues to advance but this is great news, right? I'm not a big fighting fan so I'm assuming it's great news.

OMFG!!!! This news has just made my day.

After playing Final Showdown when i last visited Japan i was always hoping they would bring it to consoles. As far as i'm concerned there is no other fighting game that is as deep, tactical or indepth than Final Showdown. Get hype people, this is the real deal!!!

Anyone planning on getting this & i will be sure to add you.

What a year for fighting game fans; First TTT2, SCV, SF X Tekken, the amazing looking Skullgirls, KOFXIII console release & now daddy himself coming home.

Thankyou SEGA, i can die easy now 🙂

I'm stoked too, Kevin5. Man, this has been a long time coming. I'm still angry at SEGA for sitting for so long before bringing their ardent PS3-base the VF5 franchise online. Man, I think thousands of Japanese gamers have just lost the ONLY reason to have a 360. I sincerely hope MS had nothing to do with locking the online down on this game to the 360 in hopes to preserve that small, but better than nothing, pocket of gamer in Japan. I suspect by now, MS knows it's a lost cause over there.

@Temjin,

Man, i thought about your reaction to this news. I don't know about you but i was seriously starting to just give up & taste the bitter pill that we consolers weren't getting it. I still really cannot believe it's happening now, it's surreal.

BTW, who do you main Temjin? I personally go with Aoi & Goh but i am willing to give Jean a look over too. Regardless, you, myself & many more will finally get to play this. I am also smitten that SEGA has given VF new life, so hopefully it becomes a big scene at fighting tournaments & brings fresh fans to the fanbase.

Still cannot believe this news, best gaming news of the year for me.

I usually use either; Brad Burns, Goh Hinagami, Lei-Fei, Lau Chan, and Kage Maru, sometimes Akira Yuki.

Those are mostly my favorite characters.

Well, being much more Tekken oriented, as I never had localized arcade offerings in my area, my desire for being skilled at VF has been more romanticized than anything. That is, while I've played a lot of the single player stuff and understand the in-depth mechanics well, there's a lot of critical timing and play strats I have yet to master while online. I did play about 200+ matches, or so, of VF5: O, but I thought the match-up system was pretty antiquated and lacking details, not too mention lacking activity. Those that I did fight, though, were quite skilled and usually bested me. I've played against some horrendously brutal Jeffry's. My two favorites are Jacky (easier to learn and my most proficient character) and Akira (the epitome of fighting game mastery)
I've flirted with learning some decent stuff with Sarah, Lau, Wolf and Kage before. There's a whole lot to learn with every VF character, so getting good with more than a couple almost feels like too much.

Back in the day, I mained Jacky Bryant (yes, I am noob trash) and also spent some quality time with Goh and Aoi (way outta my skill level).

I have no interest in racking up the losses online, but if there are DEEP single-player modes in this version I am interested to hear about them!

I left Virtua Fighter after part 3, which seemed stale. So many good memories of the Saturn and VF2 though. I don't even know how this game plays any more, is there any martial arts styles in it?

A character creator would have made it a must buy. Come oooooon Soul Calibur V…

You should atleast try Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution on the PS2 or give VF5 a whirl. Final Showdown is actually abit quicker paced this time around & performing juggles is abit more easier as well to make it more user friendly for newcomers.

There is martial arts abound in VF5, everything from Bajiquan, Jujitsu, Vale Tudo, Muay Thai, Shaolin Ken, Savate, Tai Kwon Do, Aiki Jujitsu & even drunken Kung Fu. & it's all animated so realistically.

Also, if you like dolling up your character than what i've seen from the arcade version of Final Showdown alone is more than enough. This sh!ts all over Tekken 6 customisation but it doesn't feature a create-a-fighter option like SC.

Great news for VF fans, but since its the definitive version of VF5, I think it deserves a retail version. This is definitely a full-fledged title, so I can't see why it's just a downloadable. Still, I'm glad its available for consoles at all, since it seemed so hopeless before, and it shouldn't stop VF fans from enjoying it.

Its probably because both VF5 on ps3 and 360 flopped especially the 360 version.

You have no idea just how big this news is to fans of Virtua Fighter. I mean this is VF5's SECOND big update.

VF5 then it had small updates then a big update in the form of VF5 R which added the two new characters and stages.

Then VF5R got its small updates then another big update in the form of VF5 Final Showdown.

VF5 final showdown has new stages and character rebalances and tweaks and customizations. I think we will get the latest version of VF5 Final showdown come 2012.

But its a testament to how ahead VF5 was. It still is the best looking console fighting game to date! VF5 is 5 years old!

SEGA seemed to be stupid by not releasing this to the fans, They were making petitions and literally begging the makers to put this on console.

Now they have finally listened, it is great news indeed!

Surely after 4 years they could have made a new title…. oh well, its not a series I care for anyway.

This is a definite buy from me! VF5 is still high on my list of favorite PS3 games. I hope that the difference between the 2007 and 2012 version is worth it. 5 years is a long time.

Finally!
I am waiting for online support since 2008!
Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown is over a year old it self by now (arcade).
Never played much VF before VF4.
It was not one of the Fighting games of my friends.
But what I played the system seems to be one of the best by far. But I doubt I will ever get as may hours into it as I already have with SF2 and DoA2 :/
